I have a cat. He's a diabetic shedding monster that tears things up, pukes only on the carpets, pees inappropriately if clothes get left on the floor and costs a bloody fortune to keep alive. I love him and take care of him with few complaints. Little bastard.
I have a longhair (Turkish Angorra) that had hairballs / vomiting pretty much weekly. By brushing daily to remove excess hair and using a cod liver based laxative to help pass hair I could cut that down to just one hairball every 2 or 3 weeks. Finally though I decided to give it a "lion cut" with some trimmers. Since then, several months ago, she hasn't had one hairball or vomiting episode.
You mention shedding and vomiting so yours may be experiencing the same thing: a GI blockage related to hair. It may also have other issues too, but trying a trim couldn't hurt and may alleviate some of whatever going on.
