    Irishman here. Loved this. Very fair, very accurate. I don't know where Ireland go from here. It generally is the 'monster' sides that we have trouble with, the South Africas, the French and the English. The La Rochelles in the club games. And of course the All Blacks for a different reason. Ireland has come a long way. We are regularly getting wins over these teams, but NOT when it's the crunch game that makes history. We have been so close though, all one score losses. We just have to find that little bit extra. And if some idiot comes on and says that we are 'chokers'! Choking is NOT turning up and these Irish sides HAVE turned up, but just can't quite get it over the line.
    I do worry that this might happen to Leinster again this year, as the Irish side looked a bit tired the last two matches, and there's still a lot of rugby to go in the season. And I do fear that the Irish lads could be out of fuel altogether by the time we go to South Africa.
    I hope that I am wrong, but I have a gut feeling that things could go belly up!!

    Been waiting for these guys to get together again and speak about that game after their comments before the game. Great talk as usual with some really good points as usual. Just one comment i think is interesting when they were talking about did they win because of emotion. Personally as an England fan who watch all their games, with the new defence coach Felix Jones and attack coach Richard Wigglesworth, i feel like they are starting to play differently to last year and differently from the world cup.
    They are defiantly playing more ball in hand and trying to get the wingers more involved. Ireland kicked more than England which a few months ago before new coaches would never of happened, England would've out kicked Ireland probably by more than double. Another showing of how much England looked to carry and keep the ball rather than kicking was the carries and metres made, England had 30 more carries with almost 400 metres more carried and almost 300 metres gained. They tried doing the same to Scotland, problem was in this ireland game England had 7 handling errors and in the Scotland game it was over 20, that's why it looked so rough. This game was executed way better.
    The new coaches did say it would take around 15 test matches after the world cup to full implement their coaching. As an England fan i'd never get carried away with this win and i still think Ireland deserve to win the 6 Nations and are still a class above England, i just think England are on a good path right now and i hope it continues with this brand of rugby.

    The games that Ireland have lost in recent times have been at the hands of teams that elevated their performances to some of their best in years, take England and New Zealand. So I think for Ireland, they are improving and racking up the wins but perhaps unluckily falling short in the big games not solely because of underperforming but largely because the team they have faced has elevated their game on the day and its been enough to beat Ireland.
    Its important to remember that this is a recent phenomenon in Irish rugby. You don't have to go back too long to see Ireland getting hammered by New Zealand in the quarterfinal in 2019. Last two losses have been by 5 points combined, so these haven't been blow out embarrassments, I think that's where you can see the development of this Irish team. We're certainly not there yet and have a long way to go but the improvements are noticeable.

    • @Zion66666
      @Zion66666 2 місяці тому

      That may be true, but this Irish team have developed a habit of losing the biggest games. Will be interesting to see if the team can overcome this mental defect. Or if becomes even more entrenched.

    • @016249452

      I'm not sure if twice can be considered a habit. This Irish team has its own legacy and has lost one very big game to an incredible NZ performance and one big game to an incredible England performance so I think its a bit more complicated. Credit has to be given to the teams Ireland have faced.
      I think its easy to get lost in history and see all the quarterfinal losses and paint it as a habit but each team is different. @@Zion66666

    • @franko2053

      Brilliant question as a South African, Ireland have the best national rugby system currently however they don't produce the world class talent year in year out so they will always be a good team and sometimes be a great team. The big difference for them in the modern game is fate or luck they can't will a game by force to be theirs and that is something that they need to work on.
      So if you study sport this is a common problem that top level athletes face in that it is easy to be one of the top three but to beat the best or no 1 at will is much harder. A big thing Ireland and New Zealand must sacrifice to be number one is style or "pretty rugby" you have to be able to grind out games. One thing that has made Warren Gatland great with Wales was that he didn't always had the best team and that they weren't always well prepared but they had fight and heart.
      Ireland weren't out coached or out played against England. England wanted it more.
      Another problem with Ireland is that their players are over coached from ground up. They don't think on their feet like the Aussies or rely on skill like the All Blacks to the death. They rely on a game plan and the team but to be the best you have to have at least 5 - 7 world class players in your team so that 1 or 2 can be brilliant on that day. When you over coach a team you take that brilliance away from them.
      What Ireland need to do is to build a bigger younger squad based on confidence rather than experience through their 4 year rwc cycle that way at the beginning of the rugby world cup they can select the best in form team, because they will have enough battle hardened experience and are hungry enough for the win.
      So basically if Andy Farrell go with experience this year in the June series against the Springboks they are already behind on winning the next world cup. He needs to pirck a young group that will learn from the South Africa series, to take that into the next world cup. He instead will be taking a too experience squad trying to achieve a historic result, that might be admirable yet still futile you are playing the 4 times World Cup Champions in SA at Loftus on day 1.

    • @101MIGHTYJOE
      @101MIGHTYJOE 2 місяці тому

      @franko2053 wow man, wasn't expecting such an insightful answer so thanks. From my perspective, i totally agree that ire needs to be brave on the tour to SA and give a few young guys a start. However because we have had such limited success (Wales, franch and England all have better 6 nations and world cup records than us as dont even mention our summer tour records) it's very hard for us to take big gambles on selection rather than being conservative and increasing our chance of pulling of a series win.
      Because we have a small player base (which we are doing an excellent job in maximising) we have always tended to struggle to have depth in every position. We are getting better re our squad depth as the sport is becoming more popular and the other teams aside from leinster are also improving their underage pathways, however i dont see a day where we have the same quality and quantity that SA, AB or france have. Also a nation we don't really produce big guys (in particular front row) so that limits our options.
      I always think that the team with the best squad will win the world cup. Ireland could do everything right but one or two injuries and we are fecked where as SA,ABand france will have guys of the same standard to replace the injured players.

      I also meant to say that ur also spot on re the type of players ireland select in order to fit our game plan. If u look at our backs, aside from keenan we don't have players who have amazing speed and beat a guy on the outside or can conjure up a moment of individual brilliance to turn a game like kolbe.

    • @Zion66666
      @Zion66666 2 місяці тому +1

      @@franko2053 you hit the nail on the head. Ireland will go into the South African series, treating it as something that they absolutely have to win, whereas the springboks will be using it to blood players for the next 2 to 3 years. I loss for South Africa won’t mean as much as a loss for Ireland.
      That said, your point about the first test being at Loftus. Loftus is the hardest place for any international team to come and beat South Africa.

    • @franko2053
      @franko2053 2 місяці тому

      @@101MIGHTYJOE I think winning rwc cups comes a lot down to luck. But as they say you make your own luck. Ireland will need to recruit a new generation of project players to strengthen their squad for the next rwc. I can't see Bundee Aki making it to the next one. And what they can do is take the URC games against SA teams much more seriously. If i was the Irish coaches I would focus less on phase play and momentum, instead get all the franchise teams battle hardened and set a bigger focus on counter attack. Ireland should be imitating the 1999 rwc Wallabies at all times. That Gregan Wallabies team was street smart they could stay in game against physical teams and just score tries at a whim's notice. I would say Ireland would stand a chance to win a world cup when Munster can win the Heineken cup back to back.

  • @geoffnelson6756
    @geoffnelson6756 2 місяці тому

    Very astute comments and fully agree that there is a pattern in the big losses with Ireland, if a team come out with superior emotion and intent, Ireland become inhibited, they don't panic and often find their way back into games without really hitting their potential, SA v England at the WC was similar to Saturday with both SA and Ireland edging in front with a few minutes left, SA stop England, Ireland kick possession away and defend poorly, they just freeze a little when things get tight.

  • @danxc1981
    @danxc1981 2 місяці тому +1

    Good to hear these perspectives. However, a difference of 6 points in total over two matches (NZ in World Cup and recently against England) is the difference for Ireland between probably winning the Grand Slam, progressing to the semis in the World Cup (and probably the final), being on a 23 match winning streak or being considered as bottlers. Both NZ and England played really well in those matches and scraped through. The Boks who won the WC lost to Ireland i.e. even they have bad days at the office. Rather than condemning the whole team, I think a few players made a few errors or bad decisions on the day and while normally those setbacks can be overcome in a match against England they didn't manage to do that. It's not doom and gloom but yes, still plenty to improve.

      This sort of thing happens all the time, it happened with England in the 2019 RWC, I think it was Dawson or an ex player commented that England would win the RWC and it was presented as a quote from the England camp despite them being on a media ban.
      No team is going to announce they are the world’s best or predict a win, it comes from fans. The notion that a team press office would release a comment like that is ridiculous. Anyone that believes these sorts of comments are either gullible or stupid

    Historic NZ series win last year. Grand slam last year. Probably going to win the 6nations again this year. Beat South Africa at the World Cup. And countless other big victories in the last 5-7 years. This Ireland team isn’t perfect but by god they are building nicely for the next couple of years and into the future and the world knows it. They have easily been the most entertaining team to watch for probably the last 4 years now. Rugby is Irelands 4th most popular sport. With a small registered rugby player population pool compare to countries like South Africa, France & England. South Africa in particularly with 60+ million people and rugby being their number 1 sport. Likewise with NZ. It’s only a matter of time before things start to really click for Ireland in the near future especially with the amount of strength in depth they are now producing and world class coaches too. Irelands a tough nation and always has been. We are called the fighting Irish for a reason. Odds have always been stacked against us but we are now a team and country that doesn’t back down to anyone. It might not be our time now but the future is extremely bright. That goes for our clubs too.

      @@gerardkelsh1011 Only you know what you're trying to say. Intelligent people know that the rankings are nothing but an extremely silly game with no merit or effect whatsoever. And, of course, always utterly outdated and skewed. The Boks, for example, will not play a single game for EIGHT months since winning RWC in October. That would leave the so-called rankings hilariously outdated by at least EIGHT months. ALL that counts in modern day rugby mate is a team's performance at Rugby World Cup, when all teams play on a level playing field, at the same venue, at the same time and with the best teams they could have assembled over four years since the previous RWC. And on that score we all know the Boks' record ... and that of Ireland. There is NO comparison whatsoever. So please, be my guest: enjoy the rankings.

      @@gerardkelsh1011 In this day and age rankings between RWC tournaments are complete hogwash nonsense. South Africa in particular, care less about their ranking between RWCs because they use every single test in between as an opportunity to blood new players and experiment with combinations and game plans. Rassie has said so on many occasions and said only a few days ago that many new players will be blooded for the test against Wales at Twickenham in June. Does it mean the current coaches don't want to win those matches? Of course they do, but they certainly don't see losses as train smashes when blooding new players or trying out new combinations or game plans. The test the Boks lost against Wales in 2022 was a perfect example. We smashed them in the first test and then made 20 (that's TWENTY!) changes to the 23 that took them on in the second test. It was basically a Bok B team that took to the field that day. Does that sound to you like a team who cares about rankings? Perhaps the Irish should follow the Boks' lead. It has, after all, led to the Boks having an incredible record at RWC (50% win ration as against the ABs 30%) and re-established the Boks as rugby's greatest force ever.

  • @loughrey101
    @loughrey101 2 місяці тому +3

    I think that assessment of is both unfair and untrue. Ireland have won a lot of trophies over the last few years. They're thr current Grand Slam champions and did it against France last year when France were as their best, which was arguably a more important game than the England game as they pretty much already had the Six Nations title in the bag before the English game so it's hard to say that this was a big game as it was not a need to win game. It was just like any other Six Nations game. The French game was the big game that decided the title and they did it in Frence, but by the time of the English game, they had done enough to pretty much secure the title, so the English game can hardly be defined as a big game like the QF game. It was not a knockout game or a game that decided the tournament. If that had won the game theft would have secured the title with a match to spare but they already had the title as the only way they can list the title is if Scotland wins abf denies them a bonus point and England beats France by a bonus point, which means it would need trash unlikely scanarios to knock them, not just a defeat to Scotland.
    The QF is generally the only big games they struggle with, outside of the WC they've been very successful at adding to their trophy cabinet.
    The way these guys are talking you'd think they can't win any titles. They are the Grand Slam champions and winning back-to-back Grand Slams has never been done in thr Six Nations era, so it's hardly a poor reflection on them they couldn't do what no team has done. They will be back-to-back Six Nations champions and that in itself is something that has only happened about twice in the Six Nations era. This has only been their second defeat since winning the NZ series in 2022 and those two defeats were by very small margins. Every team in history has lost games but no team only Ireland has only lost 2 games in two years since Richie McCaw's 2015 winning All Blacks. Ireland deserve more credit than that. If SA goes and loses to Argentina or Australia in the Rugby Championship this year I doubt we'll hear these criticising then that the only trophy they can win is the WC but lose every other tournament so can't be considered as great as NZ who can also win trophies between WCs. I think there's a lot of subtle anti-Irish Saffa bias in these pundits.
    The criticism of Ireland's failure in WCs is a fair one and it's factual but to say they struggle in big games in general and have an empty trophy cabinet as a result is simply factually untrue. That wouldn't be the only team in the professional era to win a NZ series or be current Grand Slam champions with only two defeats in 2 years if they can't win the big games. They can't win WC knockout games, that's their only obstacle, but they've been very successful with everything else.

Like Ireland in the WC and Leinster in the URC. Doesn't mean they haven't won plenty of trophies. Doesn't mean they are chokers. Does mean that opposing teams will try to exploit it. England are not nearly as well drilled, but they did have a mental edge over them in this game. Ireland were over confident, some Irish pundits downright arrogant and they paid for it.
