The UK produces about 1.5% of global CO2 emissions but we've the only government in the world that has legally bound its country to impoverishing emission targets. We helped subsidise China, as they build one coal-fired power station every week. After the "Paris Accord" they happily told us that they intend to double their CO2 output by 2030. India intends to treble it (this is why Trump pulled the plug, although msm missed out that bit). We still give those countries our money. Meanwhile, the working citizens of Britain are being driven into the mire.
Net Zero is the greatest threat to this country. I believe it is going to cost thousands of jobs and they will not be replaced by so called green jobs. The UK plan is to do away with rather than replace. In the next few years we will be drip fed on what we will have to do without, like flying, driving, eating meat etc. Only the top 10% will have these privileges. Mass redundancies will follow as they close airports like Gatwick, Luton, Manchester and Stansted. Farming will be ditched in favour of imported food, farms will be rewilded for the sake of the environment. Thousands of people involved in any trade related to cars or the roads jobs will be lost.

My issue is that it's not cleaner. Ethanol comes from plant material, that requires crops to be grown, which requires fertilizer, pesticides, and a ton of fossil fuels...which means more CO2! Whenever you add extra steps in this sort of system you increase emissions because you are decreasing efficiency.
@Thomas You're assuming that all ethanol used in vehicles comes from that process, a by-product which could be used in other ways and which, if diverted to fuel, means we have to make ethanol to replace it. The end result is less efficient than simply burning petrol. Then you have the issue with ethanol damaging car seals in older vehicles and even in new vehicles it will wear gaskets and seals more quickly, which means we have to make more of them, which means more emissions and these products often require petroleum to create. Even using land which is not suitable for food production in order to grow these crops causes harm as you are removing natural habitats. So no I wasn't being misleading.
@Thomas you people are mental..... do you not know what daily products use ethanol ? you need to go find out before sprouting such bullshit... its the oil company's who start these myths and you catch on and dont even know your being lied to.

@@Tony-gg3nd because the batteries have a huge carbon cost to manufacture but also because they have very short service lives. Look at the right to repair legal case going on in the US. Tesla among others deliberately design EVs to be impossible to repair and require the replacement of entire sub assemblies rather than individual parts. This is especially true for battery packs if a small component fails. Theres many small components that could have been designed to be easily replaced when they break but have been deliberately designed to be unrepairable short of throwing the whole battery. This is creating lots of unnecessary waste. Imagine if you had to replace the whole engine because the spark plugs couldn't be changed. Sounds ridiculous right? Very wasteful wouldn't you say? Well that's the sort of design route these EVs are going down. I'm a Design Engineer myself and to be "green" things should be designed to be easily repairable down to individual parts as much as possible to avoid the unnecessary replacement of still usable parts. Things should also be designed with a long service life to reduce replacement cycles. None of these are true for EVs

Ethanol is what dragsters run on due to it being a higher octane and it ignites faster. But to do this your engine must be tuned to run on it. All cars on the road are tuned to run on petroleum only, so we are running fuel on our cars that are not tuned to use. So this means less power and more fuel consumption.
It takes more btu of heat energy to make ethanol than it makes when you burn it . It’s kind of a subsidy for corn farmers in the USA . California has been burning e10 for years . It attacks aluminum and rubber parts . It really screws up chain saw carburetors. The oxygen sensors in modern engines compensate by burning more of the fuel .
It's alleged that the E5 is to be rebranded as the super unleaded whilst the actual super is removed from sale? However you will be paying the higher price of the super allegedly?
Ethanol can be removed from petrol using Water, food dye and a clear fuel drum. the process is quite easy, so if you have a classic car/ motorcycle this may the way forward. It would also prolong life of garden equipment. Mix 1 litre of water with a couple of drips of food dye. Pour 10 litres of petrol (E10 or E5) into a 24 litre drum (best if you have type with a tap in lid) add the coloured water, and shake. Leave for 24 hours. the water will settle from petrol (and is dyed the colour you added) drain this off using tap. if E5 you will get 1400ml of water out, E10 1800mls. the rest will be old fashioned petrol. I would add a treatment like redex to supplement but still good for the long run.
I wonderd why my car ran the same lol. My car is filled up from scrap cars (drive ins) there is always water in the bottom of the drum 25l clear i pour the fuel into another drum and leave the water. In a clear drum you can see the petrol settled at the bottom. So unkown to me my car has ethanol free petrol in. Since iv owned it. Ill have to do the same for my mx bike but with fresh petrol.

If you have a HIGH-performance car you might notice a bit of performance hit. But then again, High-performance car owners wouldn't even care if the fuel is cheaper by a few pennies or care about the environment and would buy regular or even high-octane fuel.
@@spekenbonen72 For we with low performance engines, it doesn't matter whether we notice or not. I never drive with my foot flat to the floor like the rich bunch. Lower energy fuel just means a tiny bit more throttle all the time to drive in my usual careful way. You'd never notice it, until you find your fuel consumption is higher and you fill up more often. When they get up to E20 or more, you probably will notice the difference, if your car is still running.
@@davidclough3951 Doesn't matter whether you measure in BThUs, Therms, kWhrs, Joules, ergs, calories or whatever. These are all measures of energy, so it determines how much work the fuel can make the motor do. Ethanol has a lower energy density (measured in BThU/litre, kWhr/litre, J/l, calories per 100g, or whatever), so you get less energy from each litre of fuel you buy and can get less work from each litre - less mileage from each litre or more litres per 100 km. I'm not sure what you mean by "steam power". The old James Watt steam engines are not as efficient as modern internal combustion engines, so they are not used much, except for entertainment. If we get hydrogen combustion engines, they will be steam engines, because they burn hydrogen to produce steam. Then, exactly like Watt's engine, the steam pushes on a piston to do work. The only difference is that the combustion is inside the cylinder, which enables increased efficiency. Current engines are mixed steam engines, as they convert fuel to CO2 and steam, which together push the pistons. Old external combustion steam engines were less efficient than internal combustion engines because the steam was at a lower temperature and pressure. The coal (or any fuel) had to be burnt to produce heat which was then transferred to water and steam. Therefore the steam has to be cooler than the flame (otherwise the heat would not flow.) In IC engines the steam is created exactly at the temperature of the flame. It is a fundamental thermodynamic principle which applies to all heat engines, that the efficiency improves as the heat source temperature increases..

You can remove the ethanol from the petrol by adding water and shaking it for a few minutes then taking the water and ethanol out. If you use food colouring its easier to see the difference. For five litres use two litres of water then use a none ethanol fuel additive afterwards to make it have a higher octane because the ethanol makes it have a higher octane.
For small engines, garden machinery and the like, it is worth removing the ethanol. This is a relatively simple operation but impractical for vehicular use.

@alice young
Good point. :)
@Thomas
You're assuming that all ethanol used in vehicles comes from that process, a by-product which could be used in other ways and which, if diverted to fuel, means we have to make ethanol to replace it.

Methanol is what drag cars run! E85 is for street legal drag cars!

Lower energy density? Are you basing this on BTUs? Cause last time I checked, vehicles on the road weren't steam powered.
The ethanol rots the rubber fuel lines that then damages the injector pump.
I have a six month old BMW 3 series sport and had to fill up on E10 because I was low on fuel and the garage only had E10. Within a few minutes of driving with E10 the car was miss firing at low speed. Amazing how fast E10 was introduced, I guess they know we are so compliant …

Great point!
It's not practical if you are a professional gardener. We work hard enough. I just buy ethanol free and charge my customers extra. Not filtering gallons of fuel through water.

Let's just hope they don't remove or contaminate the Super in the near future.
E10 became mandatory in The Netherlands two years ago. I fly a small airplane with an engine developed in the '80's. It's rated to use Mogas. The rubber seals swelled up, the fuel lines disintegrated, leaving a blocking sludge in the fuel filters. A car will stop on the roadside. A plane has no such luxury. Luckily I found out early enough. After changing out the rubbers, I had to switch to Shell V-power which (for the time being) is labelled 'E5'. This means 'up to 5% Ethanol'. The good news thusfar, there seems to be 0% Ethanol in it.

Premium fuel is definitely better. However increasing the two stroke oil content made starting easier.
Regular petrol and oil mix will only stay fresh for about 4 weeks so use it up or you will experience problems when starting chainsaws etc. The alternative is engineered fuel pre mixed which has a lot more harmful pollutants removed but is stable for about 18 months.
