    haha, in singapore, the chinese "carrot cake" is actually radish "cakes" as the direct translation of radish in Chinese is "white carrot". So they just name it carrot cake. The radish cakes are made of shreaded radish and rice flour and then steamed. But we do have the actual dessert carrot cake but typically not sold in hawker centres

      Actually there is zero carrots or radish in it , it is 100% made by rice powder, so should be rice cake by right,in the early days they just called fly cake (抄粿),until the 70’s someone try to be smart and change the name into carrots cake.

    Welcome to Singapore! Kudos for visiting the off beaten paths. Everyone thinks Singapore is very expensive when compared to other SEA countries but if compared to other first world countries, Singapore isn't that expensive except for lodging.

    • @cworldwanderer
      @cworldwanderer  10 місяців тому +9

      Exactly, even the hotels really, if you compare to London for example it's very affordable. Plenty of activities you can do for free and unless you're going to high end restaurants the price of food is very reasonable also.
      I think a lot of people who go to South East Asia are doing so on a budget so Singapore does seem expensive in comparison to neighbouring countries. However no other country in SE Asia (that I've been to anyway) has the same level of infrastructure as Singapore so that's a key difference.
      However I'm sure living in Singapore long term is expensive, especially if you want to buy a car 🤯

      WRONG..Why Singapore been ranked the most expensive for the last 9yrs mainly due to property & cars(SG remains the most expensive place on earth to own cars since 1980s,high pricing been this way for so many decades).
      Property pricing is insanely expensive when comes to rental & sale. Try living in Singapore(NOT as a tourist for only few days of stay) & u will experience yourself.😅😂
      Why other things seem alot cheaper than Europeanz is because of cheaper food & public transport systems. Europeans & America dont have long culture of street food. Singapore is located in asia so asia in general luv to have street food just like many asia countries. Of course singapore street food is more organized & cleaner since is a developed country. So in this manner, singapore is lucky to be located in asia with influence of street food culture.
      Therefore if u come in as a tourist, u WONT be able to know singapore is insanely expensive since ur only concern when u visiting is just food & public transport only haha; These 2 things are dirt cheap to our standard & very affordable to many countries too!! 😂

      @@cworldwandererU came in as a TOURIST, NOT as a long term resident, of course u would assume S'pore is still cheaper since tourists only care to look for food & public transport🤣🤣
      U might get heart attack when u know how expensive Sg rental & sale of property are like. We even have the world's most expensive PUBLIC HOUSING, vy common to find some HDB/public housings are sold over 1 million SGD for just 3 bedder(means only 2 bedder,1 living rm & 1 toilet, 700 sqft). Pls do remember they are PUBLIC housing NOT private condos, private apartments or landed houses in SG are at crazy unthinkable pricing that only the richer ones can afford to buy. For eg the CEO of tiktok chew bought a vy OLD rundown mansion at prime location for SGD86 mil(USD65 milion). ❤

    LOL that auntie not quite know how to answer your question in English. It is literally translated from chinese word for the radish...white carrot. There are two versions of this dish. White or black. White is more savoury and eggy, black is cooked additionally with sweet dark soy. So it will have a sweeter taste and perhaps a more smokey or intense taste profile than the plain white version. The dish is usually fried with preserved radish, minced garlic, fish sauce...

Because our early forefathers low literacy and poor grasp of English, they mistakenly translated radish for carrot. This is because the Chinese character for radish and carrot is the same. It is differentiated in Chinese with the colour. Direct translation of radish would be white carrot, while carrot is red carrot.

      @@cworldwanderer I agree. I love London but now the city is not as safe as it is used to be, like warzoneas you said and also, I did stay in Central London once with my sibling and can't remember where it was but it's the Victoria walk up type and room was small and basic like 50 to 60 pounds a night but again, it is in central London and it was one of the pocket friendly hotels. We stayed for a night before heading off to Glasgow. Probably will be back to London maybe in late October or November for the west end musical.

      Had biryani in this video is that Chinese as well? 😂 The previous video I had Kaya toast and Prata 🤷 Didn't eat much Malay food as I went to Malaysia after Singapore

      Most of the youtube’s video by creators mostly concentrated around areas of chinatown, marina bay…the usual spots. Chinatown is too “articulated” if I were to say diplomatically. Great that you explored Geylang area and Tekka. These places are more “organic” and still have its soul.
      And true, better off to have good Malay food in Malaysia. I’m Singaporean and I still firmly feel Malaysia’s food fare is better than here. It’s just sad they don’t know how to market it well.
