- As the World Cup comes to a close, what will happen to the workers who helped Qatar make it possible?
The small nation of Nepal has sent more workers to Qatar per capita than any other country.
In the fall of 2022, The New York Times spoke to nearly three dozen Nepalis - current and former construction workers in Qatar and members of their families - to learn what their lives are like now and what is next for them. Most had worked on construction projects related to the World Cup, including stadiums and other infrastructure that supported Qatar’s development boom.
After enduring at times exploitative or dangerous conditions, many workers said they remained stuck in poverty and debt, with no choice but to continue to work abroad, whatever the risks.

To anyone saying they "choose" to take on the debt: in many cultures, family is the only thing you have. Paying the medical bills of a father-in-law is not a question, and they are willing to do anything for them. They have no choice but to become debt slaves or lose everything they hold dear

I agree a lot of people of richer families prefer to go abroad cause they want better life style and to show off but majority of Nepalese are forced to go for their family's sake. You would think these poor people wouldn't have tried to work in Nepal first? But the wages they get are not enough to fulfill their living condition. Low payment, higher taxes and everything is expensive.

I think it’s crucial to point out that this problem entails most of the Gulf; it’s not just Qatar (and not just FIFA). For those who feel covering problems like this is an attack on their country, my question is: shouldn’t we be able to discuss human rights critically? Perhaps doing so is not an attack on a certain country; rather, it’s about establishing human conditions everyone deserves.
It concerns the US as well. The number of illegal mexican workers who work and die at the construction sites is astounding. To add salt to injury, at least the workers in Qatar are legal workers who benefit from security while those in USA don't have any papers, their bosses can decide not to pay them or make them work in poor conditions and nothing can be done
I agree completely, but it's an issue everywhere. We have a lot of issues with human rights for migrant workers in the US as well. I think it's really an issue everywhere. But yes we should be able to discuss it without people feeling it's an attack.

@@m.b3191 labor trafficking is a huge issue in the US as well. I had a therapist who worked with a lot of people who were trafficked for their labor (mostly farming) and most of them were migrant workers.

As for construction workers’ rights in the Gulf, while it’s true that they’re technically legal, the situation is eerily similar to the US (there have been several reports of their passports being taken away and even unpaid labor).

Most of these migrant workers were Nepalese people. I am from Nepal too and I feel sad for many people who passed away during this World Cup. Of course, one would argue they brought this upon themselves, but when you're trapped between poverty and debt, what option do you actually have? Nepal's economical status is poor. So one can only dream of a high-paying job here. Not to mention, how many countries that played in the World Cup actually remember Nepal? Or even these people who made it all possible? Simply put, none. Period!

It's the foreign corporations/conglomerates who got the contracts who should offer compensation, not the Qatari government, yet no one is identifying them. This practice is not only occurring in Qatar but worldwide. All those UN countries have the same issues, fir example, America with their horrific treatment of Mexican migrant workers etc.

If the Nepalese government cannot create jobs then create environment where multinational companies could invest and let’s say open factories or warehouses and use local manpower to run them. This could help some.
And do you think multinational companies would risk and invest by opening factories in such mountainous locations/landscapes of Nepal? There are so many better countries in Asia to open up factories and production facilities geographically and demographically wise speaking.

These things keeps investments away. There are certainly more reasons for sure. But cheapest labor than other countries is a plus.

In nepal there are lots of family's living in poverty, women have to carry water up high hills which causes uterus and ovary related injuries, and there's not many hospital or awareness on this. There's also alot of flooding and earthquakes in nepal. Bhutan, nepals neighbor is totally different, they are a small kingdom with the best king in the world, thats probably why the people are so happy and content. You won't find people living in poverty and even there educational system is amazing in bhutan

I was shocked when i had just shifted to middle east and was slogging for 10 hours a day, i was quite depressed than i met a construction worker told me he paid 2500 usd (his life time savings) to get there, he was an afghan national but still offered me some cash because he thought i might have reached there empty handed. But as an engineer usually everything is taken care of by the company.
Qatar Govt should be accountable to United Nations for this, especially on Human rights ground. Some people from my state went to golf & never returned. Some returned as a corpse. They said that the agencies hold their passports which is against human rigjts. There's something odd going on there.

Shame on the World Cup for legitimizing a country with human rights atrocities like Qatar. A Well known Sporting Event like the World Cup shouldn’t be giving these authoritarian regimes who exploit workers and brutalize its citizens a sports cleans. God Bless those workers though. The World Cup should be telling these regimes their countries are not getting the event unless they can pay the workers building it a fair wage, a safe work environment, and humane living conditions. And the World Cup should be sending inspectors to make sure those standards are met or they reserve the right to pull the Event. The same goes for FIFA
Most importantly: The location and timing of those checks needs to be unpredictable to whatever country / companies are building the infrastructure. Otherwise you have work sites where everything seems fine and sites that are horrible.
FIFA is basically giving Qatar a massive ad. Maybe we should make FIFA sponsors back out?

FIFA is guilty to have allowed Qatar to host the games. They should and can pay to compensate, so why aren't they?
This is happening to all the youth from Nepal due to unstable political conditions were the youth have no expectations after completion of their studies so decided to built other nation after they are ready to explore what they have learnt till their age and will decide to continue their generation abroad despite the fact this will continue in upcoming future as well.
Given all the money that Qatar can spend on an extravagant sporting event, it is very obvious that the country can at least pay towards making all of its foreign laborers debt free. I am sure the total amount would be less than what they spent in building one of those stadiums. It is a very easy thing for a rich nation like Qatar and a way to show their respect and sympathy to all those, who perished and who still struggle.
Qatar paid the staff company, if they give more it gonna goes to the company wallet not the worker. Do you really think the staff company that ilegally held the workers passport gonna give the workers extra money from Qatar govt?

That means govt had enough database and information if they intended to do it properly but foreign employment and manpower companies are making money off of hardworking laborers by limiting access to such information. Qatar doesn't care about brown skinned poor migrant workers. They just want to get the job done for as little money as possible. They have no respect for blue collar jobs , servants or maids etc

The workers should be paid more though. Building stadiums in the middle of a desert isn't exactly nice. Sounds more like torture from everything I've seen.

@@vez3834 Lol, no it didn't contribute to it, you can ask them for help pushing regulations, but you simply can't push something that has been taking place for decades if not longer on a service that Qatar just now decided to monopolize. Modern slavery sure, one of the guys in the video clearly stated the system had been around, he and others have used it for years and even stated he was paid 300/month. I understand people could have an issue with this but the world cup only helped bring the issue to your attention. nothing more

1 - it’s not a qatar problem, it’s gulf or even world wide and not just with FIFA, it has been happening everywhere
2- it’s all your big western companies who own these projects so why not have them accountable too?
3- as someone from Nepal, there are so many manpower companies who cheat on poor people, take money and send them off for something they weren’t even trained off. So let’s first start with our country, our regulation and govt before pointing at others

In Qatar, government projects are awarded to big contractors - mostly managed by foreigners. They hire workers from overseas through agencies in south East Asian countries. The agency takes fees from the companies/contractors. As a result Contractors expect the workers to not work elsewhere once the workers arrive in Qatar.
The government cannot control every single recruitment happening in the private sector - which is run by foreigners themselves.
For decades, workers have been coming to Qatar from south east Asia willingly (nobody forces them on planes). The workers know that conditions in their countries (and in Europe) are worse than in Qatar.
If the Europeans are sincere about those south East Asians, then they should hire them in Europe
@@mayankdewli1010 well, that depends though. There are still exploitation of migrant workers going on Europe and of course, this obviously covered less by the Western propagand media. Likewise, the reason why worker do not suffer from these problems in certain modern and well developed European countries is because they are among the first countries who practice labour law and workers right. Likewise, they have a worker board or association who would educate the workers about this.
In some developing countries such as India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, they do not have such worker board/association and most of the population are not well versed about worker rights and labour laws. This however, allow the local tycoons and private businessmen take advantage of the poor working class in the developing countries.
Moreover, these unscrupulous businessmen would lobby or bribe huge amounts of money into corrupted politicians to veto against certain labour laws, e.g. salary increase, that would incur huge losses or bring massive disadvantages against the establishments of these private businessmen.
There are many instances where lot of unscrupulous businessmen especially in Asia and Southeast Asia bribe government officials to give green light to their projects even though their project lacks safety measures and engineers to do so.

They are like family together, I live in Qatar, and I see household workers/maids taking care of children and having fun with their parents. Although I don't know what they do in private, but they aren't forced to stay with them unless you live in a strict and worse household. As a nepali myself... I also don't want to stay in my own country..... I just want to complete my study and go abroad ... there are literally no opportunities to afford a standard lifestyle here ... and I feel bad for all these people of my own country... even some of my family members are in gulf country doing these works .... I just hope nepal can prosper someday and no one would have to leave this country for job opportunities

The 2022 WC was the best ever, there's no doubt about that and the hypocracy of the Western media has bern exposed and is pathetic. I'm not Qatari or from any Gulf State. It's the Western and Chinese companies/corporations who built the WC and the labour brokers who should be looked into as they employed, sourced and paid these workers. Also, if it's so bad, why go and work in Qatar knowingly. There have been many migrant workers in Qatar who are happy with their experience too and are still in Qatar.

We Nepali have mental health degrading day by day. Lack of opportunities, poor social life, all youth depressed with high expectations. I'm 28, all of my friends are outside nation. I find no purpose after waking up and play CS GO whole day.. But this year new youth faces rised up on constitution. Let's hope if they can make changes if not I'm well prepared to be doomed. I'm going to be the FREAK.
I suggest these reporters should also investigate on Nepalese banks who are earning huge profits from Nepalese people working abroad and not working for internal utilisation of those remittances for local development.

Compensation cases are one of the most successful guaranteed cases and generate profits that is not simple, and with this great free media support, unless no one or any official body, human rights organizations and the embassies concerned have submitted to get from Qatar 🇶🇦
