Chris, great to see you mingle with the locals at the Pasar in Pasar Minggu (Pasar Minggu is actually the name of the "Kelurahan" or ward/area that you went to and it coincidentally has the name Pasar in front of it...confusing right?....there is a story dating back to colonial times behind the names Pasar Minggu, Pasar Senen, Pasar rebo...... these are all areas in jakarta...you can google it).....btw the apartement you're staying at is in Kelurahan Kalibata..... Anyway, the traditional market situation is a bit complicated in Pasar Minggu, several years ago the local government actually started revitalizing the market by constructing a new market area a few hundred meters away from the main road but is deemed too far away from the customers and hence they end up still selling in areas near the main road albeit in makeshift places....so it's a mess.... I think going to the wet market is worth it for you as a foreigner for the experience and see how the typical locals behave and how they get their hard earned money....my wife says the local markets are usually cheaper for vegetables, certain fruits, spices but packaged products/groceries are usually cheaper at the supermarket..... Life is currently a bit hard in Jakarta (it's a global thing really)....but it's good to see these folks "appear" to be happy no matter how hard their life is.....in Central Java there is a saying "mangan ora mangan sing penting ngumpul".....meaning....whether or not there is food to eat, the important thing is we are together....
