A lot of non-Russian speakers in the comments saying "I don't understand a word of it but I like it" - well, that's exactly how we Russians feel listening for English songs (and songs in any other languages as well)
exactly!
And Dutch peeps like me listening to other languages. The music speaks for itself
I like the thought of a belarusian coming to this video and thinking "wtf are all these english speaking people doing here?"
I do not speak Russian, but i capable to feel the things than these songs comunicate. The music is an universal language.
Greetings from Chile, from the other side of the world.
I looked up the lyrics in english when i had a chance to see why they sounded so depressed. All i can say is it was toska.
Fun fact : This building in video is hotel Panorama in Slovakia ( I live there and I ski every winter this is in local ski resort ) . It was built in 1970 before winter olympic
Taky mě to praštilo do očí, že tu budovu odněkud znám ! A ty škodovky na parkovišti. It hit me also that I know this building ! And those old Skoda Octavia (model year 1960) and MB 1000 it proved.
Just checked it

0:00 "Na dne" is a Russian phrase that translates to "At the bottom" in English. It can refer to a physical location, such as the bottom of a body of water or a hole, but it can also have a metaphorical meaning of being at the lowest point of one's life.
4:07 "Tancevat" is a Russian verb that translates to "To dance" in English.
7:30 "Filmy" is a Russian noun that translates to "Films" or "Movies" in English.
11:47 "Volny" is a Russian noun that translates to "Waves" in English.
16:08 "Toska" is a Russian noun that translates to "Melancholy" or "Longing" in English. It is often used to describe a feeling of deep emotional pain or nostalgia.
19:17 "Prognoz" is a Russian noun that translates to "Forecast" or "Prediction" in English.
22:21 "Sudno" is a Russian noun that means "Ship" in English. In the context of Boris Ryzhy's poetry, it can also have a metaphorical meaning of a vessel that carries one's hopes and dreams.
24:45 "Kommersanty" is a Russian noun that translates to "Businessmen" or "Entrepreneurs" in English.
28:31 "Kletka" is a Russian noun that translates to "Cage" in English. It can be used literally, to describe a physical cage, or metaphorically, to describe a feeling of being trapped or confined.
MEANING OF ALBUM IN ENGLISH
"Этажи" (Etazhi) by Molchat Doma is a song in Russian that translates to "Floors" in English. The lyrics describe the different floors of a building, with each floor representing a different stage in the singer's life. The lyrics are introspective and reflect on the emotions and experiences that the singer has gone through. The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Мы поднимаемся на этажи" (We're climbing the floors), which suggests a sense of progress or moving forward despite the difficulties and challenges that the singer has faced. The overall tone of the song is melancholic, with a sense of nostalgia for the past and a longing for a better future.
Great comment!
Thanks for the name explanations, added some depth to my listening experience.
c'est comme les étages en français. XOPOXO
thank you so much for posting this
Molchat Doma encouraged me to study Russian and getting the cultural meaning of these songs helps me a lot, thank you for explaining these!
Your interpertation of "Sudno" is really intersting. Literally this song is about hospital, in this context "судно" literally means vessel carrying not one's hopes, but natural wastes of patient who cannot walk to toilet room. Metaphore of it as vessel for hopes and dreams made me somewhat uncomfortably chill.

For all the non-Slavs in the comments talking about this sounding like New Order or Joy Division, you have got to check out the Soviet post-punk band Kino, because the influence here is definitely more from Kino (though Kino was heavily influenced by Joy Division, but you can really tell that Kino is the primary reference point here). Go listen to the album "Gruppa Krovi", you'll hear it immediately from the opening track.

I'm from India too
Что то в этом есть. Приятно слушать. Старая добрая классика.
Насчёт классики странное удтверждение... Это современная группа

It takes me back to Yugoslavia.
iv been there in my dream before i kenw tito he was my friend not actualy but in the dream i did, Yugoslavia is the best
I have know idea what he's saying but I feel the vibe and that's universal.
This album feels really similar to the mood, music and feel of my childhood in both 1990s Russia and early 2000s Belarus. It brought me a sense of nostalgia for the Post-Soviet decade. Thank you very much for this ❤️
reminded me of my childhood in poland/ukraine. same feelings
Same feelings from Slovakia
I have no idea how I ended up on this but it's literally my new favorite album now. Thank you.
Такой вайб 90-х,мне очень нравятся эти песни,они как-будто уносят в другую вселенную
Me too
What a great band. I don't understand a thing, but the vibes represent my short stay in Moscow. Greetings from Central America.
Every time I listen to this album I feel like I'm inside a black and white film. It feels great. I don't know anything about Russian, but the rhythm is fantastic.
Я не поняла как подсела на творчество этой группы, как так вообще))))
Обычно.

@@satan5197 Gender is matter... We don't die we are immortal souls. we never lived we never died
Многие из моих знакомых очень удивляются узнав когда написан этот альбом. Будто 80х годов🔥 а музыка топ! Такая знаете под любое настроение. А композиция Волны это просто шедевр 😍 установлена везде на телефоне. Эдакая мрачность и одновременно позитивное давление от слов к самой музыке. В общем так сказать НАЙС👍😎
I think I have come to see your sound as my spirit music. Thanks for existing and making your music, Molchat.
Even if I do not understand words, I love your sounds.
The name of this band "Молчат дома", possible to translate like "Homes are keep silence"
So, i mean Molchat is not the name)
Музыка до мурашек
На каждом проигрыше
Тоска по чему то далекому
Good music guys , keep it up! Greetings from Chile
