What a fantastically flawless performance and a brilliantly written script.. When the guys did this sketch on the show at the BBC, they assumed that they would have to do it at least twice as the audience wouldn't, "get it." Ronnie Barker - in an interview some time later - said that it was done in one 'take' as the audience were often so switched on they were often ahead of the punch lines.
And the two Ronnies would produce stuff like that weekly for years and years. That's why individually and together they were comedy legends for decades.
I think the man behind this was David Renwick, who went on to write the sitcom 'One Foot In The Grave' and the Alan Davies vehicle 'Jonathan Creek' - both of which demonstrated some pretty ingenious conceits. They were very lucky with their pool of writers.
They were great, they did this sort of stuff all the time , back in the 70's when I was kid this was a must watch on a Saturday night , glad you like them.
The Two Ronnies was a sketch programme, so most pieces are fairly short - the musical number that came at the end of the show was usually longer. There is a goldmine for you to discover here, Vanessa. I'll miss seeing you for the next couple of weeks or so.
The writer, David Renwick: ‘Generally, writers were given free rein to come up with their own ideas.’ Arguably Renwick’s most famous sketch was his version of Mastermind although we’re lucky it was recorded in the first place. ‘Having sat down and written the sketch, I tore it up,’ he admits. ‘The following day, because I had no better ideas and had to deliver something, I literally fished the pieces out of the waste bin and taped them together.’
Ronnie Barker loved to play with words in his sketches (his mispronunciation sketch is comedy genius) and they are all brilliant. He also wrote the four candles sketch, and I'm old enough to have grown up watching the Two Ronnies show. Along with Morcambe and Wise they are my comedy heroes :-)
Our favourite Austrian English person and the Two Ronnies in one video is always a recipe for fun and enjoyment. Hope the next couple of weeks aren't too overwhelming. As Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) used to say "until next time, thank you " xx
Ronnie Barker was brilliant - he was never out and out rude but he was all about innuendo. If you want to see more of Ronnie Barker, please react to the tv series Porridge set inside a prison, Kate Beckinsale's father Richard appeared in it too as one if the lead characters.
The Writer wasn't happy with sketch he wrote and threw the sketch in the dustbin. But he had a deadline and wasn't able to write something else. So he got the Sketch out of the dustbin and did send it to the BBC.
You did well Vanessa considering these references are 30 years old. British Leyland was the main British Car Manufacturer with a poor reputation for Man Management and Strikes. " Burkes" / "Berks" is the Book for the list of Peers as well as meaning idiots. Len Murray was then THe Head Of Trade Unions while Geoffrey Howe was a prominent politician. Bedlam was an Institution for insane people hence the " Nutcase" joke. Dean Martin was a Drinker so when he said "PASS" the host said "near enough" because it sounded like "Pis Artist" i.e. a Heavy Drinker etc. The Host looked just like the real host of this long-running programme and the set and format was true to the original :)
I don't think Ronnie Corbett gets enough credit for his performances. We know Ronnie B is a genius also for writing this stuff, but in both this and Four Candles, Corbett's performance is understated brilliance.
It works so well because the script keeps track of everything. Also, Ronnie Barker is doing a fairly accurate impression of Mastermind host Magnus Magnusson; the Iceland-born journalist writer and presenter whose clipped manner of speaking and catchphrase 'I've started so I'll finish' when the buzzer went off passed into the consciousness of the British TV viewing public. But the sketch is really all down to Ronnie Corbett, who makes it seem completely real.
I'm from the generation that are known as Zoomers and I find this comedy gold as well! I hope you're doing well and the next two weeks go well for you! We will miss you and thank you for another great reaction video! :) Sending you all my best!
💗Love the channel. If you think that was good the next Two Ronnie's sketch you need to watch is Crossed Lines. Guaranteed to have you in stitches. Keep them coming.😂👍😂
And so very missed. But then again Morecambe & Wise were too so clever with their Andrew Preview sketch, Shirley Bassey only too happy to make a fool of herself back in 1971. Britain was awash with clever talented actors & brilliant comedies far too many to mention. Fawlty Towers, The Good Life, Steptoe & Son, Rise & Fall of Reginald Perrin etc. etc. Wendy Craig in Butterflies & Mother Makes 3 & 5.
This sketch is so hard to follow you really have to concentrate like you say it’s pure genius and hilarious it might be short but it’s just brilliant Sorry we won’t be seeing you for a while but work comes first see you when you get the time so bye for now Love 💕 from Denise in Yorkshire England 🏴😂😂👍👏👏👋
If you want to see what a genius Ronnie Barker (the big one) was you HAVE to watch an episode of the sitcom Porridge called 'A Night In'. It's set in a single prison cell for the whole half hour and the dialogue is purely between Fletch (Ronnie Barker) and his cellmate Godber (Richard Beckinsale). The two start talking after lights out so most of the lighting is set up like moonlight shining through a window. This episode breaks every traditional rule of the sitcom and it shouldn't really work but the acting is so good by Barker and Beckinsale it is a total triumph. You should be able to find it somewhere on the Web, watch it, I promise you won't be disappointed.
B: Listen, SImon, I had to ring you up to find out how you got on with that fabulous girl last night. C: Er, not too bad. There were one or two things I couldn't quite get hold of. B: Oh yeah. Yes, I know the kind of girl, yeah. Where did you take her? Somewhere exotic? C: Er, Sainsbury's.
