    tips:
    1) run a vin check/carfax
    2) ask questions (in description)
    3) test drive in a variety of conditions
    4) inspect the vehicle
    5) take your time
    still watch the video though, very through insight.

    I tell my students all the time that at a young age, new cars are some of the worst investments you can purchase because they depreciate so quickly. Once you drive it off the lot, you lose a lot of value. Inspections and test drives are crucial (car fax as well). Another interesting video. Thank you!

      New Cars are always a worst investment, you literally gain nothing for decades. I ride an E-Bike to work. The bike was $900, the transit system would cost me $110 a month. That means in about 8.2 months my bike begins to save me money every single time I use it vs transit because now the cost of the bike is justified. If I ride the bike for another 2 years, I saved $2,640. vs Transit. If I walk to work, although it takes me 50 mins vs the bike's 16-22 mins, I pay nothing, I simply gain every single time I walk. If I walk for 3 years I gain $3960 in my pocket vs the bike. If I buy a used car that will last me 5-8 years with minimum up keep for around $2,500 same as with the bike, I have to wait a certain time frame until I gain from it. That time frame vs the metro is 22 months until I gain, a little more due to gas. That means after 2 years every time I drive my car vs the metro I save money. Now try that calculation with a car that cost $25,000 brand new. You literally NEVER gain from it.
      I refuse to by a new car until I make so much money that analysis is irrelevant to me. But as of right now, I'm NEVER getting a brand new car. Even when I hit my first goal of $100,000 a year, I'm buying a FJ Cruiser used and riding that out. But my first car right now, I'm going cheap. I'm more than halfway to my financial goal. People are just scared of buying a car from a Private seller because the car lots and things make it seem like they are the authority in the car market and that you SHOULDN'T go to a private seller. I know there's risk, but with basic knowledge and being smart about it, paying $3000 for a used car from a person vs $8000 for the same car for a lot makes way more sense. What doesn't make sense is paying $18,000, $25,000, $40,000, $60,000 for whatever car, never gaining back from it when most average folks don't even have a salary that justifies that purchase.
      They think "Oh I have good credit, so I pay $200 a month for my car so I'm good" But their salary is $50,000 a year, that's a stupid investment to me when a car is that much of your salary. I wouldn't even by a $50,000 car with a $120,000 salary, that's too much. God forbid you get hurt or sick or such and have that cost hanging over your head, it's a risk. People have no problem seeing low cost used cars from a seller as a risk, YET they don't see high cost new cars from a dealer as a risk? make it make sense. Life is not perfect and things ALWAYS happen, therefor any huge cost that lingers is a risk to you which includes your house, your car, outstanding debts like credit cards. Having huge cost lingering long term is more of a risk than a cheap car from a private seller, so ask yourself why you're scared of THAT more than what I said.

Bought a 94 mini cooper for $16k,kept it a year and sold it on BAT for $22k. Bought a 64 caddy for $16k ,kept it a year and sold it for $16.500. Bought a 17 Dodge challenger 16 months ago for $30k all in at a dealer and sold it for $23k yesterday so that wasn't profitable and my last new car purchase where I'm taking a bath.

      @@tommak6516 I told myself that but circumstances change and a new car loses value very fast. With a lien it’s hard to get rid of and assurances are not always there. Personal experience I had the transmission go out on a 2 year old car I bought new followed by several wheel bearings before I sold it for under kbb after an error popped up that could have been the onboard computer. Pandemic saved me because I managed to sell that car with rolled over debt a couple years later for about the same I paid for it.

Most sellers don't even want to know if there is major problem with car. For this reason, you have to be really really patient and only even consider buying used car only if they allow your mechanic to inspect car at his shop.

I live in New England and I think as we get closer to fall, I should be able to get a good deal on a Miata. Most people ask WAY too much for their car. I'm slowly looking for a different vehicle, I have a 98 Buick regal and, it's been through alot One winter, I left a window down and it damaged the back seats badly, plus I had a tow, and the area where they hook is badly damaged, It was towed to a Firestone, and they said I needed a new battery, so 2 months later I pop my hood up and the covering over the Motor is gone, makes me wonder what else was taken, So I think women out there like myself should take photos of there car or vehicle, and if it had to have work done check it afterwards, at least then you will have photos, I didn't do this so I have no proof, but I will never use the Firestone ever again, in Taylor M. And I really don't care for Car fax, a salvage title in Michigan, is orange.....Nice video & tips Thanks👍

    This is a dumb question but I haven't had a car in years and never bought one on my own. I saw a couple I was interested in on Craigslist. The description said it comes with plates/tabs title transfer and registration paper work, so no need to go to the DMV. But the picture shows no plates on the actual car. So can I even test drive it?? None the less drive it off the property and take it home?? Lol. Is it just a simple matter of screwing the "plates" up there that the owner said it comes with??

    • @financiallift6185
      @financiallift6185  3 роки тому +3

      Well, they can sign the title over but you will always have to take the title to get a new one under your name. So keep that in mind.
      The plates, could be a toss up. Some people take it off and stop paying insurance if the car is sitting in a garage or if it's like on their own property like a farm. That being said though, this could be a stolen car too. What I'd suggest is before wasting your time, ask if they'd be willing to show a driver's license and proof that their name matches the name on the title. And then run the VIN online and see if it's reported stolen. Otherwise, depending on where you test drive, yes I'd put the plate back on.

    I am buying my first used car and probably private sale. I have learned a lot by pulling reports. And have learned how valuable it is to spend the money. So far 4 for 4 cars I was about to buy had problematic history. And for 3 of those the owners are shocked because they bought the car from a used dealership that did not have to disclose the problematic history (Florida). I’ve seen two cars with rolled back odometers, one rebuilt the person knew but appeared to be avoiding specifying it was rebuilt and one car that had been in a major accident when it was a rental 2 months after buying sold at auction and the new owner who drove it for 7 years did not know the seriousness of the accident. Three buyers where directly misled by the dealer that sold it and one appears to have taken advantage of the person being a new immigrant to sell a car whose odometer was rolled back well over 100k miles.
    I have not gotten to the stage or seeing the cars in person but I have gathered if vin checks out I will probably invest in a mechanic to check out the car for me.

    • @financiallift6185
      @financiallift6185  3 роки тому +4

      Well a few things, 1) when you take more than 10k out of any bank, you'll have to fill out this disclosure form. Doesn't mean that you can't do it, just letting you know that this is a tool banks use to prevent illegal things from happening but MANY have had to do this for car buying.
      2) Be caution of how you give the money to the owner. I personally would have the person meet at the bank once you've already test driven the car and agreed on the price. That way, you're not meeting a stranger in a dim light parking lot that knows you're carrying a large sum of cash. People get mugged that way.
      3) are you asking money from the bank, or you have this money, because if you're wanting a loan from the bank, that's different and is a different discussion.
      Hope this helps and happy to respond more

    Man i learned more in this video than i did in hs. Ty op.
    I do have a follow up question:
    My mechanic doesnt make house calls and works 35 miles from the car im interested in. The car is owned by a senior couple (the wife) who had surgery and cant drive anymore apparently. The craigslist ad says she was 90, but the husband (over the phone) said she was 75 with leg surgery, so thats a red flag for me.. the car (pictured in the ad) looks immaculate and under 100k miles for a very good price so it seems a little too good to be true. I originally asked if he would be willing to meet at my mechanic so he could check it out, but he said hes old and doesnt want to drive or go anywhere.. i have an appt later this week to check it out, and am going to ask them if i can take it to my mechanic, but i dont want to offend them by somehow asking wrong. Is there a routine way to go about this? Im assuming i need to offer some sort of collateral, but im weary of handing over my ID or offering too much/little of a deposit

    • @financiallift6185
      @financiallift6185  3 роки тому +1

      No problem! If not for having a family with car knowledge, I'd been lost on my first purchase as well.
      So two things 1) you touch on a REALLY good thing which is to look for cars from older people or in rich neighborhoods. Yes you'll get people that are snobs and over value their car but you can find a good deal because elderly people typically have a car with minimal use so the age may be old, but it has low miles and is in good condition. So the price isn't too sus to me. Same is true with the 90/75 thing. They're old. Typo doesn't surprise me.
      2) that being said, I would proceed AS IF YOU'RE MEETING A 30 BUFF STRANGER. so if you wouldn't feel comfortable meeting alone, then don't just because you assume they're elderly. I always meet in public places but if they're insisting they're house, scope out the area before you get there without telling the seller and have a second person with you and text a third person where you're going and when you left/get back. If you don't see the car there, peace out. If you feel good, I'd still call from within your car, for the old man to step out and meet you at the car. No old guy, peace out. I seem paranoid but honestly no car is worth your life or a traumatic experience.
      With the mechanic, they SHOULD be willing to either let you take it yourself with no deposit, or the old guy goes with you. Have to make another comment. Stay tuned for part 2 haha

    • @financiallift6185
      @financiallift6185  3 роки тому +5

      For me, when it comes to the money exchange, I would ideally have my friend in a second car with the money. Or be close that I can go to a bank or something. So, the giving a deposit thing, no way. Then they KNOW you're carrying cash or at least assume you have it.
      I've tested driven plenty of cars from private sellers and almost all, surprisingly, let me drive it around without them and without a deposit or anything. A picture of you ID would accomplish the same thing right? You can replace an ID for 50 bucks, so why would that stop anyone from taking off with the car. So, if he's not willing to go with you, and really not willing to let you take it to a mechanic, I'd back out of the deal, or play hard ball on price. Ok you don't want me to check it out, knock $1k off then. At the end of the day, living with a bad car and sinking money into it, is way more painful than having to wait a few extra weeks to find the right car and seller. Let me know if you have any more questions. Happy to help and best of luck
