  • In this video, we take a look at how you can set up a blank Cubase project to prep for scoring a scene from a film. We'll learn how to synchronize SMPTE codes, mark the contour shifts, and even tackle tempo mapping!

After not using Nuendo for composition for about 2 years, I had completely forgotten how to sync tempos and meters to the cuts. Thank you so much for this video. 🙏😇💕

I am so glad you used Cubase for this tutorial. I can't seem to find many "beginner" videos on Cubase. Not even the Steinberg videos are any good. I feel they start in the middle, as if you already know how to use Cubase. Thanks again!

You could use cycle markers for the dialogue and you’ll see a nice little bar from the in to the out, helps as a visual reference

So helpful!! I'm sure I'm showing my ignorance with this, but how do you add the musical "sketches?" Just take an audio file and put it in?

I'll typically copy and paste my midi notes into a new file or just re-record them on a midi keyboard :)

So if your score changes time signature halfway through, would it be better to just do it in a different project or is it ok to just change it halfway through?

It's up to you. It's perfectly fine to change time signature half way through a track, but if you think it would be easier to work with multiple projects you're free to split them up.

Why is Cubase better in Filmscore then eg. Ableton?

Good question! Every DAW has it's own strengths, but that doesn't necessarily mean one is better than the other. While Ableton is typically advertised for live performances, that doesn't mean it can't be used for film scoring. I chose to use cubase for this video since it's the DAW that I know best, and to quote Hans Zimmer "the best [DAW] is the one you're most familiar with"

Yes, Albeton Live was my first daw. I bought it because I didn't know what to buy It seemed easy and didn't have high computer demands like ProTools. It's super easy and the sounds are great, but it does crash. Also, a lot of Ableton's sounds and files are proprietary, you can't work with professionals that are high up in the ranks. Recently, I had a super powerful pc built to handle Cubase, but I am just learning Cubase. It's way different than Ableton....
