Potions From Harry Potter made Real! | How to Drink

- Escape with me to Hogwarts where I'll be your new Potion's Master, today we're brewing up Amortentia, Felix Felicis, and Pepperup Potion. Don't be late, or there will be house demerits!
Today I'm brewing up draughts of three very well known potions from the Wizarding World and I hope you're taking notes on this because there will be a quiz at the end of class. Sorry, couldn't help myself. The world of Harry Potter contains so many evocative potions that it would be easy to wind up with a 90 minute episode here, so instead let's focus on three well known potions and we'll meet for another class down the road, ok? Amortentia, Felix Felicis and Pepperup Potion are all mentioned at pivotal moments in the series and occupy a fair amount of both screen time and page space, so they seemed to be fantastic places to start. In all of these cases I had to make difficult decisions about whether to take from the book description of the films depictions, as there are differences between them. I tried to strike a balance, though it seems a may have leaned a bit more towards the book than the films. Amortentia is described as smelling like whatever the imbiber is attracted too, giving it an ever changing quality. Felix Felicis is described as looking like molten gold. For the pepperup potion we get clearer descriptions of it's effects than it's appearance, so I'm going from there.

Yay thank you for this I have been wanting you to make the love potion:)

The fact that I would never expect Potter themed content in March just makes this post that much more epic. This has beyond made my day.
Same! Here within the first 7 minutes and totally worth it. I hope he keeps this series up!
The funny thing in Germany its on tv right now at this moment so the timing couldn't be more perfect for me 😅
What time of year would you expect it?? It's not a specifically seasonal series
@@Rose-jz6sx You're totally right, it isn't a seasonal series per se other than the division of the school year from the summers, but in the movies specifically there is a lot of focus around Halloween early on because it is about magic etc. and that's how a lot of people identify with that sort of stuff. Even more than that though HP has always felt like a Christmas series. Harry always struggles with not having his own family particularly around the holidays, but is taken care of by the Weasleys, his friends, and of course his school. And all the feasting throughout the books definitely reminds me of the holiday months :D
@@kennyblakenship funny to me summer is the season that stands out the most from the series. But then I have stronger links to the books so maybe thats why

"Amortentia, the most powerful love potion in the world"
*slams down bottle of tequila*
Guaranteed, instant love
If you're into Harry Potter you may enjoy the supercarlinbrothers channel. They do a lot of Harry Potter theories. And when describing Felix felices for their video they have an outtake that they kept in the video which I love where the brother who's presenting asks off screen to the other one if we're really sure they're not just making tequila.
Nah. I used to be big into tequila before I gave myself alcohol poisoning chugging it, but even when I still liked it, it never made me attracted to someone I wasn't into sober. Alcohol doesn't do that, it just makes you more willing to get with someone you're too chicken to admit to being into when sober.
Instead of the gold luster you could make a simple with gold colored sugar that you could buy in most grocery stores. I've tried it testing out some St. Patrick's drinks (that never got served, unfortunately) and it worked pretty well.
Interesting, I'm Irish and we don't have gold coloured sugar readily available but we do have lustre dust in most grocery shops
Pretty! I like to rim glasses with colored sugar.
@@Rose-jz6sx In New Zealand, we don't have either
You're like the Half-Blood Prince writing your own changes to the recipe in the margins of your books
He's only half-blood because the other half is alcohol.
@@Hey-Its-Dingo
Would that give him the same properties of a drunken kungfu master? Always tipsy but can name every potion ingredient known to wizard.
Why no Living death drink? Keeping that recipe to yourself, lest it fall into the wrong hands?
It's probably just Everclear or straight up 151. 😂
@@mommyneedsmoscato121 I was going to say the exact same!
Corpse Reviver
1 part absinthe, 2 parts everclear, stir over dry ice
Don't forget the powdered root of asphodel! In fact, considering that wormwood is a classic ingredient of absinthe, an absinthe mix with some sort of floral note (asphodel is a type of lily) would be the perfect representation of the Draught of Living Death
The Shaking Cauldron is an EXCELLENT name for a Harry potter theme Bar.
Now, do be careful when mixing potion ingredients. Add too little and the potion is unstable and weak, Add too much and your mixture could spontaneously combust. So, do be careful. We don't want any unnecessary trips to the medical facilities.
not just combust but explode, melt the cauldron, release toxic gas....really do all manner of things, no wonder snape is always in a bad mood, can you imagine the stress of trying to teach children a art where they could very well blow themselves up?
Wait the potions got Real effects ??
Well, Snape created work arounds in his old potions book and through working hard became an excellent potions master. While not publishing his fix ups for the wizarding community so he can see how his students can or can’t screw up potion class.
Since finding this channel Greg has slowly revealed himself to be the epitome of the big nerd energy that I didn't even know I was striving for.
Professor Sazerac Snape.
My partner hasn't stopped squeaking with joy since she recieved the notification for this video. Thank you for bringing joy into the world.
This reminds me of the potion store owner that has "potion of perceived strength" and "elixer of bravery" and they all have the side effects of decreased dexterity, increased volume and morning headache. And the customer says "are these all booze?" and the owner replies "nope. some are mixers"
Fun fact: In D&D 5e the spell False Life requires "A small amount of alcohol or distilled spirits" as a material component, as well as having verbal and comatic components. This spell just gains you 1d4+4 temporary hit points, which doesn't heal your old ones. Basically it just makes you FEEL like you have more health for a little bit.
So you're basically just doing a shot and yelling "COME AT ME BRO." That's it, that's the spell.
Immediate like!
I've got tons of potion bottles lying around... I'm thinking when my spouse gets laid off next week, we'll have a Potter marathon and sip on these since we actually have several of the ingredients. :D Thank you for the bright highlight in a day of bad news.
Best Spouse Award to you!❤
I need to marry someone like you!!

I was sincerely hoping for Draught of Living Death: mostly because of that "bean should be crushed, not cut" that stuck in my mind so much that I think about it any time I crush juniper (or any other berry/seed) while cooking. Also I was curious about how you would have worked out that pale lilac colour.
Anyway, the all seem very interesting, all three above your average, I'd say.
Omg I'm actually addicted to Earl Grey.
Try Earl Grey tea and to that honey and cinnamon syrup with a 2:5 ratio (2 spoons of honey and 0.5 to 1 spoons of cinnamon syrup for one cup).
❤ I love Earl Grey teas. I love making drinks. Earl Grey is one of my gotos. I also love the immune system boosting teas. I drank tons of them during the COVID pandemic. I never got sick from COVID. ❤
❤ excellent❤
I recently had a Pearl Diver at a tiki bar. They kept the gardenia mix in a tub and used an ice cream topping ladle to dip it out. It was much easier to use than pouring it.
Won’t be long for this vid to get a million views.
Where'd I leave that Felix Felicis...
How To Drink omg xD
That Lockhart part had me actually laughing aloud.
Leave it to Greg during these dark and difficult times to turn on the light :)
I need to buy proper bar tools. You keep making drinks that would be great for my d&d game nights. Personally that amortentia sounds like perfection
He's literally sponsored by Barfly my dude. Usually a link in the description
I always assumed the pepperup potion was peppermint
Or straight Tabasco.
Or worse, both
Alexander Larkin @alexanderlarkin you’re thinking of the “Elixir to Induce Euphoria” Harry makes to try to persuade Slughorn to give up the memory before he ends up using Felix 🤓⚡️
(Reference is in chapter 22 in HBP)
@howtodrink should make that one in part 2 😜
Made sense to me too, since mint tends to do a good job of clearing the sinuses.
Yeah also assumed peppermint and chilli which works together
glad we're getting more mileage out of the Mardi Gras bowl
When you started talking about an earl grey spirit my wife and I were at the edge of our seats hoping you were going to use Corgi Spirits Earl Grey Gin. You should totally check them out, they are a local gin distillery in Jersey City that we fell in love with for their interesting spirits and their earl grey gin makes a mean hot toddie.
“Alright class, I will be showing you how to summon some spirits”
But Magos, what of the Machine Spirit?
I swear I thought I was the only person on Earth who's heard of Italicus. I've only ever been able to get it at a speakeasy in my city.
Its expensive as hell!!! I need to buy it soon
It always catches my eye when I see it at my local liquor store but I've never heard of any actual use for it until now.
I'm italian and i had never even known about its existence!
I somehow just realized you have been wearing an apron.....I have watched a ton of these and though you were always in Overalls....Lol. Great Episode!
My life is a lie
Big nerd energy, big tweed energy, big musical energy. After that Harry Potter rant I think you could pull of a Snape cloak
With the right teacher, I probably would have loved to learn potions! Guess I'll start with the cocktails.
Oh, and I assumed that Slughorn's Felix Felicis was something he had stored in for himself, as he was on the run from Deatheaters before being hired, and was afraid for his life. But, he knew he couldn't just keep drinking the stuff, so he kept it in case of emergency, and was ready to drink it at a moment's notice.
(Say it all together, everyone:
BIG. NERD. ENERGY!)
i always thought pepper-up potion would be peppermint flavoured. I think a hot peppermint drink would have been soothing for a cold.
Hot peppermint tea is a classic help you go to sleep and drink but it's also very soothing when you have a cold. And is considered the traditional remedy for cold and allergies in European traditional medicine
Totally agree
Hermione: *holds arm up*
This is the episode I've been waiting for. Yes!! Go greg!
Definitely more Harry Potter drinks. Bring them on!
"Sounds like a hot toddy"
WTF people don't fall asleep immediately after drinking a hot toddy!?
Never.
Always.
Sometimes.
Hypnotiq doesn't have luster. Don't ask me why I'm so familiar with Hypnotiq.
Viniq does have luster. There are (were?) several flavors/colors available.
I came here to find this Comment. You are absolutely right!
Viniq needs carbonated water or sparkling wine to keep it agitated also.
Or, a fairly heavy dose of syrup to keep it suspended longer.
You need to do Animal Crossing's "Vacation Juice"! 🍹The new game just came out, so you'll get a lot of 👀👀👀 ✨
Whoooooooo nerddddddyyy drinks!!!!
I'm a practicing witch, and Rosemary actually is used in witchcraft for personal empowerment lol. Good job picking it for the felix felicis.
Watching and learning from your channel just got me my first interview as a bartender. Thank you so damn much.
That bergamot bottle has me craving some bioshock drinks!
One of my favorite non-alcoholic drinks is a London Fog, consisting of Earl Gray tea steeped in a 50/50 blend of water and half-an-half that has been steamed, vanilla , and honey. I've been trying to make an alcohol based version of this drink for a while which is where I discovered Italicus, but I haven't been able to get it right. Would you happen to have any suggestions? (I must admit, I've only ever had bad experiences with gin, so I never thought to have that as my liquor base.)
Wife "Hey, thats not my scent!"
The background is literally the most cozy thing ever
I appreciate that in light of everything that's going on right now, at the very least we can unwind with a cozy drink.
Cheers.
Missed a Boggart reference opportunity with those bitters 😂❤
This is perfect for a Harry Potter marathon while I'm staying at home! Love the tweed!
Never once thought to make a gin toddy. Never thought my inspiration to make a gin toddy would be a harry potter themed video. These all look fantastic though. Will certainly give it a try
Definitely do more Harry Potter drinks! Love this!
The overalls tweed coat combination is a powerful look
It's not overalls my dude it's an apron because he spills so much.
Ooh I really want to try the Felix Felicis. I love rosemary in cocktails, I made a recipe for a cocktail competition called the Ruby Rose with fresh ruby red grapefruit and a honey rosemary syrup. :)
Recipe if anyone is curious. :)
Honey Simple Syrup
1/3 c honey
1/3 c water
1/8 tsp cinnamon
3 inch long sprig rosemary
Simmer together until reduced. Store syrup in glass jar.
For drink:
2 oz fresh red grapefruit juice
2 oz vodka
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
1/4 oz honey simple syrup
1 1/4 inch sprig fresh rosemary garnish
Shaken with ice and strained into martini glass.
For liquid luck, using a heavy dark honey as the main body might have better lent to the molten gold desired effect, sweetening the entire drink while making it smooth, tangy, and pouring with a molten metal quality and luster
I find it deeply weird that someone as media-critical and seemingly progressive as Greg has two Harry Potter episodes in his library...and that there don't seem to be critical reactions in the comments. I won't *assume* critical comments are being deleted/filtered here, but...seemingly nothing.
This was two years ago, but I just watched the *year-old* episode talking about pre-code movies and how much damage problematic media has done -- so it's not like we're "separating art from the artist" here...
Over 120 likes in less than 7min. Impressive...

How about gigglewater from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?
@13:53 "NOT ECPLICITLY"
Bravo sir! Needed this today!
Nothing like potions when you're stuck inside
Greg, love the Harry Potter videos. BUT... we need a Lord of the Rings episode of themed drinks! That would be amazing
When the outbreak is over, ill be making date, dogwood and medlar liqueurs..
I need a Letterkenny inspired video so bad, both for the drink and the opportunity for spectacular character impersonations lol
It is a bit disappointing that there's no pepper in Pepperup Potion
You could literally just pour some italicus liqueur into a cup of hot chai tea. Most kinds of chai tea have black pepper in them. Which would be consistent with the books because Britain had the British Empire and the big influences from India
As for a viewer's alternative approach to the pepperup potion...
One cup of water (boiling)
One bag of black tea or Earl Gray
Juice of one whole lemon
Couple dashes of ground ginger powder (or fresh ginger root if preferred)
One to two whole shots of bourbon or spirit(s) available.(depending on the mug or potency preference)
Honey to taste
One lemon wheel to garnish... and enjoy with your favorite Harry Potter book or movie, or even party if you're that into the lifestyle.
the only potions i want to see are from runescape along side the drinks they serve at tree gnome village
runescape drinks please !!!!!!!!!
You could have just called the gardenia mix Lavender Brown.
The Amortentia looks like a bottle of "love" alright....

POTION SELLER. GIVE ME YOUR STRONGEST POTION.
In the book it does say what the love potion reminds her of. After that, slughorn finds out that she’s muggle born. Trust me I know everything about the Harry Potter books.
When reading the book I always thought it was spicy like peppermint tea.
We all know that movie felix felicis was just cocaine.
Would something like scrappy's firewater tincture work to add a bit of 'pepper' to the gin Toddy? I'll definitely be trying that one out when I get the opportunity
For potion inspiration you could also look at the board game Potion Explosion which seems to borrow theme Heavily from Harry Potter. The descriptions of the potion ingredients though are hilarious
Dude, make the "Quarantini" but you know, Greg's way.
This is awesome, and I love the nerdy sidetrack about Slughorn's timeline of potionmaking. 10/10 video
Ha, funny thing: for me the Pepperup Potion was always something similar to Polish "pieprzówka" - a very basic liqueur consisting of vodka and black pepper, traditionally used as a cold medicine.
Based on his behavior at the Battle of Hogwarts, I’m positive Horace always has some liquid luck on hand with a spare in his trunk!
Okay, what if @LifeofBoris meets @HowToDrink?... lots of vodka and Kvass will be involved.
I don't drink, but I adore watching these. When I did drink, my favorite was a Ramos gin fizz. It tastes so much like lemon sorbet. Thank you for your time and your work!
Two things about Pepperup...I bet you could work some aromatic magic by pairing gin and a hint of peppercorns (so many types to choose from!) either ground or steeped. Also, this drink is crying out for caffeine, possibly even in powdered form, maybe even a little of that caffeinated aspirin, crushed fine.
I knew the time frame issue and I always just assumed this dude just made liquid luck. Don’t forget Slughorn was always trying to find ways to make a buck and since he was one of the few people with the skill to make it why wouldn’t he just be brewing as much as possible all the time.
How the fuck did you make the gardenia mix that lotiony. It just separates when I make it
Amortentia probably smells like to me gasoline baked goods cilantro lavender.
Or just cilantro.
The only thing I thought of with the pepper up potion was some kind of bright mint, with a touch of spicy. Thinking of something that makes you feel better and the spicy notes causing the steam from your ears. 8)
I’m surprised there was no Ginger in the Ron Weasley flavoured potion
I think you meant Viniq. That’s the shimmering liquor
Should’ve done polyjuice potion
That Earl Grey Hot Toddy sounds like just about the best thing to drink I can think of for all hot-drink occasions.
I can't get past the fact that this man is wearing overalls, a plaid, button up shirt that is partially unbuttoned, and a suit jacket.
I HAVE to make that pepper up potion for my boyfriend next time he's sick. He'll love it.
Man I'm not even of age to drink liquor, but I still watch these for some reason...
Next time, consider persimmon for that bitter flavor. I think it'll keep the drink cleaner on the palate.
These were awesome! I always thought the Pepperup Potion was a peppermint tea based drink, been trying to experiment with that in mind. I never thought of a hot toddy type drink but it makes more sense considering what it is used for.
Intro is always the best😂😂👍
BUT WHERE IS THE TWEED JACKET FROM?
