We filmed this test up on the Wirral Peninsula in North West UK and performed the test across the River Dee to Holywell in North Wales...a distance of almost precisely 10km.
The T80 Extreme devices were running on fully charged Ni-MH batteries and are unmodified in any way so were outputting 0.5 watts which is the maximum allowed unlicensed for this type of radio under UK law.
Thanks for watching and please let us know if you enjoyed the video.
the first reasonable range test on UA-cam !!! congratulations👍
ua-cam.com/video/AnrGex4yb6s/v-deo.html aprox 1600km from portugal to spain
Been used this model for almost 1 and half year. So far really satisfied with the quality. Its really work well.
Would you say they work for around 6km from a Village to the edge of a City? I thought about ordering 4 of these just cuz shits n giggles. Also, can 4 of them work on the same channel at once?
Use a tool like this ua-cam.com/video/iKsohN7Zr9A/v-deo.html to check if you have a clear line of sight. If you do, you should be OK. If there's anything in the way, you'll be unlikely to achieve 6km. Yes, they can all use the same channel but obviously, only one person can be transmitting at once in this type of simplex arrangement. Appreciate this comment is a month old so let us know how it goes or went.
@@Sharpless2 you get them all on the same channel and radio securty code then yes the cerit boards all maths just rember you have 2 miles
then you out of range
We've updated this video with the latest 27km range test here ua-cam.com/video/qnP7erTvaD0/v-deo.html - I realise that I'm cannibalising my own traffic here but it's worth watching.
4:30 for the actual test.

Can't find any on US amazon anymore... can anyone help?
I've updated the links above for more current models now. The T80 are still sold but are becoming harder to find. In the UK, at least, they are being replaced by the T82 and T90 (the one that floats)
I'm thinking about buying these and this test was very impressive (but I realise the range will be significantly reduced in a built-up or wooded area).
Very nicely produced video too. Thanks very much.
Thanks Thomas. Yes, the range is greatly reduced but in my general use and experience of these, I continue to be impressed at how well they do. If I had to estimate (though it's impossible to say) I would say...
BUILT UP / URBAN - 1km
OPEN TERRAIN / WALKING - 5km
LINE OF SIGHT - 10km+
We're planning to do a 17km test soon...just for fun :-)
Hello. I have a pair of these which I bought last year after, among other sources of information, watching the previous video mentioned at the start of this one, and if I were to buy now I would go with the more recent Motorola T82, as those follow the more recent 16 channel plan for PMR446 analog and also have USB charging.
But that is with the expectation that they are about the same quality and performance as the older T80's I've got.
Whatever you buy have fun with them.
Thanks, yes. I've been looking at the new T82. Not really round a review yet though (except on Amazon).
@@WarRadish the t 82 is a U K radio and would not be cleared by the

How satisfying. I was always want to see this kind of range test. Good job, guys!
Amazing. I’ve bought two Baofengs 3(!) watt walkietalkies and they stop receiving when farther than about one kilometer. Now I’ve got a hold on a Quad Pack of these T80’s hoping they would perform better. Thanks for showing that these Motorolas actually do their job better with only one sixth of the power! 😎
Great video, well produced. Thanks for the range test.
Great review. I just purchased the Motorola T600. Prior to that, I had the Motorola MS350R. Which by the way still work great. Motorola two way radios have never let me down. And.... you just reassured me of the range aspects. Ty for going to these lengths to test the range.
I do like Motorola radios (despite there being many capable *much* cheaper alternatives around from China). They all perform the same range wise but the overall design and build quality of the Motorola radios is great.
I so greatly appreciate this video, and it's a point I so often try making about these fabulous little radios. They're marvelous when used within their limits and properly. People often expect too much, like the 16 mile (or more) range in an urban environment. We done sir. And for the record, as a boy I lived on Church Street in the village Meysey Hampton in the early 1960's when my father was stationed at RAF Fairford while serving in the US Air Force. Loved my time there and the English Countryside. The scenes in your videos brings me back. Best wishes, and be safe.
Bit more of the UK countryside in the 27km version - ua-cam.com/video/qnP7erTvaD0/v-deo.html - This was shot in the Cotswolds and Wales.
I bought them last year, working perfectly. I can confirm they were working on distance roughly 5-7km in the forest I was realy positively surprised. Don't have any video unfortunately. But meaby I will do some video tests soon :) great product
Pouvez-vous m'expliquer comment ça marche sur 10 km ?
@@ismailtalal9816 NOT shure how the radio's in the U K work,
Thank you, very good video. Greetings from Czech :-)
Excellent bit of filming, I thoroughly enjoyed it, I always wondered how far 446 can travel... From 2E0 BGB..Well done !!!!!!¡
Thanks. I wish I had time to film like this on all my vids.
Thanks for the test - the truth was out there..
You've done what I always wanted to do but I couldn't find anyone who would like to be dropped off at the top of a large hill while I drove away in a warm car - with a promise that I'd collect them later in the day :)
Part of the reason I chose this location is because Will had already agreed to help me film this. It definitely needs that commitment from someone! Hope you enjoyed the video.
Good work testing them Motorola
Thank you!
Really helpful, and I bought one set for my self.
Well done on finding a set of these. They're not so easy to come by anymore as they've been superceded. Great radios.
Thank you guys. That is awesome
Thanks very Good video ❤️
I owned T80 Extreme Quad for several years now, I think its the best on the market among FREE LICENSE radio for range, usability and PRICE!!!! Its a winner winner.
Tqvm for the review. Cheers 😎
Great video & very impressive performance.
They do perform well. Our reactions were genuine. We really didn't know if this would work and were so glad that they did.
Extremely good considering an output of 0.5 watts!
Yes. We were genuinely surprised (as you can probably tell from the video). Here's a more recent test in a built up area...much less impressive but still better than I expected. ua-cam.com/video/t3LZ5CvlQGM/v-deo.html
Excellent review and I loved that you made a nice little adventure out of it too.
Im planning to buy thank you for good review very helpful👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Well done boys nice job :-)
Great job guys now I know what radio I am buying
You might want to watch this one too. Just so I don’t feel I’ve misled you with this ‘ideal’ scenario test 🙂 ua-cam.com/video/lNf-lOMQeMY/v-deo.html
Its amazing 11 km in outdoor test range, how about in door test range?
ua-cam.com/video/t3LZ5CvlQGM/v-deo.html This is the closest I've done to an indoor range test.
Bought these here in Oman recently and cannot even get 1 km range! And now they have some issue where it keeps showing low battery even on new ones or charged ones it came with.
nice video :-) this was a great range fir this T80 extreme Motorola .
I am absolutely surprised, I won't lie!
Hi, Namaste 🙏 can you tel me because battery is not charging anymore can I use AAA Single battery's.? Thankyou 🙏
I am from West Kirby 5 mins from Thurstaton. Great video.
Thanks Sam. We're both from the Wirral originally too.
Wow... excellent
Good job, thank you from Thailand.
This is a great video, guys. Informative and very well produced/edited. Um, do you think I can have my camcorder back now that you've finished with it? 😂
Haha...yes, of course. Nice audio on the Canon from the internal mics.
TDCatTech Yeah, it's not bad for fairly old and lower end tech. Glad it was useful.
Excellent video. New subscriber... 😎👍
Days when Motorola were best gone. Baofeng much cheaper and sturdy. Nice video. Thank you.
Hi, Yes I'd like to see you extend the range test. Being up nice and high both ends ;-)
Done. Google ‘27km range test’ and you should find us 🙂
Hi! I have the t-80 and I've never got it to work because I haven't been able to find a decent frequency and it sounds all fuzzy. Are there any tips to get a right number?
Great vid!!!
Can you test the 10 km range on the Motorola T92 H20?
Vic Green Daily how come? Are they practically the same radio?
Or t801 35 miles
Great Job...
nice job!
when charging it, does the red light turn green, switch off when complete, or just stay on red? Mine just stays on red for hours
Hi! I have bought the Motorola pack of two, t82, but I don't really know how they will behave. There are not many messages or indications how they work. They have to bring me them from another country and I will save some money. I live in Spain. I deem that on 12nd July I will have them according to Amazon. Do any of you have this pack? Best wishes.
How to set the Motorola T9500 range for farther communication
Is there a special setting we need to do for the range extension
No. Nothing you can do. The power levels are fixed on Motorola devices like this.
Good morning, would you do such a test for the models: Motorola T82 Extreme and TLKR T92 H2O ???
Please.
I use the Motorola xt180s and they are also good performers this was a great test of you're Motorola's and my answer is yes it would be great if you could do an extended range test of these pmr radios it would be very interesting to see how they perform think I will be getting a pair of these now......

Personally with that device I have a DX record of over 120 Km from Monte Musinè (Turin, Italy) to Punta di Mezzo (Varese, Italy) in optical range.
On the Alps (especially Monte Rosa group of mountains) it's quite usual for me to connect people in the Pianura Padana, more than 50 Km away. And the modulation of T80 is one of the best of PMR devices, in my experience.
A reported 330 miles was reported from an English hill to the Netherlands, recently using PMR 446; video on UA-cam.
Nice. I'd like to know if this was using stock equipment or something more elaborate.
@@tdcattech Stock I think. I'll find the URL & post it.
@@tdcattech Hi there. This video from Knoxieman explains it, but all he says is that 330 miles is "a record" and that it was attained handset to handset. No mention of WHICH handset, or freak weather conditions which can extend the range considerably. Ham radio users used to run a "million miles per watt" club to see how far they could get on one Watt. If I remember right a transatlantic convo was noted from Britain.
On CB I noted several "openings" where users in the N. of England and Scotland were actually stronger than locals here in Somerset. "Tropospheric Ducting" often the main cause of extreme long range.
Video:
ua-cam.com/video/4Azly1bgNj8/v-deo.html
Either way, you'd be made up if you achieved the 330 miles. We were chuffed to get such a solid result on 10km considering the antennas used on these devices.
@@tdcattech Hi mate. Here's a pretty long range shout using a Binatone Action 446.
Other QSO videos have shown copies at 83 & 89 miles!
Here's one video of over 20 miles.
ua-cam.com/video/g_ojgPYN1Kg/v-deo.html
Hello great vid but did you choose a specific channel for this distance?
Nothing specific. We used PMR CH01 and a Motorola 'sub-channel' of 47 which in normal radio terms is a digital-coded squelch (DCS) of 054.
In reality, we probably should have chosen something like CH06 or CH07 as these are generally less used than lower channel numbers.

Intresting to see a long range test on the t.82 extremes if you acquire them .....
I have business radio xt420 can you show us how to change to dcs code on business radio and also do a range test with them please?
I would love a review on the Motorola xtnid and xtni range test
I use the XT420 (the PMR446 equivalent to the XTNI) all the time on my channel. I’ve covered some good distance with that one! ua-cam.com/video/WhmHDYPqOdI/v-deo.html

Mere line of sight may not produce the same results everywhere. I suppose the large water body has got to do something with the radio waves skimming off of its surface.
I'm still waiting for the announced 50km range test! When?
I have done additional tests since but not a true handheld to handheld like this is. It was planned but then Covid happened! Hopefully we'll be able to get this done in the future.
Hi I bought one of the Motorola "XAP0085BDGAA"
XT180 and I would like to know what is difference between XT180 and T80 or would it be better if I pay the extra for the T80 Extreme? I'm buying these Radios to connect to some older model Motorola at work so I can have my own Radio and better signal, this is just to give you a idea of what I'm using them for.
Hello. I own this set and would like to see you extend the range of the test.
Excellent! Already plans afoot to do this but it’s surprisingly tricky to organise. Stay tuned :-) . We’re aiming for at least 17km next time.
TDCatTech I want to buy a T460. I need talk some like 14km. I will be above a hi place, and the other on a boat, in seeing line. I will buy just for it, and I'm excited with thats results!👏👏👏👏
These look like a nice option which I'd love to try for a few reasons.
1. The antenna looks a more appropriate length which may mean slightly better gain / performance...though the stated power of Motorola devices is the ERP so it may only lead to longer battery life.
2. Batteries are AA not AAA as the T80!! Much much better in every way!
They're still only 500mW from what I can see which makes the 35 miles quite a claim. Let us all know how you get on.
I bought a used Mr350, and he spoke 14 km. For now, this will be enough for me.
Thank you!
Thank you for an excellent report. You can do much more than this. A few years ago, Greater Manchester RAYNET members on Winter Hill linked up with Derbyshire RAYNET in the Peak District, using Icom PMR 446 sets, a distance of just over 30 miles, or about 48km. Signals were very clear both ways. I believe the Yanks have done about 75 miles, or 120km, in the Rockies no doubt. It's amazing how far this frequency will propagate, given a clear line of sight. It's much reduced in the urban environment of course.
If there's a tropospheric "lift" on, and you're in the boundary layer, you might hear Ireland or Scotland. Just below the peak of a slope is the best place to be. Vy 73 from G4FSN
Just published an urban range test of three devices (including the T80). Take a look if you're into this kind of thing. ua-cam.com/video/t3LZ5CvlQGM/v-deo.html
inconclusive test. Normal everyday test around Town is needed. Alot of Walkie Talkie's will go the full distance advertised as long as you have clear line of sight. Do a every day test in a built up area then we will really see how good they are.
This is a bit of fun. Of course it’s not realistic. In most of my videos I carry out a 300m urban test and they struggle at 200m!!
My need 4 pcs. How can i order it pls adderss me. And total price usd.
I've ordered mine....
Is it good?
Just got them today first impressions they look good but when you stand them up they rock from side to side I will take off the bottom yellow plates and file them a bit so they level up better that will alleviate the rocking....
It is an odd design choice but when using them, they are always on the clip on my belt, pocket etc. so I don't really notice this problem in reality.
I swapped out the NiMH packs and put in high capacity cells. It's a pain because you lose the ability to easily charge but the life of batteries is vastly better. Swings and roundabouts I guess. Enjoy!
TDCatTech update since removing the lanyard bar from bottom radio stands rigid now.
TDCatTech yes I opted for high capacity batteries as well ....
how many 2set is price?
hi the flim you maken is very pro so it is

I have the T82-Extreme radios And I found it didn’t go that far despite the fact it was meant to be 10K I was precisely 1 mile away Still was working fine but I found to be a little bit unclear on the walkie-talkie sometimes But I think it was due to the fact I was in charge that the property as I got it out the packet & started using it

How many talking range km?
I ordered mines, but says 10km, but doesnt go even 1mil far signal
Welcome to the world of RF :-) ... we were testing a line of sight scenario here with an elevated take off location to see if the quoted 10km was possible...which it is. Unfortunately, this unit is only 0.5W through a basic antenna. Walk 50m with a few solid buildings and you could struggle.
These usually work great in open outdoors and in medium business environments.
can they be upgraded to work better? tried with mine but couldnt reach a mile with a few buildings in the way
Not legally. It's much easier with brands like Retevis as they offer a 'High Power' option in their programming software (2W). This is, of course, illegal to use and will eat your battery but it might improve things a bit. In reality though, unless you can get a line of sight, you're stuck.
This Clear area, not any propogation.... Can you test with driving
Excelent...
You have to try it in the woods or in the wild in general.
I've used these in built up areas, forests, countryside etc. and range varies wildly as you might expect at 446MHz. Anything from 100m to over 10,000m. This video was just to test the quoted line of sight figures.
Motorola TLKR T92 Extreme is already much more convenient in features.
What features do you find better on the T92? Radio spec wise they're identical but I've never used one so wondered what new extras they've added.
wow. wow
Very good sensitivity and demodulation, super super cheap, very durable, good housing. However, such a great range and height is the result of height. In a straight line, close to the ground, even with direct visibility, it would not succeed. Because the earth absorbs electromagnetic waves and the wave also propagates vertically and the part absorbed by the earth is re-reproduced from the horizontal beam which quickly exhausts.
UHF is a very good band for the maximum range, for VHF or HF the results would be worse, eg the 27 Mhz band has many times higher grounding attenuation because the main (horizontal) wave is radiated too close to the ground in relation to its geometric size and is almost immediately absorbed in its entirety.
What about in the city?
Couple of hundred metres. No more.
@@tdcattech That is a huge difference. I'm surprised it drops to that low of a distance.
Can you get this in Canada...Very good field test..
Your driving is soo food.......
Nice work, next time go at night and use flashlights to understand were you are :)
*where
I think second men sitting no far then 50 meters in your car !)
Okay, next, get someone with a boat and see how far into the ocean you can reach :)
PMR with such power is capable to make 100Km easily but with direct sight line without any hills/summit...its not suprising that it works on that flat area above the sea level... Last time i was on hiking trip i made 80km from summit to summit ... but of course motorola is much more better solution then any baofengs.
Nice, guessed it would work.
I have done over 30 miles on 1/2w from amatuer radio handheld to a repeater so again high ground, Just the rubber duck stock antenna on my radio so 15cm or so and repeater wil lbe a high point and nice long 2 to 3m atenna, So will do more than 2 small comprimised antennas radio but the point. Talkabout T82 extreme
This is working because you are not in the city. This is not working in the city or maybe i have to create a channel ?
Of course. This is only working due to the fact we have complete line of sight. If you dropped a house in front of me, we would probably struggle. The best you can do on 0.5W PMR446 in the city in a few hundred metres.
Or make a video with Motorola T82 Extreme .
The performance would be very similar but I'd like to try them. Unfortunately, I don't own any yet. :-(
Man, this video could be 1 minute. Why do we have to watch your trip to get 10km far? And why do you consume petrol for 100km to go 10km far? Jesus. This is why climate is here where it is. Great to see that the 10km can be real btw
Could be 1 minute but I decided that it wasn’t going to be.
Im not disputing the test, but just a small note. Im not sure how many if you know that water is good transmitter/conductor of radio waves. The test should be done somewhere in mountain or even forest. Open front and having water between is not really accurate from my point of view. Anyway great job guys, appreciate effort !
As a plumber, it saves a whole lot of shouting such meaningful phrases as "turn it OFF, OFF, FFS" from the loft space, or words to that effect to my colleague at the outside stop-tap, or to check which radiators are heating up in large property, not used the earpieces that came with them in the box (voice operated?) . Pleased with them for the price, the max range I have tried them at is just 0.5km with plenty of tree and buildings in the way, and words were audible , (I'm from Norfolk, so struggle with english....)
This is a bit untrue I just tested my 4 new radio set and I walked 1.2 miles down the road and they failed, so all very well stating 6.3 miles accross an open filed but thats not going to happen very often!!
Absolutely right. This is largely theoretical. Take a look at this vid here. I did this because quite a few people end up disappointed with the range of PMR446 or FRS radios. ua-cam.com/video/lNf-lOMQeMY/v-deo.html

Do you mean 50km or 10km? Even with a great take off / view like this, I'd be surprised if they would achieve 50km.
Urban coverage is a different story. In my experience it's about 1km...maybe a little more. We may try that out in the future.
