This is a CRUCIAL feature for film composing. People (including myself) have lost endless time, abandoned or butchered tracks to hit the cut because they didn't have or know this. I can think of at least a dozen uni tutors who would go "wait what???" hearing that. Thank you Dom!
I started scoring back in 1983. You just upped my game by a mountain’s worth. I really appreciate your knowledge and the way you present it. Thank you.
Just come across this video by accident. I'm in the middle of composing something for the Indie Film Music Contest 2023/4 and this will now enable me to hit my hit points accurately. Thank you @DomSigalas 🙂
Dom , you should DEFINITELY do a Media Composing Course 🙏 (NOT FOR FREE). I'm pretty sure many of us would really enjoy it. As always, thank you for constantly sharing great content! 🙌
Dom, you are my hero! lol. I just wish I knew about this technique when I put together an audio movie earlier this year... it would've saved me a tone of time. I watch a few guys in this space on UA-cam, but you're my favourite by far.... really informative and really pleasant to listen to. Thanks for all your hard work.
Just started using the time warp tool this week and it has already proved to be a god send! Understanding musical mode vs time mode is an absolute must, but once grasped it makes mixing midi, fixed tempo tracks and free tempo tracks a breeze. Cubase really has given us the ultimate tempo editing tool. Thanks Dom for the two explanation videos that have freed me from my (time) constraints 😂
Hi Dom, great video as usual! Super useful! I would be very interested if you did another one about creating tempo tracks on freely recorded music... Thank you for your great work! Art
Thanx Dom. Always scary using time warp on a project in my experience-there has always been tears. It was helpful to know what needs to be turned off or on & that linear mode is very important. Will have a go at this again now that you have shown us how it can be done, while still keeping your hair :)
Fantastic video, Dom! Additionally, a lot of folks aren't aware of how powerful this method is while used in tandem with Musical Mode for audio (along with the related algorithms, audio part editor features, etc.). Using those features in tandem makes picture conforms so much easier when audio is involved. A follow-up on that subject would be super valuable for media composers, if you ever have the time!
Trying to do this a few years ago while adding drums to a friend's demo I was producing (while not knowing about Timewarp) took ages. Thanks for including all the common pitfalls - I feel about ten times more confident in how to use tempo tools now!
There are some painful things in Cubase but Vari Audio and Time Warp are beyond of any competition! Some days ago I also tried an Expresion map and...found out that (with one annoying exception) it is very convenient and fast for using keyswitches. For me it became a signal to try using my KS based instruments in Cubase))
I spent forever looking for how to do this. I dug deeeeeeeeeep on the internet to learn it well before you made this. I like to set markers with a button on my keyboard and conduct in the beats like I would an orchestra. This is the number one reason I got Cubase for sure. It’s life changing
I've made every single possible mistake with the timewarp tool - I guess soon I'll be able to make a video about how to get oneself out of all kinds of messes and traps! Thanks, Dom!
Dom, Please do it! It is useful to manual adjusting the tempo track for a free click live performance. And how to adjust and optimize after the function of TEMPO DETECTION in cubase. (I prefer to import the tempo track, after detection in Melodyne standalone studio, it works better in poly, when i have a mixed track.)
Great to have your knowlegebase available Dom! Superb way of sharing and showing us ignorents! I would love to know more about timestreching and syncronization of off grid elements!! Really differcult to comprihende from manuals! Thanx! Ginn
im definitely going to use it now I've seen it. For my documentaries and films to match to hitpoints when I am using for example epidemic sound tracks. Thanks again Dom
Thanks again for an amazingly easy to understand video! I've been so confused as to what even is the function of the Timewarp Tool, as my previous understanding was that it's the same as Audiowarp.
Thank you Dom! I never used time warp tool until now! Also , video about using time warp with live perfomances would be great for me too. Thank you so much!
Please do make a video on how to use the Time Warp tool with audio freely recorded (without a click). Frequently I need to add midi tracks and/or audio tracks to such songs but have trouble matching bars and beats to the hitpoints in the original audio. Question: Could it help, before using Time Warp, to do a Tempo Detection and try to minimize to some extent the fluctuations in tempo by compressing the dynamics of the post-analysis tempo-change points in the tempo track? Thank you for all your fine teaching about Cubase!
Awesome Tool and video. Thanks Dom ! Most songs are recorded with a clic but sometimes, the clic ruins the expression of solo vocal performances. Some traditional songs (or classical pieces too) aren't played with a clic and the performer can linger on notes or accelerate. But it also makes it very difficult to record new layers (second voices, or instruments) over the solo performance. Would you use the warp tool in that specific case, to create a fine-tailored clic track ? Because I tried recording the same vocal songs over a clic and hit a dead end. I felt that it killed the expression and emotion..
@@DomSigalas Thank you so much for that. And for the crazy content you share through your channel. *fangirl mode on* I've spent my 1 month holiday away from my instruments and pc, so I've watched close to all your videos, and learned so much already. You rock ! *mode off* Can't wait to check out that video 👍
What are the problems that could arise from having decimal BPM because of this for example? How do you tell Cubase to only use whole BPM (like 115 insteade of 115.422)? :)
Hi Dom! Thank you very much for this video! Now I understand why I couldn't use the dozens of markers I put before scoring the Stargirl video... This will save me HOURS next time. I wish I had an expert like you among my friends 😅
Great vid! I've been using this tool for ages and I learned a few tricks, thanks! You should do a video on consolidating. Meaning, when you've written, even mixed a cue, and then you get a new cut of the same cue and all your hit points are missed and you need to start adjusting your music.
Oh, mate! This is a game-changing video for me! I always ‘score’ my videos with music that has been previously recorded either as royalty free music or original compositions. I’ve always used a bunch of jiggery-pokery to get the music to line up with the spoken content...it can take forever to get it right! I can already see this will give me back hours of my life! 😉 The other use case that I’ve bumped into lately is taking an acoustic piano track - with a loose tempo that changes with the song’s dynamics - and creating a remix with modern and retro hip hop instrumentation. Unfortunately, you’re about a week too late! 🤪 I’ve been manually creating tempo maps, then moving the markers to the right place, then moving around midi notes to land on the hit points. I think this emulates the live music scenario you’re talking about so it’s a ‘hell yes!’ from me on creating that tutorial! So thanks yet again, Dom! Always delivering value wrapped in a joy for the music. 👊
Wow he scares me when he says " It VERY!! IMPORTANT!!!" :) I think if I don't listen to him my computer will explode. But Dom's videos are always cool and full of great information thats " VERY IMPORTANT!!!" :)
Very nice Dom! YEs I'm very interested of other uses of the warp tool. I consider myself an advance Cubase user but this topic I have to really work at it. your way of presenting is great!
Oh, man! I'm so happy you showed us this before the end of the year. I'm about to start needing this pretty pretty bad soon-ish. Learning it AFTER I'm done would leave me ... "tearing the hair out of my head", as someone said recently haha! :D
Hey, thanks for the tutorial. I'm still not familiar with this feature. Can you please do a step by step video? From getting to right video format to dragging it in and so on...
Great Video! Would be interested to go more in depth i.e. - reverse engineering - you have already created elements of score with a tempo track and you want to make adjustments. Once a tempo is set, if time warp is activated and you try to implement between tempo change points, you get error message "No grid editing when tempo is ramped". This goes back to to your first instruction of determining all hit points in planning the score! It appears that Cubase will only allow warp editing to the right of the last tempo change. Am I missing something? Previously, I would break cues down into individual sessions but that is becomes a cue accounting job. Although not always practical, working on the whole film in one session is nice and being able to go in and make tempo changes would be cool. However, do realize that the computational algorithm is crazy!
Great video Dom! But just to clarify... at 15:11 I think you meant to say "Linear" mode, yes? Also, have you noticed how the Timecode in Supervision does not match the frame values indicated by the Cubase transport?
The time warp tool was the most intimidating tool when I didn't know how to use it properly, but now it is the most important tool that I use every time I have to compose for media. Dom your explanation of the tool is really amazing. I have a question and I would love to see how you go about the process for it. Imagine a scenario where you have done the music on an edit, and boom one day the director calls you and says he changed the entire edit. How would you tackle that? Any answers on this would be extremely welcome! Thanks again Dom, your videos are so clear and well crafted!
Thank you Ahmed! Aaah this is every composer’s nightmare but it almost always happens. What I do is I re-import the new cut and check which things changed. Then I use the Timewarp tool to readjust, maybe add some empty space using the tempo processing options. Or you can use Nuendo which has an excellent re-conform function that does this almost automatically for you and moves stuff around accordingly ;)
@@DomSigalas Thanks Dom! It is indeed the worst nightmare ever! I have been considering Nuendo as a post option for a very long time! But I use cubase for everything. I will indeed try this method as well because I always end up destroying my sessions! Thanks again Dom. You have really elevated my cubase knowledge!!
Hi Dom, another great video. I have tried to use the timewarp tool but had problems, your video explains it beautifully! Cheers Dave oh and yes please for the video on live performances.
The timewarp feature is what brought me back to Cubase from Logic. Yes, would like to see more videos on creating tempo tracks.
