Can I just add that different bricks require weaker mixes the London bricks with deep frogs have a six and one mix so if theirs any settlement in the foundations the joint would crack and not the brick
Plasticiser is very useful if you have a slow bricklayer who only needs one mix an hour ! Water was fine when I were a lad and three brickies would slice yer ears off for keeping them waiting ! your mortar should start to fall right in the mixer the moment you hit it with the gauge pot.
Many of these comments dont understand that mortar must have workability to set bricks to the line swiftly. Without plasticized mortar you cannot manipulate bricks with your hand as the mortar will not move under pressure. Its just wet sand consistency andvwould be called grout for setting heavy stone. We only use lime in North America for workability 1 to 1 cement and often use admixes for setting time, increasing adhesion, fast or slow cure.
@radiotests Interesting a 1 and 1 never heard of that before but all countries have there own methods. I have used lime especially on older repair work here in the UK. Thanks for sharing and good luck out there 👍
You cant RC because you dont no the mix ratio. Also colour of the sand used and the brand of cement would make a difference in colour. So unless you no the answer to all that your not gonna colour match .You just do your best RC . Good luck. Justin 👍
That all depends on the water content of the sand being used . Usually id the sand isnt to wet we add around half a bucket of water and add more when needed
In the US when I try to find plasticizer they don't have the Bostik plasticizer. They have other products that appear to be the same. Kind of frustrating because I'd like to get what you use. Makes life simpler.
There's my mistake, to dry after a couple of minutes then adding more water, then it all broke up when I was haunshing monoblocks. Thanks for the lesson.
OPC Why? Why not motar mix that has lime in it? Does the plasticiser have a retarder in it? I noticed your old mix had not begun to set. I could see using OPC for concrete block, but looks like normal clay bricks and why not normal motar mix? What is the temperature there, looks a bit cool with all the heavy clothes. Is the temperature affecting the set time?
Opc is a common cement to mix mortar or concrete thats why its used . You can add lime to the mix if you want to or instructed by the architect. The plastizer has no retardant in it. Yep the temperature here in wales at that time was cold and wet 👍
How much water was in the mixer at the beginning for that full mix please? What's the smallest mix you can make in there? Is 1 bucket of sand not enough for some reason?
Hi Henry Water all depends on how dry or wet your sand is so check that first. You can always add more water if needed .Also you can mix one bucket of sand if you wanted but thats probably the minimum in this mixer . Hope that helps 👍
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping yes that helps a lot thanks. I'm buying one on Tuesday from bandq new stock comes in. They said they price match Bradfords building supplies £430 and then I get extra 10% off with trade card on top. Thats £387 brand new. Currently paddle mixing in a bucket and not getting it as good. Have to add to much water in the beginning make a slurry then pour that into a bucket and add more sand cement to brink it back. Still takes 10 - 15 mins and not as good.
Billy yes you can in fact sbr has some very good advantages to use it such as addded strength to the mix waterproofing and reduced water per and reduced effloresence. Use it more in paving than bricklaying really though. 👍
we got 110 for safety then puts a 240v extension right next to it, all's good until you accidentally miss with the hose and soak the extension, which should also be completely unwound, not left coiled, good vid by the way boys😂👍
Michael You are taking me back now to my college days .Yes to answer answer your there is a formula to work out sand cement mortar but im affraid i just cant bloody remember sorry mate 👍
@Michael J . Michael as a guide 1000 bricks is 1 ton of sand and about 12 bags of cement. It does depend on the bricks though ie frog in the brick is more mortar. Can't remember the exact maths on it ill have to dig out my nash books and take a look 🤣🤣👍🧱
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Agree with you. 1:1:6 would be something around class 3 mortar, or M4 strenght class. But for higher strenght bricks, a mix of 1:1/2 (half):4 would be more suitable and that would give class 2 mortar, or M10 strenght class. Do you know the compressive strengt of the bricks you useed in this video? Its designated in "MPa" and could vary from 5MPa, 10MPa, 15MPa, 20MPa
So different here in West Oz..if you let it mix that long the brickie wouud be out of mud ....and we just put dishwasher liquid in the mix ...lemon ,,smells better ..on a good run we lay a 1000 a day ..to cold over there, so different,,,,p.s and lots of cold beer ..🍻🍻🍻🍻
If you were measuring the water, how much would you add to the mixture shown? It looks like here you used the "TLAR Method" ["that looks about right"]. Alas, that works only with experience by one who knows what he's doing -- and not with a noobie like me.
The measure of water is a difficult one . It all depends on how wet or dry your sand is. Id say a a little at a time easy to add but cant take away.dont forget the mix has to mix the plastersizer helps this process. Hope that helps. Justin 👍
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Same thing. Never use ordinary Portland cement as it is too hard. Portland cement is for sidewalks, etc. Mortar has lime in it and is for brickwork. A lime mortar for stone work. You never want to use a mortar that is harder than the brick or stone.

@radiotests
Interesting a 1 and 1 never heard of that before but all countries have there own methods.
I have used lime especially on older repair work here in the UK.
Thanks for sharing and good luck out there 👍
Thank you great video, I’ll definitely start wearing my mask as well 👍
Thanks 👍
No one seems to be able to answer this question. How do you colour match your mortar to the old mortar in the case of bricking up an external doorway.
You cant RC because you dont no the mix ratio. Also colour of the sand used and the brand of cement would make a difference in colour. So unless you no the answer to all that your not gonna colour match .You just do your best RC .
Good luck.
Justin 👍
How much water did you put in to start off with tho
That all depends on the water content of the sand being used .
Usually id the sand isnt to wet we add around half a bucket of water and add more when needed
In the US when I try to find plasticizer they don't have the Bostik plasticizer. They have other products that appear to be the same. Kind of frustrating because I'd like to get what you use. Makes life simpler.
I get your problem try your US product probably the same 👍💯
I got told and have been using a small lid full of dishwashing detergent in an emergency for small backyard jobs. Is this allright?
@bernardmarsh4133
It's weakens the mortar so I wouldn't recommend it 👍
There's my mistake, to dry after a couple of minutes then adding more water, then it all broke up when I was haunshing monoblocks. Thanks for the lesson.

In very exposed areas could you use 1 :3 mix or would that be too strong
Bit strong that michael normally for underground work that ratio.
Above ground anything from 4-1 to 6-1 is usually standard. 👍
Could sharp sand be used instead?
Not on this type of bricklaying
Thanks for posting this video, gents. Very helpful...
Your very welcome 👍
Thank you lads nice video really enjoyed it 👍👍❤️
Pleasure and thankyou 👍
How much water was in the mixer at the beginning for that full mix please?
What's the smallest mix you can make in there? Is 1 bucket of sand not enough for some reason?
Hi Henry
Water all depends on how dry or wet your sand is so check that first.
@@E69apeTheMatrix420
Well thats a good price there i think .great mixers had a few in my time
Good luck 👍
Is that pure cement, no lime?
Sand cement mix no lime 👍
Can you use sbr in the mix ?
Billy yes you can in fact sbr has some very good advantages to use it such as addded strength to the mix waterproofing and reduced water per and reduced effloresence. Use it more in paving than bricklaying really though. 👍
we got 110 for safety then puts a 240v extension right next to it, all's good until you accidentally miss with the hose and soak the extension, which should also be completely unwound, not left coiled, good vid by the way boys😂👍

Great video , just wondered if there's a rule of thumb as to how many kgs of sand and cement to order per brick .
Michael
You are taking me back now to my college days .Yes to answer answer your there is a formula to work out sand cement mortar but im affraid i just cant bloody remember sorry mate 👍
Haha no problem 👍 I can always nip back to back to b and q
@Michael J .
Michael as a guide 1000 bricks is 1 ton of sand and about 12 bags of cement. It does depend on the bricks though ie frog in the brick is more mortar. Can't remember the exact maths on it ill have to dig out my nash books and take a look 🤣🤣👍🧱
Cheers for your reply , really enjoy all the videos keep them coming 👍
@Michael J .
🤣 your welcome and thanks appreciate it michael 👍
If you didnt use plastisizer, how much lime would you put in that 4:1 mix? What 3 part ratio would that be?
Id go.4 sand 1 cement 1 lime for bricklaying but there are .any ratios you could even go 6 or 5 sand depending on strength of mortar 👍
@@picajoool think they are around 75/mm2 for the bricks .
A lot more to bricklaying than people think isn't there 🤣👍

So different here in West Oz..if you let it mix that long the brickie wouud be out of mud ....and we just put dishwasher liquid in the mix ...lemon ,,smells better ..on a good run we lay a 1000 a day ..to cold over there, so different,,,,p.s and lots of cold beer ..🍻🍻🍻🍻
Clive sounds great mate that especially the cold beer .yea its to cold to wet here in wales its shit .Good luck to you mate 👍 😉
Excellent info. Many thanks for that.

Thanks guys. Great vid
Cheers guys
Will need to watch again and take notes.
I’m always worried about my concrete drying to quick.
How long does it take before it sets?
Takes a full day to set passed 50% then its cures for about a month to set fully .we normally use concrete within an hour of mixing it all
If you were measuring the water, how much would you add to the mixture shown? It looks like here you used the "TLAR Method" ["that looks about right"]. Alas, that works only with experience by one who knows what he's doing -- and not with a noobie like me.
The measure of water is a difficult one .
It all depends on how wet or dry your sand is.
Id say a a little at a time easy to add but cant take away.dont forget the mix has to mix the plastersizer helps this process. Hope that helps.
Justin 👍
Is lime ever used in the mix?
You can use it but the plasticizer does a good job these days
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Thanks for the quick reply and I´m looking forward to trying out the additive.
Since when do you use a straight portland for mortar?
Straight portland not sure what that means .we used ordinary portland cement 👍
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Same thing. Never use ordinary Portland cement as it is too hard. Portland cement is for sidewalks, etc. Mortar has lime in it and is for brickwork. A lime mortar for stone work. You never want to use a mortar that is harder than the brick or stone.
@@gary24752 agree totally but all they sell here is opc for standard works Gary and its what we are told to use in college etc .The bit u say you never want your mortar to be harder than the bricks is spot on agree.
May be where you are things are called different to here not sure but opc is used all over Britain for standard works .

What does the plasterciser do? What's it function?
It makes the mortor mix more workable or fluffy as we say in the trade 👍👊
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping So the mortar becomes more smoother, softer, creamier? Is there any structural purposes/benefits? Also is it a necessary ingredient? Is the mortar weaker without it?
@@Do_not_assume it does stop mortar cracking but if you add to much it will weaken the mix .If you want to lay bricks its a great benefit or if you dont want it in the mix use lime in the mix as that does very similar makes the mix more workable.
👍
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Thanks for the information. Please can you post a video explaining the difference between plastercisers/admixtures and SBR. And why are SBRs very expensive compared to plastercisers?

Why other mix mortar different color?
Not sure what you mean all same cement all same ratio
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping different color not same ratio?
Good mix ratio for shade variation but cut the soap down to 5mil for that size of mixture
It just does mix adequate enough with 5 ml ive tried it so many times .Your right less feb the better but 5ml just isn't enough in my opinion 👍
@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Check the bottle for quantity on the 25kg bag of cement , I always use 5mil straight into the mixer
and pour the water on top , always comes out like butter . Too much soap and you will be picking the powder mortar joints out a year later.
@chipper701
Totally aware of that we have tried so many times with 5ml and let the mixer mix its self to death and the mortar isnt what id call a nice mix to use layinv bricks .
