    Thank you for the great review of this radio! I wanted to clarify something about the power output. You do not need a GMRS license to transmit at high power (which is 2 Watts, but this radio transmits at 1.7 Watts according to the FCC documentation) on channels 1-7 and 15-22. As you said in the video, if you press the high power transmit button with channels 8-14 selected, it will only transmit at low power (which is 0.5 Watts). Basically, this radio is set up so that you can't break the rules accidentally. Family Radio Service (FRS) and General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) share some the same frequencies, but a GMRS license allows you to transmit at even higher power, set up repeaters, and requires you to use your assigned callsign. Again, thanks for the detailed review, and I hope this helps someone make sense of the power restrictions.

      you got it wrong G M R S is high power 2 watts Is high power under F C C rules
      and the second 15 through 22 is repeter channels you ant use onless you

      nearther Midland or cobera tell you just the word's 35 miles on the box

    Great review! I just got this as a christmas present and after reading the instructions some things were still unclear :)
    By the way the distances advertised are just as stated in the video but in miles, so it'd be slightly higher for km: 2 miles for urban (3.2km); 6 miles for open water (9.7km); up to 35 miles for maintaining to valley (56.3km)
    Now I got get an excuse to go outdoors and test them out, beautiful scenery, thanks again for the video.

    Excellent video quality. I wonder which camera are you using.
    I was considering replacing my T9500, which is an older version of this radio that doesn't have any of the bells and whistles of the new one, no flashlight or waterproofing. I'll benefit from water resistance, when using it on my motorcycle. The belt clip actually has a function and that is, keeping the antenna 1 inch or more away from the body because of radio exposure limits.
    Also the red flashlight is there in case you need to read or see something in the night while keeping night vision.

Tried the economy Motorola MG160A model in the past and threw them away after the first trip. Looking for a nicer unit now and this may be it. The battery takes 8 hours to charge. And then dies after 45 minutes. We are camping and need use while driving for 3 or 4 hours or more. It zeems the run down may be related to the two decices seem to be "open connected" . That is withoit pushing the side talk button. we can hear everything on the other end going on. Radio and background. Like the talk button is depressed permanently.. can you help us get more than a few minutes of functioning time?
    If battery life is a priority for you, ditch the rechargables and use regular (3) AAs
    Unclear on Low or high watt channels? Channel 8 is a "low" channel. And whats FRS family radio Service is? Will we get more life on a different channel?
    Mention IVOX . What are they and which to pick. How do we turn off if ots voice activated? Jist getting constand open line and Background noise?
    You mention Emergency leaves it wide open. How to tell If it iss on and how to Turn that off?

      I use this model for camping and canoeing and although battery time will vary on usage mine will give a good 9-10 hours of continuous use with the rechargeable (and included) lithium ion battery. You could go up to 23-24 hours if using alkaline batteries (which you can use) but these are much heavier and it would no longer float in the water. Using the power boost function will also use more power but as this is not the main factor for getting better range we don't use it much (keeping the antenna vertical on both ends and line of sight are mor important for getting range).

    Although extra perks seem useful, my Fox whistle is far louder, can go on a neck lanyard, and my flashlights of choice all beat integrated stuff that is going to drain a radio battery. I personally dislike multi-functionality, as generally inferior versus each separate normal item. At least in the U.S. a little known aspect is in any real emergency situation, you are exempt from penalty related to not having a valid GMRS license; if you can be diligent in staying on FRS bands, the extra range from the GMRS bands might be invaluable should a real crisis arise.

      CJT X after you selected a channel and set your privacy Code. press the PTT (press to talk) button to finish the setup. Don't let it get to 2nd channel setting screen . As of you able to select channel 1-11 that kinda weird. should be 1-22.

    I want to know some details about your talkabout.
    1) Will the supplied charger charge only the supplied motorola battery pack or it can also charge independent third party AA rechargeable batteries as well, when inserted in the radio?
    2) Are the supplied chargers 2 pin or 3 pin?
    3) Can you tell me the charger's input and output details, like volt, watt, etc.? I am from India (220-240V), and so will have to buy a step down voltage converter accordingly, if necessary?
    4) Please tell me the minimum (which channel) and maximum wattage (which channel) used by the radio, so that I can determine whether I need a licence or not, here in India.

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  7 років тому +2

      1) Motorola battery pack. 2) Micro USB 2.0 (5 pin). 3) Input : 100-240V 0.5A; Output: 5V 500mA 4) Channel frequencies listed are for Canada/USA/Paraguay/Panama/Mexico. I'm not sure for India. Best to contact Motorola directly. 14 channels are FRS (0.5 watt) and 15 channels GMRS (1.5 watt)

    Man that wiper will intro is cool even in the winter. Wow a whistle too! I NEED these radios. Really? A inferred light too? Wow these are so Dam cool. Love Motorola radios they seem to be the best and so worth the $$. Have you tested these long distance? OMG I was needing the vibration so bad so when Deer hunting it don't make a noise when someone calls. Cool light turns on when it falls in the water but does it turn on when just wet? I wouldn't want it to turn on when hunting just because it started raining & got wet. How far was you and him apart? I would Pay up to $200.00 for these. Great review of these for us. How much was these? Merry Christmas Girl.

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  7 років тому +1

      At the cabin it is hard to get the range advertised due to large rock outcrops, tall hills and deep valleys in the region. For example, when I was talking to you guys on camera, my hubby was about 1/2 km (1/3 mile) away and he was on the other side of a rocky outcrop . I was talking on a 0.5 watt channel. My other radios just heard static if we tried to talk to each other this far apart. I'm sure in a region where it was fairly flat and there were not many obstructions, it would operate better. There are two sensors at the bottom of the radio (by the light). If these get really wet, the light will turn on. In a light rain it shouldn't be an issue but pouring rain, you may want to keep it protected to stop the light from going on. Merry Christmas to you too Calvin.

    So are the higher channels like 11-12-13-14-15 ext better channels to talk on while trying to use in long range? What's Hamm too?

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  7 років тому +1

      The channels rated GMRS (listed in the product's manual and indicated by the Hi symbol near the channel on the LCD screen) transmit at a higher wattage so are better for distance. However, terrain is everything...line of sight with no major obstructions produces the best results. Ham radio is amateur radio.

    Someone on the REI web site said that the radios do not float with AA batteries, but will float only with the supplied rechargeable batteries. Have you tested these with AA batteries?

    • @cjtx3917
      @cjtx3917 5 років тому

      I think the manual says something more like it may not float with AAA's, but it doesn't say for sure. I have not tested it though.
