Another important thing is to drill and fasten some tapcons that protrude beyond the broken surface and below the finished surface so that the concrete has something to grab in the event of shrinkage and frost.
Thx. Inspiring video. I had some agregate done last yr and it cracked and popped up near the stairs because the contractor didnt put expansion joint. Now he doesnt return my calls. Very dissapointed but this video helps me get over it. Ill repair it myself.
It's definitely a temp fix, keeps guys like me in business,My business is about 1/2 tear out and replace, 1/2 decorative. There is definitely better overlay products, but these guys are your sponsor so good job trying it out. Were in the business of making money and building relationships. This spring I will be interested if it survived. I'm in Iowa, so close to u and about same weather
You’re 100% right about a mixing drill. I go the 1/2” cheapo corded spade drill (63112) from Harbor Freight for mixing mortar and concrete. 99.9% of the time it’s sitting on a shelf but well worth the $40 bucks for when I need it.
Once the concrete is drying on the tools it means you are too damn slow and your not dunking your tool in water between pours. Always keep a bucket of clean water near you and clean your tools regularly, Troweling is easy with clean tools.
For all the people who think that this guy is cool because he threw his tools on the ground at the end. 6:01 He didn’t trow the tools. He cut the video. Play at at .25 speed and you will see.
I agree. The repaired cracks are so much more visible. And the color choice is, well, a bit too loud. Now the house and driveway are matching. For those cursing their homeowner association (HOA) this is why you need to have appreciation. Our neighbors had to remove their ugly plastic tile roof because they didn't get permission (not that it would have been approved). Another neighbor decided to paint their house pink. Yes, pink. That was halted and repained a nice dark blue. They also ensure no homes become rental untis. Yards are kept up, sidewalks pressure washed every spring, the entrances, common areas and huge park are kept up weekly, etc, etc... Bless you HOA!!! Bless you.
Any advice for drainage on a sunken brick paver patio? The land pitches towards the house. Perhaps a sump pump? But what about freezing in the winter? It gets pretty cold here in Michigan.
On this particular project the patio would be right off of the walk out basement. There's the drain pipe that leads to the sump pump in the basement, possibly tap into that?
Sorry, I can't get behind this... There is no way to get a permanent bond between the top coat and the original slab. The bond your searching for is when you re-hydrate the gel sacks of the slab and the top coat. There is no way to get enough gel sacks to bond with the new. That is why most concrete companies suggests a min of 1/2. So that when you have an area that is not bonded the strength due to thickness (of the top coat) will keep the concrete from cracking. The sad part is that homeowners will think this is a legitimate repair only to have to replace everything in the future. I could have injected and lifted this slab in an hour...
Great video as always, ill have to try that product out some time soon. Most likely next year Broke my hand due to working around a moreoff, more off than on. 2 fingers fractured and broken at base of 3 knuckles sprained wrist pulled tendons(Free Health Care for the Win). Curious do you have any Canadians in your master mind group? Before the break and workers comp i was doing lawncare, retaining walls, deck repair, gutter cleaning/repair fascia, doors/windows install replacement And or clean junk removal etc. on the side. Welding during the day. Since the injury i really have no desire to work for anyone but myself ever again. Reason i ask is because my province has a bunch of landscaping companies that do halfass work do more damage than actual lawncare. Retaining wall buckle and fail more than not, ive installed 12 retaining walls none over 7 ft high yet, but none have failed, first one i installed was 10 years ago still straight as an arrow. I've learned a few tricks from your videos, that i wish i knew before. I have a few life lines to call on certain aspects of landscaping but they are limited as I am more skilled in actual building than they are or hard scaping. I've much enjoy your videos, don't worry about the tool nazi's lol chucking them 3 ft should hurt them lol. Keep doing your thing stanley.
Thanks for the video! Where can I find Part 2? I've got a driveway that is cratered: the concrete on top has popped off in hundreds of little craters that end in the gravel that was used to thicken the concrete. Maybe they used too much gravel? Anyway, I watched this video mostly to learn about the sealer you used and to figure out whether it would work in my situation. My driveway has areas that are cratered and areas that aren't.
I know Im late but thought Id chime in for the heck of it. A lot of times that is caused by an improper finishing process that leaves the top surface too thick and the aggregate gravel pushed too far down. When the concrete freeze/ thaws or just over time from being exposed to the elements that top finished layer will pop off and expose the aggregate. I think a cement patch like he shows in the video would work great. You could then stain/ coat/ seal over top of it with no issues.
As a mason if I went to repair that I would recommend all sunken parts of driveway be jackhammer completely out as putting cement on top of a sinking structure will certainly not cause it to stop sinking...this video should be called how to waste a full day, several peoples time and some money.
Absolutely correct - but these days people think they can save money by doing patches - they don't think about the long run - they think they going to sell their house in the next 5-7 years - so they don't care !!! this is why renters today around the world are living in dump houses that not safe for living !!! the owners will not do proper fixing to big issues !!!
I don't recall which radio host said it, but this: one HOA should be selected at random each year and shot. Personally, if somebody wants to direct what I can do to my property [as long as no hazard is being created], then they can pay my property taxes, and all good.
5 min set time is stupid there is no way most people are going to be able to lay a bag of that down and make it look half way decent in 5 min. But I guess what do they care if half of it drys in the bucket, you just have to buy more of it from them.
It looks like there is some skill and attention to detail needed to know how to do all that but another level of experience to be able to diagnose client needs and come up with a plan of action. Do you need any qualifications or certificates etc to work with concrete?
What is with tennis shoes? For real? Where are the safety glasses, gloves, work boots - again, tennis shoes? Mixing man, no safety glasses, no respirator? Handling the concrete without gloves? Hello raspberries and concrete burns. Presentation was great, safety was tossed out the door just as the tools are tossed during presentation - LOL
Hi Stan, off topic. I'm a new subscribers and loving the content. I would love to have your information on being able to find cheap equipment for running a business. Right now I started a summer business doing Firepits and it blew up to Paver patios/walkways, landings, retaining walls, and some other stuff. Honestly I did not think it would turn out well with demand. I'm still making big rookie mistakes with bidding and employees and job decisions that turn costly. I was hoping for some tips if possible. Would you know where to find cheap larger scale compactor plate machines like 450lb or 1000? I would especially eternally grateful to find a Mini Loader to help excavate these sites rather than renting one and getting gorged. Or Dump trucks too? I see cheap broken down ones for 2000 but everything else is for the rich it seems :( This is actually putting me through college right now surprisingly and I'm open to any pro advice out there. Thanks for your ear! Awesome Vid by the way!
Stanley "Dirt Monkey" Genadek Thank you very much for the information. Really about to dive into your amazing information. You are a superb teacher in your videos. Respect from Michigan!
hahaha definitely not for pro if You’re IT or PHD this video is for you . cheap job , next year everything popping out :) but i love this video a lot of fun :)
I found this video very helpful. Nobody likes the color, but it's the homeowner's choice. Not everyone has the same taste.
That's true Ruth, glad that it was helpful!
I was just about to say I learned an extra trick today just throw the tools on the ground when done
Another important thing is to drill and fasten some tapcons that protrude beyond the broken surface and below the finished surface so that the concrete has something to grab in the event of shrinkage and frost.
Good point!
My driveway is small just enough to park 2 cars. Can’t wait to do this
Thx. Inspiring video. I had some agregate done last yr and it cracked and popped up near the stairs because the contractor didnt put expansion joint. Now he doesnt return my calls. Very dissapointed but this video helps me get over it. Ill repair it myself.
I like the old driveway...
It's definitely a temp fix, keeps guys like me in business,My business is about 1/2 tear out and replace, 1/2 decorative. Thanks for sharing. Helps a lot. The unsuspected injected humor was pretty cool too.
Excellent video, short , right to point, names tools and concrete product
You’ve got to make more review vids on ventracks and bobcats and stuff and job sites going bad
I can do all that as well.
Love the Milwaukee Mud Mixer and Leaf blower
Nice video. This is just what I need for some short term repairs in my 90yo one-car garage.
Awesome video! You should try Cement All for some of the leveling and patching. Its fast setting, stronger, and more reliable bond strength.
Cemental has additives that allow flo control and also slow set up so you have more time, very helpful if you are old and slow like some of us!
Sika 623 is a superior product. Can also be mixed with 10mm stone.
Good to know.
You’re 100% right about a mixing drill. I go the 1/2” cheapo corded spade drill (63112) from Harbor Freight for mixing mortar and concrete. 99.9% of the time it’s sitting on a shelf but well worth the $40 bucks for when I need it.
As long as it works that whats matters.
I have same one after a recommendation from another contractor. 2 years later, it’s still doing just fine.

Dry is better than over-filled. At least you know there was some previous relief!
Sooo...I get about that 5 minutes hardening, but if it lasts more that 4 hours, should you contact your physician? (No, she didn't say that).
Great video U did a really good job with the driveway
Thanks!
Great info. I'm using that stuff tomorrow on a project.
Let me know how it goes.
Always use a face shield when using a chop saw, I saw a guy rip open his face from the shroud handle when the saw bound up.
Once the concrete is drying on the tools it means you are too damn slow and your not dunking your tool in water between pours. Always keep a bucket of clean water near you and clean your tools regularly, Troweling is easy with clean tools.
That guy doing the work is a smart man he can do it all.I am sure he has done it for years.
Franky is amazing
For all the people who think that this guy is cool because he threw his tools on the ground at the end. 6:01 He didn’t trow the tools. He cut the video. Play at at .25 speed and you will see.
How has the resurfacing held up after 3 winters?
How has it handled freezing winters?
Awesome topic, thanks for sharing this. However the end result is just dreadful in my honest opinion
Its the process that matters. I wanted this look for my place but realize its not for everybody.
I agree. The repaired cracks are so much more visible. And the color choice is, well, a bit too loud. Now the house and driveway are matching. i may have to do this for our driveway
Its really cool!
I actually think the old drive was much better.
I mix my chocolate milk the same way as you mix concrete. Always put the milk in first, or it will stick to the bottom of the cup.
LOL- Yep! Great analogy!
@Steel and Tree Design rent free
Didn't know Richard Rawlings got into concrete business
thanks for the info and the humor!
Mighty Moe Excavating gives thumbs up 👍
Cool!
I have concrete driveways in Michigan with frost
Same here- we are in Minnesota.
Incredible! Super valuable info!!
Thanks Jon!
thanks
Why would you add a layer on top of concrete instead of using a method like mud jacking?
Love the video.
Thank you Pao!
Wow great video mate
What is the name of the final product, I mean the red paint???
Any advice for drainage on a sunken brick paver patio? The land pitches towards the house. Perhaps a sump pump? But what about freezing in the winter? It gets pretty cold here in Michigan.
That video is coming soon.
On this particular project the patio would be right off of the walk out basement. There's the drain pipe that leads to the sump pump in the basement, possibly tap into that?
I'll take photos and post them if I can.
Great job on the driveway
Thanks Brandon😃

I am testing it out-if it fails their will be an update video.
Ad/video all in one.
It meant to be a How to do it video but I also include what I use and why.
Where is the sealing video as part of this series?
Nice work! Can't wait for part 2.
Thanks!

I think the materials may have cost as little as $660, but the equipment & labor was the bulk of it
As a mason if I went to repair that I would recommend all sunken parts of driveway be jackhammer completely out as putting cement on top of a sinking structure will certainly not cause it to stop sinking...this video should be called how to waste a full day, several peoples time and some money.

I was thinkn maybe I was crazy, but yes,I agree with everything ur sayn'.
I am going to have to leave for work so I will finish watching this tomorrow, but the finished driveway looks slippery.
Its just the wet look that makes it appear that way.
I liked the exposed look better
thats what she said
Stanley what's best cheap leaf blower you know that mulches and bags
Great video.
Thanks!
looks hilbilly...red driveway/not HOA approved is my guess
I don't recall which radio host said it, but this: one HOA should be selected at random each year and shot.
Personally, if somebody wants to direct what I can do to my property [as long as no hazard is being created], then they can pay my property taxes, and all good.
what happened to part 2?
well i guess i need a milwaukee cordless mud mixer now...lol
LOL
Whats the chance this can be done over asphalt?
This helped alot. Thanks.
Great video! Can you do a review on the mixer?
I sure can.👍
Great videos! Thanks for the info!
Haha i like the way ur throwing ur tools!:) btw thats hell of a car wish i could drive one just for a day!!!
6:01 He didn’t trow the tools. He cut the video. Play at at .25 speed and you will see.
That's not an aluminum trowel, it's a magnesium float.
Do you have a driveway drain or French drain because when it rains the water will go back to the garage? I might've missed it in the video
No need - I had enough of a slope.
5 min set time is stupid there is no way most people are going to be able to lay a bag of that down and make it look half way decent in 5 min. But I guess what do they care if half of it drys in the bucket, you just have to buy more of it from them.
yip, i was watching franky use a mag and thinking 'what the hell is he using that for?!!'
It's not an aluminum trowel it's a magnesium hand float.
Paul Robles Thank you. Big difference in the hand float and hand trowel
So you are saying materials are $660..how much did you charge the customer?..I would guess $15,000..correct?
What about a plastic trail
What?
Pretty good vid! But isn't that your house?
Yes it is.
Where is part two?
This is very nice! Great work! Have you heard of the Concrete Crack Lock™?
Awesome
can i used that brand of cement for installing and reinforcing 7' fence posts?
concrete you mean
Does the $660 include the drill and the leaf blower
you done spray on paving/ sprayon stencil, i'm lookin at troweling it on then running a stipple float over it
What did you use to fill the gap between the old & new concrete (the blue stuff)?
That was just gap filler. That piece was actually old carpet padding.
Gotchya, so something temporary, rip it out when the concrete dries and put in the expansion material?
"Aluminum trowel." Is it full semi auto? That was a float dude. Also, do we just forget about straight joints?
What's the best way to resurface a driveway with cracks?
Bro never start your video with a blower running wide open wth?
Awsome!
That small concrete spall on the stoop, should have been saw cut and pinned. Then patched.
no need to pin or tie in if you use a bond admixture for portland based products.
Regular grout mixed with concrete glue will also work well for this.
I never heard of that.
Working smarter not harder.
That's a pressure washer ? Nah! Barbie Doll accessory right ?
Nice!
Thanks!
Phunny azz innuendos!
It looks like there is some skill and attention to detail needed to know how to do all that but another level of experience to be able to diagnose client needs and come up with a plan of action. Do you need any qualifications or certificates etc to work with concrete?
Not this kind of stuff.
If I'm ever in America I'd love to go and work for you.
Do you know where he got the extension for his mixer tool?
Its just a paddle wheel.
Great video! I recommend removing the dumb jokes in future videos.

Auctions, or K-bid but be careful of those places.
Stanley "Dirt Monkey" Genadek Thank you very much for the information. Really about to dive into your amazing information. You are a superb teacher in your videos. Respect from Michigan!
Clean the garage!
Odell will get you straight
David Odell for life
Fantastic work Stanley, and great job getting it to $660! Have you been doing this for a while?
hahaha definitely not for pro if You’re IT or PHD this video is for you . cheap job , next year everything popping out :) but i love this video a lot of fun :)
At 3:44 is the best part
Don't ever salt it because you know why.
$230 for material cost $430 for the water bill
Coll vid
Thanks!
It ok I like DIY stuff
Are you repairing those steps too
Not in this series. Maybe a future project
