Amy Rose is the current leading female character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series and has amassed a high number of appearances over the years. She's managed to stay relevant and adapt to any changes the series went through.
With that being said, she catches a bit of hate from a portion of the fanbase. This episode of Who Dat tries to pin-point what it is about Amy that garners such a negative response and attempts to offer a different viewpoint from the other side of the coin.

The main reason people don't like Amy is because everyone sees her as a "stalker". She's one of Sonic's best friends. She follows Sonic as much as Tails does.

BrolyLSSJ01 That's true some people don't take the time to understand the character like Amy rose they always assuming she's a stalker when she's really is sonic the hedgehog friend plus Tails followed sonic when they first met but Amy wasn't friends with sonic at a point of time just like tails. only difference between Tails and Amy is that Tails admire sonic while Amy loves Sonic.

You act like Sonic's the victim there (or anywhere, you don't know Sonic if you think he's oppressed by Amy or she's an actual harmful threat to him because if that's the case, he would have told her off, not deem her a friend, and fight against her a long time ago.) when he arguably deserved it, and the fact that it was played comically.
Personally, I struggle to understand why Amy gets so much negativity.. Sure, her wide-eyed infatuation with Sonic can be a bit cringy at times; aside from that though, I've always found her to be relatively harmless & inoffensive.

cause most people are blind to her character develoment in sa 1 she helps the bird find his family while sonic was looking for eggman amy picked up his slack by helping the animal somthing sonic use to do and in heroes helps cream and big find froggy and choa despite they could be anywhere and amy could say find a new frog and choa amy knows they mean a lot to big and cream , in brotherhood of darkness she made a school teaching young guys how to protecting themselves it saids it in the bio and last i can't believe i am saying this but in 06 when she said that i would choose sonic over the world it shows how much faith she has in sonic to save elise and hell even amy breaks her out before she kidnapped again. Amy is the hero but more of helping a community than focusing a big bad guy type of girl.

You guys have to be joking. Not only does supposed character go back and forth like pengullum, but her gimmick of being a fangirl got old fast. There are plenty of valid reasons to hate her.
What I always liked about Amy was that she has a cocky personality on par with Sonic.

actually like and find it notable that digi finds amy similar to nami since boom amy(especially in the descriptions for her being a researcher of ancient tablets) is kinda a mix between nami and nico robin(in fact despite the obvious parallels to dragonball, like shadow and super sonic, sonic is more closer to one piece with its idealism with sonic more closer to luffy than goku in terms of the lively, free personality he has.) with amy's boom counterpart being my favorite version of her since it shows more of her sister like interactions with tails,knuckles(sticking up to and outright threatening the people that tried to scam knuckles out of a new home in an episode where knuckles tried to find a home.),sticks and even befriending eggman.
i also like how both her and sonic have mutual affection for each other but its downplayed in focus and the romantic elements are subdued to a secret crush between them that feels more realistic by sonic standards and i love that the mainline games are bringing this part of her in(in lost world she never mentions her love toward sonic once & love in unleashed sonic is saddened by her not recognizing him as the werehog and at the end goes on a date with her as shown in black knight, which is also heartwarming since outside of all stars racing this was the last time we saw jason griffith and lisa ortiz as them. side-note i didn't think Lisa ortiz was a bad voice as amy just the direction wasn't good until the end.).
also i never thought about that, outside of jet and the Babylon rouges sonic really doesn't get annoyed or that much angry at foes with few exceptions when they go to far.
I think it's funny how defending Amy to the Sonic Fanbase is just like defending the Sonic series to the rest of the world.

I never found myself hating Amy. And her insane crush on Sonic? I always found it as being something that was just kinda there. It didn't serve a purpose and it was easy to ignore. But I really liked that she's cute, she doesn't hide it, and she's a mix between a girly-girl and a tomboy. She doesn't like to get dirty, but she won't hesitate to play with the big boys when the situations calls for it. And she's scarily strong too with a short temper and stubborn personality to boot. To the point that when Sonic isn't annoyed by her, he's afraid of her anger.
And not only is she somewhat of an older sister figure to Cream, but she can also be an older sister figure to Tails, stepping up for him when Sonic isn't around. In fact, in Sonic Riders, Amy gets quite steamed at Wave for insulting Tails' tech. And in the Sonic X anime, she has some dislike for Rouge for her teasing towards Tails.
I think its adorable that Amy gives Sonic a hug when he rescue her or when she follows him x3

I find it funny that you missed one of Amy's most crowning moments of the story, in Sonic Adventure 2 when she was the one that convinced Shadow to join up with the other heroes in the climax. It helps to highlight her kind and optimistic nature, and that she's a figure that even manages to get on the good side of 'evil' figures. Though maybe that views her more as an accessory to development than someone developing in her own right. Just my two cents on the matter.
+Renzokuken666 Mind you, I think the reason that was done was because he explicitly wanted to focus on CD and Adventure 1, but it's a fair point. She was the most prominent non-playable character in the game, save for maybe the Robotniks. Still, all that being said, there's arguments to be made that Amy was triggering off Shadow's memories of Maria... And that her introduction to the game was finding and glomping Shadow... On a prison island, of all places. Plus, yes it doesn't happen to change the mechanics, but she *is* held captive at gunpoint by Eggman, forcing Sonic into a sadistic choice. So there's another "gotta save her" moment.
+Renzokuken666 Wanna know something? I did actually mention it before i edited it out. It was only a very short throw-away line basically saying "she stopped Shadow from acting like a dickhead and convinced him to help save the world", but i removed it. It didn't dive too deep in to that part, mainly because it was Shadow's memory of Maria that convinced him to change, Amy only sort of re-jigged his memory to remember it. Because there wasn't much said on the topic so i just took the line out. But it definitely was there. I even left the footage in of when she was talking to Shadow during that part, lol.
Maybe i might bring it up again in the future if ever i review Shadow :)
Ya know, I really like people like you. People who don't pretend to be critical, objective or more important than they are, people who are honest with their feelings and just spill their heart out, fully aware of their own biases and knowing it isn't a problem. You didn't really come off as fanboyish or anything, but I think even if you did, I would still enjoy your videos very much because of that honesty combined with your editing skills and your ability to easily convey information/your opinions. I respect that very much : )

I appreciate that greatly! :) As for reviewing, i do try to keep a balance because even i can admit some of the characters who are my favourites have flaws. If i am to notice these flaws in my favourite characters then the least i can do is attempt to find something positive in a character i don't like, rather than just write them off. It's actually really interesting from a research and scripting point of view. For example, Big the Cat was a character i really didn't like at all, but after working on his episode and spending time with him i came away from that episode not minding the character as much as i did when the episode began. Doing this show not only allows me to present these things to the viewers, but in some cases i end up learning something from it myself.
Anywho, i'm rambling now, haha. Thank you for enjoying the show and deciding to stick around for the future! Cheers ~

Despite her minor appearances in Sonic Lost World, I loved how they used Amy in the game. She didn't show any obsession with Sonic, and was both affectionate, and doing her best to keep in touch with Sonic about saving the animals who were captured. Even Sonic treated her nicely in this game, which was fair, since Amy didn't give him any reason to cringe in this game. Heck, when Sonic thought Amy was dying, he showed some real concern, and got real upset. Sonic looked like he felt guilty for whatever happened, or will happen to Amy. I'm aware Knuckles was there as well, but Sonic was talking directly with Amy, which makes his response of sadness feel like it was mostly geared towards Amy's safety.
Even in the end, Sonic came back and said hi to Amy, and Amy didn't get all lovey dovey all over him. She just ran over and showed her appreciation for Sonic and Tails saving the animals. Even when Sonic decided to take a rest, she didn't try glomping him, it just looked like she was running over to lay in the grass near him, just like Tails and Knuckles were.
In my opinion, the best portrayal of Amy, and best interaction with Sonic and Amy were in both Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. In Zero Gravity, Amy had a more story driven role. It sucked that she for no reason written out of the last act of the game, until the final cutscene, but for each scene including her, I felt her portrayal was decent.
She was the main reason Jet the Hawk and Sonic bumped into each other again, due to Amy finding the arc of the cosmos artifact that Jet needed. Amy was a very cheery and helpful character in the game, and had an awesome scene where she showed some back bone to Storm the Albatross, after he chased her down, and cornered her. It was funny to see this little pink hedgehog go from helpless, to putting her foot down, and intimidating Storm.
Sonic also treated her well in the game. Instead of pushing her aside, or leaving her behind, he let her join alongside their mission to find out how to stop the malfunctioned security bots. Amy's role in this game was a much bigger improvement over her role in Sonic Riders. In Sonic Riders, she was treated terribly, in both the story, and especially with how Sonic treated her. It was nice to see Zero Gravity do a much better job with her inclusion. Too bad the same can't be said about Sonic Free Riders... Aw well, Free Riders didn't feel like a sequel anyways, it felt like a cheap spin off with a plot ripping off of the first Sonic Riders, and mixing it with the climax of Sonic Heroes.
Agreed I feel Amy is one of my favourite characters because she can be in the games with out a certain plot twist and it would still make sense example the only way knuckles can be important in the games is if the master emerald is stolen if he is in a game and the master emerald isn't stolen it doesn't make much sense for him to be there where as Amy can have objectives that have nothing to do with sonic like in sonic adventure and was part of arguably one of the best cutscenes in the sonic series when she influences shadow there is good people in the world
+SpongicX You forgot Sonic Chronicles The Dark Brotherhood, at first Amy says she's not interested in Sonic anymore and has a boyfriend named Dexter. She isn't obsessive with Sonic. Depending on what options you choose as Sonic if you been nice to Amy through points of the game,she'll ask him why he has been so nice to her. Sonic can reply "I'm nice to all of my friends", "I'm just saying that so you won't kill me", or "You deserve to be treated nicely, Amy". If you been nice to her throughout your adventure this leads to an extra scene at the end, when Amy admits her boyfriend, Dexter, is fake, and she asks Sonic if he cares for her. He can reply "yes" or "no".
You can basically create a romantic relationship with her, well more or less.
That doesn't sound like a romantic relationship as much as Amy again not giving Sonic a reason to be annoyed by her and him treating like he would any of his other friends because of it, and Sonic letting her know he cares about her. Which he obviously does. As a friend.

All of Amy's modern colors, besides her eye color and grey on the shoes, are actually colors of roses.
For those who wanna know what generally happened with Amy in the Archie comics, I can pretty much sum it up like the following. She lets go of Sonic for the most part so he can be with his comic love interest Sally Acorn, she forms Team Rose again with Cream and Blaze the Cat (helping the former move on from a pretty shattered childhood and the former to trust outsiders), and her evil alternate universe counterpart was a Yandere once again called Rosie The Rascal with a spiked hammer and was the best part of that whole arc. She was and remains awesome.
+JacksonJin wait, sorry. Something you said there really caught my attention, because i'm not in tune with Archie universe storyline. Did you just say that Cream in the Archie universe had a bad childhood? o_o You have my attention, please elaborate for me.
DiGi Valentine Well, she still had her mother Vanilla, and usually remained cheerful. But their family was among the regular villagers who were terrorized by Eggman and had their home destroyed. So Amy was the one who brought their family into Knothole (The base Sonic's crew used) and ended up bringing Cream along to check out a disturbance. Vanilla was even younger than most when Eggman's terror was at it's peak, and it's practically a miracle she turned out as happy as she did. (What with the regular threat of giant robot takeover, the whole Egg Grapes incident, and various other scares the Comic verse has had.)
+JacksonJin Wow, i didn't expect Archie to go so deep with their version of the events surrounding Cream. It's cool that they wrote all that stuff in though, it sounds like it fits neatly in to it.
I have old memories of the Cartoon show that used to air, and i remember the setting with Knothole and the Freedom Fighters etc, so i have a vague understanding of some of the things you've mentioned.
Pretty cool that they managed to include Cream and more importantly Vanilla in to all of that.

+DiGi Valentine Archie has it's moments with character development and backstory even to this day... (I especially love how they write Bunnie, and her interactions with other characters.) I wish I had more time to keep up with it. But as it is, I still just continue to horde the comics in my closet and hope to read them all one day. ^^;
I don't think anyone truly hates any character in the Sonic franchise including Amy and Big and all the others, I just think they hate it when Sega doesn't do anything with the characters and when they do it's not good!

She is definitely my favorite Sonic character and among my favorite characters in fiction in general, if not my favorite one, so I really appreciate this video and would love for there to be at least a few more videos like this. 🙂 It would also be great if Sega could portray her in an even better light so she will have a lot more fans than she already has, lessening the need for her to be defended in any way, and there eventually being a canon version of her that is older than 12 would be cool as well. Maybe there could be a story in which the main crew is at least 3 years older than they have been, possibly even 6 years older at some point. 😁

I think I even remember a page in the Archie Comics where Sonic and Sally were on a date and everyone kept bugging them, Amy actually helped them get away from the people saying "Sonics happiness is more important than her dating him"

I think Amy has the potential to be one of my favourite characters. Some minor changes would really bring me around. I'm going to put them here in list format because I've just gotten the internet back and can afford to be decadent.
- First off, the love-sickness. I think when it's done without any self-awareness it's kind of grating, but I love it in Sonic Adventure (and STC) where she seems to be totally aware of the fact that she's winding Sonic up. That shit's hilarious.
- Second, design. Like you say, her design is pretty sweet, and when she's drawn like 11.09, with the anorak and the spiky hair I really dig it. I just wish that they would give her a longer skirt. Not gonna go too far into that, y'know? But I wake up in the morning, and I think to myself, "see if I DON'T see a 12-year-old hedgehog's knickers? I will consider today a success." Y'know? I'm willing to take her word on the whole "sphinx" situation.
That was a shorter list than I imagined. Anyway, yeah, Amy. Not the worst.

+ShayMay Thanks for watching, mate! :) Yeah, i did hear your opinions on Amy in your Sonic Spitball video, which was one of the things that was intriguing to me. I knew we had a few differences of opinion with her so i was curious to see how you would take this episode of Who Dat.
Thankfully we didn't end up facing off in a duel bathed in blood and flames over it ...which is how most debates over Sonic characters tend to end up as. You and me could change the world, you know.

Never did I think I would run into a UA-cam video defending the Sonic franchise, let alone one defending one of its most controversial characters. But, seriously, thank you so much for this video! :D It's about time someone has addressed Amy's "hatedom" (okay many people have already done that lol But you're the first one to do so on UA-cam, I think)!
Yeah, Amy has suffered greatly from bad writing but she HAS been written good in the past and it seems SEGA is finally making forward attempts to redeem her character. Though I personally hope they don't do that by erasing her love for Sonic completely, or having her keep it a strictly hidden secret of hers a la her Boom counterpart, because that was never the problem. The problem with that trait was when it consumed her character, making it the only thing about her, and when further bad writing turned it into an unhealthy thing *coughSonicBattlecough* Now Amy with a loud but healthy affection for Sonic, an open crush if you will, is a much better compromise.
I'm sorry for asking this if you're not the type to take "requests" but would you PLEASE be willing to do a video on Cream the Rabbit in the future? ^^; She's an over-hated Sonic character who deserves more recognition, especially since she was once something of a major character! Seriously, her "background role" is a freaking crime and I absolutely hate how she's no longer Amy's "sidekick"! Like, come on, Cream is very beneficial to Amy's character and Cream has potential to be more of a character, why would they do this!?
KaoticKanine the thing with cream is not that people hates her , is that she doesn't add anything to the series , sega needs to work strictly on her and not just show her as another minor character .
To be honest, I think Cream already adds to the series with her initial role as Amy's "sidekick", which opens many possibilities for Amy's character, and bringing a more "innocent" outlook to the franchise. But it is true that there's not much else to Cream, especially compared to the other characters >.>
When there is one thing to say to cream than that she has for the franchise a very unique character the only ones that has similar characters were Tikal and Maria and there both dead.
Also I would love to see her in a dialog with eggman nega because this 2 characters are at the same time the most politest characters in the series but also the most polar opposite ones and both could also need a bit more development.

One thing I really like about Amy is that unlike other fangirl characters, she never once mentions Sonic's looks. She always talks about him being a hero. I think even if Sonic was a little chubby and wore glasses, she'd still like him the same as long as he's still the hero.

I really liked Amy as a character. Before Sonic Rush anyway. And recent games are getting her back on track to making her likable again. Amy's portrayal in Lost World it was a nice change of direction for her character, reverting her back to her original characterization. Amy started the series as a girl who saw Sonic as her idol and her crush was more of harmless affection and never amounted to anything but a harmless crush. When she got bigger role expansion of Sonic Adventure despite her story not directly connecting with anyone it mainly tries focusing on developing her. When she sees Sonic her first response? A single "my Hero" crush followed with a "Long time no see" Amy interacted with Sonic as a normal friend just coming across another friend who hasn't seen each other in a while and her fantasizing about Sonic was because of the sense of Adventure he brought with him, giving more justification for Amy's crush. And her moments with Sonic were Sonic being annoyed at her, but her antics didn't come off as aggressive or obsessive she was just an overly curious girl who mistakenly saw Twinkle Park as a "couples thing".. lol From there she cites to protect the bird and help it find its way home and she sought out her own independence so she could prove to Sonic she's good enough, it was by far Amy's best character moment and showcases her as an innocent girl with a sense of Adventure. And that scene where she defends Gamma from Sonic was one of her best moments, showcasing while she loved Sonic she would never come at the expense of her friends. She even develops out of her damsel state from Sonic CD by killing her captor Zero.
In Sonic Adventure 2, while a downgrade in her independence she still remained what she was before, though just relagated to a supporting role. Yeah she fawned over Sonic more than before, but they don't take up her character and the scene in jail when she used the "Marriage" card was an obvious joke presented as just casual teasing, unlike most later games Amy didn't force it on Sonic with aggression, it was a casual joke. From there on out she was trying to find her place in the group, being left out of missions etc. This is confirmed when she states "You always leave me behind and have all the fun" indicating all she wanted was a sense of importance in the group. And her message too Shadow in the end made it more special because of that. Sonic even respects her more in the end with the "take care of yourself line" and after Shadow dies.
Sonic Heroes, yeah this takes a more aggressive approach to Amy''s affection toward Sonic. However what saves her is her interactions with Cream & Big and her new leadership role. While Sonic is her goal, its clear her independence from Adventure comes full force here. She's on a urge to find Sonic, but she isn't above helping her friends either and shows that she helps them first, and when she does help them her finding Sonic was simply her reward in the end. And it never felt as if her crush was obsession, as she still had her layers that made her likable. Plus that scene where she motivates Cream/Big during Hang Castle to be strong and find their friends shows her full confidence. Top this off with her similar personality traits to Sonic himself (Impaitent, Short tempered, Adventurous) and this is what made Amy a great character. Sadly after Sonic Heroes things went downhill for Amy.
In Sonic Rush her innocent affection and her admiring Sonic as an idol was completely gone and in this game she develops an obsessive crush where she thinks Blaze likes him upon first interaction and she downright goes aggressive toward Cream with implied punishment on Cream with her Hammer offscreen. This goes against Amy/Cream's friendship and showcases Amy as an aggressive stalker. Sonic Battle is no better, where her only sense of being stronger is that Sonic will notice her, rather than her wanting Sonic to admire her for being strong. You then have Sonic Rivals, Advance 3, Riders, Generations and especially Free Riders where her personality is a completely 180. Rather than being a girl who admires Sonic and has a crush on him, she evolved into a Aggressive stalker who only cares about Sonic at the expense of everyone else, even her friends are left in the dust as a result. Watching Amy in Free Riders is awful! She's so antagonistic, ignores Cream and treats Vector so terribly while her obsession with Sonic is unhealthy and aggressive.
Unleashed, Riders Zero Gravity and Lost World where the only games that had her in a somewhat positive light. As Unleashed she has more faith in Sonic and her interaction is more innocent than aggressive. As far as hatred goes I agree it's blown way out of porportion, even if I can see why they may dislike her. And her Damsel claim makes no sense. She's only a damsel in Sonic CD, Rivals, Generations, Unleashed and Adventure 2. Aside from that other Sonic characters are Damsels either more or in the same light as Amy. How many times as Sonic saved Tails? Especially in recent games where he does nothing but provide exposition. Sonic Rivals, Adventure, Unleashed, Generations, Advance 2 etc Tails is a Damsel who needs saving. Everyone aside Shadow and Silver are damsels in Generations. Even Knuckles is a damsel in Advance 2, Sonic Rivals 2 and Generations. Rouge the Bat? Adventure 2, Sonic 06, Sonic Rivals, Sonic Generations, Sonic Rivals 2.

As kid my intro to her was Sonic Advance, same for knuckles, when I was very young I watched the old Sonic Cartoon a little so I knew Sonic and Tales. So when Amy and Knuckles showed up in Sonic Advance all I had to go by was design and I loved both. Now, after watching Sonic X I was surprised to see how much Amy likes Sonic. I never had an issue with it because she does have other traits. She is very positive thinking, she has a short temper, and has this upper class vibe to her. I always saw her love of Sonic was comedic relief but there are moments I noticed in Sonic X where Sonic finds her endearing. I mean, she likes him and she probably has at least an idea that he likes her back and that’s why she pushes him so hard. Would be nice to see it pay off. Lol
Great video. Amy is my favorite character. I've never had an issue with her. She's young in love, but also tough, caring, sassy, optimistic, clever and independent. To me, her love for Sonic is cute and her obsession is comical. Amy genuinely cares about Sonic, yet has a mind of her own, so I don't view her as a fangirl. Love can make one act out in sometimes the most peculiar ways. Besides, Sonic still considers her a friend and cares about her, so the heavy hate she gets bewilders me sometimes.
Next time someone asks me why I like Amy, I'm just gonna show them this video. :) It's very well done.

Amy was a part of some of my favorite moments in Sonic X.
I actually adore Amy! She was my first favorite character in Sonic games! I had grown up with the original Genesis games, and while I enjoyed them, the lack of voice acting made it hard to really latch on to a character. So when I got back into Sonic in the 3D games, I immediately liked Amy because of how cute she was, and the fact that there was finally a girl character for me to play as with my friends(you know how it is when you're a kid and most of your favorite characters are the same gender as you, until you grow up and start liking characters for other reasons)! I also loved playing as Amy in the Sonic Advance games! Rouge and Tails would later replace Amy as me and my friends favorite characters when Adventure 2 came out because of how cool and adorable they were respectively. But I still will always love Amy!
And by lack of voice acting, I mean lack of dialogue. I was pretty young when the Genesis games came out, so the subtleties of the character establishing scenes wasn't enough to make a big impact on me.

Love the video. A thing I never understood is why Amy is considered "controversial". I mean, she is not exactly a character that leads to a tonal shift like Shadow or Silver did so many years ago in order to accomodate the stories. If anything I think Amy fits perfectly within the franchise's original tone, adding some charm and cuteness to it, along with what is already mentioned about how she is that one character that raises morale in others by believing in them, helping bring the best of everyone which is a nice contrast to Sonic's "I believe in my self because I can do things". Maybe the controversy has more to do with her being a love interest, given how in fiction female characters are usually judged more harshly than males... but even then I think ot's just a harmless thing and the fact that she actually tries her best to win Sonic's heart without ever giving up is something that really makes me feel a genuine sympathy for Amy. Not to mention that I think it serves both as a way to distinguish her dynamic with Sonic from the one he has with Tails (would be pretty redundant if Amy were to simply be another friend) as well as what is pretty much the reason why Amy has grown stronger over the years, no longer being the defenseless little kid from CD. Personally, the only real problem that I believe stands in the way of Amy continuing to grow as a character and show what she can do is something that hardly has anything to do with the character itself but rather it's more of a thing about how Sonic Team handles the cast of characters, which currently is being focused solely on Tails and Knuckles.

Amy has been my childhood hero since I was six or seven. I even put the name Amy at the end my surname at a test paper once! oh the good old dayys
For me Amy was the character that got me interested in sonic, there weren’t many other female characters in the games that I had at the time and being able to play as Amy was great. she’s also a lot stronger them most people think, in sonic X she took down the egg carrier alone and while it was more done in a gag sense it was still a good display of her power level.

I've loved her since her debut and I was in diapers. Same with Chun-Li, and Princess Peach. And right along with them, she's become one my top 3 favorite fictional characters of all time.
I do want to see her in more games where she has a main role of her own. Any game is fine as long as she's playable a lot in it. I do want a great Sonic game again, I still keep hope alive for a Sonic Adventure 3 with everything that made 2 amazing. Chao Gardens and all. Just give Amy a main major, playable role and I'm good.

Amy has always been one of my favorite characters in the Sonic Universe. Dead ass when I got Sonic Heroes, I played Team Rose as my team for multiplayer all the freaking time.
Awesome job with the video! Amy is actually my second favorite female Sonic character, and you somehow made me like her to the point of her being on the same level as Blaze, my first favorite! It really seems that she's getting less dependent on Sonic in the games and the TV show really shows that too.
Thank you for not giving up on the video, it was a really good analysis on the character I loved as a kid. As an adult, I haven't found much to like about her when I replayed Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. Now I remembered why I liked Amy so much.

You know, I used to be on the 'Hate Amy' bandwagon when I was a dumb kid, but I just stopped once I grew a conscience.
But through this video, you effectively moved my opinion of Amy Rose from neutral to positive. When you take away her infatuation for Sonic, you truly have a character who, in my opinion, is more worth hanging around than Sonic. Thanks for getting me the rest of the way!
I actually really love Amy as a character, mostly due to her relationship with Sonic as a fangirl stalker.
Like you mentioned, she creates the dichotomy with Sonic to where we get a visceral example of Sonic being a celebrity. Tails was originally introduced with this same concept, where he was a fan _boy_ stalker instead of a fan _girl_.
While Tails has gone from that to best friends and sidekick, Amy has and continues to go from crazy fangirl to "Friend with a crush on the main character" and I guess that suites her just fine.
Oddly enough, I rather like how she is handled in Sonic Boom cartoon in this regard.

If you guys start saying that Sonic and Elise's relationship was gross, you guys do realize that Sonic was meant to have a human Girlfriend when he debuted, right? And back to Elise, yes she got kidnapped a lot, but she doesn't have any formal combat training. And she also gave herself up to save her people and she escaped just as she met Amy.
I will agree though that her personality could use some work, but from that she had the makings of a good character.

Amy's a really good character when she's written correctly. I loved her most in the Adventure era and Classic era and I'm starting to like her most recent appearances (Lost World Forces). I don't know if you've seen Sonic Dissected, but they have a really good episode all about Amy and her character arc from Sonic CD to Adventure 2. I think it's episode 4. I recommend checking it out if you love Ms. Rose.

Just found this channel and been working through the archive. Love the show, even if sometimes I don't feel the same ways about some of the characters. Gotta give you props for even trying to find something good about Big though. Dude doesn't even look like a Cat.
Anyways, just wanted to chime in that I'm kind of an Amy fan too. Never really got into her in the Sonic CD days, but its hard not to love the sassy new version especially on the occasions she's allowed to shine on her own. Or well, at least smack down evil robots with a giant squeaky mallet.

I always like how unique she is in some of the 2D games, no offense to other characters (I'm a huge fan of Tails & Knux) but a lot of them were just like Sonic with a different ability were she had her style with her hammer and destroys bosses with ease.

I've always liked Amy as a character, and I think her role in the series is an important one. It's unfortunate then, that she's been relegated to side character in a lot of recent games... sure she's an important side character, but she is one nonetheless, basically I just want her to be playable more often. She is one of the few female characters in the series that takes a truly active role. Sure, we have Blaze and Rouge, but we haven't seen either of them do anything of any real note in years. Which gives her an even more important role as a female character.
I suppose a character that I have similar feeling about fan reaction to as you do Amy is Jet the Hawk. People often comment on his voice, and how he's a cocky jerk who's only claim to fame is his use of extreme gear, not being able to move that fast on his own. However among Sonic rivals, I think those very aspects of his character give him a very unique flavor. Jet's lack of any kind of super powers like the rest of the cast makes him stand out, where Shadow has his chaos abilities, Knuckles has his immense strength and connection to the master emerald, and Metal Sonic is... a robot. Jet on the other hand relies entirely on his extreme gear, skills that he wasn't born with, but rather, he had to earn. He's one of the few characters who truly earned his abilities and skills. A lot of people also comment on his personality "he's a jerk, he's super arrogant!" Well I mean... yeah, of course he is. From what I can tell from his character, he probably spent most of his life with people telling him he's the best, he never lost races, and was an accomplished treasure hunter and the leader of a famed mercenary group. Yeah, he's arrogant, that's going to happen. And that again makes him unique among, not just Sonic's rivals, but also the cast as a whole.
So many of the characters are optimistic, friendly types, who are kind, and always willing to lend a hand. Even Shadow, despite the whole "badass" persona is very much a character who, more than most, is about friendship. Jet on the other hand is a prick, he's arrogant, and his main focus is on himself. It makes him stand out, and makes him a great counter to Sonic's optimistic, good guy persona. But even with that said, Jet has had steady character growth with each of his major appearances.
- In the first riders, he's a cocky douche who looks down on Sonic. And again, that makes sense. Jet doesn't just think he's the best, he knows it. So when this cheery hedgehog guy comes in acting like he's so fast, well honestly, it almost seems to me that Jet takes offense to this. He's trained all his life, and now this laid back hero type is coming in with all of this confidence. But we also see another side to his character after he loses his second race with Sonic. We see that, sure, he isn't happy, but doesn't complain, he lost and he knows it. And when he thinks he's being pittied, his pride doesn't allow him to accept it. However at the end, after the whole... genie thing... he seems to have a new found respect for Sonic, and even seems excited at the idea of a re-match.
- In Zero Gravity, he meets up with Sonic again, but there's a clear difference in his attitude. When they first properly met in the original, Jet started with an insult, he stood above him on a tree branch mocking him. However, when they meet in ZG, not only does he stand on equal footing to him, but he opens with a challenge. After his defeat in the original game, he's a little bit humbled, when he suddenly realizes he might not be the best. Now, Sonic is no longer something under him, but rather an equal, a challenge to surmount. He also clearly has developed a level of respect for him.
- And then came free Riders. Jet acts towards Sonic like he did ZG, with a level of respect, talking to him as an equal, even when loses in team Hero's story, he doesn't complain, he just promises that next time will be different. But we also see a difference in how he treats the other Rouges. Unlike in previous games where he clearly has very little patience for Wave and Storm's bickering, he seems a whole lot more calm when they start acting up. Again, his previous encounters with Sonic have perhaps humbled him, and given him new perspective. And yeah, he's still a jerk, but these kind of personality changes don't happen over night. In the same way that Amy got less clingy to Sonic as the series has progressed, I hope the same too will happen with Jet.
And coming back to that no powers thing. He really does speak to his determination and refusal to quit when he, despite not having super powers, is willing to challenge someone who can break the sound barrier by running to a race. He's a character, that despite the obstacle, will still strive to push past it, even if the obstacle itself seems insurmountable. If Sonic, as a character, is often about being the best you can be, than Jet personifies that goal of bettering yourself, despite existing in a world with super powers, Jet, someone with none, still opts to compete with those who have this natural advantage, and manages to hold his own.
I also think his design is great. Firstly, he's green with blue eyes, which makes him a clear opposite, simply on a visual level, to Sonic's blue with green eyes. He is mostly a light green, with dark green highlights, which has colors flow together better than if another colors was added. And then his red boots and glove... wrist... things. The red serves to break things up just a little, and gets across that passion for being the very best. And really, in general... I just think he looks cool.
Wow... that went on way longer than I intended... and I really managed to get off topic there didn't I? *Ahem* Uh... anyway, great episode, I'm new to your show, but from what I've seen this is one of my favorite episodes, I look forward to seeing more from you man.

Ya know I never really hated or loved Amy I was more or less indifferent to her. It wasn't until recently where I started to become very found of her character outside of having a crush on Sonic. I looked at her in a similar light to you and I'm glad you shared that in this video.

I like Amy as a character. She's obnoxious and a bit single minded but she means the best and is good at seeing the good things in people who don't let themselves be the best they can be.
I really like this video. I think it's important to see Amy Rose in a different light, and i appreciate how you brought out her personality without the tint of her crush on Sonic marring it. However, it would have been nice to point out how her interaction with Sonic isnt as bad as people make it out to be. She might be annoying at times, yes, but I think Sonic considers her a very good friend if nothing else.

I thing you should have also mention that she has a massiv desire for adventures likes when she describes her normal day live as boring compared to the time with sonic or when she just because she wants so with out even knowing that sonic would participate joint eggmans Extrem gear tournament in Riders.
She also not just loves sonic but also Admires him and his live style that she wished she could make her own. This is actually something she shares with tails but unlike tails how was gifted with an insane IQ of 300 and all the spezial ability's with his unique physiologic allows him like flying and keep up with sonic with earned Tails sonic's respect and is the original reason he even allowed him to take along. So amy was by both Sonic and Tails often treated like a weakling some one not strong enough to take care of her self in dangerous situations and because of this shouldn't join them on there adventures with lead to Amy actually to prove to them that she can keep up with there live style stared to train her ass off until she has gone form the Weak girl in CD to someone that has the power and confides in her self to just attack an Eggman base on her own to save her best friend cream.
One thing I've always loved about Amy is that, as you said, she doesn't have innate powers like Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, and Blaze. Nor Physical traits and enhanced intellect like Tails to make herself stand out and get by. She actually had to work and train up her speed and fighting skills, something she's still referred to doing. And through this, she's able to keep up with and beat some of the core members of Team Sonic, all without powers and only having a magic hammer and her own skills.
I have no real strong feelings about Amy Rose. But honestly, you hit the hammer on the nail. Throughout playing the Sonic series and watched the animated cartoons, I've never really had a problem with Amy. She can be a bit cringy, yes, but I've never really minded that. She feminine, but also a bit of a badass, which reminded me a bit of Bunnie Rabbot from the Sonic animated show/cartoons. She got a nice visual design, and her personality fits it.
I have a little soft spot for Amy, but I would hardly call myself a fan of her. She's pretty damn good design, and as long as they tone down the Sonic Obsession in newer titles, I would gladly have her back.

This more refreshing than you could possibly know. Like you I can see where some of the criticism for Amy comes from. I too would like to see more from her (and really the Sonic cast as a whole), however as is, she remains one of my favorites. Was on board with this as soon as I saw the thumbnail and really you've only gone and made me appreciate her more. Been digging these videos man really and truly. Keep up the excellent work bruv.
