One trick that we used back in "the day" st breakfast time was to make our instant oatmeal first, then when we were done put more water on in the cup and make our hot chocolate - maybe with a slight oatmeal taste - when done put more water in the cup and make our coffee. When all was done the cup needed only a quick rinse and it was clean and ready to pack up and go...

Greetings Sir from Australia (again). Watching this threw my thinking back to 1976 & ‘77 when I first started eating Ration Packs ‘out bush’ in the Australian Army. We cooked everything over a little heximide solid fuel open stove. We all learnt quickly to crack open Ration packs back at base, and ditch what we didn’t like, or trade for things we did like. Many of us added a very small bottle of Tobasco sauce, or small containers of curry to add into our tinned meat. (This was well before zip lock bags). I don’t ever remember having a bad meal, just that some were more desirable than others. I was a tea drinker, or at last meal a hot chocolate drinker. All cooked in our aluminium canteen cup, over the hexi stove. I am pleased to see that heximide and the stoves are still sold here in Australia although in Great Britain heximide is no longer commercially available. I’m looking forward to making a brew in silence in the bush again.
The best thing I ever found for cleaning out steel canteens and cups is to put in 4 or 5 false teeth cleaning tablets, and fill the thing you are cleaning with very hot water. After a few minutes, empty it and rinse it well with soap and hot water. It even takes out old tea stains.
hi blackie, recently found out the brits add flavored hot chocolate mixes to their mres. have been playing around with the orange one. orange extract leaves a alcohol after taste. so far the best recipe seems to be 1 pack swiss miss dark or 1 pack land-o-lakes supreme to 1.5 tablespoons thawed frozen oj. the other day bought the xmre maple brown sugar oatmeal. the drink mix in this mre was the 'cool-off' orange sugar free. this drink mis when added to hot chocolate a 2 -1 ratio gives a hint of orange flavor. so a 1 pack hot chocolate to 1 pack orange drink mix seems about correct as both are designed for 6-8 oz water. when i had the overnight duty onboard lcu2001 during desert shield / storm a mid rat. for me was 1 cup beef broth to 1 piece mre bread. get a little salt an some bread / cracker. on the soup front, take campbel's or other brand bean & bacon soup mix according to directions. now add about 4 cooked bacon slices, diced / crumbs. in the salad section of your grocery you can find the salad bacon crumbs. usually the small .5 oz bag is enough for 1 can. season to taste. pepper. oh, back too the hot chocolate have tried trader joe's 'sticks' in this & plain. trader joe's is a bitter chocolate stick. have found i need to add 2 tsp sugar to the trader joe's sticks. at 31:45, so you want to do the brit 3-1 coffee mix home style customed. the other day i found 'sure fresh' containers. 10 to the pack, reuseable. 2.3 oz / 68 ml / .29 cup. this container sound like what you want for this project.
@@BLACKIETHOMAS the orange hot chocolate has a recipe #5. this is the mre / camping recipe. crystal light has their orange / tangerine flavor, made for a 16 oz water bottle. so 1 packet orange drink mix to 2 packets hot chocolate mix for a 14-16 oz cup of orange hot chocolate. the test cup got guzzled down.
❤ For those of y'all that prefer ground coffee to instant, but don't want to be spitting or throwing out coffee grounds, I found a little spoon contraption with a built-in reusable coffee filter. This may sound like an ad, but I just love this little thing! I picked mine up at a dollar store, but there are different variations that are sold all over the internet. It's as simple as loading up one of them tea balls, but holes are smaller to prevent getting coffee particles in your cup. Now, you'll still get a little silt at the bottom of your cup, but I prefer that over an ìnch of used up coffee grit. Mine is shaped like a measuring spoon, so I just fill it 3/4 full, swivel the cap around to lock it into place, and swirl it around in my cup like a regular spoon. It's plastic, so it weighs nothing. It's infinitely reusable, so I just need a ziploc baggie of ground coffee to go along with it. It's easy to clean, just swing open the door, dump out the spent coffee, and rinse off the residue.
I don’t know why sitting under a tarp cooking over a little camp stove or on a small campfire is so fun and satisfying but it just is. I always enjoy cooking in the woods. Your video reminded me of when I would not drink instant coffee. When I started out staying overnight out hunting I would take ground coffee. I could not stand instant. Then about 50 years ago my elder brother in law told me how to make instant coffee that's actually fairly good. The key, he said, was to boil the water and then add the coffee. It does give it a better taste. I still prefer my ground coffee though.
Thanks for the detail and the idea about using the book in marking your canteen cup, but those would’ve probably come. You did a really good job on this. I’m looking forward to your cooking mama fire videos.
The Lipton dehydrated soups are good in the canteen cup/stove scenario. They're easy to carry and easy to heat. You can put other veggies in them to cook too.
This'll be a great series, Blackie. Thanks. I'd like to suggest the Rite-in-the-Rain notebooks (they have lots of sizes and configurations) that use a waterproof "paper" for outdoor work. I've goofed up and left one in my jeans pocket (twice) while washing them -- the old writing became a tad blurry, but the paper still works great. Paired up with a Fisher Space pen is even better. If your re-enactment supervisor catches you, just tell him you just returned from a time traveling trip and offer to give him a small pad ...
Beautiful! I love your gear, and the notebook and the small container that snaps shut to hold the beverage packets are great ideas. I’m gonna love this series!!
Didn't realize coffee and some of the other drinks would do that. The Propel powder will etch a fill line in 20oz plastic tumblers at home, should have guessed on the same for metal. Great stuff Blackie.
its kind of like you notice when you take spaghetti for lunch to work and the plastic lunch tub takes on a reddish look and even when you wash it it still has some red haze to it.. the tomato acid bonds to some plastics well coffee and some teas will bond to metal if you use them enough and you have to in effect sand the inside to wear that bonded layer off
This is going to be an awesome series/playlist 👍. I picked up some silicone measuring cups for my alcohol stove fuel, they are 100 ml or about 3 oz & have been handy for many liquid items. I am thinking of using a cut off bottom of a plastic bottle and filtering through some material. I am hoping to get most larger particles etc out of the water to increase the life of my filter is that worth doing? I occasionally like the real coffee but instant works for me on the trail most off the time, I like a pint or two of tea slightly sweet no milk in the evening too.
@@ScottCarlson-cz7wj that is awesome!! Up here most people are getting ready to go camping for the long weekend and the other half is getting ready for hunting season
Blackie, are there single serve coffee bags over your way? I usually carry a couple of those coffee bags as a change from my Nescafe coffee that I drink every day. Informative as usual and just as entertaining.
First thing I thought of when I saw that cup of hot water was Ramen noodles soup with the little packet of powdered flavor. But it is a beverage video.
Blackie.... I got one of those cold-weather canteens from Kaufmann's that you showed a while back. Do you know of a cap that will fit and replace the white cap that they come with??
Apoligize in advance if you cover this in the video, but I'm interested in the "Camp taters" recipe you talked about in a recent video. You mentioned in that video the larger surface of the Crusader cup works better to brown the meat. Is it even possible to brown the meat in the bottom of a USGI canteen cup?
Video just started so idk if you readdress this or not, but talking about the grill racks with the canteen cups in the vid the other day.... the small one pathfinder makes the 4.5x 4.5 i think it is does not fit in the canteen cup, i tried☹️. It was designed for the 64oz bushpot so theres that🤷♂️

Woke up this morning and found a new Blackie video. Informative as usual and just as entertaining.
yes they sell those and you can order on line single pouches of many kinds of coffee
@@BLACKIETHOMAS, I never order online as I prefer to support a local store especially when it comes to clothes and footwear.
Where do I get a canteen pouch with a sling like yours ?
kaufmans military surplus samson al. call 334 -898-1770 tell then blackie sent ya they will set you up
First thing I thought of when I saw that cup of hot water was Ramen noodles soup with the little packet of powdered flavor. But it is a beverage video.
nope but we will cover those later on with a few twists to make them better
Blackie.... I got one of those cold-weather canteens from Kaufmann's that you showed a while back. Do you know of a cap that will fit and replace the white cap that they come with??
let me check
ok i tried it and the lid from the pathfinder is bigger than the artic canteen
@@BLACKIETHOMAS Thanks for checking!! I appreciate that!!
What kind of pack is that your carrying ?
it is my REDHAWK HAVERSACK one of my designs
You didn"t talk about the ridge line you put up. Video was interesting i will use this info
go look at Dave canterbury's channel he just did a good video on it i was trying his innovation out
Apoligize in advance if you cover this in the video, but I'm interested in the "Camp taters" recipe you talked about in a recent video. You mentioned in that video the larger surface of the Crusader cup works better to brown the meat. Is it even possible to brown the meat in the bottom of a USGI canteen cup?
yes it is and that should be the 3rd video in this series so stay tuned
Old vids are so good plz dont take down !!! Just make a new playlist
ok i will leave them up
Video just started so idk if you readdress this or not, but talking about the grill racks with the canteen cups in the vid the other day.... the small one pathfinder makes the 4.5x 4.5 i think it is does not fit in the canteen cup, i tried☹️. It was designed for the 64oz bushpot so theres that🤷♂️
Thats the pathfinder cup for reference
correct i have one as well and your right if i bend it a bit it will fit but not well
My 4.5 x 4.5 works great in the M-40 bushpot. I use it for baking. I've never tried it in the canteen cup. Interesting thought.
@@ScottCarlson-cz7wj its a smidge too wide. Like blackie said, only way is to bend one or the other. I got my buddy one of those m40s for his birthday... still debating on if i really want one
yup, we drank Instant red borsch in cups after a storm watch on a yacht
i have drank many odd left over stocks from cooking veggies on cold winter days
I must be a psychopath. I have never been bored with just water.
You didn't waste any time implementing that ridgeline lol, which is your favorite of them all?
mine with the plastic toggles and bankline this was a fun testing of his idea and it works well i may use it for my long line and keep my ridgelines like before
@BLACKIETHOMAS that's great I was just curious lol, I hadn't tried the s-biner way yet but I knew it would work or Dave wouldn't have showed it 🤣.
I've used denture cleaning tablets to clean my water bottles.
those work very well
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
thanks for watching
I think painting the stuff black. Will cause it to boil faster.
i find it seems to heat more evenly less hot spots
@@BLACKIETHOMAS good to know!
I carry two canteens one with gatorade
nice
@@BLACKIETHOMAS Thank you blackie
With the L-Handle canteen cup it will not tip over it must be kicked over
they are very stable
Would you consider yourself a hippie in your younger days?
hmm not really i was more of a woods bum
@@BLACKIETHOMAS 😂😂😂
