A year ago getting back into skating I went through complete board madness as well. I was skating everything from 8.47 8.5 8.6 8.7 8.88 9 (egg) 9.25 and 9.8 (Gonz) All had short WB 14-14.25. On a random Saturday skating at the local spot down the street, this younger guy maybe early 20’s rolls up and joins me and was just killing the spot. I asked him his board set up - 8.25 x 31.75 w/ 14wb Chocolate deck, 149 Indy hollows and 53mm Spitfire classics. He was cool enough to let me skate it for about 15 mins and I didn’t want to give it back. I’m 46 but I can still skate and for some stupid reason I didn’t think about an 8.25. Maybe it was a confidence/mental thing? Now I have a bunch of shit to sell 😂
8.25 has been my go to from the start. However, I have figured out that I am not going to be a tech skater. I have moved away from popsicles and am riding 8.75 and lager shaped boards. I can get all my tricks on them. You seem stoked to be skating and that is rad. Awesome that someone was able to film for you. Great follow shots. I setup the big slappy board today. I did it live. Not sure how it went 😂, but it is setup and that is what matters.
Yeah, Bill is rad. Hopefully, we get to skate together more and film more follow shots. I passed out on the couch and missed the live, haha. I'll definitely check it out though.
@@KevinNiceTry no worries man. It no one will watch a 90 minute video 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Looking forward to more session with your homie. Always easier to skate hard when you have someone to skate with.
I remember the first time I tried an 8.25 deck back in 2012. It was an Almost Double Impact 8.25 x 32 with a 14.25-inch wheelbase, boasting a full concave. It suited my 6-foot, 180-pound frame and shoe size 11-12 perfectly. I didn't feel like the board was too big or too small, and it was easy to keep under control whether I was street skating or hitting the park. Since acquiring that deck, I've exclusively stuck to 8.25 decks. I've experimented with 8.0, 8.125, 8.375, and even 8.06, but none have matched the perfection of the 8.25.
I started on 7.8 back in the days then when i got back on during covid, i bought an 8.25… skated it for a while but i wanted to go smaller than 8.25 feeling nostalgic so i tried an 8 but it felt too small. Then i tried an 8.125 and it is nice so i stayed on that for a while… i was getting bored and bought another 8.25 setup and I forgot how perfect and comfortable the 8.25 is. Im 35 6’1 11.5 feet so it makes sense for me. I still have an 8.125 as a second setup to mess with on days i feel tired after skating the 8.25.
@@itzEnJ I had a similar journey. I went from 8.0, then 8.25, then 8.38, then 8.125, and then 8.25 and thats the perfect fit for me. Im 26, 6 feet, size 11 shoe. I feel that 8.25 decks are perfect for people 6 feet to 6foot 3inches
Man it’s so good to see you back out there enjoying it! I’m hoping to get out there tomorrow. But just checked and it seems like it’s going to rain (again). I haven’t had a non rain session in about a month now 😢. Setup my own 8.25” two weeks ago that I’m hoping to get to try out soon having been on 8.5” or more for the last two years.
Yeah, also love SC decks. Also recommend Chris Robert's symmetrical twin tail Chocolate board is 8.25 with 14 WB and he also has an 8.5 with 14 WB (not common). I do like the 8.5 a lot.
Nice session you guys had! Ripping! Yeah, 8.25 is a good size. I also ride 8.25 board most of the time. chocolate GO52 shape with 14 wheelbase. For slappies have another setup. 9.25 special shape (Blast skates), 14.125 wheelbase. Wide board and trucks are fun for slappy sessions.
I moved from a size 8 with a 14.25 wheelbase to an 8.125 with a 14 wheelbase. I will say that because the wheelbase is shorter, tricks actually feel easier to do despite the slightly bigger size. Something about the trucks being slightly smaller than the width of the deck in combination with that shorter wheelbase is helping with flip tricks. My concern is how I look on the board as you pointed out earlier in the video. Not too sure if a size 8 shoe compliments an 8.125 deck.
I’ve had a similar journey but one step up haha. I was stuck between 8.25” and 8.5” for a while, waffling back and forth. I realized my first 8.5” (which I had really enjoyed) was a Powell board with a 14.375” WB. Once I figured that out I ordered an 8.5” creature stump that’s been a lot of fun. Wide, 14.25” WB which is my sweet spot since I’m slightly taller, and decently wide/round kicks paired with a mellow concave. I’ve got a couple girl boards with similar dimensions after i get through this one. Think I’ve also found my sweet spot (although I won’t lie; a 14.5” WB can be fun).
What is your shoe size and height ? I’m 6 foot 3 with 13 shoes. Everyone tells me to get 8.5 but I really want a 8.25 . No I’m between bec I can’t find Krux trucks in that size haha
@peopleperson7263 im ur same height with size 12. I started with a 8.25 and really grow to like it. 8.5 def feels more at home with bigger feet but 8.25 ist hard to get used to imo.
I went the other way around, I realised I feel a lot more confident and comfortable on my board (AF1 Hollow trucks) when my deck has a wheelbase above 14.38". The ACE's shorten the wheelbase of a deck so for me those combined with a short wheelbase deck (14.25" and below) doesn't feel good :) I am skating an 8.5" Uma Evan Smith deck with a 14.5" wheelbase, AF1 55 Hollows & Spitfire 54mm Classics and it feels like a match made in heaven. Maybe my favourite setup so far, it feels light and responsive even though it's an 8.5" (it feels smaller somehow)
I just switched from 8.5 to 8.25 also and have been loving it. I went ahead and ordered like five 8.25's they felt so good lol. I am running the ace classic 44s which is 8.35 wide and they are perfect for the 8.25 decks.
I know I sound like a slave to the trends, but I swear the 8.38 that FA/hockey makes is the best deck ever made. Short wheelbase, short tail, huge nose. It's the perfect deck. 8.38 width 31.5 length 14.18 wheelbase 6.5" tail 7" nose With Thunder light 149s. ❤❤❤
My personal favorite setup is the dlx 8.5×31.8×14.25 with the III concave with venture standard 5.8 HI, f4 52mm classics, and swiss. Everything just works perfectly. It's a nimble 8.5.
I've been using drywall screws since '88. Mostly because I would take any used/unwanted rails and no one ever had the screws. I used to cut them with a hacksaw, now I use a Dremel.
Was debating a 8 or 8.25 after taking some years off. Used to skate 7.75 back in the day lol, that was normal back then. I went with 8.25, hope I chose the right deck.
How have you found skating ace trucks (which aren’t super tall, I think? ) with taller wheels like the 55 mm conicals? Do you find wheelbite to be an issue? I’ve been thinking about moving up to 56 mm radials from 54 mm conicals to get more speed around my crusty local, but I don’t want to be fighting wheelbite or use risers.
The aces with 55mm are fine. I left the bushings stock tightness as well. I get some wheel bite but I always did even with risers. I think it works fine.
@@KevinNiceTry cool cool thanks for the info. I’m going to take the plunge on bigger wheels then on my forged hollow indies wi tú the small baseplate. Maybe I’ll just become a wheel well guy haha

If you're just starting skating again I'd say go with the 8.5. It'll be better for riding and ollies. More stable. You can always size down eventually when you wanna do flip tricks.
@@KevinNiceTry that’s what I was thinking , but I only want to buy one set of trucks and I want an exact fit haha. Thanks again for the replies - I think I may just go gut instinct and get 8.25. I prob won’t change it bec the truxks
Im just learning but i skipped 8 and went 8.25 because im over 6 foot. Def seems like the best in the middle size. Even tho 8.5 seems really solid but 8.25 just nice sweet spot.
I think 8.25 may be best for me as well, but I think I like 14.25 WB over 14. Although the 14" WB has expedited the process of learning 360 flips for me (on an 8" board), I think I like the stability that comes with extra quarter inch. 8" with 14" WB feels a little cramped for me and I keep over-rotating my kickflips. I've got an 8.38 with 14.38 WB coming, and will probably put Indy's on that.
