The challenge to getting a govt job is waiting for someone to die for a vacancy to open.
Fenti saga helps
We’ve actually been hiring in the NYC courts for the first time in years and only 50% of the positions were filled.
Not anymore. Job performance and conduct is reviewed every 90 days now. You dont see walking cadavers working government jobs as often now. There is a limit to how many years you can work full time.
Frfr did it and never looked back.
Actually, many government employees are RETIRING "en mass" with over 20+ years of service creating job openings at the local, county, state, and federal level. Go to the jobs portal of any government website, and you might be surprised at the amount of job openings available.
This is like a government ad to get more young people in government jobs. Most current gov workers are really old and retiring
Yep it’s called propaganda
That and many of them really can’t find jobs so
Yes they are
@intuitivecthey get retirement benefits lass6401
@@jahmalonbethel1307 I'been a federal empoyee for 30 years. I can retire now but I'm not. I'm 56. Yes, there are some old timers but at my agency there are lot of people who just hit their 40s because of strong recuitment of colleg grads 20s. Find a good government job with promotion potentil is like everything else. It's all about timing.
that is me - I am one of the youngest person in the building - the average age of my city government is like 55. There are more people over 60 than under 30. please come apply gen z
Me too, I work for VA and I’m 31 the youngest person in our working area. It’s like 60 of us btw.
Yes!! half our people in New York retired during Covid and we haven’t been able to fill positions.
I drive a city bus and make nearly 80k w/o OT.

The government cares more about people than CEOs. The CEOs only care about The BLUF
We have hired some of them for office and when they find out we are serious about NO personal phones allowed during work or you will be fired after 1 warning. They never come back.
Working for local or state governments is way better than the federal.
yup, way more stable! at the state level there is usually less politics involved when it comes to the budgeting for the different government agencies
Working for a City or County pays the most out of the 3 levels of government. Plus we are in a labor union and we get automatic wage raises based on inflation rates.
Exactly. Avoid the politics. It’s how I stay sane. We actually keep things working. The appointed people tend to come and go
That probably depends where you are.
No, it depends on where you are located. Some states have no money and the pay reflects that. For example, Illinois were paying attorneys $54,000 with several years of experience several years ago when there was a Republican Governor. The federal government pays way more than $54,000. And many city jobs paid more than $54,000.

I used to be a huge supporter of democracy but these days I’m not as sure. “Protect our democracy” is thrown around so much these days but do we really live in a democracy when every politician is corrupt and there’s only two real parties to vote for? We really just live in a duel dictatorship.
You're willfully ignorant if you think the two parties are mirror versions of each other.
@@purplemist7 competition drives positive change in a capitalist democratic society. The competition between Joe and Donald is terrible because there really is no alternatives. Both parties may be different in some aspects but they’re both institutionalized and part of the state stifling competition. Don’t project your ignorance on to me.
@purplemist7 lol. One sure way to tell if someone has been successfully manipulated by their preferred conmen is found in how they deny being targeted for manipulation by their preferred conmen. Congratulations on completing the program.

I love my Government Job .
Yes, I worked through Covid. My paycheck did not stop. We may earn less than corporate. But the benefits are awesome. The vacation time, holidays, and step raises. My pension and deferred compensation retirement.
Yes! I do too. Are there more amazing jobs out there? Also yes. But it’s the best decision for me now. I hope more people apply. We need new blood
@@girlwithnoniche7852 I make triple what private sector does in my profession and do less work with much more work life balance. it all depends on the position.
@@royharper2003the agency I work is really paying almost triple when I started. My coworkers are making doctors salaries. To just sit and do absolutely nothing stressful. I understand
I work in healthcare and my health and dental insurance also food is paid for by the hospital. I get paid less but those perks help in not having to think about additional expenses.
I’d rather be paid appropriately and pay for my own food.
If you have a Federal level job and are in the right agency, with good promotion potential those are the way to go.
The benefits are nice, you get time off, and if you cannot live off of close to six figures and above incomes (despite your loans being forgiven possibly through PSLF), you are doing something wrong.
It's about time. I've been a civil servant for the last 28 years. I used to tell all my nieces, nephews, and all their friends to apply after they graduated high school & college. They always looked at me like I had a mutant monkey on my shoulder, lol.. I am doing very well for myself, and I am thankful for my union city job.
@nbcnews The symbol next to the 8% at time 1:56 is incorrect. That is a greater than sign. This < is the less than sign.
I was thinking the same!
I took a civil service job 9 years ago. I wanted to work a 9-5 to have more time for myself. Working in my own was very difficult when you are young trying to start a family. I don’t want to work extra hours or weekends. I want to have a life and spend time with my kid. I took a 40% pay cut. But now I make more and have moved up and I’m fine. And yes, the benefits level it off. Making 10k a month as an entrepreneur sounds great for people selling courses on UA-cam, but in NYC that doesn’t get you much further than a 4k a month govt job after taxes with benefits. Just like the trades, it’s an option and everyone has to make the decision for themselves if it works for them.
Good thing military will still get preference over non military
Now only honorably discharged vets get derived preference when applying for federal government jobs. The parent, spouse or widow can only if the veteran is unable to use it and they meet the requirements. Divorced spouses and children are no longer eligible.
@@Lillith1203 the requirements are nope and No

Smart move. Back in the days, i use to get The Chief paper every week. It was a government/civil service announcement of all available jobs.
Good luck !
I try to convince my nephew to get a civil service job. Even if you leave you will still get credit for it if you come back later. There’s a lot of benefits financially and personally
you must be really old, not there's a website
The younger generation is starting to wake up and realize that job security is one of the most important components in their life. Benefits such as medical and pension are more important than than pursuing the almighty dollar in the private sector and still being laid off anyway. Also at the end of the day or your career you feel like your life has had purpose.
The stability and subsequently the peace of mind it has brought to my life cannot be understated
O god… gets fired from Starbucks decides to the government
Starbucks and Costco only hire college grads now. So might as well.
I worked at the post office as a carrier during the summer. It wasn’t for me (mostly because I was pregnant) but if I was younger & more agile it was a great job
I tell my new grad colleagues to do a 20 year stint in the military....which will absolutely fly by...which it does for everyone....get that little retirement, get another job for 20 more years...40 total....get that money and then retire.....I wish i woulda listened...i did not.....I coulda retired 20 years ago....then found the job im working now....then had that money with SSI which is in three years.....Fat income....fat!!

Say it louder for the people in the back! This is ABSOLUTELY the way to go! I know so many people who have taken this route and are truly living the life
This is good and bad.
Getting a government job is a pain in the-
Most jobs may require a background check/Security Clarence and too many Americans can’t pass a check; until someone is dead then you can’t move in or up. At the same time, we are losing people from retirement faster than gaining people so there’s a void in the market, many roles need people. But once you are in you are in.
With federal job positions you have an assessment every 90 days the first year. Poor performance or conduct can get you laid off as well as government shut downs etc. No tenure after a certain time in any longer. You can work 20 years and get laid off or terminated.
@@Lillith1203 total BS
Good for young people, get smarter and work hard for a better future for yourselves. Corporations will only ever try to take advantage of you and profit off your labor for as long as they can get away with, don’t let them do it to you too like they’ve done with older generations.
But toxic as a policymaker.
Getting a gov job is extremely difficult!
I have been working in government for 15 years, make 150k salary and have a Pension, matching 401k and get raises every year! Also I get to retire at 50 and start collecting my Social Security Supplement too!

But they’re being given preference now to be hired back. It’s not perfect
not federal, we always get paid for furloughs, they aren't laid off it is just the government didn't have a budget yet. tell that to all the people that lsot their jobs during Covid or whenever a private company isn't making enough money to make payroll

Idk if I'd be ok with my employment status being determined on which president we have that term
I've worked for the the federal government for 30 years and the president has nothing to do with employment status
it's not easy to get a FED job, state is probably easier depending on location. FED jobs are very black and white, applicant is ranked based on education and experience and you actually are assigned a score in the application process and only the top scorers are selected for interviews. but yes FED and state gov jobs are nearly FOREVER jobs.
Yep! I work for the state and have not looked back. Pension, tuition assistance, and good medical benefits.
Teaching jobs are no longer secure. In AUHSD, 253 Math, Science, History, English, and PE teachers got layoff notices. Some of the teachers have been teaching in the district and over 20 years. There are no cuts to any other positions in the school district. No other departments had cuts either.

There will come many things governments do today that will be taken away from them. Government jobs will become risky for this reason.
Interesting story but seems a bit exaggerated. As someone that works a corporate private sector job I can certainly see the appeal of the job stability and strong benefits offered by government jobs.
In my industry there's so much focus on automation and outsourcing and AI will only make things worse. Sometimes it feels like a race to the bottom with companies constantly squeezing employees due to cut cutting
You may not get laid off at the federal level but the government is shutting down constantly and they require essential personnel to work without pay
So far the hours worked do get paid off. The threat comes if a certain small-state anti-government side gains more power and institutes more "business practices" (i.e. unpaid overtime, manager impunity, unrealistic metrics, etc) into the bureaucracy.

I think it is a good idea to recruit far more young people into the federal government, but ONLY if they are genuinely interested in serving on behalf of American citizens. Essentially, when you work for the federal government, your real role, irrespective of your title, is "Public Servant." Proud of younger generations stepping up to the plate, those that have been in these jobs for 30+ years now, are retiring. These are more secure jobs and have better benefits, but, layoffs and suspensions happen more than people think, main reasons, job performance and conduct. These jobs do not come with the tenure now as they did in the past, there are more rules and regulations now. Also, your work record from past employment is taken into consideration. My parents both worked government jobs, SS and VA hospital. We had a solid mid to upper mid class income. My dad with VA 1959-1979, he retired at 20 years as he was a veteran of 2 wars. My mother with SS 1961-1993 left as a disability claims officer.

The "free market" of now entrenched incumbents provided young Americans no substantial property or lifestyle for them to protect. The government is the only other option since the private sector clearly cannot self-regulate.
