Nice tip for cleaning the mixer!
I like that you showed a mix that was too wet also, so we could compare.
Nice job!
I'm a landscaper down in Sussex and brick/blockwork is something I do on a regular basis but I've got lots of really good tips from your video's, never too old to learn! And I like the way you present them, thanks again!
Glad to hear you have picked up a few tips from my videos 😁 I will be doing the landscaping on the house in a few months so may need some tips from yourself when it comes around 🤙🏼🧱
@@RodianBuilds A pleasure , I suspect you will make a fine job of it without outside intervention!
Miss you so much man... I really enjoyed your work on the channel.
Good video as always. I always gauge sand and cement with a bucket and scrape the top off with a piece of wood or a 600 level. Same colour every time guaranteed 100%. The way I was taught 20 year ago. 👍🧱
Good, fool proof way of doing it 😁👍🏻
Problem occurs when the labourer gets confused with 4 and 5 though 🤣🧱👍
🤣🤣 I bet
Hi Rodian. I can see you know your stuff where hod carrying and knocking up is concerned. I've been hoddying for 20 years and no doubt, it's a semi skilled job. Of course being a bricklayer takes a lot longer to master and I've worked with some great bricklayers in that time. But hoddying has it's merits also. Keep up the good work sir and these tutorials are well appreciated..
Rodians the only person that helps me with bricklaying, keep it up mate🙏❤️
loved this - wish I'd watched it before hiring the mixer haha, gold for the tips on cleaning it after. Perfect description for how to mix up tho, including slo mo; you have the skills in all departments! Seriously, TY
probably the best video tutorial out .thanks
Thanks for taking the time to show this process in detail. Great video!
Ji iwi due ididkwiwiI
Only just found this. Great video. Entertaining, instructive, friendly. very helpful. Cheers.
That start made me smile ! 😁
Cheers Mate, Dead on ! Will be doing this next week Thks
Brilliant effort on the safety aspect mate. Good to see - theres not enough of this on how to vids on UA-cam. Also great quality instructional video. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the tips I might have to do my own mixing in a while
Watching here from phillipines my friend
Love your vids stuff you wont learn to much about in college i just want to learn everything learning how to use a dumpy level next week keep up the good work
+1 sub from me after watching your vids for the last week or two. Great to watch a highly skilled tradesman who takes this amount of time and effort to produce content like this. Thank you sir.
And that you for the positive comment. I feel like it's a win win for me as I love building and filming. As long as I keep enjoying making them I'll keep the content coming. 👍🏻😁
Mate watching your vids makes me wish I chose your trade!
Masterclass first scene, hilarious nice one Rodian
Excellent video - first one I see that is that well explained.
Cheers Joe. I tried to be as informative as I could, explaining how I do it and what I look for. Glass you liked it 👍🏻😁
Watched this video a few weeks ago in preparation for hiring a mixer, hired it yesterday and watched this video again after using it, it makes much more sense now and easier to follow after actually using the mixer. Thanks mate!!
thanks Rodian 40 years at the maintenance game and still need advice on a mixer hard to get it right every time all the best buddy great job Just found you and will follow as long as its goes
Thanks Ivan, appreciate the comment. I'm learning all the time as well! Glad you're enjoying the videos. Think we'll be here a while 🤣
Cheers for that, very helpful. I only have a small wall to build in the garden so will check out the other videos on how to mix without a mixer
11:57 'Dunno what that was' That was funny mate :)
Great vids, really helpful for a complete novice like me, btw I live in Denmark and the blocks I have are 490 mm long and I need to cut 135mm to get half block bond, you mentioned this is an earlier video
I like to use buckets 4:1ratio using buckets .... The compo will be the same shade all through out the job. Love the channel kidda
A helpful and practical guide. Thanks.
A clean mixer is a efficient mixer!
There's a video on UA-cam where the guy's job is to detonate concrete that was left to dry inside the mixer truck.
Love the thumbnail 😆
Just got a load of stones for retaining wall and needed to learn about cement. Thanks for all the tips including the mixer cleaning.
No worries, glad to be of some help 👍🏻😁🧱
Thanks for your great videos.
Your videos are very well explained with great tips.
I've never built a wall before, but now I need to build walls and two sheds .... I need all the help I can get!
Awesome mate! Planning to build next summer! Big fan!
Only just found your channel, but it is really helpful, and your vids are well made.
Well done, and thank you!
Fantastic video mate 👍
I was impressed and learned good from it as I have to do a long and 2 metre high retaining wall soon to make a driveway thanks
Hi pal. Fantastic video.
Can you use this machine to make concrete.
Also what is the ratio to make concrete.
Also do you any videos on how to make concrete mix...
Haha you're mixer looks brand new compared to my 25yr old mixer, but it still does a cracking job.
REALLY good lesson
Hello there
Thanks for your time and knowledge
I'm starting nvq level 1 September bricklaying
And learning loads from you

Loving the channel mate, nice amount of detail. Perfect length video thanks.
Cheers buddy. Appreciate it. Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos
Good Knowledge Thanks!!
Really enjoyed this video but I got taught a different way of mixing cement with a mixer today I used 2 bags of gravel 1 bag of sand and half bag of cement and a bit of water
Good video and such a likeable guy.
Great video pal. Just found your channel and subscribed. Very informative and on point. Love the banter at the beginning. Best to have a laugh when you're working. looking forward to watching more of them
Welcome buddy 👍🏻😁 Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos. I'm all for a good laugh as I work and I find it helps het the best out of people. Plenty more to come pal 😁
God bless 🎉❤
I'm no builder I'm just building a new shed. 9x6 meters. My mixer lives in the garden has done for 3 years with a selco bag over it. Cleaned out with a few bits of rubble and a hose off inside. It's still like new. I've built 1 work shop already and 2 garden walls... say 20ton mixed for that and I'm at 35ton for my current build... foundations are a foot deep due to the weight of my machines. And my footing are about 18 inch. Mixer should last for years to come
Thanks mate great video
very detailed thanks
Sick intro!
Great tips man, thanks!
Waiting for my work to pick up in this aspect on slab laying and my back to sort it self out
spot on my Brewery is in good hands now....NIGHTSKY BREWERY.
Great video, how would you go about adding black dye? add the liquid to your water before any sand/cement? also what mix would you suggest 4/1 or 5/1 for blue engineering? Cheers
good video
assuming you are not on a job with a labourer on continuous mixing work, what do you do with the mixer between batches?
Coincidentally I fill with water to the exact same point you showed, I then leave that running between batches so I inevitably then start the next batch with "cementitious" water - does not seem to make a huge different to the colour consistency though.
I do not clean between batches as creates far to much mess to be cleared up / disposed of
As a diy bodger I can't emphasise enough what a difference making gear of the right consistency is. Tapping bricks level on a dryish bed is virtually impossible and bricks sliding along like Torville and Dean when too wet makes you question your manhood. You know the missus had a sneaky peak while you went the bog and was thinking "time for a proper man in this house".
THE GEAR MUST BE RIGHT!!!
A hose pipe with a gun is the best way to rinse. If you forget to clean from the previous day, then load it with type 1 or ballast and water and leave it turning for a bit. Tip the drum to angle where the contents clean the front of the drum and gradually tip the contents out. Rince out with clen water.
Better than Stu Compton and Hampshire Brickwork put together!
Cheers buddy, appreciate the compliment 👍🏻😁
better music for sure LOL!
Ha ha cheers bud 😁👍🏻
Leave stu alone haha, very good channel though had to subscribe. The amount of feb in that mix 😱
very good!!
when you say put half bag of cement in, is that a 25kg bag of cement ? when I was 16 I was the labourer for a builder and used to mix the cement and concrete but as years have gone on and now a cabinet maker building a victorian greenhouse I have forgotten to a degree what mix I need, do you use the same mix ratio for concrete for footings?
Once you have made a mix but not finished with the mixer do you just leave it until your ready for your next mix?
I would do, if it's a hot day put some water in and keep it spinning.
Cant beat the Irish spin dryer
Awesome fella,
What trowel, could you recommend, that helps,if you have repetitive strain, I'm building 9 by 4 block on flat, love your videos 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Which type of cement do you use? Is it Ordinary Portland Cement (AKA OPC)?
I am only doing a few garden brickwork, but just want to ask where do you get rid of the water?
I had literally just finished watching a video where the dude was shoving a stick of Rebar into the drum to scape off the cement which was stuck to the bottom of the drum as a result of not adding water first. He was extremely confident while reassuring us that it would be fine to do the same. Thank you for restoring my faith in the continuation of the human race. You're awesome.
another great video, i have to invest in a mixer
Thanks buddy. You should definitely think about it. Thay make life so much easier!!
Thanks Rodian, great video! Can I ask which class of cement did you use?
One Viking in construction 😹
Hi mate, I'm currently doing a self build. At the moment we are just out of the ground and I was wondering what ratio exactly is a lean mix for a cavity fill. I keep getting mixed messages so your recommendation will be highly appreciated.
Good mix
Cheers bud 😁👍🏻
best butter we call it in Bolton rodian. a joy to spread.
🤣 best butter. I like it! I'll have to remember that one and add it to the list
Haha you are funny. Great tutorial! Do you have one on mixing lime mortar? It is very different and can have no portland cement. It needs to be loads drier than cement. 1 lime to 3 sand only. Do you mix all the dry stuff first without water so the fine lime is evenly mixed with the course sand before the water comes in? It has to be hard to work, a bit dry and crumbly, not even as soft as dough because otherwise it shrinks too much and cracks
Great vid cheers m8
We make it wet in Australia. After all it can push up to 40 degrees in summer.
I worked out in cairns for a couple of months about 10 years ago. Man it was so hot!!!! Stunning country! I'd love to go back!!
The only problem I had mixing gobo was putting too much water in during early winter. Bare in mind I was used to making a summer mix
Putting too much water in is a common problem. I do it every now and then 🤦♂️
need to pull you up here - I get the half bag, but how big is a shovel (of sand)? you need to be using 4-6 level buckets of sand:1 bucket cement...
I like the boots
So for what kind of mixture is this part for
I wonder if that additive is beat juice based.
Chipped out a few mixer barrels. Custom silicone ear plugs and a set of ear muffs made it so it liveable. Worse than fifth row at the Stones concert.
I was wondering if you can put stones in the cement mix?
Rodian, can you give more detail on the ratio? As I understand it: 10 shovels of sand to 1/2 bag cement is 5:1 as there are two shovels in 1/2 bag of cement . So if I used a bucket it would be five buckets of sand to one bucket of cement. Is that correct or would it be 10 buckets to one bucket? Hang on Ill have to take my shoes off as I have run out of fingers! If the sand is really wet it will bulk so an experienced eye would check the colour.Would putting the cement in the plasticiser/water first mix the compo (pug, muck best butter) evenly and quicker with less messing about?
The ratio of 5:1 works with any amount 5 buckets of sand to 1 bucket of cement or 5 spoonfuls of sand to 1 spoonful of cement all the same just depends how much muck you want. I always put the plastersizer in the water first then pour it into the mixer then do 5 sand half a bag of cement, let it mix, add water then 5 more sand. Comes out lovely every time
Thanks Rodian sorry about the piss poor question, came out nothing like it was supposed to - thinking more about if the sand is wet how do you allow for bulkingreally enjoying the vids thanks very much for posting
Can any experts answer this. I'm making hollow blocks using this cement mixer. How wet should the mix be? What is the best ratio of aggregates and cement for making 140x190x390mm hollow blocks to build a fence wall with. My cement is 42.5N strength and my aggregates are river sand
If you didnt use plastisizer, how much lime would you put in that 5:1 mix? What 3 part ratio would that be?
lSame as the cemene ie 5-1-1
@@johnclark7049 You mean 1:1:5 (cement:lime:sand)?
Is that pink stuff like ferry liquid. I was taught to use ferry liquid but not on site.
William Peckham I was told fairy liquid weakens the mix..
Could you tell me the name of red liquid?
homeowner laying cement blocks for the first can't keep the mortar joins the same thickness between the rows Help?
I once used a juice drink to wet mix.. It was a touch too dry, I was out of water and couldn’t be arsed to walk to the tap... the Brickies couldn’t understand where the orange smell was coming from..hahaha
LoL do this all the time with Volvic!!!
How many lbs is each bag of cement?
Why are the proportions of sand cent mix completely different to what it says on the cement packs?
Where are you from England I think?????
When do you put the magic in
Keep well
Am I missing something? It says half a bag is 4 shovels, so a 5:1 mix would need 20 shovels of sand!
At 3:50, it says a bag contains 4 shovels, but he uses half a bag for every 10 shovels of sand. [5:1]
sorry mate i disagree ... gauged with buckets. as long as you can count to five you will be okay and every mix will be same colour i can guarantee. been building for over 30 yrs never had a colour change due to people not loading same shovel fulls. just a thought matey.
Gauged with buckets is a very good way of doing it. I had one labourer who managed to fuck it up though 🤣 Somehow only put half the dust in and came over with a Barrow full of completely different colour muck. Thanks for the comment buddy 👍🏻😁
buckets is more accurate. Best thing to do is keep the same guy mixing on a job.
Shovel is 2X faster than a bucket system, if you use half a bag of cement each time you can't miss if you can count the same amount of shovel loads each batch....and the cement bags are only half as big as when I first startd....but i will conceed that using a cup or larry pot...or a bucket for measurement when using lime or oxide, is worth the xtra time and effort.
@@andymac9733 Nothing worse than training up new labradors these days...they are on their devices at every chance.
Or just say fuck bricklaying and get a real job that doesn’t get sand in ya pockets every fuckin day
where can i buy a javelin then?
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:18 🏗️ This video is part of a four-part series on mixing mortar. This episode focuses on how to mix mortar in a mixer safely and efficiently.
01:11 🚧 The mixer used is a Bell mini mix 150, which is introduced with some wear and tear. It's essential to avoid putting hands or arms inside the mixer while it's running.
02:06 🚰 Before mixing, a bucket of water mixed with mortar plasticizer is prepared to improve workability and resistance to frost.
03:47 🏗️ The proper mix ratio for this demonstration is 5 shovel fulls of sand for every half bag of cement, with appropriate water added to achieve the right consistency.
07:30 🧱 The ideal consistency of the mortar should be a slow-rolling, fluffy texture like Mr. Whippy ice cream, with some small cracks visible when it turns on itself.
09:15 💦 Overly wet mortar should be avoided, as it becomes sloppy and challenging to work with. To correct it, small amounts of sand and cement can be added to maintain the desired color and consistency.
11:20 🧹 Cleaning the mixer can be done effectively by adding bricks or debris, along with a bit of water, and letting it run for a while before brushing it out.
12:24 📅 This video is part 1 of 4, where the other episodes will cover mixing mortar in different ways, such as in a bucket, a wheelbarrow, and by hand on the floor.

I love this guys vids..but I’m surprised at the feb he’s using
Why are you surprised?
Rodian Builds not a knock mate, I just find the super concentrate stuff is way better and more cost effective. Whatever works
Back in the 70s we always put washing up liquid in (before febmix)
I keep a hose handy and oil before and after each use, mind is china come harbor freight but works well, sevongbobe, I've fixed 15 yards before,I use stone, sand and portland, hot water makes it set real fast folks, never pour more than u can handle,,,I normally get truck mix when on large jobs but mixer had made me big money, and on sat morning no mud trucks working,, help is a bonus folks..if u can find someone, people of today are so God dam lazy,.. mixer replaced a person, and the bobcat does the same, I pour alot of concrete, but mostly from redi mix. Trucks.
That size Bell mixer goes better with one paddle cut one out mix the cement in faster
