Well, I wasn’t expecting this from Sparrows! A cool screw in cylinder holder and carry case all in one! 😃 let me know what you think of this in the comments 👍🔐😃
Yeah, I usually really like Sparrows products, I just can't get behind what amounts to a hollowed out flash light for $25. Not to mention the percentage of locks that will actually screw into it is rather small, at least in the US. I did however acquire a monkey's paw pick and absolutely love it!!
Yup I ordered one. And then accidentally ordered a second one. Doh Now waiting for delivery so I can make an RMA, get my money back from Sparrows, and still enjoy taking it dry from the delivery company. Thx brain, you did it again!!! Have some more whiskey and stfu... As for the Sceptre of Picking +3, it is pretty alright. Definitely feels like the beginning of a LightSaber. Here are some points I have noticed: -This unit has a very solid metal feel. It is reasonably heavy and does not feel like Aluminum or any of the light alloys. -lots of room for picks, tensioners, & extras, and the chamber is lined with rubber so it is reasonably quiet. -Mortice locks do not seem to screw in fully, at least not Sargent Assa Abloy. There is a plug inside but I wasn't able to move it. -practice locks such as the Ultimate Adversary have grub screws which protrude above the thread plane and therefore must not be used w/o modification. -The knurling is quite pronounced and feels like gripping a metal file, perhaps even more so. If you know how to smooth this it would help. -The screw cap on the pick chamber has very fine threads. It takes a lot of turns to open or close the cap. -overall the threads are very fine and well machined. They are precise and need to be handled carefully to prevent cross threading. -with that much chamber area I would have liked to see a glow ring at the lock end to illuminate the pick area of the lock for nighttime relaxation or at the back of the mortice for internal illumination. -To tighten your tension if it slips do not move your tension hand but rather reach over with your pick hand and rotate the Sceptre while slightly releasing grip in the tension hand. Very stable. -Nobody will stop you from incessantly picking the lock if you have a bat of steel in your hand. So BadAss :D
Helpful hint. Use a Dremel to cut the tab on the back of the lock. You get much more rotation and satisfaction at an open! I love the sector! I totally recommend it!
I like where you are going with the follower and extra pins. Slipping in a gutting set is a really good idea. Your home made follower set would be great for this with its space saving Russian doll style design. Tweezers, shims and maybe a tiny thin rubber pinning tray. Sparrows could come out with a Gutting Survival kit that's an add on for this. I watched Legal Lock Picker review this and I thought it was ok, now I am liking it a whole lot more. Great review as always.
I have it!, it was my Christmas gift from my wife.!It arrived from Sparrows Canada to Romania in four days! I loaded with chess pins now. Great review!, now I've got Monith and Abona design by Lock Noob!, incredible tools!
I bought this along with the monkey paw pick. Glad it fits. lol. I am going to my families cottage in a few weeks and will be taking them both with me. Nice video as always. Thank you for sharing.
That looks really handy! If they sold that minus the mortise cylinder portion, that would make a fantastic and TOUGH small case to keep loose picks in. Alternatively, if they made them with the mortise cylinder holder as a sleeved adapter where the body of the cylinder was threaded, one could connect two of them, one end for picks and one for a stiff foam insert with tensioners stuck in it.
Those grub screws are useful for securing some longer locks in there. I got a De Guard high security lock that binds against the back if i try to screw it in all the way so i undo it a few turns and use the screws to keep it in place
Nice product . Superb machining. Only threaded commercial cylinders will work and none of mine screw all the way in . Holds lots of stuff Wish it separated into multiple pieces. A lock end that was operated by the cylinder would be nice. Also the thumb screws were placed in the thinnest part of the thing and should be located in a section with thicker metal . Good start , needs more to be all that .
Yeah, interesting.. I don't have many screw in cylinders really but I like the idea of a solid tube for carrying picks to stop them being crushed when travelling etc.
Cold wet day here to but made better with some LN catchup /binge, interesting product, would be good to have one for euro cylinders etc, have a good weekend
I like that it is so compact and a decent price - would save lugging a vise on my travels! Thanks for the review - will definitely pick one of these up in due course. BTW - next episode on Fishpicks will be a review of the Abona/Monith rakes 😉
Does the ultimate adversary training lock fit into this? A repinnable thing with a small box of pins in the main compartment would be phenomenal for travel!
Disappointed every other comment wasn't, "Is that a Sceptre in your pocket or are you just glad to see me." I think the price is good and I can see many people liking this, but I prefer to carry a couple of Tuxedo cases with tools. I can mostly see the Scepre for someone who travels for work (is that still a thing?) and wants to carry a practice lock in front and repinning kit in the rear to practice progressively more difficult pinnings.
Glad you reviewed this. I saw this on another channel and I thought it was a joke video! I'm glad you cleared up that misconception for me. Just a couple of questions though: on the end that the lock screws in to, it looks like it's in two parts that screw inside each other (that's why the knurls don't line up), and it also appears that there's a screw at the back inside to remove the whole assembly from the pick case. What's the purpose of these additions?
Speaking of modifications, if you were to mount a small motor in a mortice cylinder you might be able to produce an 'electro-pick' add on with extra bits in the butt of the Sceptre. Perhaps having the pick end in a Schlage key would make it easy to swap between bits. (Turn to lock key and switch on) Remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your locks but you should never pick your friends locks.
@@LockNoob I was hoping it would slide in and be fixed in place by the thumbscrews. Ah well, I guess I don't need every single item they offer... I think...
So could you cut down that piece on the back of the lock to make the cylinder turn all the way like a real lock or would that mess up the lock? Just wondering don't know very much bout locks or lock picking just getting started I've watched alot of your videos they are great I do have that plus the progressive locks reloader kit and tuxedo pick kit coming in the mail hopefully tomorrow. I'm loving this journey so Far. Thank you for all your info
I really do like the look of it, but when I received mine it felt more like a prototype. The body is just a little too sharp and while I doubt you can actually cut yourself with it, it is not as comfortable as it could be. The storage compartment could have been a couple of mm wider and that way the key would also fit. Not essential, but handy to have. It would also be good to be able to use other profiles of locks. All in all not a bad product, but with room to improve.
I just got mine in the mail but was disappointed that my ultimate adversary lock won't fit because the the grub screws. I looked for the practice locks from sparrows but can't find them on their site. Any suggestions?
I was thinking of how to word a comment like this that wouldn't draw attention from the alphabet bois! 😂 Glad to see I wasn't the only one thinking this!
Interesting. Do you know any cylinders which would fit and take a KIK? I'm thinking a metallic and threaded variant of the 3d printed holders, sort of like in video 413.
Here is an important point: If you are using a repinnable practice lock (I use the Ultimate Adversary) which uses grub screws to keep the goodies in the pin chamber then you must first ensure the grub screws do not protrude above the mortice threads or else you could damage the threads on the Sceptre. It occurs to me that one could forego the use of grub screws and instead use the Sceptre to hold everything in the lock. Simply pin up one chamber at a time while screwing the mortice into the Sceptre. And enjoy removing the mortice lock from the Sceptre because it's gonna be raining pins!
It looks nice, compact, and well made BUT I think I'll pass. The price is ok but it's kind of limited to a pick case & screw mortis lock holder. I have a very nice Mulipick case that keeps my picks in place so they don't "rattle" around and rub against each other. I also have a 3d printed hand held lock holder that lets me pick (or maybe I should say try to pick)- screw mortis, euro's, kik cylinders, and non rim mortises. The 3d prints can be bought on-line if you don't own a 3d printer (I don't). So though it's nice, it's limited.
Not think it's a little bit ironic that none of Sparrows practice locks would fit in it? Still think the little pack you made yourself is the route I would go down if I was putting together a practice kit.
This would be great with the CI practice lock or the other company that they copied it off of that they still make which is the same exact thing. I wish I would have known that before I bought CI’s because Id like to support the original and smaller companies.
As to the flashlight mod, I'd suggest replacing the end cap with some sort of low profile LED light, with the LR44 type batteries. That way you maintain more or less full functionality of the Sceptre 😊.
For those saying that mortise cylinders are hard to find in the US, CLK Supplies has a selection www.clksupplies.com/collections/1in-mortise-cylinders Back in 2010 Schlage introduced a mortise cylinder that took a modified KIK so I won't be too surprised if someone makes a screw in KIK holder for this. And SFIC, LFIC,....
not in the uk you can’t, going equipped is very much alive as a charge. It is very interesting to wonder if someone could use the admittedly very reasonable excuse of locksport, for why they were carrying them. It may be a test case for our sport in the UK 🇬🇧 🤣🤣💪💪♥️♥️♥️
You could mod this to look and work like a flashlight, so you can hide your picks there, in case you are traveling through a place where owning them is illegal PS. Not that I am telling you to do something illegal. Just listen to Bill
Yeah, it’s not really for me. Probably is a better sell as a really robust case if you’re having to chuck your picks in a suitcase. You could probably just grab a tin instead mind.
Well, I wasn’t expecting this from Sparrows! A cool screw in cylinder holder and carry case all in one! 😃 let me know what you think of this in the comments 👍🔐😃
I wonder what taking this through Heathrow airport is like
Fantastic idea, easy to sit and practice picking nearly anywhere you want.
it would be really cool if they made it to fit there revolver too.
Great Idea. I mostly pick mortise cylinders. This would be a great addition to my travel kit
I just bought one of these, now for some fun.
Surprised they didn't have a screw in adapter for: Key in Knob/Key in Lever cylinders... And yes, a flashlight mod!

I bought the monkey paw as soon as you released your first video on it, its gotta be one of my favorite picks! Awesome job with it!

I hate to be negative, I love a nicely made bit of kit as much as anyone, but this strikes me as a solution looking for a problem.

Also useful for breaking windows ;)
BTW, dummy mortice lock blanks are about £5 so just drill a hole in the front of one and glue a mini torch inside.

I don't think it does from what others have said
how diffucult would it be to drill out holes and tap them on the top of that lock that provided?

will the 7 Pin Ultimate Adversary Practice Lock fit in the holder ?
Possibly - I don't have one to measure though

Not that I know of yet - Sparrows do ship though

They’re made of a fairly stiff rubber so I don’t think so. I mean they will bend, but not roll without damaging them.
@@adamwest8711 A small piece of corrugated cardboard would be a better option methinks!

I am with John Rich below. I love Sparrows products, but I would rather carry a standard Tuxedo kit and a couple of LOTO locks than that bulky thing.
Looks well made, and a very nice price. But it's hand held, designed for travel, and only fits the heaviest style cylinder. It's cool, but...
Even a non functional flashlight head that goes over the lock would be great.
