- This is our way we find best to mix a mortar mix for bricklaying. There are many different ratios to mix mortar so its best to check with the an engineer architect or a qualified bricklayer.
Hope this guide of a standard mix helps you.

Even with a bucket my mate never gets it the same colour, I've nicknamed him 50 shades of grey.
🤣🤣🤣 brilliant 👍
The side by side comparison for consistency of the mortar and the separation of an undermixed mix is the best I've seen on you tube. I'm a diyer and you have just corrected something I've been doing wrong for years. Thank you for your in depth videos. Much appreciated

Great video, a month or 2 before Xmas 2022 I started to help a mate who needed a labourer for 2 weeks, it’s now nearly the end of May and those 2 weeks still haven’t ended, I’m a spring chicken aged 37 and never laboured for a builder and every day is a school day haha love watching videos as helpful as this one just to make sure I keep my ‘skills’ on top form, at the end of the day it’s my job to make his job easier, love working my arse off for the first couple of hours so I can get in front of him then I can spend the rest of the day being in front and having him loaded with bricks/flags etc and taking it steady haha
What you said there is spot on work your arse off get in front and then step back a bit .Thats what a lot of labourers dont understand. Good luck and your definitely doing it the right way with the right attitude great see

I tended to 3 brickies in New York, came into work half hour before they started, made all the difference, KP the great videos coming, 🇨🇮🇨🇮

Great video. What do you do with the crap from the mixer when you clean it out at somebodies house if you haven't got a skip or waste land?

You just remove all the mortar with a trowel add the water and gently empty it on to the base each day it just drains straight through 👍
Thankyou lads!

Cheers fellas, I'd always wondered how to get it fluffy and it's cos I've been tipping my mix out way early 🙄
Glad to help joe 👍
Plasticiser is very useful if you have a slow bricklayer who only needs one mix an hour ! Water was fine when I were a lad and three brickies would slice yer ears off for keeping them waiting ! your mortar should start to fall right in the mixer the moment you hit it with the gauge pot.
Nothing more frustrating than waiting for mixes i get that 👍
Hiya, a really useful vid. I need to relay my patio steps as the slabs came loose, thought I'd mix by hand in a wheelbarrow and having tried that today I realised that's nuts! Lol
So as it'll be the first time using a mixer, I wanted to ask if the time for mixing 10-15 minutes does that depend on how much you're mixing? I'll probably start with counting shovel loads. Thanks. 👍🏼
Yes depends on a lot of things dont add to much water let it mix 👍
Use sharp sand under the patio.
Im building my house in south west of ireland. My block layer was finishing gables on sunday. He had a different young fella with him this time and he blocked approx 100 blocks in the rain and the mortar now looks abit sandy and you can scrape it back with a nail altough it seems still fairly set. Do you think i should get him to rip to 100 blocks down and do it again, iv a feeling it wasnt mixed great anyway and aswel as that the rain washed the cement out of it. I presume there still would be no fear of it
Presuming the mix has been done correctly if its run in the rain .
Just flush it all up with more mixed cement should be fine .
Good luck 👍
some good tips👍
a question about sand. your sand is damp, does the quantity vary if it is dry, like powder.
I ask because the bag of sand left in my garage has fully dried out, no moisture in it at all, so do I have to adjust the quantity of sand to suit? or should I add water to the sand first to dampen it before I gauge it and add to the cement for a mortar mix?
Thanks David
The sand amount and gauge is the same you will just need to add more water than in damp sand 👍
Great video. I was going to use flow point to point my patio but I’m thinking of just doing sand and cement with a mortar gun. What ratio of sand and cement would I need to make it buff coloured? Do I need white cement? Cheers
Id use a 3:1 mix and add buff cement liquid dye
That’s great. Thanks for the quick response. Cheers
Hi, my house brick work has been repainted with a 3mm key so it’s falling out and turning to dust. What advice do you have for me, key it back 20mm and use this mix to point, or do I need to know anything else to make sure it sticks to the old mortar?
Disc it out as deep as a mini disc cutter will go.
Hose down all the bricks and joints .Allow to dry .damp joint and re point with mortar and bush the mortar in to the joint with a jointing bar or trowel.
Good luck 👍
If I do a small hobby project in the garden can I use washing-up liquid for the plasticiser ?
I wouldn't recommend it .it effects the durability of the mortar. Plastizer is cheap enough so id use that myself Andrew 👍👌
So different here in West Oz..if you let it mix that long the brickie wouud be out of mud ....and we just put dishwasher liquid in the mix ...lemon ,,smells better ..on a good run we lay a 1000 a day ..to cold over there, so different,,,,p.s and lots of cold beer ..🍻🍻🍻🍻
Clive sounds great mate that especially the cold beer .yea its to cold to wet here in wales its shit .Good luck to you mate 👍 😉

What would the mix be for laying a cement fillet on the inside floor of a sectional concrete garage? And what would I add to the mix? Pva?
Never done it sorry
In very exposed areas could you use 1 :3 mix or would that be too strong
Bit strong that michael normally for underground work that ratio.
Above ground anything from 4-1 to 6-1 is usually standard. 👍
Nice one lads , great tip Brad we always wash as we go . Our mixer is a 2008 and still going strong 💪🏽🧱👍🏼

we got 110 for safety then puts a 240v extension right next to it, all's good until you accidentally miss with the hose and soak the extension, which should also be completely unwound, not left coiled, good vid by the way boys😂👍

Love your videos good quality work no point having a 110 mixer if you are going to run a 240 cable to the mixer 110 box should be at the power point and run 110 cable to the mixer all the best boys 👍👍
Fair paint i suppose cant argue with that Rob .Good point 👍💯
Why not, the point of 110v is that it’s unlikely to kill you so the mixer is safe. The transformer can be in any convenient position!
@@andyxox4168 Because you still have a 240 volt cable leading right up to the mixer which completely negates the point of making a building site safer by using 110 volt equipment and cables
@@Mike-fx4wk 240V distribution, 110V utilisation … it’s quite within the regulations, renders the equipment being used as ‘safe’ and negates the need for heavy cables to carry the 110V.
@@andyxox4168 I see so it reduces risk of death from the equipment ? They're not bothered about the cables running up to the equipment ?
In the US when I try to find plasticizer they don't have the Bostik plasticizer. They have other products that appear to be the same. Kind of frustrating because I'd like to get what you use. Makes life simpler.
I get your problem try your US product probably the same 👍💯
I got told and have been using a small lid full of dishwashing detergent in an emergency for small backyard jobs. Is this allright?
@bernardmarsh4133
It's weakens the mortar so I wouldn't recommend it 👍
Can I just add that different bricks require weaker mixes the London bricks with deep frogs have a six and one mix so if theirs any settlement in the foundations the joint would crack and not the brick
Spot on Reg think i mentioned different mix ratios in the description its a guide as i said .
Good luck mate thanks
Justin 👍
Any reason why you cannot add the plasticiser to the water and let that mix first? Likely get a quicker and more homogenous mix?
Thats fine Billy no problem with that 👍👌👌
Cheers guys
Will need to watch again and take notes.
I’m always worried about my concrete drying to quick.
How long does it take before it sets?
Takes a full day to set passed 50% then its cures for about a month to set fully .we normally use concrete within an hour of mixing it all

No one seems to be able to answer this question. How do you colour match your mortar to the old mortar in the case of bricking up an external doorway.
You cant RC because you dont no the mix ratio. Also colour of the sand used and the brand of cement would make a difference in colour. So unless you no the answer to all that your not gonna colour match .You just do your best RC .
Good luck.
Justin 👍
Great video , just wondered if there's a rule of thumb as to how many kgs of sand and cement to order per brick .
Michael
You are taking me back now to my college days .Yes to answer answer your there is a formula to work out sand cement mortar but im affraid i just cant bloody remember sorry mate 👍
Haha no problem 👍 I can always nip back to back to b and q
@Michael J .
Michael as a guide 1000 bricks is 1 ton of sand and about 12 bags of cement. It does depend on the bricks though ie frog in the brick is more mortar. Can't remember the exact maths on it ill have to dig out my nash books and take a look 🤣🤣👍🧱
Cheers for your reply , really enjoy all the videos keep them coming 👍
@Michael J .
🤣 your welcome and thanks appreciate it michael 👍
Can you use sbr in the mix ?
Billy yes you can in fact sbr has some very good advantages to use it such as addded strength to the mix waterproofing and reduced water per and reduced effloresence. Use it more in paving than bricklaying really though. 👍
Could sharp sand be used instead?
Not on this type of bricklaying
How much water did you put in to start off with tho
That all depends on the water content of the sand being used .
Usually id the sand isnt to wet we add around half a bucket of water and add more when needed
If you didnt use plastisizer, how much lime would you put in that 4:1 mix? What 3 part ratio would that be?
Id go.4 sand 1 cement 1 lime for bricklaying but there are .any ratios you could even go 6 or 5 sand depending on strength of mortar 👍
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Agree with you.
1:1:6 would be something around class 3 mortar, or M4 strenght class.
But for higher strenght bricks, a mix of 1:1/2 (half):4 would be more suitable and that would give class 2 mortar, or M10 strenght class.
Do you know the compressive strengt of the bricks you useed in this video? Its designated in "MPa" and could vary from 5MPa, 10MPa, 15MPa, 20MPa
@@picajoool think they are around 75/mm2 for the bricks .
A lot more to bricklaying than people think isn't there 🤣👍
How much water was in the mixer at the beginning for that full mix please?
What's the smallest mix you can make in there? Is 1 bucket of sand not enough for some reason?
Hi Henry
Water all depends on how dry or wet your sand is so check that first. You can always add more water if needed .Also you can mix one bucket of sand if you wanted but thats probably the minimum in this mixer .
Hope that helps 👍
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping yes that helps a lot thanks. I'm buying one on Tuesday from bandq new stock comes in. They said they price match Bradfords building supplies £430 and then I get extra 10% off with trade card on top. Thats £387 brand new. Currently paddle mixing in a bucket and not getting it as good. Have to add to much water in the beginning make a slurry then pour that into a bucket and add more sand cement to brink it back. Still takes 10 - 15 mins and not as good.
@@E69apeTheMatrix420
Well thats a good price there i think .great mixers had a few in my time

If you were measuring the water, how much would you add to the mixture shown? It looks like here you used the "TLAR Method" ["that looks about right"]. Alas, that works only with experience by one who knows what he's doing -- and not with a noobie like me.
The measure of water is a difficult one .
It all depends on how wet or dry your sand is.
Id say a a little at a time easy to add but cant take away.dont forget the mix has to mix the plastersizer helps this process. Hope that helps.
Justin 👍
You already added the water but didn't say how much water?
All depends on the water content of the sand on site .id start of with a little water and build it up easy to add water you can't take it away hope that helps 👍

OPC Why? Why not motar mix that has lime in it? Does the plasticiser have a retarder in it? I noticed your old mix had not begun to set. I could see using OPC for concrete block, but looks like normal clay bricks and why not normal motar mix? What is the temperature there, looks a bit cool with all the heavy clothes. Is the temperature affecting the set time?
Opc is a common cement to mix mortar or concrete thats why its used .
You can add lime to the mix if you want to or instructed by the architect.
The plastizer has no retardant in it.
Yep the temperature here in wales at that time was cold and wet 👍
What does the plasterciser do? What's it function?
It makes the mortor mix more workable or fluffy as we say in the trade 👍👊
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping So the mortar becomes more smoother, softer, creamier? Is there any structural purposes/benefits? Also is it a necessary ingredient? Is the mortar weaker without it?
@@ya00007 it does stop mortar cracking but if you add to much it will weaken the mix .If you want to lay bricks its a great benefit or if you dont want it in the mix use lime in the mix as that does very similar makes the mix more workable.

Sand cement mix no lime 👍
Suppose you have no cement mixer and you just have a board like me. How would that get fluffy 🤔
Keep turning over on the board until it gets fluffy just takes a bit of work 👍
A good thing to remember you can always add water you cant take it out. I used to take a trowel and take a trowels worth of mud and turn it upside-down and most of it should stick to the trowel

Straight portland not sure what that means .we used ordinary portland cement 👍
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Same thing. Never use ordinary Portland cement as it is too hard. Portland cement is for sidewalks, etc. Mortar has lime in it and is for brickwork. A lime mortar for stone work. You never want to use a mortar that is harder than the brick or stone.

4.1 what you building manholes in engineering bricks.....
Nar its wales gary 6.1 or 5.1 here and the weather just pits the cement so 4 .1 is good.
3.1 for below ground work 👍
What no dish soap? The UK bricky's I know use dish soap to provide workability for there mortar. I would never do that.
Yea lots do and its good but not the correct product to use so we dont use it 👍
Plasticiser should be mixed with gauging water and a 5/1 mix is more appropriate to above ground brickwork … still gets the job done in a non professional environment.
I have found over many years here in wales which is really exposed to rain and wind that 5/1 mortar is a bit weak and pits over time .A 4/ 1 mix is more suitable the water all depends on how much water is in the sand when delivered. So summer we add more water and opposite for winter in the professional environment 👍
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping interesting but don’t confuse trade with professional, grouts and mortars in critical applications are carefully tested and carefully gauged to ensure the correct performance, similar rules apply to concrete mixed for critical purposes including testing of every batch before placing and after placing. (background included turbine foundations, machinery grouting and other heavy engineering)

Get a real mixer and all but a couple inches of a 5 gal bucket of water, 15 -16 heaping shovels of sand one bag of motor. Thousands of pallets of motor bags I'm my time.
Keep on dogging um in
Will do 👍
Could you be really pedantic by gauging the water and timing the mixer?
Not really as the water depends on the water content in the sand .
Also to time mixing causes to many air bubbles which weakens the mortar so you have a point there 👍
