It's a nice set, a bit more than a standard "starter" set but bare bones enough to keep the price down. one question i had though was how big are the two pick pouches in the left hand side? they look like a Covert Companion might fit but i can't quite tell

I purchased this kit a few years ago, I added more jigglers, a traveller hook and warded lock keys. Has helped me out loads of times as a firefighter. Good review. Will take your advice and add a couple more tools I think. Keep up the good work.
This looks like a stealth breaching kit for military or law enforcement. I have a friend who was in the first recon U.S. Marines back in the 90’s and he said one of the funnest classes he had was the lock picking class. It was a lot more fun than the regular ‘blow stuff up’ breaching that he did in his service. The kit has molle’ loops for vest attachment. Sparrows we’re my first real deal picks. Love the fit and finish and the customer service is exemplary.
This is awesome. I have been a fan of Sparrows Lock Picks since day one. They are always innovating and they listen to professionals and the community of lock junkies like myself. It's hard to make a "KIT" that everyone would agree on but this is nice. Plus it looks like there's room to add a few things. Thanks for showing it off.

I love the kit but I did notice it lacked a a few tools I would carry I ended up buying just the case and customized my kit and added my choice of picks from Sparrows and and a few other tools like my bump key set. I found that it's a perfect kit that I now carry as a first responder. Just want to say thank you for your videos Lock Noob 👍
This is my vehicle/work kit, at least with some modifications/additions. I’ve stopped out the picks from the Ranger kit for the Dark Shift Set and added a few more from Southard and Law Locktools as well as swopping out the knife with a Peterson knife and adding their decoder. Adding a set of jiggler a and warded picks along with a traveler hook and shimming material as well as hinge pin poppers makes this an excellent bypass and pick kit. There are also quite a few tension tools thrown in as they’re about as important as the picks. As a LEO this is always with me as the large defeat bag simply isn’t carried everyday. While I don’t carry this on my person it’s always close at hand. I have rarely found locks in the US where this setup can’t quite easily get past and the big benefit to law enforcement picking is entry is always assured it’s just a matter of time and level of tooling brought to bear. While I’ve been trained for picking and bypassing at work it’s focused much more on work around and bypassing than SPP with raking being king and another option typically being used before SPP. I like getting into locksport as frankly it has expanded my skills and to me at least is more fun as it becomes me vs. the lock rather than the lock being somewhat immaterial to the goal of entry or search. Most of the issues gear comes from Southard and Peterson as both are quite good with offering LE discounts and being in NY Peterson is a local company. Anything I have that’s Sparrows is a personal purchase and simply because it is nicer, more efficient, or for me provides a benefit otherwise I wouldn’t waste my money on it; the Ranger set is definitely a cost worth the $.

@@Hinru13: No creds needed; UA-cam actually has been more informative to me than quite a bit of in person trainings. Red team tools offers some decent trainings. In my state our state department of criminal justice services puts out training catalogs and that’s were you’d see things though we h e some interdepartmental networks as some departments do some unique trainings from time to time. You can buy about anything once you know it exists but you can also make things; one of the quickest tools for entry I use on the regular is a cut down carpenter square as it’s quite quick at live latches. As far as vehicle lockouts I’ve used both a big and little EZ tool though in a pinch I’ve made one out of a 1 piece black powder cleaning rod when I didn’t have anything with me. Departments around me have all stopped lockout service aid but have left it to officers if they wanted to do it themselves and a few have. Like anything else the biggest thing you can do is practice either through practice locks or your own or friends homes just be careful when you start picking with locks in use as it is possible to rake pins enough to change their bitting so the normal key no longer works or to damage an mister all you’re unaware of. Another resource most LEOs wouldn’t think of and one some wouldn’t use but a good one none the less is area fire training as most FDs offer quick entry training and in my experience they focus exclusively or near exclusively in bypasses and quick entry techniques though they have zero focus on covert techniques as speed is key with the FD.
The one pick that the name escaped you is an Offset Hybrid. I love it for smaller Yale keyways, personally. As for Sparrows in general, I love their steel, but I really wish they would get rid of their built-in weak point in their pick profiles. That sharp taper point on the bottom of their picks is where literally every Sparrows pick that I've ever broken has snapped. Yeah, I know, breaking picks is normal, but when every single one from one company with a similar design element breaks at the same position, it's probably not you; it's probably the design. That's why I love your design for the Monkey Paw, it both works great, and it lacks the sharp taper point common to in-house designed Sparrows picks.

Awesome Case on the ranger, you can get the case from sparrows, I have 2, one is for my padlock shims, gigglers, core shims, gallium tube, extra picks, lock lube and rubber gloves. The other one is for a small tool kit. Very much recommended, as well as the creeper case.
Hey Noob. Well, it's a nice starter kit and much cheaper than buying them individually. The case looks awesome/ they should sell the case as a stand alone, as they don't really have an EDC case. You can always feel the quality of anything Sparrows manufactures, which is why I only buy from them. The 'jigglers' you're referring to are called the Chicago set. They've been around a long time. You can reverse each tool when inserting and they are generally regarded as the most common profiles used in wafer locks. They work- I've used them, but I find just using a wrench and either a worm or a city will do the job just as well without having to shuffle through a bunch of different tools. The variety of picks is decent. They could probably chuck the offset hybrid, which is that diamond tip one. Most locks now you must have something that can set deep. The Lunatic is my fav= I own 5= and the Tron is a close second, they should be included. Also, my first kit had no handles and I would replenish them that way, but after awhile I decided to start getting them dipped. I imagine they'd be very comfortable with long picking sessions but they do dampen the feedback. Just 2 weeks ago= I cut all the handles off. I like them much better without, not to mention my case went from being stuffed= to having plenty of room. I probably won't buy ANY pick with Any handle again, I've noticed how much my success has improved since removing them. The knife I do not own. I know there are locks vulnerable to pawl manipulation, but most of the cheapest locks people buy in America= it will not work on. The quick jim, meh. It's just a little too small to be useful. If you're looking for a latch tripper I'd rather use their Flexpass. I've had mine for about 4 years and it's probably the oldest thing I own by them. It works and I use it every day to slip a latch from a stairwell I hang out in in the morning when I'm going to my other spot. BUT= nothing beats a Travelers hook. Sometimes you need something that can focus a lot of power to move a latch and the flex just can't do that, so I'd just have the TH they sell. Shims. I owned them. I didn't use them much even though I live in a U w/ hundreds of 1500's all over the place, mainly, because I don't have any need to get into a locker. I think if you're going to use them to steal stuff= a must have. But if you're doing it for EDC or even locksport, you'll get bored after a few shims and the novelty wears off. Also, if the sit around for over a year- the coating will start to separate from the metal. Even for a general kit- I probably wouldn't include it. Their wrench's are ok. I never use the twists/ long handled/ or Z's, just the 3 normal ones. I wished they would come out with a more comprehensive set that had different widths if the heads/ different lengths of the heads/ and different thicknesses. I only pick SFIC's, mostly, but there are tons of times where I wish I has like a tensioner that was slightly different from the 3 I have. Also, they should be making ergonomic TOK tensioners, IDK why the F@#k everyone sells them straight? The rest in the keyway good with those only when your lock is in a tilted vice. Using those when holding a lock in your hand or, worse yet, when it's attached to a door- good luck, they'll fall off repeatedly. Mad Bob used to make a bomb set but those are not available anymore and LPL just started producing a set, which I plan on buying, but his aren't curved, just bent, but it's still the only way to make them useable in most scenarios. So, in conclusion, I'd chuck the Chicago set/ knife/ jim/ and shims, add their short TH's or Flex pass or both/ Don't make the handles dipped/ I agree with you that I'd include the decoder (Doubles really well as a toothpick if you have some shit in your teeth,
I love this kit, I picked it up about 2-3 years ago. I added 4 things from sparrows to this kit. The master switch masterlock bypass, 2 euro picks (a medium and high) and the goat wrench cylinder lock turning tool.
I was looking at it a few days ago and I decided to hold off on it cuz I didn’t find a review about it really and then you go about making one lol 😂 looks like I might have to pick it up now
I have this kit a while in retrospect I would switch out the jigglers for longer ones and the shims take up a lot of space, but as a basic starter edc I like it. Plenty of space left to customize.
This is a great design. I bought the pouch a couple of years ago and filled it with my own gear. The only thing I don’t like about it is, when attached to a belt, the snaps don’t hold very well. I constantly have to reach down and make sure the whole rig is still in place.
In addition to excellent picks, Sparrows cases are top notch. I don't have the Ranger, but I bought the (I believe) Monstrum case to house a bunch of my stuff, including pinning tweezers, a plug follower, and a small cylinder holder. I've had it for years, ever since the first year the Monstrum was made available, and it has not been babied. It still looks almost brand new, and there are zero issues with the stitching, the fabric, or the zipper.
Great video as always. That was an offset hybrid not the low HD. The low HD is only available in the monstrum kit or as a single pick. Anytime you see a pick like that in a set it is the offset hybrid.
Very cool. They put some thought into holder and bag design. I work commercial building maintenance and work on locks frequently. The small, organized kit is very nice
You read my mind. I thought that it's missing a deep hook and the deciding tool. It's a nice kit full of good stuff albeit the case seems a little bulky. Then again if you are going to pack it out, it's a compromise worth having. Awesome review as always.
Nice bit of kit for relatively low security entry. I put together my EDC kit from two Sparrows Tuxedo cases, using the Sparrows picks without the very nice dipped handles that I like for practice picking. Actually, my favorite is the Sparrows picks with no handles, slipped into some ABS handles that I designed and 3D printed. My EDC kit is much smaller than the Ranger kit, but with more tools. The two thin flat pouches fit in the back of the large pocket of my tacticool pants with my cell phone in the outer portion of the pocket.
Good video. That was a lot of demos in a relatively fast time. I have always been a fan of sparrows, I like the quality of their products, I agree with their prices, plus I like their dipped handles. This set is going on my wish list, but I will personalize it, add another hook or maybe 2, and my favorite (offset snake) rake, exchange a couple of those wipers for a couple TOK wrenches, add a goat wrench or other tubelock tensioner, and add a decoder blade or exchange the bypass knife for one. I also think I'd only put about half of those shims in, and keep the rest at home and use the extra space for a few bump keys. That I think would make the perfect set for an emergency responder with limited skills, military, or just an EDC for a locksmith. I like the case (I like most sparrows cases) but since I wouldn't wear my set overtly, I'd pass on the belt pouch.
Thats a pretty well rounded kit. Add a deep hook, a notched decoder, an american lock bypass tool, couple petersen prybars, and maybe a traveler hook. if that kit wont get it just get the sledgehammer.

The attachment system with which it's compatible is known as MOLLE (MOdular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment), which is the system that the US military (or at least the Army) has been using for about the last 20 years.
This was my first serious pick set. Great kit. My one gripe was a lack of top of the keyway tensioning. They should ditch those stupid springy twisted wiper inserts and put a few of their knurled pry bars in there.

I’d love something similar that would hold my Revolver as well as my picks and bars. Also, attaching this to the exterior of my work bag would be and invitation for the police to stop and search me in London. It looks lovely for the correct use case though.
It’s not bad but the lack of top of the keyway turners seems like a big detractors but it seems no one includes them in entry to mid level kits just so you have to buy them separately. Also it would be nice to see manufacturers include more picks than rakes since you will use and abuse picks more than rakes overtime.
Again great video review of a great piece of kit but I would definitely up the bypass tools and drivers, I have some of the picks can be used with gloves on but think the heat wrap could do with being that wee bit more grippy. The case is good but molle need to be looked at and upgraded along with a bigger zip pull.
Great review as usual. Good kit, if a bit too bulky and "tacti-cool" for me. I agree with your suggestions - shim and probe - though I maybe wouldn't add the long hook. My experience is that if someone is a experienced enough picker to lift those really high blocked pins, they are also experienced enough to build their own custom kit. My revision would be to lose some redundant shims, and add a goat wrench, or better yet, add the comb bar set. It is amazing how many locks are vulnerable to combs. That comb bar set is ripe for review BTW, - just how well do those combi tools work?
The best part of that kit is its case. Also, I would happily omit the bypass knife if I could have, instead, a decoding tool for combination wheels. I do like the myriad of turning tools, but again, would eagerly forgo some of them in favor of top of the keyway ones.. especially the Sparrows "heavy bars" .040" & .050" Overall, it seems like a nice package that could use a couple minor upgrades. I don't think I would drop 72 USD for it, though.
I have been debating so long on the ranger kit. Which I love the case. The case is a big part of what I like this kid. I know I can get the case separate. The EOD kit is my second choice. I don't know which one to get. If money was no object i'd get him both. . I mean, I could get the EOD and buy the case separate. But I do wanna get one of the knifes. Wow, are you singing a different tune these days! You use to look down on bypassing. And yes I remember our conversations. The ranger kit is just a start, add in Bosnianbills prepper kit and Lock Picking Lawyer's Modem Rogue Bypass kit, and you will be close to my kit. Throw in a plused up Tuxedo kit and a EOD kit and you'll be there.
This is a great kit for first responders. I was surprised at the price, very reasonable. So inexpensive it would be easy to add some deep hooks and other tools as you suggest.
Thank you for your videos. Being a Newbi' When I say newbi I mean less then a month. The pick set that I purchased from a web site that I will not mention is "extremely" cheap. I figured that out just by picking up the first piece and the feel was POS even thou I have never used a lock pick before in my life. After reviewing your videos and other videos I am leaning towards Sparrows or Southord.. In my research I have heard people say Europe locks over American locks sets. Because of a tight budget I am looking for something under 50.00 US if it all possible. I live in America and I would like to get a set of picks that will work here in the states. Good basic kit overall IMO. Personally, I'd add some plastic latch shims to it (they'd fit easy in the main pouch if cut down to size) Maybe a few of the bypass tools that Sparrows also sells for some padlocks and Adams Rite locks, maybe their Eurodriver bypass tools, maybe a couple of dimple picks... Heck if you see them, maybe a lever lock turning tool and some pickwire... It all depends on what's popular where you're going to be using it.
Just got this and although the picks seems great. I don’t like the tension wrenches. They seem too thin and don’t come in varying thickness just widths.
Received yesterday, and tested it. To be honest, I'm a little bit disappointed. I get more good results with my Abona and Monith hooks than all this pouch... ;) :) :p For a serious beginner, I will suggest Multipick sets, or even an UK Souber Tools kit. Never mind, it extends my tools case. :)
Did you mention the picks' thickness? Unfortunately, the Sparrows site doesn't say. I'll assume it's 25 mils (most entry-level sets are thick for strength). I would definitely add a deeper hook and a monkey paw. And I might go with 20 mils instead of 25. (Why don't they have a thinner monkey paw?????)
Ok, but I need an honest answer. How is the quality of the material? Do the rakes/picks/shims break easily? are they flexible/bendy or hardened metal that survives twisting?
All 6 turning tools are the same thickness, only the width varies. This is not worthy of praise. The double sided wafer tools are nearly useless, as double sided wafer locks are rarely encountered.
Sparrows seems real hit and miss for me. Their coated rakes like their Bogota are fantastic. Their cases are also top notch. Their cool looking non coated handle rakes are mediocre and their turning tools are crap, especially their TOK turners.

Also, if the sit around for over a year- the coating will start to separate from the metal. Even for a general kit- I probably wouldn't include it. Their wrench's are ok. I never use the twists/ long handled/ or Z's, just the 3 normal ones. I wished they would come out with a more comprehensive set that had different widths if the heads/ different lengths of the heads/ and different thicknesses. I only pick SFIC's, mostly, but there are tons of times where I wish I has like a tensioner that was slightly different from the 3 I have. Also, they should be making ergonomic TOK tensioners, IDK why the F@#k everyone sells them straight? The rest in the keyway good with those only when your lock is in a tilted vice. Using those when holding a lock in your hand or, worse yet, when it's attached to a door- good luck, they'll fall off repeatedly. Mad Bob used to make a bomb set but those are not available anymore and LPL just started producing a set, which I plan on buying, but his aren't curved, just bent, but it's still the only way to make them useable in most scenarios. So, in conclusion, I'd chuck the Chicago set/ knife/ jim/ and shims, add their short TH's or Flex pass or both/ Don't make the handles dipped/ I agree with you that I'd include the decoder (Doubles really well as a toothpick if you have some shit in your teeth,
I love this kit, I picked it up about 2-3 years ago. I added 4 things from sparrows to this kit. The master switch masterlock bypass, 2 euro picks (a medium and high) and the goat wrench cylinder lock turning tool.
I love this thing! I added a few things to it, some wave rakes, decoding tool, warded picks and a few of my Peterson picks. It's the perfect go-kit.

I bought the Ranger set for my son because he liked the idea of bypass tools and a basic set of picks.
I would + auto jigglers, decoder, deep hook, hinge pin popper, slip knot wire, & maybe a few bump keys. 🥂

I have this kit a while in retrospect I would switch out the jigglers for longer ones and the shims take up a lot of space, but as a basic starter edc I like it. Plenty of space left to customize.

This is a great design. I bought the pouch a couple of years ago and filled it with my own gear. The only thing I don’t like about it is, when attached to a belt, the snaps don’t hold very well. I constantly have to reach down and make sure the whole rig is still in place.
In addition to excellent picks, Sparrows cases are top notch. I don't have the Ranger, but I bought the (I believe) Monstrum case to house a bunch of my stuff, including pinning tweezers, a plug follower, and a small cylinder holder. I've had it for years, ever since the first year the Monstrum was made available, and it has not been babied. It still looks almost brand new, and there are zero issues with the stitching, the fabric, or the zipper.
Great video as always. That was an offset hybrid not the low HD. The low HD is only available in the monstrum kit or as a single pick. Anytime you see a pick like that in a set it is the offset hybrid.

You read my mind. I thought that it's missing a deep hook and the deciding tool. It's a nice kit full of good stuff albeit the case seems a little bulky. Then again if you are going to pack it out, it's a compromise worth having.

Nice bit of kit for relatively low security entry. I put together my EDC kit from two Sparrows Tuxedo cases, using the Sparrows picks without the very nice dipped handles that I like for practice picking. Actually, my favorite is the Sparrows picks with no handles, slipped into some ABS handles that I designed and 3D printed. My EDC kit is much smaller than the Ranger kit, but with more tools. The two thin flat pouches fit in the back of the large pocket of my tacticool pants with my cell phone in the outer portion of the pocket.

Good video. That was a lot of demos in a relatively fast time.
I have always been a fan of sparrows, I like the quality of their products, I agree with their prices, plus I like their dipped handles.
This set is going on my wish list, but I will personalize it, add another hook or maybe 2, and my favorite (offset snake) rake, exchange a couple of those wipers for a couple TOK wrenches, add a goat wrench or other tubelock tensioner, and add a decoder blade or exchange the bypass knife for one. I also think I'd only put about half of those shims in, and keep the rest at home and use the extra space for a few bump keys.
That I think would make the perfect set for an emergency responder with limited skills, military, or just an EDC for a locksmith.
I like the case (I like most sparrows cases) but since I wouldn't wear my set overtly, I'd pass on the belt pouch.

Thats a pretty well rounded kit. Add a deep hook, a notched decoder, an american lock bypass tool, couple petersen prybars, and maybe a traveler hook. if that kit wont get it just get the sledgehammer.

Nice kit. I really like the case. I'd also add some warded picks. Warded locks seem to still be popular in the States for outside uses like sheds.
It's an entry team kit sometimes we need to do non destructive or clandestine entry if we don't need to do that C6 works well
The attachment system with which it's compatible is known as MOLLE (MOdular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment), which is the system that the US military (or at least the Army) has been using for about the last 20 years.
This was my first serious pick set. Great kit. My one gripe was a lack of top of the keyway tensioning. They should ditch those stupid springy twisted wiper inserts and put a few of their knurled pry bars in there.

I’d love something similar that would hold my Revolver as well as my picks and bars. Also, attaching this to the exterior of my work bag would be and invitation for the police to stop and search me in London. It looks lovely for the correct use case though.
It’s not bad but the lack of top of the keyway turners seems like a big detractors but it seems no one includes them in entry to mid level kits just so you have to buy them separately. Also it would be nice to see manufacturers include more picks than rakes since you will use and abuse picks more than rakes overtime.

turning tools have always been sparrow's greatest weakness. i really wish they'd take a hint from multipick and add a bit more variety.

Again great video review of a great piece of kit but I would definitely up the bypass tools and drivers, I have some of the picks can be used with gloves on but think the heat wrap could do with being that wee bit more grippy. The case is good but molle need to be looked at and upgraded along with a bigger zip pull.
And I wonder if a full sized slim jim could some how be accommodated
Great review as usual. Good kit, if a bit too bulky and "tacti-cool" for me. I agree with your suggestions - shim and probe - though I maybe wouldn't add the long hook. My experience is that if someone is a experienced enough picker to lift those really high blocked pins, they are also experienced enough to build their own custom kit.
My revision would be to lose some redundant shims, and add a goat wrench, or better yet, add the comb bar set. It is amazing how many locks are vulnerable to combs. That comb bar set is ripe for review BTW, - just how well do those combi tools work?

The best part of that kit is its case. Also, I would happily omit the bypass knife if I could have, instead, a decoding tool for combination wheels. I do like the myriad of turning tools, but again, would eagerly forgo some of them in favor of top of the keyway ones.. especially the Sparrows "heavy bars" .040" & .050" Overall, it seems like a nice package that could use a couple minor upgrades. I don't think I would drop 72 USD for it, though.
I have been debating so long on the ranger kit. Which I love the case. The case is a big part of what I like this kid. I know I can get the case separate. The EOD kit is my second choice. I don't know which one to get. If money was no object i'd get him both. . I mean, I could get the EOD and buy the case separate. But I do wanna get one of the knifes. Wow, are you singing a different tune these days! You use to look down on bypassing. And yes I remember our conversations. The ranger kit is just a start, add in Bosnianbills prepper kit and Lock Picking Lawyer's Modem Rogue Bypass kit, and you will be close to my kit. Throw in a plused up Tuxedo kit and a EOD kit and you'll be there.
This is a great kit for first responders. I was surprised at the price, very reasonable. So inexpensive it would be easy to add some deep hooks and other tools as you suggest.

I figured that out just by picking up the first piece and the feel was POS even thou I have never used a lock pick before in my life. After reviewing your videos and other videos I am leaning towards Sparrows or Southord.. In my research I have heard people say Europe locks over American locks sets. Because of a tight budget I am looking for something under 50.00 US if it all possible. I live in America and I would like to get a set of picks that will work here in the states. Good basic kit overall IMO. Personally, I'd add some plastic latch shims to it (they'd fit easy in the main pouch if cut down to size) Maybe a few of the bypass tools that Sparrows also sells for some padlocks and Adams Rite locks, maybe their Eurodriver bypass tools, maybe a couple of dimple picks... Heck if you see them, maybe a lever lock turning tool and some pickwire... It all depends on what's popular where you're going to be using it.
Just got this and although the picks seems great. I don’t like the tension wrenches. They seem too thin and don’t come in varying thickness just widths.
I would like to add some tok tension tools.... Is the case available separately to fill with our personal selection of tools ?

Received yesterday, and tested it. To be honest, I'm a little bit disappointed. I get more good results with my Abona and Monith hooks than all this pouch... ;) :) :p For a serious beginner, I will suggest Multipick sets, or even an UK Souber Tools kit. Never mind, it extends my tools case. :)

Did you mention the picks' thickness? Unfortunately, the Sparrows site doesn't say. I'll assume it's 25 mils (most entry-level sets are thick for strength). I would definitely add a deeper hook and a monkey paw. And I might go with 20 mils instead of 25. (Why don't they have a thinner monkey paw?????)
Got the set just for the case and a month or so later they released just the cases. Not mad tho cause I got a bunch of extra stuff.

All 6 turning tools are the same thickness, only the width varies. This is not worthy of praise. The double sided wafer tools are nearly useless, as double sided wafer locks are rarely encountered.
Sparrows seems real hit and miss for me. Their coated rakes like their Bogota are fantastic. Their cases are also top notch. Their cool looking non coated handle rakes are mediocre and their turning tools are crap, especially their TOK turners.
