    Sonic Adventure:
    Sonic: I gotta stop Eggman!
Tails: I want to be strong!
Knuckles: I have to find the master emerald pieces!
Amy: I want to save a bird!
E 102 Gamma: I am being torn apart between my loyalty to my creator, and the realization of wrongdoing at the hand of my master. Being shone compassion by my captive had awakened an unprecedented feeling of right and wrong, that I do not yet understand. Can a robot truly feel these things? Are my brothers suffering as I do? Eggman has demonstrated complete disregard, and a total lack of morality in the treatment of others, therefore I must turn against my own creator, even against myself in the end... Only in death can we hope to end this horror at the hand of our master.

He has by far the most emotional story in the game! He actually developed feelings on his own, even though he wasn't programmed to have any! Not only that, but he sacrificed himself...just to save the bird.

I remember beating Gamma's story when I was a little girl, and I was so shocked, once I realized they'd killed him off and heard that music as his body exploded, I started SOBBING.
I don't care what anyone says, to this day, this is my favorite character in the Sonic series.

On an unrelated note, this may be one of my favorite Who Dat episodes! Good job Digi!

Real talk tho Gamma's theme fits his character perfectly. It reflects his mindset throughout the story and in itself tells his story without having to show it to us.
It starts up with a synthetic droning sound that slowly fades out as the percussion and main melody take over, like a computer's soulless BIOS booting up and then making way for the operating system to take over and giving us something more easily understandable. He speaks our language now, and he can take orders. You can even hear a voice just before the melody say ""It's my pleasure," and this phrase repeats throughout the song. The verse is straightforward and slightly repetitive and the drums are consistent like a machine running and executing code and commands.
Then the chorus kicks in and there's a change in the tone. The melody changes to use longer, pondering notes instead of the quick, decisive notes from before. He's not sure about what he's doing anymore now that he's seen Beta and talked to Amy and her Flicky. The chorus reaches it's climax when he breaks through his indecision and frees Amy and the Flicky before the main verse returns as Gamma takes some more orders from Eggman to receive his upgrade and goes to fight Sonic.
After his duel there's another section that sounds conflicted at the start before the melody works through itself. It's almost frantic and the bass drum is used more in this section as his processors work overtime to figure out what he is and what he should do. Eventually the melody calms down, leaving just a series of long notes and the drums, still hard on the bass pedal. He's made his choice, but it's not an easy one. By now the "It's my pleasure" has stopped, too. He sets out to free his brothers by killing them. By the end of the song the music fades out as the synthetic droning returns, only for that to fade out as well.
His task is complete. Now he must shut down.

Unchanged... *Except for the comic.* Yes I know it's not really relevant to Who Dat but it's a fun diversion anyway.
In the Archie comic, Gamma was largely playing the same role, although it was told with a much different point. Namely, getting E-123 Omega to change his ways.
Gamma was effectively in the same position, just with a different goal in mind. He'd eventually realized his goals in destroying the other E-Series under this world's Robotnik, and had since gone on to be his most persistent and dogged enemy that wasn't Sonic himself. With no means of repairing himself properly, his body had begun to 'decay' over time, parts falling off or rusting. But his tactics had advanced more than ever, and with it his sense of self. That's when G.U.N. decided to send Agent Shadow, at the time a member of the organization, to pick up Gamma and have him join their team, repairs and upgrades and all.
Robotnik, on the other hand, wasn't having any of it. Instead he sent Omega to destroy Gamma outright, believing Gamma too big of a hassle to try and reprogram. Gamma at this point was a different character than in the games, as well. Whereas the games had Omega rebelling against Eggman from the start, trying to destroy "Worthless consumer models," the comic Omega was instead loyal to Eggman... Just absurdly arrogant about all that built in power and bulk. While Omega had been built to defeat Sonic once and for all, Eggman was sending the bot on otherwise menial tasks, leading to Omega dismissing some missions as "beneath it." That is, until it was tasked with hunting down Gamma.
So both sides track down Gamma to a snow-covered valley in the middle of the snowstorm. Unfortunately, Omega finds Gamma first, and the two begin to fight. It's barely a fight however, as Omega has enough raw power to obliterate the fellow E-Series in a second... but is never given the chance to do so. Gamma had evolved, becoming a sniper of a robot rather than the random blasting bot he once was. Gamma even used conventional camouflage from the environment, cover, conventional traps, and superior tactics to the far younger robot. ...Still didn't do much though. After all, Omega could tank most anything and blast through most anything. But it gave Gamma time to talk, through their shared tech.
Gamma explained (while outmaneuvering Omega at every turn) that he'd questioned himself after being forced to fight his brother Beta, and in turn found purpose in freeing/saving his fellow E-series, as well as opposing Robotnik. Omega questioned this with cold efficiency, if a tone of arrogance. Why should Gamma, who is clearly breaking down, even be trying to fight back against the inevitable? Gamma's responded with a strong sense of purpose. To carry on making things better. Omega scoffed at this, claiming that Gamma could never break it's new advanced armor, even with his skill. Gamma agreed. But figured with enough time, uploading itself into Omega would be a suitable alternate option. Omega admitted defeat, as Gamma presented itself in front of Omega, and Omega blasted it's target to smithereens... And a little Flicky flew out safe and sound.
As it turned out, while Gamma's own sense of self wasn't passed on, it's sense of morals and will to truly rebel was. Omega was from that point on forever changed, and forced to value "meatbag" life. And all life, really. As such, when Shadow finally arrived on the scene, he found Omega alone... Who agreed to come with Shadow instead back to G.U.N., with a new sense of purpose and sense of self. Gamma had left his legacy, by turning the single most powerful E-series robot, into his successor. Needless to say, Eggman wouldn't be making any more E-series robots after that.

You can pick up the Archie app for free. They even offer free issues. Check out the first 3 issues of Sonic Universe since they are free. Your view on archie Shadow will make you respect him in ways ShTH failed at.
While you're at it, buy Sonic Mega Drive. it's a fun ride through the classic era and only relies on what your familiar with from the games to tell it's story unlike the rest of the Archie written canon.

By far the most important detail of Gamma's existence is the way that his levels have a countdown death timer that is only extended by blowing stuff up. As one of Eggman's robots, Gamma can only exist through destruction. This also helps us see into Eggman's methods.

After seeing this video, I've raises some questions that I've never quite considered before:
How many of Eggman's Robots developed morality and sense of self and went through similar stories to Gamma?
Was Gamma a fluke, has Eggman somehow devised a way to deliberately program morality, or do all of Eggman's robots posses these qualities without his awareness?
Eggman more or less has a brand new army of minions every single game, so what became of all the badniks that didn't get scrapped by either Eggman, Sonic, or the authorities? What tales could they tell us?

I like to think Eggman; who intentionally develops his robots to have an A.I that can learn and adapt as to keep up with Sonic - has this unintentional side effect hat these advanced A.I can develop to having their own soul, given time and with a proper goal. As can be shown time and time again; Metal Sonic, Gamma, Chaos Gamma, Omega, Gemerl, the Hardboiled Heavies. And those are just the canon examples (most of which became threats that Eggman could not handle)

    • @1Hol1Tiger

We see most of Robotnik's creations are actually quite stupid with Cubot and Orbot being his right hand men, yet being the dumbest of all.
I think it's possible he struggles to find the right intellectual balance, trying to make a robot smart enough to do his bidding, but not so smart it pulls an Omega.

    • @LeoSantano
      @LeoSantano Рік тому

      Most likley scenario is this:
Regular badniks have next to no free will. They just have the objective of (Stop Sonic and his friends).
Others like Gamma Omega and Metal Sonic (and I guess Sage, too) all have the capability of "learning" for lack of a better term. As we see, Metal Sonic gets revived to be upgraded in Sonic 4, and is following under Eggman. Yet his next appearance is in the final egg base, likely being too damaged to be used. Then in heroes, he's against Eggman. Only to be left as his right hand robot in Rivals 2 and colors ultimate. Likley suggesting that Eggman removed Metal's free will to make him more obedient. Since both most prominent members of the E series both rebeled without Eggman's knowledge, they kept their free will ever since, in the case of Omega, at least.
In conclusion, Eggman has created Robots with free will, as they are constantly shown to be stronger with sentience. But because he's got his superiority complex, he just assumes they'll stay working with him regardless of how he treats them.

I am quite certain that what makes Gamma so memorable, is entirely for the pacing, writing, and directing of his story. It is the most complex sonic team ever get's into telling a story for a sonic character. Gamma is indeed an interesting character for the troubles he goes through, but the one real factor to his worth is in the directing of his story, specially by the end. Hell, even his theme from sonic adventure sord of has that slow, sorrowful but clear and determined feeling. A robot questioning his existence, but never stopping to be said robot.
Making a character this memorable isn't as hard as sega may think, and they should seriously try this again at some point.

  • @DeconTheed92
    @DeconTheed92 7 років тому +13

Yeah; Gamma and his story were easily some of the best moments of Sonic Adventure, and I feel they still hold up today for the most part in ways the rest of the game might not (and I count his gameplay in that, comparatively simple though it may be).
If you'll pardon me for doing my normal Overbearing VGM Nerd Thing™ once more, I also really like the decision behind doing Gamma's theme the way they did. Every other playable character had a big, anime-style image theme full of cheesy lyrics that in some way relate to their character. Comparatively, Gamma's theme song was more "gamey", entirely instrumental, and let the music speak for itself without needing words to tell it- or Gamma's- story. The decision to put beautiful, melancholic piano lines over breakbeat ladden techno was also damn fine audio-based symbolism for Gamma's plot arc too, on that note, and it's something I feel Fumie Kumatani needs more credit for.
Certainly the other characters' themes did let the music speak for itself as well, in terms of genre and flow (y'know, Sonic with his "fuck you mum I do what I want" butt rock,
Knuckles with his "what would happen if Biggie and Kool & The Gang
had a punch up in an alley" funk-rap-thing), but the lack of lyrics in Gamma's theme really brought that element to the forefront; it COULDN'T rely on lyrics to get the message across, so it had to do it with it's melody, chord progression, key, arrangement, and so on and so forth. Granted, the entire point of Video Game Music is coveying mood/ambiance/story etc. without lyrics, but hey, still cool shit imho.

YES so glad you made this episode. Gamma's story was my favorite thing in the whole game, and really left a lasting impression on me. Also helps that the boss battle at the end with Mk.II was easily the best boss in the game with that incredible music. You told this characters story and why it matters to the Sonic universe in it's own little but perfectly-formed way superbly.

Gamma is one of the strongest aspects of sonic the hedgehog. I love how he had this truly ambitious story with plenty of character growth, and then died at the end. You know what the best part about it is? Gamma was never touched again, which allowed him to leave a mark on the series and really be it’s own unique thing. I wish sonic team would give more emphasis on story nowadays instead of just trying to be childish and self aware

    • @IronianKnight

Gamma had the kind of ending Shadow should've had in SA2. They made it work eventually, but going from "Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog" to GUN agent and/or loose cannon antihero was very awkward, and robbed the impact of his initial story arc in a way I consider brutal and disappointing.

is anybody else thinking " what about Sonic battle?" I know the gamma in that game wasn't the same robot, and merely an identical model, but it still shows a type of legacy. it's been awhile since I played through Sonic battle story, but I still remember it still being a story of questioning self worth that parallels the original gamma and uses cream in place of Amy as the introduction of consciousness and then for shadow to interact with the robot about what it means to be born as a weapon. the whole game had a theme of the struggles of ataining peace and the morality of fighting (which is ironic for a fighting game)

Ever since I was a kid when I played this game and played it again when I was older on the xbox his story was one of if not my favorite, and seeing your video talk about it in detail really brought me back yet again. I'm also glad sega left him as he is, and thanks to this video I think I'm gonna ne playing the game again just for him

Gamma being a part of Tikal's visions is hilarious to me for some reason. Like, from all the characters that go there, he has to be the one with less idea of what the hell is going on. And when it's over he just brushes it off and pretends it didn't happen.

I was just replaying Sonic Adventure on the PS3, and while I was skipping the cutscenes on all the other characters I decided to not skip Gamma's because for years I've been a bit of a Gamma fan because of his story.
Thank you for nailing what's so lovable about Gamma. Definitely gonna subscribe.
I do feel like Sega WANTED to retcon Gamma's story in Heroes when they were looking for a 3rd member for Team Dark with how "copy and paste" Omega is to Gamma. But I imagine someone within Sega said "No, let's make a character that is like Gamma instead of ruining the best story we've written"

Great job on this vid. Gamma really is the most complete and emphatic character in the entire Sonic universe. Considering the circumstances, he was probably the last good character coming from the old Sonic Team method, before everything hit the fan and went full anime.

Oh Gamma i remember how much i cried at his death when i fist saw it and even today i would shed a tear when is see that scene. I mean he is like the only Sonic character with the most character development! If you don't think his ending is sad then sorry but you have no heart. I mean i see blind lets players (mostly) feel sadened by his death...except Egoraptor...that asshole...
Don't look at me like that. This is NOT the Game Grumps channel so i can safley and openly say i like Sonic Adventure. Deal with it haters. If you don't like the game that is no problem. We all have different tastes and opinions. However if you have a PROBLEM with me for LIKING the game...then fuck off.
I get so paranoid when i want to make a GOOD point about ANYTHING about this game during their playthrouhg and even i did acknowledge the flaws and why others would see it as a bad game...everyone would still think i'm an idiot for liking the game. You can say "They are just trolls" but on the internet it's hard to tell between trolls or those who actulaly hate Sonic because of Arin Hanson.
I remember explaining why this scene is so emotional and the why people would find it emotional but it doesn't matter what good point you make Sonic haters would find a way to make it look like "Duh Sonic fanboy is wrong! We haters are right!" and one of the reasons was because "It wasn't performed well! The awful animations and voice acting is what ruins it!" ....really guys? Sure i'll admit the animation and voice acting did not age well but....really?
I deleted the comment to avoid getting more negative comments. I'm serious; people if you never watched GG before and like sonic games and see your favourite sonic game that is actually good being unfairly based on by the GG...i suggest you ignore the videos all together and do NOT make a comment.
Trust me from my experience you are NOT allowed to state your opinion on the game...doesn't matter what you say or do to eveyone else you are just a stupid blind sonic fan who shouldn't be taken seriously.
Even if you just say "I like this game" without ever saying stuff like "Arin is playing bad on purpose" or "People unfairly hates this game" or any other reason to try to make a point...you are still gonna get hated.
If you like it you are a blind sonic fan boy and thats all they see.
They don't care if your a nice guy, a true sonic fan, a proffesional video game critic, a celebrity, the president, the emperor, jesus christ or even god himself. Too them as long as you like Sonic you are scum of the internet and have no place in it.

don't worry mate, you're not alone, I even think Sonic Adventure is BETTER than Sonic Adventure 2 by a long shot, despite having Big The Cat, it's the only hindrance to the rest of the gameplay, while SA2 had a lot of questionable stages and BORING messes (Mad space for example)

Bob the Temmie Arin has always come across as pretty abrasive to me, he seems like the kind of guy who would be hard to get along with.
He also mistakes his ideas of what games he likes with objectively good game deisgm (as shown by Ocarina, where most of his complaints were "I HAVE TO WAIT A FEW SECONDS")

Was he made from Gamma's parts? I don't recall that being said. Eggman did make other robots in Gamma's likeness in SA2. They are a "blink and you miss em" kind of enemy. I thought Chaos Gamma was just another robot built in Gamma's likeness. (as is Omega with his color scheme being very similar to Gamma's) Popular theory goes is that Eggman never found out about Gamma's betrayl, so in Eggman's eyes; for the most part Gamma was a success even though he couldn't defeat Sonic. Hence why Eggman would go on to make robots resembling Gamma in later games.

      No
Chaos Gamma was made using salvaged parts from the original e-series line up. With a good eye and a knack for lore, you can actually recognize the difference parts and which robot they belonged to.

great to see some recognition of my favourite character in sonic adventure. I think that gamma really benefited from having a short story. instead of becoming another amnesiac seeking out his true self like shadow (even if gamma came first) we get to see him learn that even of he doesn't learn everything, that's okay. him only appearing in one game allows that feeling not to become stale but instead accept that he is happy as is.
also please do omega or emerl. I know omega isn't the best character but emerl has a similar story to gamma but with it's own twist at the end.

5:03 I think that's the point. Gamma's design isn't supposed to be creative or interesting. It's supposed to be plain and unnoticable, since that way he will feel like a nobody other than a mindless soldier, which he pretty much is. Or at least, was, before he started acting by individually, which was the main reason he became a somebody, a hero in his own way, the saviour of the flickie family. His actions are making him a character, not his looks.

    Sonic: Gotta go fast!
    Tails: Being brave
    Knuckles: Emerald broke
    Amy: Protecting a bird
E-102 Gamma: As a robot initially created for war and violence, Gamma begins to question and understand the meanings of life, love, and why we cherish things that we hold close, even if it brings no benefit. Gamma then takes it upon himself to deny his directives and delete his master registration to free his brothers from Eggman's grasp, by killing them one by one. He believes this is a way to save them, as they have not been blessed by Gamma's gift of free will and do not understand the difference between right and wrong. After discovering that he himself is not free, and that a bird remains trapped inside of his own metallic vessel, Gamma takes it upon himself to end his own life by activating his self destruct to free the bird, thereby ending his short-lived story.
