Matt Thornton yeah dear old Andy the accountant with a heart of gold wrongly accused for murder of his wife and her lover cheating ass bitch caused him 20 years of his life plus he got raped and beaten up in prison. Glad he escaped and set up a good life for his self and old red.
"You are who you choose to be." "Superman"-The Iron Giant. One of the best scenes in an animated film ever. Take that you Superman haters. I miss the 90's. That movie still holds up today.
I never would have guessed that movies like Blade Runner, Vertigo, the Shawshank Redemption, A Wonderful Life, and ESPECIALLY The Wizard of Oz would flop at the box offices when they're considered classics in their genres.
They'll need to do a 100 lists for that subject, and most of the films on those lists would include all popular movie franchises that have started since 2000.
Well, the latest is 'Bohemian Rhapsody', universally panned by the critics, heading for it's second billion, still playing twice a day in cinemas 4 and half months after release, here in Australia. If something is really bad, it does not reach Australia. If really good, plays forever.
I always have a hard time with these "critics vs box office discussions". Not like I'm a fan of Transformers but... why is the opinion of a handful people worth more than that of a much larger sample size? I mean, taste IS subjective, and I'm not saying modern Blockbusters are great or these movies are bad but... it just seems more difficult than people make it out to be to me.
Well it's a hard one to call, the way I see it, most people who go see a movie don't post their opinions on Rotten tomatoes, they just go see it based on the trailers and marketing. Think of it this way, did you read any critics reviews before going to see the Avengers or the Dark knight rises?? you just paid to go see it, that's where box office numbers come from, critical acclaim on the other hand, comes from people who've seen a movie, analyzed it and posted their opinions online.
You can like something without it being good. Gaining a feel-good sensation through a film is done by various simple tricks that every filmmaker knows, but those tricks don't make the movie good. They're merely to make the viewer enjoy the experience. What makes a movie good is the performance of the actors, the quality of effects, the plot, the lighting, writing etc etc. If the mass likes a movie it's because the filmmaker has achieved to capture the feel-good sensation, but it doesn't make the movie good.
Taste is subjective, but you can't say a movie's bad if you never saw it, and that's what happened here. Although these movies were really good, no one went to see them. In a way, box office sales come more from "an image" than "a story". It's actually a "technique" that a lot of filmmakers and producers have been doing these days: They put a lot of money into promoting the film and making it "look good", that way the hype is a built up and a lot of people go see it. Even if the movie is crap, most of the time they'll make their money back from that first week.
I haven't paid attention to critic reviews for many years now. Films are subjective, either you like a movie or you don't, a critics opinion won't change that.
The easiest way I can explain the "critics vs box office discussion" is by invoking the notion of expertise. The average movie goer sees far less movies in a year then a critic, some of whom see almost everything. Further more, the average movie goer often only sees movies of a particular genre. What all this means is that the average movie goer does not have the skills to appreciate movies as an art form in the way a critics can. I.e. subtle performances, revolutionary technical details and many stories that are difficult to watch go over their head or just don't appeal to them. In most cases all the average viewer cares about is "fun". So basically the box office judges a movie by how entertaining it is and the critics judge it by how artistic it is. They are very different metrics and you follow the one that suits you the most. So. if you want to be entertained, go with the box office. If you want to see something artistic, go with the critics.
Oh Watchmojo. Why say, that Blade Runner is considered one of the best sci fi movies of all time and then not even include it in your top 10 sci fi's of all time list? Now, that is a massive bomb...
Munich is one hell of a movie, perfectly directed by Spielberg and very good actors. Scott Pilgrim also...........very good. Blade Runner..........a simple masterpiece. And The Shawshank Redemption is one of my all time greatest movies.
According to the short documentary that is on the special edition of Shawshank Redemption , it was critically panned not praised which dampened its ticket sales at the theater but you were right about it becoming a well known great movie after home video release and being played on television. The villain in The Iron Giant is ignorance and intolerance.
There are two GLARING omissions here: Citizen Kane (which was famously boycotted by the biggest newspaper tycoon, and therefore hated by the public) and Metropolis (which put a studio out of business)
oh, you mean that website with easily influenacable scores and hateful trolls? Yeah i dont really care. That list has movies that shouldnt even be considered "the best"
Some of these movies became great because they stood the test of time. A few Like Bladerunner and Donnie Darko became cult classics. It can be hard to judge a movie just based on the initial box office dollars VS the cost of production.
I noticed that some people are dumbfounded that movies that "deserve" to make a lot of money don't, while "unworthy" movies do. First of all, movies are subjective. What you think is gold, someone else thinks is trash, and what you think is trash, someone else thinks is gold. Secondly, the movies you like don't always bomb and the movies you hate don't always rake in money. Thirdly, sometimes there are good reasons why "bad" movies might do well in theaters: superior marketing, built-in audiences (think adaptations of popular books, TV shows, etc), special effects/audio that take full advantage of theater facilities (you can't get much, if anything, extra out of a movie like The Shawshank Redemption by watching it in a theater), etc.
While the idea that all of these great films flopped is very annoying, it makes sense. When I'm with my friends, we often pick the more action packed, easy watch films at the cinema and watch the movies that are of a higher caliber by ourselves, i suppose, so that we can appreciate them more...
MotherfuckerJones exactly. And don’t forget that we can rewatch at home if we wait DVD/ bluray release. I only watched action and super heroes movies in cinema to experience special and sound effects.
Hello , I believe it's because of marketing and budget also people today don't have the attention span that they used to due to tv , devices such as tablets ,smartphones, etc.
What about Treasure Planet? One of the best Disney Classics from 2000 until now (better than Atlantis, and most of the critic agreed about that), with a budget of 150 million dollars it grossed only 109 million worldwide >:(
I wish "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" was at least mentioned. It flopped at the box office because of the late decision to release it in theaters, so I'm sure it counts.
I would have put Citizen Kane somewhere on the list, because it is heralded as the greatest film of all time AND it was the biggest box office bomb of the 40's, while also being critically panned. One critic even wrote, "It will be a miracle if God allows him to continue to make more of these horrendous pieces."
The reason it was critically panned was due to William Randolph Hearst owning all of the newspapers and demanding that it not be given good reviews. The movie was loosely based on Hearst's life and the word Rosebud struck a little too close to home. Rumor was that Rosebud was the nickname he gave his mistress' privates. The fact that the movie is now critically acclaimed after that period of yellow journalism should qualify it for the list. It should have been #1.
Dredd Budget $50,000,000 - Gross $13,414,714 There's an online petition to have the studio make a sequel and I haven't seen a review of it yet that didn't praise it for being awesome. Not even an honorable mention?
Harold & Maude, actually, developed a cult following in my area. Groups used to follow it around since, at the time, there was no such thing as home video. Further, Cat Steven's musical score was considered spectacular.
Before i understood what the oscars and big award shows were about i always wondered why big successful films never win big awards but small films that rarely gross over 70 million dollars were winning the awards.
I think one of the reasons many of these movies didn't sell well in their time is because people complain about how movies or video games are the same over and over again. However when something new comes out we don't support it. Why? I think because deep down we really just like to go with old reliable. When something new comes out people have to be willing to take a chance, because they do not know what they are going to get. The movie makers have to somehow convince people to spend money to go to the movies and watch the movie, when they aren't sure whether they'll like the new thing or not. God bless everyone.
One of the Classic Movie of all time The General (1926) was also flop at the box office if The Shawnshank redemption releases now definitely it will cross 500 million in the Box Office

Dramas and movies with heavy dialogue only appeal to smart adults. Action and Sci-Fi films appeal to kids, and adults (both smart and dumb.) just like music. Hardly anyone listens to classical, yet pop and hip-hop sell into the millions.
Man are people whining here. It's the movies fault in the end. They didn't make a convincing trailer for the audience to get attracted from it. Then it becomes our fault for not telling everyone those movies were worth your money when it was out in theater. People thought "Edge of Tomorrow" would suck because of the trailer but when it was out small amount of people were trying to tell how good it is but it's too late. In the end it's both the movie trailer and our fault. So stop whining about stupid people when you're part of that group as well
Almost famous The nice guys Everybody wants some The BFG considering three of those movies are from 2016 it seems people dont know how to apreciate a good movie nowadays
I was thinking that treasure planet would atleast get an honorable mention. It's one of the best animated movies to me, but it is known as one of disneys largest box office bombs.
My biggest pet peeve and this been for a few years now, is that an amazing movie does nothing at the box office and yet a horrible piece of shit does gangbusters ...what the hell?? I actually smile when a bad movie bombs at the box office and likewise when a great movie succeeds.
Most people go to the movies to be entertained. People like to eat popcorn and feel good during a movie. Most people would say that movies are supposed to be fun! They don't want to be lectured to or be made to feel guilty or hear some deep political message. The problem with a lot of "critically acclaimed" movies is that they are not that entertaining. Why? Because critics don't go to the movies to be entertained. To a critic, a movie is good if it has some deep message that they agree with or there is something about the movie that is considered "cutting edge." I did find some of the above movies entertaining but most of them I wouldn't consider to be "popcorn" movies.
When you have another one of these, you can add Foxcatcher, which came out last year and received critical acclaim. It only made $15 million out of a $24 million budget.
For those saying Avatar should be on this list: Budget: $237.000.000 (estimated) Opening Weekend: £8.509.050 (UK) (18 December 2009) Gross: $760.505.847 (USA) (12 November 2010) Its that enough gross money for you?
You guys covered some of my favourite movies in this list! I guess I am blessed to have movie buff parents who showed me movies from all periods of time, not just the 90s on.
Nowadays, we can attribute critically acclaimed movies bombing at the box office to the economy, waiting for movies to come out on available media, and the devaluing of the Oscar and other trophies for movies. On the other hand, movies that came out fifty, sixty, seventy years or more didn't have that excuse. I guess the old saying rings true: there's no accounting for taste.
I've been scrolling for awhile, looking to see if someone mentioned Blade Runner and it's critical pummeling. There may have been faint praise for the production design and the effects, but the theatrical version was the version with the godawful narration. The 1990 screenings of the original workprint (without the added narration) also helped the rediscovery of Scott's film.
Science fiction nerds want Star Wars 2, 3,4, 5 ,6, 7, Harry Potter and super hero films. A film like Blade Runner is way over their pointed little heads.
Me and my friends went to see Scott Pilgrim 4 or 5 times in theaters. One of my favorite movies ever. I don't think it was a critical success, but a great movie that bombed was Dredd. Movie was so damn good. The advertising for it was so bad though. I regret to say I never watched in theaters because the scenes made it look terrible. It's a crime that we won't get a sequel.
If you ever update this list, maybe add teen titans go! To the movies Budget: 10 million Box office: 52.1 million, 6 million dollars Rotten tomatoes for the movie right now: 91%
Just realised how much Big Hero 6 ripped off Iron Giant. Feel pretty stupid not to have seen it earlier. Both movies are great though. But Iron Giant is in a league of its own
Spoiler alert: Both movies end with the big robot which has bonded with the young kid, sacrificing himself and saving everyone by going off into space/alt dimension. The difference is IG stuck by this ending while BH6 chose the Disney ending.
Scott Pilgrim is one of my favorite movies and I've never read the graphic novel. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Mary Winstead was so freaking beautiful on that movie.
It's pretty basic, people would rather pay to go see "big blockbuster movies" at the theaters to be entertained but movies like Shawshank Redemption need to be watched in your living room alone or with close friends
lol, I wasn't even old enough to understand english when that movie came out in theatres. Watched that movie a few days ago, and it has become one of my favourite movies. Unfortunately, I doubt many of my friends of have heard of it, and even if they have, I'm not sure whether they would appreciate it. Too obsessed with marvel. *sigh*
"Vertigo" absolutely captured me when I first saw it on it's re-release back in the late 80's. All of the films on the list are fantastic. It's a pity that they failed, but it's wonderful that a lot of them became icons. I'm surprised that John Carpenter's "The Thing" wasn't even an honorable mention, another victim of "E.T." during that summer. I saw "The Thing" a lot more times than "E.T." that summer, loving the audience's reaction during the infamous "blood test" scene. 1982 was such a magical summer for me!
The Shawshank Redemption had the misfortune of being sandwiched between Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction I like it better than both of those movies I guess timing is everything
The Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction...All in in 1994?!
Damn, that was a good year for movies!
Don't forget the Lion King.
1992disney Damn...you're right
EZ64 Or Leon
Don't forget Clerks.
& Natural Born Killers.
The Iron Giant is a masterpiece.

But people nowadays prefer Frozen and shits like that.
Yeah I would rather watch Iron Giant in a heartbeat. Frozen was pretty and I did like the effects but Iron Giant is way more cool. I still laugh when Holgarth (sorry if my spelling is wrong) gives the agent laxatives, and when Holgarth tries espresso.
Taiya001
And I still cry when the Giant says "Superman" and then close his eyes...
I'm proud to say I saw Iron Giant in the theater as a kid :)
Grave of the Fireflies is a masterpiece.

Frozen and Iron giant are two different categories, now I am not saying either movie is bad, but you can compare oranges to apples. Yes they are both animated films (i.e. "fruit") but on is about a boy and losing a friend that many viewed as a monster (i.e. an apple) , truly touching, but it is totally different from frozen, which was a bout a sister trying to safe he sister from becoming an out cast, while trying to save their kingdom (i.e. an orange) . I personally cannot stand the movie, nothing but garbage to me.
Right Matt, why don't you ask you girlfriend to come over and watch it
I thought Fight Club was going to be Number 1....why isn't it on the list?
Cause we don't talk about it.
Well, at the time of its release Fight Club received mixed reviews.
Nithish Koppula Didn't you hear what they said about Vertigo?
No it isn't about ratings it's about money making
Because it wasn't a bomb. It had a budget of $63 million, and it made $100.1 million. Things that make thier money back are not "bombs".......
I'm pretty sure It's a Wonderful Life is one of the most universally beloved movies of all time, but only in honorable mentions? Really??

Impossible
Very easy,
Because Forrest Gump came that year

You forgot Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.
If it makes you feel better I never forgot. (Hugs "Phantasm" DVD)
WatchMojo sadly leaves Mask of The Phantasm off a lot of their lists. I was hoping it would at least be an honorable mention.
Well actually, if memory serves, they did put it as number 1 on their Top 10 Animated Superhero Movies list. Check that one out.
I Did not know they made that list.
brillliant.
i have it on my amazon player watchlist.
STARDUST!! It came and went in the theatres. Such a shame. One of the funnest films I'd seen in such a long time. 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Kris Lambert Did you try turning your phone off and back on?
Kris Lambert clear the cache and then force close and restart the app.
How the fuck is Fight Club not on here?
drew shafer On their opening weekends, movies like Shawshank only got $700,000. Fight Club got 11 million.
So stop whining about stupid people when you're part of that group as well
What about "every Scorsese's movies till' 1995"?
Munich was a great great movie! Go see it, people!
Almost famous
The nice guys
Everybody wants some
The BFG
considering three of those movies are from 2016 it seems people dont know how to apreciate a good movie nowadays
I think the whole point of this video is that it was never 'nowadays'.
jose eduardo hurtado This was made in 2015, moron.
I was thinking that treasure planet would atleast get an honorable mention. It's one of the best animated movies to me, but it is known as one of disneys largest box office bombs.
No CITIZEN KANE?
Bob Schneider oversold
Dark City should have been on the list
Yes my friend...Dark City could easily stand toe to toe against Bladerunner.
Would you say that maybe Gattaca could also be considered?
Yeah, I agree with Gattaca
Dude, Scott Pilgrim is love, Scott Pilgrim is life
1982:
Year of the Under-appreciated.
The Secret of NIMH, John Carpenter's The Thing, The Dark Crystal, the list goes on.
For those saying Avatar should be on this list:
Budget: $237.000.000 (estimated)
Opening Weekend: £8.509.050 (UK) (18 December 2009)
Gross: $760.505.847 (USA) (12 November 2010)
Its that enough gross money for you?
You guys covered some of my favourite movies in this list! I guess I am blessed to have movie buff parents who showed me movies from all periods of time, not just the 90s on.
Shawshank #1 it's one of the best films of all time!!!!!
Shawshank Redemption is one of the best movies I've ever seen. And wow, 1994. What a year for movies.
Ironic that Ed Wood bombed, being about a director that bombs. I love it
Excuse me, but "Blade Runner" got mostly negative reviews from movie critics. Home rentals are what turned it into a classic.
+TheUnatuber One of the few times I agreed with the critics.
Was expecting hugo to be here.
If you ever update this list, maybe add teen titans go! To the movies
Budget: 10 million
Box office: 52.1 million, 6 million dollars
Rotten tomatoes for the movie right now: 91%
Vertigo is, hands down, one of the most amazing movies ever made.
Blade Runner is super slow, but all the more so rewarding for those who are patient enough to wade through it.
The thing (1982 of course) should definitely be on here same as the king of comedy and just about any kubrick movie
Just realised how much Big Hero 6 ripped off Iron Giant. Feel pretty stupid not to have seen it earlier. Both movies are great though. But Iron Giant is in a league of its own
How did it rip it off?
Big Hero 6 is based on comics made by Marvel. The Iron Giant is based on a novel the Iron Man. They're not the same thing.
Spoiler alert: Both movies end with the big robot which has bonded with the young kid, sacrificing himself and saving everyone by going off into space/alt dimension. The difference is IG stuck by this ending while BH6 chose the Disney ending.
There are similarities, yeah, but not enough to call it a rip-off.
MariaVosa The Iron Giant didn't die in the end of the movie nor the beta.
Fight Cub and Scarface (1983) were also two good picks for this List
Star Wars was released on MAY 25th not JUNE 25th, 1977. >.
The Thing
Children of Men
Sunshine
Narc
Once upon a time in the West
No mention of The Princess Bride? Inconceivable!
Scott Pilgrim is one of my favorite movies and I've never read the graphic novel. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Mary Winstead was so freaking beautiful on that movie.
Oz likely failed because of all the other movies, including Gone with the Wind
I'm shocked Edge of Tomorrow isn't on this list
Speed Racer was criminally underrated.
I am still upset over Scott Pilgrim´s flop.
And yes, Speed Racer is one of the best Family films i have ever seen. It needs more love.
Speed Racer, while entertaining, is really not one of the best movies of all time, dont you think?
(you definitely should)
super excellent
Scott Pilgrim vs The World is one of my favorite movies and I love The Iron Giant and The Shawshank Redemption too :)
BLADE RUNNER is so epic.....
Can't believe Shawshank Redemption was snubbed by audience.
It's a Masterpiece with zero hate.
*sigh*
Where's Almost Famous?!?!
That should have been there. Even worldwide it lost over 10 million dollars.
The Iron Giant is one of the best animated movies ever.
Some movies are just too esoteric & take time. I think that applies to all of these (except, perhaps, The Wizard of Oz).
Did you guys even do a Top Ten Best Actor Oscar winners yet? I see the Actress list but not the Actors...
scores on IMDb:
10. München - 7,6
9. Ed Wood - 7,9
8. Scott Pilgrim - 7,5
7. Vertigo - 8,4
6. Shawshank - 9,3
5. The Insider - 7,9
4. Donnie Darko - 8,1
3. Iron giant - 8,0
2. Blade runner - 8,2
Honorable mentions:
It's a wonderful life - 8,7
Harold and Maude - 8,1
Willy Wonka - 7,8
Peeping Tom - 7,8
1. The wizard of Oz - 8,1
If Dredd is not included, I'LL BE FLIPPING OUT!
I thought dredd was awesome too. So much better then that abomination with stallone
Fantasia should have gotten an honourable mention at least...
Fuck I love Blade Runner so much.
After watching Birdman, I believe it deserves a spot on this list. It's a... movie.
Do top 10 leaders of 20th century
"Vertigo" absolutely captured me when I first saw it on it's re-release back in the late 80's. All of the films on the list are fantastic. It's a pity that they failed, but it's wonderful that a lot of them became icons. I'm surprised that John Carpenter's "The Thing" wasn't even an honorable mention, another victim of "E.T." during that summer. I saw "The Thing" a lot more times than "E.T." that summer, loving the audience's reaction during the infamous "blood test" scene. 1982 was such a magical summer for me!
What about singin' in the rain and citizen kane?
Singin' In The Rain didn't flop?
The Shawshank Redemption had the misfortune of being sandwiched between Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction I like it better than both of those movies I guess timing is everything
Can't do Top 10 Bad Movies that did Well at the Box Office.
That describes 90% of what comes out of Hollywood.
=S
Just watched Shawshank for the first time a few weeks ago. Easily one of the greatest movies I've ever seen.
what about fight club ?!
Very bad movie, doesn't count
0532MOET Yeah, alright, Mr. Roger Ebert!
0532MOET Fight Club was awesome, what are you talking about ?
Fight Club did fine actually. It made 100 million dollars. Which still isn't good for a movie which is considered one of the best movie of all time.
Fight club is a great movie
7:18 haha that line made me laugh so much when it was put in the background of the woman's voice lel
