Yes, I know you can use the slasher thing against Web Spider and stun him that way. Now hopefully I stop seeing that pop up in my comments every day.
This review is great, but I bet somewhere deep in the comment section, someone is gonna mention the Ultimate Armor.
FUN FACT: The Japanese version had voice lines that were cut in the US. If you simply look it up, all the Mavericks had voice lines.
The voice acting actually made this better! SO MEMORABLE despite it being bad, its so bad, its good imo. I always am laughing while playing so it is very entertaining for me at least!
@@brendangoodell6233
No, it made it worse. It would be better if it was re-dubbed and if the Mavericks had more voice lines like the JP version.
That part about additional voice lines? Here's what I mean.

"Cyber-cock's explosive chase missiles"
Lol XD
LOL 😂
Oh, they’re explosive al right, I’m not talking from personal experience or anything.

I never knew that X had two upgrades. I played Black Zero/Zero most of the time, when I played X4.
I only play X when I moved on to X5 and foward.
These upgrades are cool as freak, I admit it. This is shocking to me
Yeah, this is my favorite Mega Man game. Admittedly, a big part of that is just playing as Zero, who is even more fun to play as than X imo.
If you are really good at X4, playing as Zero so much fun because of Zero's storyline, and the powerful Z Saber makes game progress more smoother
mostly because inafune only cared about zero
The Megaman X looks like to have two main characters....
+Matthew Zakrzewski Zero rocks!
WaddleDee105 Mine is X1
5:01 - 5:05 -
X: "Wait, Zero, I-I'm serious!!",
Zero's facial expression says it like " Seriously bro, with a voice like that, how can you expect anyone to take you seriously."
I might be weird but i find his voice cute...
That face Zero had after X speaks....Man, I laugh uncontrollably i don't know why.
The general's voice dub was CLASSIC "i have.. no choice"
Cyberspace is the best stage ever

I am pretty sure I heard the term "Spark Mandrill Syndrome" looong before the Completionist review.
projared
I guess he first heard it from him
Reviewers: (Intelligent and in-depth explanation of the game and it's execution)
Me: This game was pretty fun.
Hahaha, nothing wrong with that, dude! :D
Thats pretty much the reviewer's approach although they're trying to tell others of their experience so they have to qualify what exactly they enjoyed in it, why they enjoyed it, how others might enjpy it, and distinguish between the craftsmanship of the game and personal taste.
Twin Slasher actually does Web Spider's AI though. You just have to use it correctly, and it's not obvious what it is unless you find out by accident. If you hit his lightning string he hangs from with both slasher beams at the same time, he falls to the ground and takes massive damage. The balancing side to this is that you position yourself in ways that may make it hard to dodge his webs, and his desperation mode where he fills the screen with a web makes him immune to the same strategy of cutting his web from earlier in the fight.
Was about to mention this when I saw your post.
I can't believe the video left out the part about cutting Web Spider's support web.
Mega Bondagemon Well, it's not exactly an obvious thing to do. Normally you just bully the boss with their weakness and they spaz out as result. Web spider doesn't do that, so it's a bit ambiguous on how twin slasher works on him. I actually discovered the whole web slicing thing on accident and that's why I know about it.
I wish there was more of that in this series.
Mega Man 8 actually required you to use the boss weaknesses specifically for certain special effects.
Yeah, I wish other bosses have this kind of clever trick to trigger weakness weapon rather than just firing at them for all weapons.
That's a cool way to implement the boss weaknesses and it's a shame they didn't do more of it. I'd assume that Capcom didn't have enough time to do that with the other mavericks.
"six out of the eight bosses suffer from spark mandrill syndrome"
Seven, actually. If you aim for Web Spider's web string he falls to the floor and climbs back up without summoning any lightning traps.
Really now? Haha. Welp, that's seven out of eight, then. At least you kind of have to figure it out, so I'll give Web Spider that. The other six just break with no effort.
I dont know HOW I found you but I'm so glad I did
Definitely agree on most points of your video but the music just wraps this game up so well... I can't hate it just like I love X6 haha
Welcome aboard, man!
I finally finished X4 last week. If I get any free time I'll tackle X5 as well. Probably my 11th time re-watching this video because it has so much gosh darn information. Keep it up!
cjszero01 Cj, what are u doing here?
Did you ever play X5
@@SantaFeSuperChief1 Yes I have. I have also been able to play the others thanks to the Megaman X Legacy Collection.
*You can freeze fires?*
> realization that I played this game for 10 years without knowing this
So I saw the comments before watching this and I had zero idea what you meant. Then I reached 21:25 and shouted YOU CAN DO THAT??
Me too, wtf
@@Manas-co8wl took me 4 years to go back and see my comment was apparently autocorrected to nonsense
If you think Jet Stingray's ride chaser level is bad, wait until you play X7 and X8.
You mean X5 and X7? X8's wasn't nearly as bad.
***** No, I mean X7 and X8. Kraken's stage is pretty easy. But Boarski's and Man-O-War's stages are complete hell.
Silver da Hedgehog 2006 Oh, I thought you meant Avalanche Yeti, the actual ride chaser stage in X8. Yeah, Man-o-War does suck... but not as much as picking up those tiny little pellets in Squid Adler's stage.
X5 and X8.
X7 was piss easy when you slow down.
X5 is beginners trap, and still a pain even after you played it 10 times over.
X8, Well, let's just say I'm glad Man-o-War is killable with default weapons.
KaZ Neosis X7's being easy didn't make it any good. If anything, it was probably the worst one, lol. It controlled like shit, it was either stupidly slow or so fast that you'd miss every objective... it was just a huge fucking mess like the rest of that game.
X4 was my first Mega Man X game and it remains my favourite. The stages and bosses are memorable, the 2D art is impressive compared to previous instalments. But probably my favourite part is having the ability to play through the game with both characters, each with their own story. Who would've thought Double looked that awesome? The Sigma boss fight is also the most bad ass one out of all the games.
ashfury same
Not my first, but its still my favorite
I remember being a 7 year old kid, I was aware of Megaman but just as this cutesy silly old game, but then I saw X4 on my cousin's (japanese version, thank god) with it's violent anime cut scenes. F*cking blew my mind, still a big fan to this day
If there is ever any game I can say that I have mastered it would have to be Megaman X4. I became so good in this game that I could do speed runs as both X and Zero without loosing a single health point through out the entire game. X5 and X6 were definitely much harder games, Megaman X4 just has such a great pace, it felt so fast and smooth
I honestly I like Destroying the Mavericks with their weaknesses its the funniest part to me personally. However I do understand way too many Mavericks get Stunned and Stuck into a Repeating Death Cycle for themselves when using their Weakness
There's a certain type of guilty pleasure to it, but good game design it ain't, haha. Especially when it's so many of them it's disappointing and it really wears in the boss rush section.
I think makes the Boss Rushes Faster and that why Capcom has it that way because after going through All the stages you Really what to fight them without their Weakness? At least that's my Thought Processes when it comes to the boss rush you want to get through it as fast as you can so you can get to sigma. You Could think of them being Easier to kill as a reward for experimenting with the Weapons. But honestly for Any Mega Man game its kinda like that it just worse in this one because it Stuns A lot of the bosses and sets them into a Pattern Reset which makes the fights Faster but boring.
You hit the nail on the head with the last sentence. The bosses shouldn't completely break as much as they do when the weaknesses are used. It kills all the challenge rather than reducing it by giving you a bit of an advantage, and this shows at its worst with the boss rush since all the bosses are fought back to back. :)
Pretty Much I've been looking at and playing Megaman Since I was 10 and I will tell you X1-6 for me is fun a few them have problems and in your reviews you point them out. I honestly can't wait to hear what you have to say about the rest of the series. I do have a question About the Classic series think you'll ever do those?
X4s voice acting it's so bad it's good
WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOOOOOOR???
HU HA HOO !!
4:52 Don't forget the "I SHOULD'VE BEEN THE ONE TO FILL YOUR DARK SOUL WITH LIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!" scene, which is from another Capcom game. Also, loving the editing and the review. :)
You can swap audio for both scenes and it works pretty well, too! Hahaha.
Thanks for the comment!
+Retropolis Zone No problem man. I know this is kind of offtopic, but there's an indie platforming game in the works called "Spark The Electric Jester". It's like a mix of Sonic (mostly) Kirby and Megaman X and it's pretty awesome.
The game is made by LakeFeperd aka the guy who made Sonic fan games like Sonic Before the Sequel and After the Sequel. There is a demo available for the game on his UA-cam channel and even have some footage of the game on my (worthless) channel. Shameless advertising, I know...
I just adore that game and can't wait for the full release. Might as well spread the word somehow and hope you'll like it too. :)
I've heard of Spark the Electric Jester and seen a trailer for it. Looks pretty cool. Thanks for mentioning it again. :)
Great review. This is my personal favourite of the X series. It felt like it took a lot of thematic cues from the first X game, but was able to do so much more with the advanced hardware.
Also for the record I LOVE the music to Cyber Peacock's stage, it's my personal favourite Maverick theme.
X4 is the best soft reboot the series could've possibly have
"Raiwuenjiin"... "Rakkuhuuhaa"... god, I love it when people who don't know how try to pronounce Japanese. Not even meant in an offensive way, I legitimately love it. It's just too funny! xD
Really enjoy your videos. 40 minutes of pure goodness.
That's great, man. Thanks! :D
The Legend of Spyro games are not in the cards for a long time, I'm afraid. Sorry.
Thanks for subscribing, though. :)
Personal thoughts, I didn't think they were that bad (with exception of the third one which I found to be a clunky mess). The first two kept some semblance of the classic template still there despite some drastic directional changes in gameplay, and they feel pretty competently designed and fun, despite some linear level designs. I'll still play the classics before them, but they're worth at least trying out (again, except the third one.)
Retropolis Zone i did it to even the bell 🔔 and i liked the video 👍
Ah, it's always a joy to listen to someone's reaction to Megaman X4's and Megaman 8's voice acting for the first time.
Wait... Why am I in that block of ice at 8:54 ?
Chill Penguin someone probably rebuilt you and when you tried to find a new home, well.... let's just say it ended badly for you
At least there's Blizzard Buffalo making you company. :P
Tsuchiryu Bilzzard ;)
"Chill" out Chill penguin
😱
Personally I prefer Naoto Tanaka's compositions for X5 but Toshihiko still did an awesome job on the bgms of X4
I have to wonder what you're going to think when it comes to X5 time... I actually really like that game and it's attention to detail that very much supercedes the quality of the level design. some of the complexity you're begging for comes back in X5, but it does certainly suffer in ways that turned folks off just a bit.
25:27
Actually, On the first phase of the boss fight, If you use the slasher against the spider by aiming at the web it's hanging on it will make the spider fall causing massive damage.
Did you that as Zero, if you hit the General with your Basic combo once, you will deal 50% of his Health in one combo? instead of using your A+Up attack.
You deserve a LOT more subscribers and views. There's a lot of polish in these videos. Keep up the great work, man!
Thank you so much! Let's hope that becomes a reality at some point. :)
Great review dood. There's a lot of good stuff here. I wanted to bring up something that I thought you would like as well.
Sparkmandrill Syndrome bosses.
I wholesomely agree that bosses are trivialized when they are hit with their weakness weapons (as X, and sometimes Zero). But did you notice something special in the boss fight with Double? I dunno if many people realize this but when he's hit with his weakness weapon, not only does he not suffer from the syndrome, but he summons familiars from himself to make the fight harder.
I love this idea a heck of a lot. When bosses are hit with their weakness weapons, they should get desperate and be like "Oh shit, that really hurt! I'll have to make sure THAT move doesn't hit me ever again! O_O" Double does this with 2 weapons he summons when hit with his weakness. I think it would be great if bosses either changed their patterns, or added some form of resistance to help make sure they don't get hit with that again, or at least as easily. I can't recall any other bosses in the entire franchise that does this right now but for now I'm gonna call this the
Double Vaccine.
Well again, great videos dood. made me a subscriber today for these Quickies Don't Cut It series so far haha.
X3 was actually done by a B team at capcom. The gameboy team for the megaman series developed it, which is why the level design has the issues it does, and why so many features don't mesh with the core gameplay as well as x1 and x2. The bosses from X3 also suffer. X4 is more of a follow up to X2, evolving concepts from THAT game. Had X3 been called something else, and X4 been called X3, it would have felt like a natural followup to everyone. Sigma returning and having another cameo makes sense (jedi, wolverine, grim reaper) and X's power suits in X4 kind of build off of the ideas from X2 more than they build off of anything from X3. I kind of feel like the X series, like the Zero series, is truly a 4 part series, with the somewhat good but flawed X5 (alia being the big thing) making up the finale (Similarly to how Z4 ended the Zero series) Although I do still like X8, and consider it a bonus game, opting to skip X3, X6, and X7 when I replay the series.
JackelZXA
The Ride Armor Mechanic was not fully realized. The only boss I find difficult is V Catfish .
By the way X3 surpasses X1 in these regards.
Best Visuals
More Side Bosses (The alternative boss at 1st Doppler stage included)
Best Armors .
Why Zero wasn't fully playable : It would totally wreck the game. And there would be a challenge which Paramounts to a simple smartphone game.
Besides that empty sections, lack of giga attack and patience are the only flaws to bother me.
These issues held it back
X5 is my favorite Mega Man game, X3 is my seccond favorite and X4 is my third favorite, but I think objectively X4 is the best. (Love the ducking and the part system once I figured out how it worked.)
i don't skip any even 7 or 6 all part of my heart
I'm planning on playing the entire x series for the first time once the x legacy collection comes out in a little while
Do you think I should play x1, x2, x4, and x5 and then play the other games for a first time playthrough or should I just play them in release order?
Wow. It's like I wrote all this
WTF I NEVER KNEW YOU COULD FREEZE FIRE
I think what’s needed is a MEGA MAN / ZERO game where it’s 2 player co-op like Contra
I prefer the Japanese voice cast for this and SoTN and Ryōtarō Ōkiayu was in both....
I probably would too if I could understand them. lol
+Retropolis Zone
I watched a subtitled version of Iris's death...and i saved a copy when youtube removed it
Not to mention, in the Japanese version, the Mavericks have pre-fight voice lines before their health fills up. For some reason, the American version doesn't have that. Only Colonel and the Final Weapon bosses have pre-fight voice lines for some reason
Mannn you're videos are super detailed and really well paced for being long. Fantastic work!! +sub
Thanks man :D
this is one of my fav games from my childhood, awesome video, i love the insane amount of stuff put in here, keep up the great work!!!! PS man isnt the soundtrack to this game just fucking epic?
Easily the best written and done review this game ever received. Keep up the good work and keep them coming :)
Thank you, that's really nice to read!
while i enjoy X4 from a gameplay standpoint, it is easily one of my least favorite soundtracks in the entire series, hell X7 was a boring and frustrating mess but i can easily remember tracks from that game, X4 i only can hum them when i play them (aside from stage select which is ironically to me the best in the series).
I actually kind of like the General's voice. I find myself saying "My fate is sealed, I have no choice." to myself when playing games.
God, I love X4 so much. My favorite Megaman game, period.
I would say voice acting in Symphony of the Night is hammy as fuck but still COMPETENT. Everyone (besides the Succubus) sounds like a real voice actor.
Voice acting in X4 is just amateurish. Tommy Wisseau tier.
I went through all Megaman X games when I was at university, and I'm planning to do another run to show my missus how awesome (for the most part) the series was. X4 was probably my favourite!
X4 is widely considered to be one of, if not the best game in the Mega Man series. However reception from critics was lukewarm. Why? Because it wasn't 3D. Dead serious. That's it. Most complaints can be summed up as "2D is stale. 3D is cooler."
A tip for future playthroughs, you can dash in mid air on jet sting rays stage. That'll probably make it easier to get the heart container.
This game was the most fun mega man game to play, going through it as zero was a top tier experience.
I dunno, Megaman 8 is really awful as you can hear the actors flubbing their lines. Which means they literally only did one take.
I just can’t get into the x456 art style. X123 was nice. Z1234 was god like
This game is my favorite out of the second trilogy in ps era. It was a classic like mmx 1, x5 and 6 introduced that virus shit, the timing of every stage, saving people & having like 4 different armors.
I love this game more than any other, but here are some minor flaws I think some people overlook.
Weaknesses as Zero. Jet Stingrays weakness is the frost blade or whatever. Which is bullshit cause he spends most time above you! And when he is down, hes either using his vaccum, or dashing into you. Next is Slash Beasts weakness and are you kidding me... the lighting attack which makes ZERO SENSE when you put a slow attack against a fast boss.
The game panders to X way more than Zero. Way more. Bosses all suffer from Spark Mandrill syndrome with X's weapons. As Zero, Slash Beast, Magma Dragoon and hell... even Web Spider can kick your shit if you dont know what you're doing (Edit: I wrote this before I finished the video. You actually went over it as well. Credit to you.)
Sorry, But Split Mushrooms stair segment has to go. Maybe it's a personal thing, but watching the stairs move beneath me like that just confuses me for some reason...
Frost Walrus is fucking slow. Oh here he comes! Sliding! Watch out kiddo! Here I am! Its incredibly painful/noticeable in the boss rush. Everyone else is more or less fast paced and then we have this guy. Reminds me of Toad Man in that regard.
The Weapon can is SOMEWHAT useless. Weapon energy lasts a good while, and the helmet makes it use no energy! And as Zero? You tell me. (You also went over this? wholly shit...)
Shippuga is easily the most forgettable attack as Zero. No joke I actually forgot it existed until accidentally using it in the Sigma fight.
Double is an annoying fight. Iris is an annoying fight. They both suck. If you dont know what you're doing, it's a lives drainer. If you do know what you're doing, a time waster
Colonel and Genreal have some lame fights. As X, cling to the wall and drop frost tower when he teleports beneath you. As Zero, cling to the wall and just tickle him with your Saber before he releases the energy breaker. Fighting General? Again... cling to the fucking wall. Shoot him with charge shots or tickle him with your Saber when he's beneath you. Its LAME. However Colonel is fun to fight when you're not pussying out and squirreling away on the wall. But Genreal is just god awful. Easily my least favorite castle boss. His thicc sprite means if you slip and fall on him theres no escape. You will take damage. And quite a bit. And talk about a static character. He just... floats. And most times hes off screen! How is that nice? Who thinks "general is my favorite." The game hypes you up with his character and then hes this? Someone who barely moves!? C'mon Capcom. That's just lazy. And quick question... what's his weakness? Has anyone bothered? I just Buster his ass no problem but I'm curious.
Also, using the lightning attack as Zero on an enemy with a shield, or on an invincibility frame, will slow it all down. Try it on Slash Beast or Magma Dragoon. You'll see what I mean.
ALSO... Iris' Sprite in the opening stage (When she's down on the ground) is ugly. With a Sprite as small as hers her eyes should have been made a bit smaller. But no. They're beady little fucks and really it's just three circles on a white face.
But let's talk about the bosses in depth
Web Spider likes to throw electric webs at you. They're slow, so hitting them is your fault. The mini spiders, while annoying is small in numbers. So taking them out is once again a piece of cake. But here's my problem... he has only two moves. That's kinda sad. Couldn't spare him abother move, Capcom?
Cyber Peacock is interesting. He'll teleport to you and either jump up or elongate his feathers or some shit. He does have another move however where he spawns missels which is his desperation attack. Kinda lame but hey. What gets the job done right?
Storm Owl is actually buckets of fun. Getting his pattern right feels great and he has many diffrent attacks which keeps his character fresh. As Zero its kind of annoying but can be mastered quickly. I do have to say his wind pillars can come out of nowhere and his double cyclone can be tough to dodge. But the platform in the center makes up for that by making it easier to dodge.
Magma Dragoon is a nice fight once mastered, but first play you spend your time just running as he rapes you from beyond. Especially as Zero. However when hes breathing fire or summoning meteors hes extremely vulnerable which means you get to rape him back. To dodge his fire breath just jump over and attack him from behind. His meteors I have no clue. His hadokens can be jumped over and shorykuen backed away from. His weakness rips him to shreds however so minus points there
Jet Stingray is fun as X. Blast the drones and hit Stingray. Then move accordingly. Zero however has a tougher time since hes above you and the range of the buster is gone. Getting up close means you'll most likely get hit if he switches to the vaccum. And a hit from the saber merely tickles him! A fun fight wasted as Zero. Shame.
Split Mushtard will spawn in holograms to chase after you. Jump accordingly and you're fine. But screw that up and you'll get hit. And youll keep getting hit. When he spawns in his clone hell breaks lose as if you lose track, the clone looks exactly the same so good luck. But again, jump accordingly and it's no problem. He blends well with X and Zero so major props.
Slash Beast is easy as X. Nail him from a distance and your fine. As Zero you're kinda screwed. If he decides to grab you you just lost a chunk of health. Or if he wants to charge you most likely got hit. He does take a second to wind up his attack however but if you're too slow on that regard you're done for. Even still you're up close as Zero so you must plan ahead or risk a hit.
Finally, Frost Walrus. Like I said. His speed kills the pace. However I like the fact his ice based attacks are a bit more fun to dodge and compliment both characters. His Sprite is huge however and he has one shitty hit box. If planned just right you can actually pass your bottom half through his shoulder no damage. Most large bosses have a problem with their hit boxes I've noticed. It's just a thing at this point.
But like I said, this game is one of my favorites EVER. And I've played it many many many many many times. These nit picks are small potatoes compared to its good side.
Iris does get some back story in Mega Man Xtreme 2 on the Game Boy Color. In Xtreme 2, the story takes place between the events of X3 and X4 and it's here we Iris once worked for the Maverick Hunters as a navigator and developed a relation with Zero. After Xtreme 2, Iris leaves Maverick Hunter HQ to join Repliforce presumably with her older brother and thus kick starts the events of Mega Man X4.
I specifically brought up Xtreme 2 so that people won't have to point it out to me in the comments. You had one job, mate. :')
Jk, I don't mind. I think it's funny, is all. Haha.
Lure sigma's scythe throw when he goes to throw it for the second time with a jump so that it hits the wall instead. It makes dealing with him so much easier. At that point simply jump over his head and there's space behind to attack him.
I think Mega Man X special weapons should _not_ be this elemental-weakness-style thing. That's an inherent flaw in the Mega Man formula, it's not good. *Rather, I think they should be useful, and good against specific bosses, **_purely because of how the shots behave and what areas they cover._*
A storm shot that is as wide as X and spans the screen vertically while ignoring walls, ceilings and floors, maybe to beat a boss that often jumps above a ceiling and attacks from there, meaning you don't have to wait until he comes down, but instead use that storm shot... a spread shot to hit a boss that flies in the sky in an arena without walls (thus no walljumping/-sliding), instead of waiting for the phases where he lands... a shot that travels along floors and walls starting from X, maybe for a boss that regularly puts up a shield that can be circumvented by that floor-traveling shot instead of waiting for the shield to go down... and so on.
This would make all special weapons inherently useful in stages _and_ on bosses, _without_ rendering bosses utterly wrecked. They wouldn't even have to do more damage than the X-Buster, it'd just be about the sheer utility of the various types of shots these weapons could perform. It would also actually reward observation on boss encounters, because you could figure out _just by being observant_ which special weapon will work on any given boss... instead of weakness order guesswork.
And the final stages could then challenge your knowledge on how to use _all_ these special weapons by going through various bosses with various phases that all respectively allow for great and tricky use of one or two specific special weapons of the bunch.
*_THAT_** is what I'd really like to see.*
14:30 Its not that complicated. You don't need to boost-jump, just boost in the air and the bike will dash forward destroying the boxes and getting the item. Its fairly easy, you just didn't realized the correct way to execute that jump.
UA-cam recommended videos pull through once again.
Good shit my nigga. I very much enjoyed this review and I'll be back for more.
Ah, so it must be UA-cam's recommended videos that's giving me a boost on this video, at the moment.
Thanks, man! Glad to read. :)
No problem! I cant wait to see more! Hopefully you'll go up to X8!
Eventually, but after finshing X5 and X6 as next reviews, I'm probably Mega Man'd out for a bit. Haha.
It's a really nice review overall, plenty of points were analyzed.. Some things I just wanna point out: During the first half of the Web Spider battle, you can hit his web with Twin Slasher, causing him to fall and take a lot of damage. Also, you can entirely cheese out 3 bosses with Zero. You mentioned Cyber "Cock" :v, Split Mushroom can be hit with Raijingeki after he summons the illusion clones, and against Jet Stingray you can jump under him and hit him with the ice sword (forgot the name), since it has a hitbox above Zero for some reason.
Thank you! Yes, I have been told about Web Spider's cheese, I totally overlooked that one, lol. I did know about the Raijingeki against Split Mushroom, but you do kind of have to time and aim your attacks well so I feel like it wasn't completely broken.
X4 is by far my favorite Mega Man game of all time. It is when they literally perfected the series in my eyes. It's a freaking BLAST to play as Zero in this one!
24:34 this is the main reason why I started going on buster only runs, and it started with this game in particular.
I love fighting these Mavericks without their weakness, because their attack patterns are fun to watch. Highlights include split mushroom, magma dragoon, Frost walrus, and cyber peacock
X4 is the best out of the series
Kaiz The Monster X1 is
William White You wrote X4 wrong.
Another great, in-depth review! Good job, RZ. I liked the spoiler warning in the beginning too.
Your comment is very much appreciated, man!
Lost my shit at the "Screw Attack!" holy shit
When the colonel was talking I thought he was speaking japanese with how fast and disarrayed his words were.
tha k you for covering most of the soundtrack all of the reviews I watch barely dive into it. great video. consider me subbed.
Shattering bosses with the correct item is a bonus for using the correct item.
The problem is that people CHEAT BY GETTING THE INFORMATION FROM WEB FAQ
I APPRECIATE X4 and X5 for having awesome music and forgiving checkpoints.
X4 and X5 are easier and less frustrating than MM3.
Whoa!! :O Just learned something new! I've been a fan and re-player of X4 since 1997, and I never knew that Zero's downward thrust attack could freeze the fire arcs in Dragoon's stage!
And X's Frost tower can do that too?! :O
The original japanese dub of X4 is absolutely fantastic; Ryotaro Okiayu has been voicing Zero since that game, and still voices Zero is his most recent appearances, including Marvel VS Capcom Infinite. I recommend watching the X4 cutscenes in japanese even if you don't understand the language. Every line has so much feeling into it. The japanese version of X4 has a fantastic opening song (Makenai ai ga Kitto Aru).
Not to mention, the 8 Maverick bosses have pre-fight voice lines in the Japanese version, which surprises me that they didn't add this in the American version
Superb vid, and I hate to pick favorites but I've got to say I've really missed your 2D reviews in particular. I by no means mean to suggest restricting your range of content, but the way your method of review fully fleshes out the good and bad components of older games despite their dated appearance works so well to perfectly puts into words, and images, where the foundation of these games was, i.e. gameplay and level design and so, and why there is and always will be so much to be learned from them.
In an era of questionable quality development and reviewing you're doing prophet's work by saying what needs to be said not just what people want to hear, keep it up.
Very nice comment to read. I am glad all the hard work and countless upon countless of hours producing these reviews is achieving at least something. :D
08:57 Chill Penguin FROZEN in the back is the coolest easter egg. Get it? COOLEST
*BA, DUM, TSSHH*
Penguins also lay eggs.
Tiago Passarela uuuuuuugh!
Tiago Passarela wait, HOW AND WHY IS HE THERE???
I guess it is to show that the Ice boss from that stage is far superior than him.
28:42 if you time your shots correctly, you can still kick his ass even while he's still wearing his armor. It took me years to learn that until I went for a buster-only run, but it is indeed possible
I honestly believe that Armored Armadillo is not as bad as people make him out to be. Sure, he CAN be intimidating to fight buster only at first, but it's not like he is essentially immune to damage while he has his armor still. Another thing that I think makes fighting him easier is not charging your buster: not only does it not hurt him anymore than an uncharged shot would, but it also makes him unable to perform his most dangerous attack as well
In a way, you can actually easily beat Magma Dragoon first, since he is one of three bosses in the series you can face with a ride armor if you keep it alive all the way through. Although I can still say he is a challenge if you count the ride armor as a powerup and thus exclude him.
It's funny 'cause I found out about this Ride Armor trick in Magma Dragoon's fight after this video. I love these types of little details in the level design that you can totally overlook, but put a smile on your face once you find them. :)
Ignore that, I've jumped the gun again. Regardless, still feels like a "HEY, NEW CHARACTER!" deal.
Terrific video. I've always been a big fan of Megaman.
Gracias! X5 and X6 are up next, so you're in for a treat. :D
Can't wait to see you play the speedbike level in X5 if you thought the X4 one was shitty, haha.
Dude... Fuck the speedbike level in X5... lmao
Looking back at this video I think that the charged up versions of the weaknesses would flinch the bosses as it would reward the player for getting the arm upgrade and gives a player a choice of whether they should charge up their attacks to hit the bosses for a great deal of damage and flinch them but takes a lot of ammo or use the weakness with less ammo reduction but less damage and you don’t make the boss flinch
Very cool video! Thanks for sharing!
Web Spider can be ripped from his web during the 1st phase with the Twin Slasher, resulting in extra damage, but he will take a moment to reset his pattern thus the Spark Mandrill System effect.
Jet Stingray's level can be gimped as soon as you start the 2nd half, use the bike's dash attack on Stingray and he will take crippling damage, removing him as a hazard in the remainder of the stage, getting the items however yeah is a bit difficult and not game breaking.
Single best stage in the game and boss is Magma Dragoon's great boss, great hazards and also the fact that Magma Dragoon is effectively Ryu/Ken/Akuma from Street Fighter, but also a dragon!
Sigma this time however, is the weakest version in the series, using only the X-Buster and Sigma is still too easy to beat, it's silly, especially how dangerous he was in X3 in both forms, where is none of his 4 forms were able to do even real damage....This is a good review overall, but it would have been nice if we got a Hard mode with the game.
Not to mention Magma Dragoon is a really fun and challenging boss, especially when you're playing as Zero
Sigma in X3 only took me 10 minutes Sigma in X4 on the other hand took me 2.5 hours...
It really depends on how well you know where to land your blows and where to go to evade his attacks. Once you know all these, X4 Sigma is a joke. But finding them can be a hassle on the first run especially with Zero
You can just charge the Rolling Shield to farm on X1's final stage.
I am well aware and it makes the health farming pretty damn quick in that game. That said, you'd have to know about the charged Rolling Shield in the first place. I was more so stating that just for comparison's sake; how much worse X4's situation actually is.
I see. Yeah, in hindsight that only aggravates X4's (and all other X games, really) situation.
In X2 you can charge your sub tanks quick in bubble crabs stage. There's a secret room when the big fish opens the gate to go down right on the left side under the gate. If you charge the silk shot a bunch of energy appears and you can do it as many times as you need. Makes filling sub tanks in x2 simple
Best 32 bit Mega Man by a long shot. It's a shame they didn't put the same level of care into the sequels.
Just found this channel and I really like your content, Personally I enjoy the little snippets of the game soundtrack that you include. Very nice.
Welcome aboard and hopefully you'll enjoy your stay. :D
I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet, but Spider is really weak to twin slasher. The trick is that you need to aim the two slashers at the string of web he descends on. Hitting that will knock Spider down onto the ground, taking a huge chunk of damage.
Under 400 club, how much are you... "rock"ing
Those views aren't very accurate. It's more like 650 in actuality according to my analytics.
Wait, can't you just restart a game over from any checkpoint? That makes the EX tank _worse than useless_ because it forces you to die more times against Sigma in order to re-start the level with energy capsules you can put toward your E-tanks?
Great job reviewing one of my favorite X games. You did not talk about the cheat codes, although this is my first time watching your content and I dont really know if you focus on that or not. Anyways, fantastic job, subscribed.
Well I am glad you enjoyed the video. :D
I was aware of the cheat codes, but yeah it's not something I focus on in these videos. I focus more on the design; cheat codes just seems irrelevant to me in that case.
Mega man x 4 is one of the best mega man games ever
Wow! I'm a huge fan, man. This is just a terrific review, through and through. Every second of this is well-done worth the watch. I've got to thank you for spending my time so wisely lol
There is no way the voice acting is worse than SotN or Resident Evil 1. You cannot possibly think X4’s is worse than those two.
X4's is really that bad. I'd pick SotN over X4's all day
@@uandresbrito5685 you’ve got issues.
@@infinitygenealpa Nah, grow up
not to be a debbie downer but, you used twin slasher wrong. if both the blades hit web spiders single web that hes hanging from hell bust his shit on the ground and youll do massive damage
Is this my horrible fate that the comments are gonna keep pointing out this overseight I made? Lol.
yes
Great retro review!
Not mentioned in your video, I loved was how the game allowed you to customize your controls while keeping your x buster and special on two different buttons.
While it is a very small detail in the game's mechanics, I felt that it made my experience a lot more enjoyable without pausing or even shouldering my specials when I needed my X buster for that moment in the level without ruining the game's momentum.
REDACTED COMMENT:
Good review. Upon further playthroughs, Mega Man X4 has become my second favorite in the series. I still prefer X2 for the boss battles, artstyle and story presentations, but X4 is pretty strong in many aspects.
ORIGINAL COMMENT
Good review. I personally think this game is good, but I prefer the first two Mega Man X games. X4 felt to me like a retread of familiar territory similar to X1. I wanted a new side quest and all of those armors. I wanted the story to be creative and well thought out (and the Repliforce, while based on a noble cause that gives them humanity, you can see the Sigma Revealed right at the BEGINNING, destroying ANY potential build up).
The X Hunters were great villains because they were cold and calculating. They didn't underestimate X and even interfered when two of their Maverick minions were destroyed. Doppler was great, even though he mentioned serving a master. But for most of the game, it was build up.
And while it's nice to play as Zero, I felt that there should've been some limitations. Instead, they gave him more of a protagonist story arch while X's story had less of an impact. I do think X4 is a very good game, but not a great game like X1, or X4, and definitely not an excellent game like X2. But different strokes for different folks i guess.
I will not claim the first three X games are perfect by any means and X4 is well made, but I just don't see it as masterfully crafted as others, but that's fine by me.
One thing X4 does have over the first three is its amazing soundtrack. I absolutely LOVE IT! :D
The story stuff doesn't hold much weight in these games for me, but I suppose it may for others. Here's my brief takes on the games so far:
X1 is the original with fun weapons and a fantastic soundtrack, but there are some substantial issues with regards to difficulty balancing on bosses. In conjunction with the underwhelming level design and meh level themes, I find the game great but also flawed in some ways.
X2 nicely kinked out most of the issues from its predecessor, making it accessible and overall really well-designed, and the X Hunters added some exploration to the stages and increased the replay value. However, there is a certain blandness to the game, its music and its weapons that I can't quite describe and that is its biggest shortcoming.
X3 has the most amount of depth of the four with all its new upgrades like the enhancement chips and summon-able mechs and the ways to alter the Doppler Stages. It also sports the best graphics of the SNES trilogy, a solid soundtrack and a tasty selection of weapons, but many aspects feel notably sloppy like the boss AI programming and level design with bad camera placement and a lot of empty space.
X4 isn't necessarily impressive - it's a very safe game as I stated - and I could see why you'd find it too similar to its predecessors. That said, I think it's polished and smooth in its design for the majority of the adventure. Bosses are well-balanced and fun (if you don't use the weakness weapons, lol), the stages are varied and memorable, having Zero as a fully playable character is neat and the visuals and music are great.
It's hard to properly rank these games from best to worst, though. I feel it's so super subjective what people look for in their Mega Mans and it depends heavily on my mood and such which X instalment I prefer over which. They all have their own unique strengths and weaknesses and I appreciate them all in different ways. None of the X games have been bad at all so far, they're all worthwhile experiences, and that to me is most important.
Retropolis Zone And that's why the Mega Man fanbase is freaking awesome. Everyone, even if they like the same exact games in a specific order, have different reasons to reach their conclusions.
In my opinion:
X5 (Best)
X2
X
X4
X8
X6 (Guilty Pleasure)
X3
X7 (Trash)
Carlos Eduardo Aguiar my opinion:
X4 (omg this game is so fucking awesome)
X6 (epic)
X1
X3
X2
X5
X8
X7 (shit)
sigma has the legendary plot armor
I always have a blast playing this game. It's just so fun nearly all the time and that above all makes it one of the best in the series. It's also got the best weapons of the X series I think.
I agree that not having any sort of extra variables that changes how you progress through the game like the X-hunters in X2 or the Nightmare Police in X3 is X4's biggest flaw.
It's why I find myself replaying X5 and even X6 more frequently than X4 even though this installment is far more polished than either of its PS1 follow-ups. There's just more stuff that can change on repeat playthroughs in those titles.
25:20 The twin slasher actually used to cut Web Spider's string in the 1st phase (before he go into the center of the room), you need to go fairly high up and make sure that both shots hit the string, it totally wrecks his AI and do a copious amount of damage
I adore everything about X4 almost. Few things about it that I don't like.
Some stages are boring and I can honestly say that I don't care two cents for the rotating staircase that feels like they had to redo it from Mystara Chronicles. The weapons, while some are really neat, feel woefully under-powered and usually not worth the effort compared to massive beast that the Plasma Buster of the Fourth armor is. Some of the songs are pretty lame too, but Storm Owl's theme is just amazing ~
But then there's the good things.
And boy do are they good!
My favorite to play as is X, but I find gaining a flow with Zero by navigating and using all your abilities makes for superb gameplay.
Through really.. X easy, Zero advanced users only? Clearly the developers weren't thinking straight!
Most friends I've made try MMX4 hold to Zero being far more user-friendly and easy to play.
The story is superb ( _though really, play the JP version_ ) and just really setups the coming Zero-series.
X4 is my favorite in the X-series of games.
Followed by X1 and X3.
The worst are X6 and X2 in my book.
X2 is just soooo boring. It's only good part is the fight with Zero.
6 months to make and edit a 40 minute review
eh thats acceptable
What if I told you it was written in three days and edited in three days? ;)
I personally think this is the best X game and definitely my favorite for sure.
You missed the ultimate armor
you never mentioned the street fighter easter egg in any of the reviews for these games
I showcased 'em through footage. Sometimes I trust the viewer to pick up details themselves without me pointing them out.
No surprise here, but great review. I've always wondered about X4 and see if it was good as the previous 3
25:16 ALL of the bosses suffer from Spark Mandrill syndrome. If you manage to cut Web spider's web in the first half of the fight, he drops to the ground and hurts his ass bone. and when you get to cyber peacock stage, using Soul Body against him causes him to freak out. this is exactly why I prefer to go on Buster only runs whenever I play the Megaman X games. the only fight I have ever had a real problem with is cyber peacock.
My favorite hilarious voice clips from Mega Man X4 include but are not limited to:
“It was our destiny to fight.”
“My fate is sealed. I have no choice.”
“I’m gonna recycle you!”
15:40 They use the whole tanks so the games get more tactical and challenging...like taking as many hits possible before changing the tank...BTW to me you sound like you are from The Netherlands...am i right?
