Glad someone said something about this. Sonic X (the Japanese dub, anyway; I haven't fully watched the English dub) has one of if not my favorite version of Amy. She's super obsessed with Sonic and can get kind of overbearing, but does still care about things and people outside of the blue blur. I really miss that ultra-chaotic energy she used to have, like when everybody returns to Sonic's dimension except Sonic himself and she goes batshit insane throwing like a bajillion hammers at Eggman's ship. It was HILARIOUS Now, she's just... nice. No over-exuberance, no God-like destructive wrath, just... kind and determined to do good. Those were all aspects of her character before, but there was more than just that. If they want to make Amy's character more "mature," (aka please fans who didn't like her the way she was,) I think the best way to go about it, in my opinion, would be to keep her obsession with Sonic, but tone it down just a little bit. I’ve always liked how funny and endearing Amy was, so replacing it with something more subtle might be a good idea. Show that Amy is trying to take the feedback the Sonic fanbase is constantly trying to offer, but can’t because she’s way too infatuated with Sonic. Instead of having her chase him, have her conveniently appear wherever he goes and then dismiss any questions on how she got there. Have her desperately try to maintain a sane interaction with Sonic that completely flops, and PLEASE, for the love of GAIA, let her be a goddamn MENACE again! I wanna see Amy go full-on Sonic Unleashed opening cutscene on Eggman when he disses Cream or something, idk- I just want to see Amy being Amy, not Amy being “girl who exhibits kindness of a marketable nature.” I don’t hate Amy in the IDW Comics or Frontiers, but I love Amy in Sonic X and some of the older games. I doubt Sega and Sonic Team will ever go back to the way these characters used to be after Sonic Frontiers’ success, but I just wanted to give my two cents on the whole thing. Your video highlighted a lot of the core issues I have with Amy’s character in recent Sonic media, and I hope future productions, i.e. Sonic Prime, the Sonic movies, do something to make Amy, well, Amy again. Nice work👍
@PixelrushTheFunnyPixelMan Nice. I'm honestly not that big of a fan of the English dub, but what I've heard of Lisa Ortiz's Amy in- and outside of the dub has been pretty solid. My favorite VA for her, personally, is Taeko Kawata, who’s been voicing her since Sonic Adventure in the JP dubs outside of Sonic Shuffle. I think they both do a good job at capturing Amy’s overpowering enthusiasm no matter her mood, even if I do have a preference.
@@PixelrushTheFunnyPixelManLest we forget Amy in Boom where even though she was nice and mature (she even looks her oldest in Sonic Boom), she actually had more personality than given credit for, like everyone else for the sake of pleasing us meme-lovers (seriously, Boom Knuckles will always be known as the “Meme… approved!” guy), as they knew how to have fun with the characters being menaces as the cartoon characters they are supposed to be and while they knew when to be silly (which was most of the time ua-cam.com/video/SQwfvuEG1U8/v-deo.html), they know when to take things seriously without becoming Edgy the Hedgy (who was in every season finale here, Vector was also a cameo in one of the episodes, yet no other Chaotix member, as much as I respect and admire this funny show, what it needed to do the whole time was show us what it would be like if other major characters from Rouge to Cream to Blaze to Silver were in this).
One idea of Amy that after playing the murder of sonic the hedgehog was why not combine what makes her a good character in murder of sonic are hedgehog and what I personally thought was her best portrayal, how she was in sonic boom, have her be fun. And bubbly like you said but also have her be her own strong independent individual like in sonic boom where she didn't depend of being "obsessed with sonic" as her main personality trait y'know
It is really bizarre to find someone else's take on Amy that near perfectly matches my own. Kudos, you really do seem to get the heart and appeal of the character. No compromise, no trying to tone her down or excuses for the gutting of her character just because some people don't appreciate it. Keep on rocking Amybro.
I think only reason why they made the characters in frontiers a lot more melancholy was because it took place in a apocalyptic graveyard so I doubt they’re going to keep that grim tone for the rest of the games going forward.
Well… that and being partially trapped in a digital pocket dimension without a physical body to interact with, making them little more than lingering ghosts, probably didn’t help much either. I think everyone wouldn’t be in the best of spirits if they were in that situation.
I feel like what you said about Sonic Frontiers is entirely fair. The more down-to-earth tone of the tale necessitated the more exaggerated features of characters to be toned down, and I think that it certainly hurts some more than others, most notably Amy and Knuckles. But, given the reception of The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog's writing, it's very possible we might be getting her old characterization back once Frontiers is through. Hell, who knows? Since she'll be playable in the final update, maybe we'll get to see her more cheerful side.
Well for amy i can honestly see that but for knuckles not really he was liked before frontier is even came out the archie comic books and adventure games is were most definitely define knuckles as a character compare to the other medias same with tails except for the movies and honestly sonic was more of a shonen character he was goofy sure but not to point were it gets annoying and tails and knuckles were done dirty in the 2010s and don't me wrong i don't mind the goofiness in the sonic series in fact i loved it and always has been hell i even defended amy's personality back in the day and still to this day and the murder of sonic hedgehog was really good too as separate thing didn't play it but seen screenshots and videos of it but the goofy vibe wasn't done right and an overstays its welcome the 2010s thanks to the writers of happy tree friends the only time it was done right was in the IDW comics which archie comic writer ian flynn wrote in some of the issues, sonic boom tv series and sonic heroes and adventures of sonic the hedgehog and also sega is never going to abandon that style ever is this that frontier was going to total different game as it own thing when comes to story and characters and to me knuckles and tails were fine and that game and still show a little goofy moments with them same with sonic who in which gives me sonic adventures vibe and its still too soon to judge the characters personalities right now its just one game people relax 😗
Hi! I randomly found you through your post on Twitter about Amy's damsel in distress line! You basically said EVERYTHING that I've ever felt about this whole Amy debacle. How she was previously and why I liked it, and what's happening now and why I hate it. I'm so glad that there's other people out there who agree with me!
You dont know how much i've been waiting a video like this. Dude, I was feeling like I was in another universe when people talk about the charaterization of the characters in frontiers. Good video, you have a new subscriber. 🎉
I would have to disagree. Personal I see a lot of the old Amy in Sonic Frontiers. Compare Amy to how she was in Sonic Adventure and the character traits that made her special is still there: 1. Amy loves Adventure. The first thing we see Amy talk about during her story in SA1 is how boring things have been since the last time she hung out with Sonic. She misses that thrill. And in Frontiers, we see Amy was going to join Sonic & Tails on their journey to find the Chaos Emeralds. 2. Amy puts others before herself (even if it’s at her own expense) Amy shows to help the birdie in SA1 find Family, even though she knew trying to do that, could put herself in danger. She literally had nothing to gain from doing this, but she did it, because she knew it was right. In Frontiers, when Amy is freed, the first thing she worries about is Sonic & Tails’ well-being. She doesn’t even seem to phase by her cyber form in that moment, because she’s more worried about her friends. In addition, instead of focusing on getting herself back to normal, she attempts to help the Coco with their struggles. 3. Amy clearly loves Sonic In Sonic Adventure, it’s made clear Sonic is the one who inspired her and the one she wants to spend her time with. In Frontiers, Amy sticks up for Sonic when Sage claims that he is endangering the world. Later on, although she wants to go off to help others, but Amy fears Sonic and her will grow apart if she does. (Sonic recognizes that fear and reassures her he’ll always be there for her.) 4. Independence In Sonic Adventure, after reuniting the bird with its family, Amy decides she can have her own adventures independently from Sonic every once in a while. In Frontiers, Amy decides to go on a trip and help those she can. With all this said, I strongly believe Amy Rose is not out of character in Sonic Frontiers. She is simply involved to suit a more mature story. (The same way. The version of sonic portrayed in Sonic Adventure is different from the one in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic & The Black Knight, despite them both being in character.) Feel free to have your own thoughts on the matter, but this is my perspective.
I think you missed the point of the video. Amy's behavior and personality is important to the character, their dynamics and what makes them likeable and entertaining. If you take that away, then they become boring and sterile. Amy loving Sonic for example is pointless if it's borederline hidden , as the point of it was how it informs and influences her behavior and creates fun interactions with other characters, namely Sonic himself. Amy and Sonic's interactions are soooo sooooo bland now.
Pretty much explained why Amy is one of my favorite female Sonic characters. Tho, I will agree Sonic Frontiers has completely ignored the part of her that loves Sonic. Now if this wanted to make a story of her moving on from her crush from Sonic that's fine. But I will miss it. "These are cartoon characters, let them be goofy!" Please say it louder for the people in the back!
Amy is also one of my favorite Sonic characters. I hope that one day there will be a nice balance of what people want from her, but in the end you can't please everyone.
To be fair, Sonic Adventure 2 was also a darker story, but it still had that 90s optimism and energy. That's what made the quieter moments like Shadow's death stand out since it gave the characters time to settle down.
And its serious tone feels a lot more genuine than Frontiers, given they have the characters talk normally in SA2. Unlike Frontiers, where everyone sounding old and boring, because supposedly you can't tell a serious story using "cartoony voices."
An interesting take I hadn't considered. Would definitely love to hear more of these. A lot of people in the community seem to have been arguing or wondering about the characterizations of the characters and what direction they'll go since Frontiers and Murder of Sonic came out.
THANK YOU btw with Amy hitting Sonic or others with hammers, that's because Sonic as a series is Japanese.... y'know how many times Luffy's crew in One Piece has beaten the snot out of him? Anime does this for a laugh and to have characters express a high level of emotion that simply can't be done in real life because... that's actual domestic violence. Nobody complains about any other Japanese media but Sonic gets hit by a cartoony hammer and its like, "THIS SERIES HAS JUMPED THE SHARK!!!"
Yes, people do complain about it. That is one of my (and many others) most hated tropes in fiction. Especially when the ones doing it never receive repercussions themselves despite deserving it. It’s the main reason I hate Nami.
Nah! Sakura from naruto get the same hate like amy, always punching naruto for acting stupid on her. People also bash on sakura too from naruto, not just amy from sonic the hedgehog series. It iconic people hate sakura and amy as character, they be main characters be popular in Japan.
You get it. I’ve always loved Amy because she is bubbly, hyperactive, optimistic, isn’t afraid to express her emotions, and always does what she knows is right. I’ve never seen her as a psychotic fan girl, and she has NEVER been one. She was just a girl with a crush and she wasn’t afraid to show it. Even with her having a crush on Sonic, she isn’t afraid to stand up to him for what she believes. Like in sa1 when he was about to end Gamma, She stood in the way and wouldn’t let Sonic do it and even convinced him not to. And in Frontiers when Sonic wanted to leave the koco to basically fend for themselves, Amy stood up to him because she wanted to help the koco. Unfortunately, Amy has went through a lot of bad writing (like in sonic heroes) and that has affected the way people see her even to this day. People seemed to hate her so much that Sega basically got rid of everything that made Amy special. Like you said, in Frontiers Amy wasn’t lively like she usually is. We get that it was a dark story, but there has been other dark stories (like the adventure games or shadow the hedgehog 05) where she was still just as bubbly. In Sonic Prime, she just acts like a generic main girl. (Talking about normal Amy btw, not her other variants). Luckily in TMoStH she had her bubbly, go lucky personality back and I kinda hope it stays that way.
"I've never seen Amy as a psychotic fan girl and she never was." Sonic Heroes Amy: "Sonic this time there's no way out of marrying me!" *proceeds to beat the shit out of Team Sonic in her campaign so she can have a forced marriage with Sonic*
@@CaptainF123Did you really take seriously a dialogue that was not even serious? All the team fights in Sonic Heroes start for absurd reasons. Besides that whole marriage thing was never mentioned or hinted at afterwards, it was just a dialogue to annoy Sonic and that was it, it wasn't serious at all.
Wow a lot I've never really thought about. I do like how lately Amy crush on Sonic has been downplayed a bit so he feels more comfortable to be around, but I absolutely love her energy and personality she had before. She really stood out, and it's a same a lot of people couldn't appreciate it. (Looking at you, Archie. Keeping her as a background character for most of it).
I agree. Also, not to sound like a hater or anything, but the reason they treat Amy as a backseat character is to make room for Princess Sally. I mean, think about for a sec, both girls were literally created to be like the love interest for Sonic. Think about it; In one of the Sonic CD manuals (which is most likely the western version), They replaced Amy with Sally yet Sally never made an appearance within the game. So it's safe to assume that SOA was trying to replace Amy with Princess Sally. I might be wrong and not saying this to hate on Sally, but it kind of makes sense if it's the case.
@@BJSolar02yes and no. SOA had Sally. SOJ has Amy…but they had bad communication with each other. When making the comics, they had many ideas involving the FFs, but they had to do a CD adaptation in the middle of their plans, so they had little ideas on how to handle Amy, kinda like what happened with Tails. Even when Amy became more popular I guess Archie didn’t want to give up Sally especially since she still had fans.
I dont think you NEEDED to gut her affection for sonic to make him not be completely avoidant of her of a jerk to her is the thing. Just make him used to it since they have been friends for so long.
I assure you that if Amy had been like she is in Sonic Frontiers since her inception, Amy would not have the great popularity and fan base that she has. Of course, she wouldn't have received as much hate or criticism, but that's what made her memorable and remarkable, whether you like that trope or not. I understand that not everyone likes Amy, and I'm not going to judge them just because they don't like a fictional pink hedgehog either. But it's just that that was the delight of those who liked Amy. And I'm not saying that her only characteristic should be "I love Sonic" and nothing else, in fact something I like about Frontiers, is that at least they gave her tarot cards some use, since it expands her character and gives her unique and interesting abilities, compared to just using her hammer. I don't feel that Amy needs to mature too much, just let her be herself, with her virtues and flaws that characterized her so much and made her memorable.
I really hate the Monkey's Paw this fandom put Amy into. If she's fun, she's annoying. If she expresses love, she's obsessive. If she raises her anger or discontent, she's abusive. If she expresses nothing at all, she's "mature". These people don't like Amy, hell, they wouldn't care if she were suddenly gone. I loved this character for who she always was, and who she was never needed any fixing, tweaking, erasing, nothing, all she needed was to be respected, we have this year but this is the second Monkey's Paw, all she is now is a stock nice girl that can't express any negative emotions. As someone who grew up with Pucca, I never really had issues with how Amy expressed her love, hell, I think it was charming, how many times does the girl need to passively wait for the boy to confess, if at all? Amy pushes Sonic out of that comfort zone with her outward expressions, he's not used to love, and so, he doesn't know how to respond so he runs away, the catch is that he never goes to his full speed (something people CLEARLY MISS), he lets Amy run after him. For a fandom that wants Sonic to be "not a flat character", nuance is what they fail to understand constantly.
I'm glad someone else realised that he's not REALLY running away from her. Because Amy can't run as fast as Sonic and Sonic can easily zoom away at lightspeed, leaving her in the dust, but he doesn't. Instants like Heroes and Riders clearly highlight this, and yet folks failed to notice for some reason.
Now that she isn't so obssesive we get more cute interactions tho, like they aren't onesided and Sonic doesn't seem annoyed. Have her be bubbly, energetic and expressive, but not so pushy with Sonic, tryng to push someone 10 km away his comfort zone is hard lol, I just want cute interactions c:
*Slams table* THANK YOU!!! I thought I had been alone in thinking this the entire time, and I'm glad to see I'm not :'D But yeah, Amy has to be one of the most misunderstood characters in this franchise, if not THE most misunderstood. Almost everywhere I go, I see and hear people call 2000's Amy a "creepy stalker" or say her personality is just "loves Sonic", and praise the hell out of Sonic Boom, IDW, and Frontiers for having her be "mature" and giving her "more personality". But Amy always had a personality outside of crushing on Sonic... She was an incredibly energetic goofball of a girl who was super open about her emotions, with "love" being her most expressed cause, you know, she's in love with a boy who's the title character of this franchise. Amy was quick to anger and could be too focused on Sonic, sure, but Amy was more often than not full of joy and had an innate desire to help and protect others; be they a Flicky that bumped into her, a robot of Eggman's that freed her and then was almost about to be destroyed by Sonic, or a rabbit and a big cat whose friends were missing (whom Amy would become BFFs with). I guess I could agree that Sonic X, Battle, and other material at the time made Amy a tad too fixated on Sonic. But honestly, Amy's bigger problem in the 2000's was that she was written quite often as a temperamental brat who would attack anyone for any slight annoyance. *THAT* needed to be toned down. The open crush on Sonic, though? Amy's boundless excitement, emotion, and silliness? Those did NOT need to be toned down. But Lost World and Boom did exactly that, turning Amy from an emotional genki girl with an open crush to a "kind and mature girl who keeps her crush on a boy a secret" ('secret crush' in itself being one of the most overused and annoying tropes ever). And somehow this is regarded as a GOOD thing, the point in which Amy became likeable and a well-rounded character, even though that's a clear case of regression/character neutering. Amy didn't become *more* of a character, she became *less* of a character! But who cares, at least she's not obsessing over Sonic now >_> Yeah, "hooray" to that: the character whose core trait since inception is loving another character, no longer loves that character. Such an improvement /s I've been seeing IDW and Frontiers being praised for getting Amy truly "back on the right track", but I honestly fail to see that. IDW pretty much had Amy be possessed by Sally Acorn for the first 30 issues, as "tired" as that is to say. And while Amy's being written more like how she was in the 2000's, her overall character is still very subdued in IDW. Especially since IDW introduced its own original character, Tangle the Lemur, who is an excitable goofball who is super expressive with her emotions :\ And Frontiers... You really took the words out of my mouth. Amy couldn't be more contrary to her own character in that game, being so quiet and melancholy. Amy wants to show her love to the world, but once again doesn't express any love to the boy she has a massive crush on. And *that* seemingly contributed to Amy's 'Fast Friends profile' wherein it's made explicit "Amy's no longer chasing after Sonic"... FUCK. THAT. The only material that has *actually* done Amy correctly in the past TEN YEARS was 'The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog'. That was the Amy I fell in love with, and what Amy should be again.
The best words I've seen in this comment section. You pretty much highlight everything that is wrong with Amy now how braindead how she was apparently "fixed" now.
This video is everything I wanted to say, but couldn't find the words for. Recently I started holding the "it's good that she's evolving" argument just because I couldn't find the specific reasons and words for why I liked pre-frontiers Amy. There was just something about her that makes her interesting and fun. Thank you for saying the words I couldn't find.
Pixelrush my man, Minority or not I think you are absolutely right about Amy Rose. I completely agree with everything you said throughout the entire video, She is like a shining pink gem that most people just do not understand because they don’t look deeper into her character and are probably not open minded enough to try to understand her at her core in the first place. Amy is my favorite character also, and i really hope they bring her Passionate over the top personality back real soon. She feels incomplete without it. There really is only one Amy Rose out there, Flaws and all, I don’t think anyone could forget her And impact she has left on us.
Amy's personality is far from gone. Did you see how she reacted when Sonic almost refused to continue helping the Koco towards the end of the first chapter? Or better yet, how she responded to Sage showing up and saying Sonic was a threat to the world? In both instances, Amy wasn't just angry, she was genuinely outraged! Her time on that island witnessing the struggles of the Koco, put her feelings into perspective. While Amy always cared for her friends, she felt like she always put Sonic before anyone else, which she began to feel wasn't fair. There's a whole world with amazing people to meet and things to see. Why should Sonic be treated any differently, like he's the only one who's special? She believed that if she only lived with the only goal of eventually being married to someone she's looked up to ever since she first met him, she would just keep restricting herself to a fixed circle, which she then realized she wanted to get out of. Ironically, by chasing Sonic around, she was not living like Sonic. Her new character bio states that Sonic will always be number one in her heart. This, in summary, means that even though she has chosen to go out with friends, go on road trips, maybe make new friends along the way, and see what the world has to offer, Sonic will always be her personal best role model and she will always love and support him, whether that be romantic or platonic, and she will forever cherish her friendship with Sonic. She's not losing her character, she's just stepping outside of her comfort zone, no pun intended with the word 'zone'. Even Tails is doing this by the end of Frontiers, but this is about Amy. Simply put, most elements of her life will no longer revolve around only Sonic. Whether one believes this is a benefit or detriment to her character is entirely up to their interpretation, but in my personal opinion, this is definitely an improvement! Recall the finale of Sonic Adventure 2. The Space Colony Ark was blitzing its way toward Earth on a collision course to the extinction of all life! While the gang was doing everything in their power to prevent the massive space base from shattering the planet, Shadow was just standing around and waiting for the moment of catastrophe... until Amy stumbled in and vouched in favor of Shadow joining the cause to save everyone, which not only managed to touch him, but it made him recall the full memory of Maria's dying wish. This convinced Shadow to join the effort leading into the final battle. Amy essentially triggered a domino effect that ended up saving the world! If she weren't there to talk to Shadow when she did, the story wouldn't have ended the same- and I reckon it would've been the last story ever told, given the desperate circumstances! If Amy's love for the world could do that even while having an obsession with Sonic, just imagine the potential for her character after the decision she made in Frontiers? Her charisma might just get magnified! In conclusion, Amy isn't gone. To say she felt off because she didn't spend her time onscreen gushing over Sonic in an exaggerated way is okay. However, to say that she's a shell of her former self is like saying her love for Sonic is her only notable trait as character, which is something not even you agree with and goes against what was said in this video apart from the bits about Frontiers. Her outrage in the two moments from Frontiers that I mentioned, and even her being overly melancholic for the Koco, make it clear that this is still the same Amy. Those moments of Amy's high emotion passion shouldn't have gone ignored. Amy has evolved, in my opinion, not regressed. As someone working to be a writer, Amy's change of perspective and ultimate decision are together a welcome change of pace to me! I am looking forward to see what future Sonic games do with this new version of the pink hedgehog!
I know it probably shouldn't count, since Sonic Team wasn't involved in it (rather, it was made by the Sonic Twitter team), but there is a glimmer of hope of the old Amy coming back, and I noticed you didn't bother to mention it. The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog
I completely agree with everything you said. Sonic isn’t Amy’s ONLY personality, but it is part of it so it shouldn’t be downplayed..or ignored…. *cough* *cough* Sonic Frontiers *cough* *cough* OH how’d that get there…. And I get what you mean when you say in Sonic Frontiers the characters seem out of character, and I don’t like that either…
@@geeebuttersnap2433 yeah...no I wouldn't really say soulless and no heart because that's a very strong word I don't think she's soulless bruh you are honestly over exaggerating.
I'm glad people are getting in the comments. I don't even have anything to add really (for once). She's passionate, heads-strong, and gung-ho about her decisions (kinda rash). A lot of people just see the crush on Sonic and think that's what causes those traits, but she's like that when he's not the topic too. Taking away the obsession shouldn't turn her into a common modern female lead (the mature, responsible, swiss-army knife)
Ngl as a kid I saw myself on her she also taught me how to be brave while giving kindness at the same time. Those people who says that she's weak because she's not #girlboss and she's a bad influence for girls is so funny and stupid like go outside and touch some grass lmao
Damn I think you’re on to something cause I couldn’t put my finger on who she was and why I liked her personality back then, but you said it simply and understood what made her (and the rest of the others) so great!
FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT!!!!! Amy got me into the Sonic franchise as well, and she also helped me overcome personal life struggles. To see her get treated the way she is by both fans and official media (especially in terms of writing) just honestly sucks. I never understood why new Amy felt so... off to me. Now I get it. It's the lack of exaggeration. Sure, I like more serious stories, but even in said stories, there's always an upbeat character hoping for the best... and none of that was present in Amy. If you ask me, the current state of Amy's character is just... insulting for lack of a better word. Like, it's as if the writers listened to the fans who said "MaKe AmY mAtUrE!1!!!11!" and they did. Which, again, sucks big donkey butt. Sorry for the long rant. Stuff like this really ignites my passion - no pun intended - for Amy as a character. Anyway, great video!!! I hope you make more of these! :D
Agree. I seen updates like this to characters like the newer Disney Princesses. It shouldn't be bad, but it feels lonely no matter how strong a girl has to be.
We're kinda in that spot in the franchise where we don't know anything of what's to come up next. We just got done with this horrible meta era and we are left in the dark. Characters are changing and lore is swaying in the direction we are either going to and not going to like. Amy is just part of that change. I see debates whether she should go back and stay in this current version of the character. Personally I prefer Amy as she was in Sonic X but, I am also not too upset about the change or bothered. I see her as Amy, if that makes sense. Amy is Amy and she can be goofy and straight forward as the story sees fit. I see Frontiers story as the characters going back to center. There reestablishing themselves within the franchise and growing. So, we're just starting this rebirth kinda era so, I'm waiting and seeing what comes up in the future.
In a way I get what you mean about her and funny you say that Amy was your introduction to Sonic because when I was younger I knew about Sonic but never was to crazy for the series if it wasn't for me looking up Amy Rose content back then when I was in middle school that made me fall for the character and the Sonic series more itself thanks to her.
Imma say my piece. Amy back in the day for me was irritating, but the good kind of irritation for a cartoon character. I liked Amy, and even if I was kinda just wanting her to leave our blue boy alone, I also really wanted to see them together, almost just because of how much she wanted to. New Amy is... certainly different. It's an evolution that I'm completely fine with but also fine if old Amy comes back. The thing that sets her apart besides her bubbly and unsubtle nature is her compassion. Someone mentioned it already, but Imma list a few off the top of my head anyway: Gamma, Shadow, Silver, etc. The thing about new Amy is that she still has the compassion, she's just a lot more subtle. Which I can see being a problem for people. On the other hand (at least in the comics) Sonic and Amy have legitimate chemistry now which I kind of like. And she even slips back into the whole "fangirl funk" for a minute before remembering why she was there and how Sonic operates, as well as just straight up saying the whole "I love you" phrase. These characters have known each other for a while now, I kinda think this moment was Amy remembering that kind of thing makes Sonic uncomfortable. That's kind of why he ran off from her in the first place. She was constantly trying to go on dates, get a kiss, etc etc, and it was so much intensity that Sonic just couldn't be around her comfortably which is understandable and also IMPRESSIVE. Like THE Sonic, Fastest Thing Alive, who's destroyed giant killer robots, can't handle how intense you are. That's crazy dude. But yeah. I think her mellowness is valid, but your arguments aren't invalid. I don't think they're going to do a super serious Frontiers-y game again, at least for a while, wo seeing how they handle Amy is going to be interesting.
Well she’s kinda just well…it’s complicated. I actually do like her writing in frontiers and it kinda gets to other people. Think about it. Sonic doesn’t wanna help the kocos but after Amy convinces him he continues to do it and even encourages others to do the same You must realize Amy is the Minnie Mouse to sonic so it’s not surprising they would have similar personalities. The devs are the definition of not wanting to play with a double edged sword. Amy can either be the loudest character or the quietest. Nobody knows what incarceration you get.
There are games where they did exaggerate Amy's crush (I'm looking at you Sonic Free Riders and Battle), however while Amy did have moments where she flirted with Sonic, clearly in important or serious moments, she helps others, she even didn't mind Elise kissing Sonic when he was dead in Sonic 2006. However I don't understand why this constant insistence on making the characters mature too much, I mean, Sonic isn't the most mature character, and yet people are fine with him, or Knuckles too. That would be fine if Sonic was a self-conclusive series, I mean a series that has an ending, but it's not. Years will go by and there will still be new games, new comics, new series or who knows another movie. The point is that Sonic is a franchise that is constantly renewed, it is not a series that has a beginning, a denouement and an end. It's like Mickey Mouse, a character that has been around for many years, but the character has changed almost nothing, he's still the same.
@@antrox2346 well. If you want to develop sonic and Amy, you want do this. Amy’s character before frontiers describes someone who can get into a conversation with anyone. With the direction there taking, sonic is becoming more of the more mature characters I’m not saying Amy needs to be loud as well. BUT if they write her like they do in IDW it would be more balanced.
I have always loved Amy since I was a kid she is energetic sweet caring and i loved how she was never scared to show her feelings for sonic also one thing I want to point out is that Amy's love is very kid like because she is a kid I feel like people don't understand that Also I'm glad I found so many people who share the same opinions as me
I think its important to have her be a hot head whilst still being caring and nurturing. Me personally I just want the hot headed moments to be a little few and far between. If she was constantly pulling out her hammer like she was back in X it makes me wonder why anyone would hang out with her. The focus I think should be on the caring side and then have a short but memorable bit where she loses her temper and shows that even the nicest people have their limits and that you should never underestimate her. (Kinda like what I did in my fan series where shes mostly heartfelt and compassionate but then theres that little moment where she goes 🤬😡 🔨 mode)
I don’t know if i will get hate on my opinion but I don’t like the idea of amy going super (in canon way) not because she is a female hedgehogs, because she is equal to sonic. Amy will never be sonic in strengths or speed but that okay. It goes against her character arc in SA1. I don’t like modern amy and i agree all your point in this video. People said she have a character development but where… where is it? Sonic forces didn’t help amy as character at all. I miss old amy but I’m still look forward what she becomes in future even though I’m scared of sega what will do to amy.
Yeah, I always liked Amy being the most normal of the group. She just lives in Station Square doing her own thing. It makes her all the more admirable when she puts herself in dangerous situations since she's probably putting the most at risk.
I agree with the things you said here i loved sonic frontiers don't get me wrong but i missed the fun and energy of the characters a lot more than i thought i would that feeling you get from boosting in Sonic Unleashed hearung sonic yell WOO felt so energetic and kind of gave me a dopamine rush. Now its mostly gone
I'll start this off by saying that I love Amy more than anything. I even like to say that she got into a battle with my depression, and she won. Ever since I jumped into the sonic franchise toward the beginning of the summer, I have always felt attached to Amy. At first, I was in some sort of mental denial to her being my favorite character, but even now she has never stopped growing on me. On a further point, you made a lot of fantastic points in this video, and they sort of cored a hole in my soul. I'll admit her old character wasn't perfect, but it at least felt like Amy. And although I'd disagree with saying that the other three characters in Frontiers (Tails, Knuckles and Sonic, for clarification) took a big step in the right direction for development, I feel like Amy took a step back. Sure, she finally stopped chasing Sonic around, but at the cost of everything that makes me love her to begin with. However, I will say she was written decently in Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog, so it isn't too late, but I hope Sega brings Amy back, because you said it yourself - Amy is now a shell of her former self. As some have already pointed out in various other comments, there is a nice balance that needs to be struck with Amy - Give her the eagerness, kindness, and will to help that she had in the adventure games, unleashed, and even 06. They can keep their maturity and still give back the Amy we know and love. TL;DR: Bring Amy back.
This was such a beautiful video, because Amy Rose is my favorite character in the series, too! She was pretty much the reason that I even got interested of the series in the first place. Hell, we were even kinda born around the same year. And I just now sort of realized (Not to a T.) that my personality kinda comes from her. Because, when I was little, I used to look up to her and wanted to be just like her. 💗🌹❤
I assure you you are not in the minority, I very much lean in the direction of concern and dissatisfaction with how Amy is handled now. It's frustrating too because I feel like on both ends, the people that demand she needed to be "fixed" are both people that dismissed her as having nothing else to her character beyond loving Sonic and on the other, people who seemingly liked Amy but were willing to give up everything that made her fun and unique in order to obtain the approval of people that insisted she was a bad character. In my experience, there is a massive disparity between the people that complained about her online versus people offline that generally either liked her or didn't have a major problem with her the way she was, which I find rather disheartening. Amy was that youthful kid sister or female friend you had that alleviated the tension in the room with her good heart, spirit and antics. You found her annoying sometimes, but it was ultimately endearing. I know we aren't alone in having these criticisms and I can only hope readjustments are made. I just hope we don't have to wait another decade and a half to fix another case of Sonic fan complaints causing another fit of overcorrection. Enjoyed the video.
Blame sonic heroes, rush, battle, generations, free riders for that therevwas a reason why they labelled her annoying because her characterization in those games were actually bad! Specially in sonic Heroes I despise what this game did to her character that shitty interpretation for her character in heroes completely destroyed her character progression she had going on for her in SA1 and SA2!! people never hated in adventure games...but mostly in these games back where she mistreated the most! There's a reason why they called her annoying because her characterization in battle, rush, heroes, free riders, generations not only she's just only obssessive towards sonic but she also comes very arrogant and violent and rude to her friends for some reason like in sonic X in some episodes she's just...rude to her friends when things doesn't go how she wants and throwing rude and brattish tantrums to her friends the best example I can give you is episode 42 if I'm correct that infamous episode that at the end sonic just ditch her like an asshole...but she was also like this in that episode this shitty characterization literally goes against her character! her character is suppose to be kind, compassion and caring like how she was in SA1 and perhaps SA2 aswell...where did that compassion and kindness go? See that's what I mean it was against her character. Listen slander frontiers Amy all you want call her boring, bland idc yes I know it's not exactly the best narrative for her character due to her lacking the energy she had and comes off too serious because of the tone of the game and the situation they were in but atleast that game understood Amy's love-showing, kindness, compassion and her caring traits and showcased those characteristics of her strongly! Just like in the adventure games something other games in 2000's(heroes, battle, rush) and early 2010's(free riders, generations) miserably failed to do so!! No one hated her in SA1,SA2 they hated her in those games just for clarification.
The way I see it about Amy is that she is just being a typical girl who has a crush on a particular person like Sonic for instants. And plus in Sonic CD, Sonic was the one who saved her life from the hands of Metal Sonic when Sonic and Amy first met, so of course Amy is going to like him. I also like how you point out "If Amy isn't allow to be as loud and crazy as she use to be, what separates from any other female character." that was a good point you made by the way ^^.
I do think Amy Rose needs a bit more added to her, but her bold and energetic personality a major thing about her so why did they take that away. That should still be a major part of her character even if she's not chasing Sonic anymore. I actually prefer the "Obsessive, Creepy stalker, weirdo, crazy, obnoxious" Amy over "Sappy Rose."
I can wholeheartedly agree with everything said here. Amy's bombastic personality has definitely been watered down significantly, and I don't think it suits her character. I assumed they wanted to pull her away from the "obsessive fangirl" and "damsel-in-distress" archetypes, but Amy's been shown to subvert these tropes on multiple occasions in both the games and Sonic X. The only area I somewhat disagree with you on is the element of her fortune cards. I always thought that was a neat side-trait of her character, acting as a fun but obscure explanation for how she always managed to find Sonic. I think the officials, in both the games and comics need to find more interesting ways of utilizing them beyond "hey, these exist." Also, the whole "not chasing after Sonic anymore" bit from the new Fast Friends Forever site doesn't really do any favors...
Oh for sure, I don't mind her having a hobby and a fascination for mystical stuff. I think that really speaks to her innocence, like how she thinks meeting Sonic was fate and all. I'm just saying it shouldn't be her only trait.
I'm curious what you think about IDW Amy. I'm not in love with how Ian Flynn writers ger alot of the time but I feel like Evan Stanley really nails her character
Personally the IDW Amy has not captivated me, don't get me wrong, Amy IDW is a good version of Amy and maintains her qualities, however they are so attenuated that she really isn't that memorable and stand out, Amy and IDW is still an unremarkable character, that only remains a supporting character, however when Evan writes for Amy he has some good moments, but they are few unfortunately. PixelRush, already gave his opinion on Amy IDW and he says that even so, he feels that Amy IDW doesn't seem like much to him as he feels her still very attenuated and not very energetic at times.
@@antrox2346 I personally don't get that, Amy always feels energetic under Evan, sure Amy hasn't had that many great moments under Evan but that's really just because she hasn't been in spotlight which is less to do with a lacking personality and just a lack of page time and focus.
@@SxM04650 As I said, I'm not saying that Amy IDW isn't energetic, but compared to other portrayals, she doesn't feel as energetic as she usually is. Evan writes Amy well, and in fact it is when Evan writes for Amy that Amy has good moments and feels like her, but as I said there are very few of them. Also the IDW comics have been published since 2017, so I'm surprised they haven't done something unique or interesting or a story depends on her having a key role, maybe the closest was during the metal virus saga, but it wasn't great in my opinion.
that was a pretty good video good sir, while I enjoy frontiers aswell Amy's Character Definetly standed out in a bad way compared to how knuckles and Tails was
I think you write Amy perfectly. I just thought of the idea, of Sega, letting the fans write the characters for one game, to see how it works. I mean all of Sonic Mania is fanmade, so why not this. But then I realised, that if we were allowed to affect the characthers to that extent, I think the ships would start being included in that "Everything is canon" tweet
This is just a Hayden Christensen scenario. At first, he was hated, and then after they let him cook, he became like Peter Cullen. No one could think of someone else as that character. So we just got to let Amy cook
"Everyone wanted her fixed so badly, that she never seemed to had been appreciated in the first place" said by Pixelrush probably. Honestly, you could say the same about many things. But really amazing video, i feel like this sentence really describes it best.
As a huge Mario fan especially for the RPGs calling Peach bland is disrespectful on so many levels! Peach had tons of depth despite being kidnapped a lot she had tons of agency like sneaking around Bower's castle to send tips or useful information to Mario, hell sometimes she even sends power-ups for him. Also, she is very bubbly but a little naive which sometimes gets her into trouble such as in the TTYD intro. However, despite that, she knows when to put her foot down against others such as Bowser, outsmart her enemies like in Superstar Saga, and is more than willing to save the world multiple times she even has two games now! Yet just like Amy Pech is constantly looked over as " the bland stereotype damsel archetype, " I don't agree with it. Just wanted to give my opinions on that statement but overall good video.
I have to say, for being a long time sonic fan for many years, I personally feel that their fun and cool personalities aren't what they used to be anymore, and I can honestly say I miss them for that. My favourites were Amy for how fun, and overly energetic she used to be, and even though I kinda found her annoying for being overbearing at times and always having too much of an obsession for sonic, I always kinda loved that side of her personality because she was passionate and I loved it when she always chased him and was quite overbearing and he got annoyed with her for it because it was funny. Even if she was a bit annoying and sometimes exploded when things didn't go her way, she was selfless, compassionate and kind person at heart who even got through to Shadow with her words of wisdom and heart because she was an emotionally sweet girl who always wore her heart on her sleeve and cause he was always a troubled person by his past, he remember his best friend's wish who was a girl named Maria who lived together with him and she had a terminal illness known as Neuro-Immune Deficiency Sydrome and she died in the most sadest way and he got brainwashed by the doc who made him to seek revenge, but he ultimately turned good and moved on. Even though he was a loner and kinda cold at times, he was always a guy who had a kind heart and was always good, he just had been misguided. He later developed into something amazing by doing what he always felt was right and was no longer controlled by others but rather he chose his own path and left the past behind him not focusing on it anymore, much like sonic when the blue blur does what he feels is right too and that I feel is what really made them similar because sonic always helped people along the way and broke his path to do so, even when he had a really important mission to focus on, while shadow mostly focused on his missions.
Honestly the number one thing I’ve thought about when it came to specifically Amy and tails, they’re both just developing in a circle all the way back to adventure and people don’t see it
Amy didnt act this way though in SA1. Yeah she is doing things Amy would do, but she isn't acting like herself so it comes off wrong. Both Sonic and Shadow are aloof cool dudes with tude that save the day, but thay doesn't make them 100% the same person. I likr the plot ideas for Amy in Frontiers, but it comes off hollow since Amy doesn't feel or act like herself. Amy is just depressed l, reseved and for a lack of a better term way too"rational and level headed" for the kind of character she is, who normally is more of a tendy, spunky genki girl with a good heart who carpe diem
There definitely needs to be a balance between Amy's love for Sonic and Her Independence from him. (I say the Sonic Boom Cartoon was the perfect balance. Mainly Independence with a tiny bit of infatuation for Sonic)
I'm not a fan of how boom Amy was written as the level headed, no fun allowed rational one of the group and straight up treated her love of Sonic as this big secret she was embarrassed about. That's like..the opposite of Amy in every way.
Nah, Boom is not the best example. Amy Boom is boring and most only like her because she's not energetic and bubbly like the original Amy. She's just the girl with no definite action personality, not to mention those feminist airs she had.
I see your points but I have to disagree because O would say the main thing that people loved about Amy was her compassion and willingness to help others such as defending Gamma against Sonic, helping Shadow understand humanity, and going out of her way to help Silver find who he was looking for which is still an element in Frontiers while also keeping her fiery personality with her standing up for Sonic against Sage or debating with Sonic about helping the Koco. I feel her more mature affection for Sonic is better because Amy and Sonic can hold more conversations that showcase their differences in personality instead of Amy being over the top flirty with Somic which often leaves their interactions one note and repetitive; also her being focused on Sonic only ended up making her a one dimensional character that couldn't stand on her own without him which is something that other female characters in the serious don't suffer from but if they focus on her willingness to help others while being more of the patient one in the cast while also having a more controlled love of Sonic makes her character all the more better and interesting.
I simply don't agree. Amy and Sonic have been shown to be able to interact and have fine conversations in the past even though Amy had her dynamic with him. To me this idea that "now we can have more interesting conversations" just seems so backwards because now Sonic and Amy HAVE no dynamic so their convos are always all business and lack any actual substance. When they had the dynamic they had before, there was layers to their interactions and a push and pull between Amy obviously putting him off with her cringy but cute proclamations and flirting, and the fact that beyond that Sonic still cares about her and values her as a presence in his life and entourage. I just don't see what was gained by gutting all of that beyond just being able to say "they are on good terms" which by itself is frankly sterile.
Amy will continue to be compassionate, that has always been part of her character, however that does not make her unique or memorable, because several characters also help or have protected others, which is not a unique trait of Amy.
@@ChaddyFantome I don't know about that because in Frontiers alone that are able to have conversations about what their current situation, their curiosity on the island, and Amy being able to talk about Sonic being more careful and her concern for him without her trying to flirt due to her understanding the situation while Sonic is able to also able openly show his concern for Amy and her situation without needing to run away of negate her flirting. We see that both can have a difference in mindset when they talk to each other and can disagree such as Amy being resolute on helping the Koco while Sonic only wants to help his friends which shows a more layered conversation that displays their ideals which is only matched by Amy at her best in the past such as her defending Gamma from Sonic which also has layers as well while also not involving her fawning over Sonic. It is true that despite her actions, Sonic still cares about her but that still leaves their interactions rather one note because occasionally doesn't go beyond Amy showing her affection for Sonic and him running away which doesn't give them a chance to understand each other but in both Frontiers and IDW we see how their interactions give them a chance to connect and understand each other whether they agree or disagree which holds more depth in their dynamic.
@@antrox2346 Amy's traits of helping people are different due to her desire to help people being more about compassion and patience rather than wanting others to find freedom, a sense of justice or duty, or the memories of a promise. Amy's ideals come more from a place of love which is something that other characters don't share which is something that makes her stand out.
Having watched the video, I agree with some points (Amy being misunderstood and misinterpreted as a stalker has been a loong running joke over the years) but I disagree with the IDW and Frontiers interpretations having read and seen both respectively. Amy is still herself, with her care and compassion for others, especially living creatures, Amy's personality and characterization in the Final Horizon update, is most evident of her past traits, which is definitely something I loved seeing. I definitely understand where you're coming from, with how Amy was more open about her crush on Sonic and her bubbly expressiveness and tone in the past, it never bothered me either, I always found funny and kind of endearing, but I understand fans from the same era, did not lol. I think ( and I'm just saying this as a whole,) we kinda overanalyze or prioritize sometimes, a character's trait)s and when it's simmered down some, we instantly feel like something is missing or gone forever, Sonic in the early 2000s is a good example, Unleashed, Secret Rings and Black Knight were peak personality, because Sonic knew when to be funny and serious. The meta era was definitely a bad characterization era, everyone felt replace with terrible personalities and flanderization. The way Sonic is in Frontiers, I felt unleashed energy, I felt black knight energy, it wasn't about maturity, I genuinely felt like Sonic was back, *my* Sonic was back. I know when comes down to a fan base, the different generations of fans( both old and new) are always going to have their own personal view, their own personal take on the franchise/series, as the years go by, everyone has a unique expression of why they love a character. I know everyone in the fan base is really split down the middle, regarding Frontiers writing and characterization,(heck , even idw) but imo, the characters are themselves and better, yes, the tone is different from past games, but it did not suck the life out of them for me personally. I like how everyone is, in that game, but I also understand not every fan will be in agreement with me lol. Respectfully, agree to disagree, but I understand where you're coming from. 👌🏾 As one fan said 2 years ago, "who and what Sonic is, varies from fan to fan". And the same can be said for his friends too. I enjoyed the video, I would like to see more like this, reminds me of PJ and his takes.
@Pixelrush do you read the comics? because that is where she is maturing through development and where the full story and lore is. the comics has way cooler stuff that hasn't been shown in animation or video games... like the fact until recent, amy was technically a literal child(10) who was transformed into an semi-adult body(16) of how we know her design today, by a wish made on "the ring of acorns" because she was told she was too young to fight. amy literally started out as your stereotypical over-obsessive fangirl in the comics but like many fans of stuff out there, there are the mentally unstable ones who don't take a moment to think "is this really a sane thing to do?" amy for the longest time was possessive of sonic which is one of the many reasons he constantly ran away from her(also he wasn't her boyfriend). if i remember correctly amy is now in her 20s physically with her mind in the late teens, which is why we see her more mature mentally and less obsessive and chasing sonic, which is why sonic no longer runs away from her. sonic has always been an intense and kinda an all-over-the-place story. for example technically eggman as we know him today is technically a bio-droid upload of robo-robotnik who is an alternate universe version where he roboticized himself to get stronger(which worked) after a fail plan to roboticize the freedom fighters...which just made the freedom fighters stronger. robo-robotnik ended up getting destroyed transferred his consciousness to a space station, made a new body robotnik2.0 transferring into that, after being destroyed again, he had multiple higher advanced bodies prepared as a contingency and that's how he became the eggman we know today.
I think what happened with Amy was that Sonic Heroes exaggerated her characterization so badly that it kinda killed Amy's reputation as character for really long time.
I think Frontiers just didn't get a lot of time for devs to make "action" scenes for tails, knuckles & amy. Then they played harder into the "dialogue in digital form" format. When they mainly express themselves through dialogues, Ian's forced to write them a lot more introspectively (he got parachuted in halfway to, I guess, "save" the story with what animations they can cook up) I do like the final product that is Frontiers, seeing an introspection-focused story from the cast once in 20 years or so is def better than shallow writing. I doubt they will repeat the mistake of underbudgeting the animations for sonic games moving forward. Fingers crossed.
I think Frontiers had absolutely another tone. But IDW and The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog did Amy still nice character. She's not chasing him anymore and she had something but Sonic in her mind. I think it's pretty nice.
I just don't get what was ever wrong with Amy running after Sonic to catch him on his adventures. It was cute and even admirable and daring. It also informed her persistence in the stories of the games and her presence in the world and narrative. Now she just kinda feels like the obligatory girl of the group Sonic knows by comparison.
@@ChaddyFantomeExactly. Also, if you look deeper into this aspect, you'll realise that whenever Amy is chasing Sonic, she's essentially giving him more of the thing he loves to do the most. Running.
Im in some odd middle ground here, I really like how Amy both was and how she's portrayed in the IDW Comics, Frontiers less so as she jsut didn't really have any energy or strong emotion behind her. I think an inbetween of IDW and how she used to be would work, someone who is able to keep her composure, but only just. Able to be a solid leader and a supportive member of the cast to anyone who needs it, but also able to blow up should things not go how she wants them to go. And I say blow up not in a form of rage specifically, I mean in any emotional direction. Like on a dial of 1 to 10 she's sitting at a 5-6 most of the time with the chance of a sudden ping to 11. Maybe that's just me, not sure. Honestly if they just give her some of her energy back that alone would be a notable improvement.
So what I'm getting at is that you think it's out of character for a character to be sad and brought down by something genuinely tragic and heartbreaking.
It was HILARIOUS
Now, she's just... I wanna see Amy go full-on Sonic Unleashed opening cutscene on Eggman when he disses Cream or something, idk- I just want to see Amy being Amy, not Amy being “girl who exhibits kindness of a marketable nature.”
I don’t hate Amy in the IDW Comics or Frontiers, but I love Amy in Sonic X and some of the older games. Nice work👍
I recommend the dub of Sonic X solely for Amy. Lisa Ortiz is always the voice I hear when I think of Amy.
Fair enough.@@masturvidyo1673

Amen
Amen
I think only reason why they made the characters in frontiers a lot more melancholy was because it took place in a apocalyptic graveyard so I doubt they’re going to keep that grim tone for the rest of the games going forward.
Let's hope so
Well… that and being partially trapped in a digital pocket dimension without a physical body to interact with, making them little more than lingering ghosts, probably didn’t help much either. I think everyone wouldn’t be in the best of spirits if they were in that situation.
@@jillevers1432Hoping it remains so, the tone of Frontiers I mean, it was peak
Hope so
Eh, they've been through worse
I feel like what you said about Sonic Frontiers is entirely fair. The more down-to-earth tone of the tale necessitated the more exaggerated features of characters to be toned down, and I think that it certainly hurts some more than others, most notably Amy and Knuckles. But, given the reception of The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog's writing, it's very possible we might be getting her old characterization back once Frontiers is through. Hell, who knows? Since she'll be playable in the final update, maybe we'll get to see her more cheerful side.
I really hope so. TMOSTH was honestly a breath of fresh air.
Then again, we also have Final Horizon about to release, so who knows what we’ll get there.
@@crimsongogeta6810Final Horizon? What's that?
Well for amy i can honestly see that but for knuckles not really he was liked before frontier is even came out the archie comic books and adventure games is were most definitely define knuckles as a character compare to the other medias same with tails except for the movies and honestly sonic was more of a shonen character he was goofy sure but not to point were it gets annoying and tails and knuckles were done dirty in the 2010s and don't me wrong i don't mind the goofiness in the sonic series in fact i loved it and always has been hell i even defended amy's personality back in the day and still to this day and the murder of sonic hedgehog was really good too as separate thing didn't play it but seen screenshots and videos of it but the goofy vibe wasn't done right and an overstays
its welcome the 2010s thanks to the writers of happy tree friends the only time it was done right was in the IDW comics which archie comic writer ian flynn wrote in some of the issues, sonic boom tv series and sonic heroes and adventures of sonic the hedgehog and also sega is never going to abandon that style ever is this that frontier was going to total different game as it own thing when comes to story and characters and to me knuckles and tails were fine and that game and still show a little goofy moments with them same with sonic who in which gives me sonic adventures vibe and its still too soon to judge the characters personalities right now its just one game people relax 😗

I would have to disagree. Personal I see a lot of the old Amy in Sonic Frontiers.
Compare Amy to how she was in Sonic Adventure and the character traits that made her special is still there:
2. Amy puts others before herself (even if it’s at her own expense)
Amy shows to help the birdie in SA1 find Family, even though she knew trying to do that, could put herself in danger.
3. Amy clearly loves Sonic
In Sonic Adventure, it’s made clear Sonic is the one who inspired her and the one she wants to spend her time with. In Frontiers, Amy sticks up for Sonic when Sage claims that he is endangering the world. Later on, although she wants to go off to help others, but Amy fears Sonic and her will grow apart if she does. (Sonic recognizes that fear and reassures her he’ll always be there for her.)
4. Independence
In Sonic Adventure, after reuniting the bird with its family, Amy decides she can have her own adventures independently from Sonic every once in a while. In Frontiers, Amy decides to go on a trip and help those she can.
With all this said, I strongly believe Amy Rose is not out of character in Sonic Frontiers. She is simply involved to suit a more mature story. (The same way. The version of sonic portrayed in Sonic Adventure is different from the one in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic & The Black Knight, despite them both being in character.)
Feel free to have your own thoughts on the matter, but this is my perspective.
Simply YES
Couldn’t have said it better myself! Totally agree
I tottally agree with you
No energy. She has no energy. The end.
It can be complicated at times, but I understand most of her personality to be honest.
YOU LITERALLY EXPLAINED EVERY REASON I LOVE AMY SO MUCH, THIS IS AWESOME
Very well done. Great way to integrate animation in a longer video format!
IDW Amy
@@Sebo994I just realised that IDW Amy probably has the best balance in the entire franchise.
@@Sebo994Neh, She's ok in IDW but not so memorable or outstanding, with perhaps a few exceptions.
@@Xenox02-vu9rq but doesn't that mean that IDW Amy is the same Amy in the games??? I mean wasn'tit states IDW is canon?? sooo..what's the issue here?
I’ve always liked Amy since the beginning and her relatable moments were always fun.
To be fair, Sonic Adventure 2 was also a darker story, but it still had that 90s optimism and energy. That's what made the quieter moments like Shadow's death stand out since it gave the characters time to settle down.
06 also had a dark story... though half the cast was completely oblivious to it until the very end.
And its serious tone feels a lot more genuine than Frontiers, given they have the characters talk normally in SA2. Unlike Frontiers, where everyone sounding old and boring, because supposedly you can't tell a serious story using "cartoony voices."
True. And in that Sonic Adventure 2 game, Amy was the reason Shadow remembered Maria’s promise to him in the near end.
An interesting take I hadn't considered. Would definitely love to hear more of these. A lot of people in the community seem to have been arguing or wondering about the characterizations of the characters and what direction they'll go since Frontiers and Murder of Sonic came out.
Pixelrush tell's everyone his crush
Shh, don't tell anyone.
THANK YOU
btw with Amy hitting Sonic or others with hammers, that's because Sonic as a series is Japanese.... y'know how many times Luffy's crew in One Piece has beaten the snot out of him? Anime does this for a laugh and to have characters express a high level of emotion that simply can't be done in real life because... that's actual domestic violence. Nobody complains about any other Japanese media but Sonic gets hit by a cartoony hammer and its like, "THIS SERIES HAS JUMPED THE SHARK!!!"
Yes, people do complain about it. That is one of my (and many others) most hated tropes in fiction. Especially when the ones doing it never receive repercussions themselves despite deserving it. It’s the main reason I hate Nami.
@@EWOODJ Shonen (a lot of anime and japanese media in general) ain't for you then.
Nah! Sakura from naruto get the same hate like amy, always punching naruto for acting stupid on her. People also bash on sakura too from naruto, not just amy from sonic the hedgehog series. It iconic people hate sakura and amy as character, they be main characters be popular in Japan.

@@NineTwentyThreeTwentyThree Sorry! My writing is bad.
"I've never seen Amy as a psychotic fan girl and she never was."

Honestly one of the hardest lines to ever be dropped in a video essay about a character
Keeping her as a background character for most of it).
to be fair on archie, they had millions of characters
@@ChaddyFantomeFair point.
Am I seriously the only one who finds Sonic and Amy's dynamic (especially pre-Lost World) similar to that of Kermit The Frog and Miss Piggy?
Well said
Damn this new format of video is really interesting man, cant wait to see more.
I thought I had been alone in thinking this the entire time, and I'm glad to see I'm not :'D
But yeah, Amy has to be one of the most misunderstood characters in this franchise, if not THE most misunderstood.
Such an improvement /s
I've been seeing IDW and Frontiers being praised for getting Amy truly "back on the right track", but I honestly fail to see that.
Beautifully said
The best words I've seen in this comment section.

I appreciated amy the way she was
Yeah, I don’t care for the hollow shell she is now, just get rid of the character if they don’t want her the way she should be.
I always loved Amy character, wish they more Amy Rose merchandise.
Holy shit this comment is loooooong. Do not read this if you value your time
Well she’s kinda just well…it’s complicated. I actually do like her writing in frontiers and it kinda gets to other people. Think about it. Sonic doesn’t wanna help the kocos but after Amy convinces him he continues to do it and even encourages others to do the same
You must realize Amy is the Minnie Mouse to sonic so it’s not surprising they would have similar personalities.
The devs are the definition of not wanting to play with a double edged sword. Amy can either be the loudest character or the quietest. Nobody knows what incarceration you get.
Valid
With the direction there taking, sonic is becoming more of the more mature characters
I’m not saying Amy needs to be loud as well. BUT if they write her like they do in IDW it would be more balanced.
Amy's not weak, she's got a hammer! you don't mess with anybody with a big hammer!
Man over here speaking the truth.
I have always loved Amy since I was a kid she is energetic sweet caring and i loved how she was never scared to show her feelings for sonic also one thing I want to point out is that Amy's love is very kid like because she is a kid I feel like people don't understand that
Also I'm glad I found so many people who share the same opinions as me
I think its important to have her be a hot head whilst still being caring and nurturing.
And the weird thing is she normal in the murder of sonic the hedgehog.

TL;DR: Bring Amy back.
amy likes fortune cards
This was such a beautiful video, because Amy Rose is my favorite character in the series, too! She was pretty much the reason that I even got interested of the series in the first place. Hell, we were even kinda born around the same year. And I just now sort of realized (Not to a T.) that my personality kinda comes from her. Because, when I was little, I used to look up to her and wanted to be just like her.

I feel the same, sonamy forever ❤

@@RealgiselleReally? All I see from him is mostly Sonally?
@@JakeThehedgehog-m1x ...definitely not cyberstalking.
@@ChaddyFantome well sorry...I accidentally find you in every Amy videos looks like you are a fan of this character that much just like I am.
@JakeThehedgehog-m1x I made this post almost a year ago. How old even r u
I wonder what there gonna do her character in the future she seems to still have crush on sonic.
Also the IDW comics have been published since 2017, so I'm surprised they haven't done something unique or interesting or a story depends on her having a key role, maybe the closest was during the metal virus saga, but it wasn't great in my opinion.
that was a pretty good video good sir, while I enjoy frontiers aswell Amy's Character Definetly standed out in a bad way compared to how knuckles and Tails was
No matter what Amy will still be in my number one
I have been thinking all of this for a while, but never could work it out clearly. You hit every nail on the head! Like Amy did with goofy
Finally someone says it! Agreed with everything you said in this video.
I think not, we let the fans mess with the franchise enough.
Awesome Video! A character that might understand Amy is her Nintendo counterpart.
Nintendo counterpart?
Yes. Sonic's games are copying Zelda Games. And I think her Nintendo counterpart is Princess Agitha.

I agree with what you said there. Totally! I like the original Amy a lot better.
That episode also reveals the Chrelen relationship ship.
I feel like a lot of people got into the sonic franchise through tv shows, for me it was sonic boom.
You mean the same Amy who has a lifesize Sonic doll and is worthless without the hammer? That Amy?
@dragondelsur5156 honestly, I didn't recall that.
Put the nail right on the head! 💖
As one fan said 2 years ago, "who and what Sonic is, varies from fan to fan".
And the same can be said for his friends too.
I enjoyed the video, I would like to see more like this, reminds me of PJ and his takes.
FINALLY!! SOMEONE GETS IT!!! 💪What I'm trying to say.
Amy will always be the Pinkie Pie of the Sonic universe to me
@Pixelrush do you read the comics? because that is where she is maturing through development and where the full story and lore is. the comics has way cooler stuff that hasn't been shown in animation or video games... like the fact until recent, amy was technically a literal child(10) who was transformed into an semi-adult body(16) of how we know her design today, by a wish made on "the ring of acorns" because she was told she was too young to fight. amy literally started out as your stereotypical over-obsessive fangirl in the comics but like many fans of stuff out there, there are the mentally unstable ones who don't take a moment to think "is this really a sane thing to do?" amy for the longest time was possessive of sonic which is one of the many reasons he constantly ran away from her(also he wasn't her boyfriend). if i remember correctly amy is now in her 20s physically with her mind in the late teens, which is why we see her more mature mentally and less obsessive and chasing sonic, which is why sonic no longer runs away from her.
sonic has always been an intense and kinda an all-over-the-place story. for example technically eggman as we know him today is technically a bio-droid upload of robo-robotnik who is an alternate universe version where he roboticized himself to get stronger(which worked) after a fail plan to roboticize the freedom fighters...which just made the freedom fighters stronger. robo-robotnik ended up getting destroyed transferred his consciousness to a space station, made a new body robotnik2.0 transferring into that, after being destroyed again, he had multiple higher advanced bodies prepared as a contingency and that's how he became the eggman we know today.
The Archie comics aren’t canon.

Amy's our goddess!

It's so sad because I'm An Amy fan to I agree
I think what happened with Amy was that Sonic Heroes exaggerated her characterization so badly that it kinda killed Amy's reputation as character for really long time.
And it wasn't even that bad of a portrayal, that game just exposed how little faith this fanbase had for Amy.
I think Frontiers just didn't get a lot of time for devs to make "action" scenes for tails, knuckles & amy. Then they played harder into the "dialogue in digital form" format.
When they mainly express themselves through dialogues, Ian's forced to write them a lot more introspectively (he got parachuted in halfway to, I guess, "save" the story with what animations they can cook up)
I do like the final product that is Frontiers, seeing an introspection-focused story from the cast once in 20 years or so is def better than shallow writing. I doubt they will repeat the mistake of underbudgeting the animations for sonic games moving forward. Fingers crossed.
Amy is my favorite sonic character
Running.
@BJSolar02 Yes! You totally get it!

Cosmo sighted.
So what I'm getting at is that you think it's out of character for a character to be sad and brought down by something genuinely tragic and heartbreaking.
I mean...yeah. Amy's been optimistic no matter what. Frontiers is hardly the worst thing she's experienced.
