Welcome to our Skepta ft JME That’s Not Me American Reaction!!! This is our latest video reaction from our new music reaction channel Beer’s & Bars. Here we listen, react, and breakdown bars while enjoying some of our favorite beers. Today's we just witnessed an amazing UK Grime sound with a nice late 80s old school video which was a perfect combination!! Skepta laces the hell out of this Grime sound with endless punchlines and JME brings a great flow with an effortless cadence!! We swear the UK Hip Hop scene is a force to be reckoned with and Skepta ft. JME That’s Not Me is another great form of evidence to prove our point! Looking forward to more from Skepta & JME!
Skepta and JME are brothers and legends of the UK scene

Not sure if anyone’s put this in the comments yet, but this tune is so big because it was basically a comeback to proper grime by skepta. In the late 00s/early 2010s skepta was releasing more radio friendly songs. This song was a return to his early 2000s sound, hence the video too
This version of skepta in my opinion outdoes every other grime MC. At his peak skepta is/was the best.
@@BigKrisMorrismusic is subjective. Skepta was the king of grime, so was Devlin, so was Kano, so was bashy, so was Wiley, so was duurty goodz and now it's sox cause he's the only one keeping the torch burning. The midlands the only place grime ain't dead these days imo
@@bhvillaman4401although his path changed I'd put Dizzee in there as well, if nothing else but for how boy in da corner elevated grime's attention and influence.
Grime is Grime, Drill is Drill. There's a few similarites/bridges but they're seperate entities. If you wan't more Grime do the 60 minutes Live with a plethora of artists!
They ain't gonna fuck with that yet they need to ease into it man. Live sets are too much for the American ear straight away
@@123brizy disagree. the dizzee 60 minutes live is very mainstream sounding
@@123brizy come off it with that lmao Grime is just better than Drill. Drill is a chore to listen to most of the time
@@jpcoqueran I didn't say anything about drill? You need to understand to the foreign ear grime radio sets sound like chaos with random beats being played and a few bars here and there being spit with people coming and going it just confuses them 😂. They need to be introduced to some music videos or something first
Great explanation
Grime comes from UK Garage and House from the 90s, a lot of “dance” style beats a lot of MCs used to get on.
Our drill is inspired from Chicago, but we made it into our own thing over the mid 2010s to late 2010s, and now what NY drill is/is heavily inspired by now.
There’s a difference, both are very important to the UK rap scene. Smooth rap is now really picking up now here with the likes of Knucks and Loyle Carner becoming huge.
and real is back in style with potter payper
Wrong, Chicago copied Drill from the UK.
@@fredthered3283 no they didn't bro, there was a lot of influence from Chicago drill at the birth of the UK drill scene
@@fredthered3283 Chicago is well known for being the birthplace of drill mate. NY Drill is probably what youre thinking of, seeing as they're heavily influenced by our beats and rap styles.
Plus I don't think you can copy anything in music, taking influence is what it's called
@@jacka3621 you can’t compare UK Drill to Chicago Drill, they’re completely different
This track was made when Skepta was pretty much a household name in the UK, he was huge and went back to roots. He made the beat with original grime sounds that you'd hear in beats around 2003. The video cost him about £50 to do altogether 😂😂😂
Sure the beat was made with a program on a PlayStation 1
Grime used to have a lot of clashes/battles. A lot of the top rappers you see today would clash like Ghetts, Skepta, Wiley etc true grime artists
Grime came from a background of UK Garage/House music at 140bpm + Jamaican sound system culture. Very unique beats and flows you won’t hear anywhere else but the UK.
About the music video, from Wikipedia: A music video directed made by Tim & Barry to accompany the release of "That's Not Me" was first released on UA-cam on 13 April 2014, at a total length of 3:04. It was preceded by a short documentary shot on VHS in a style intended to invoke early grime DVDs such as Lord of the Mics and Practice Hours. This video, which had a budget of £80, won the Award for Best Video at the 2014 MOBO Awards.
Grime is grime. UK Drill is our version of drill. Grime is a culture and genre that came about in the early 2000s, basically UK Garage and Jungle/Drum and Bass MCs mixed dancehall/Jamaican soundsystem culture with US hip-hop (e.g.the bars), if you think it's just UK rap you'll get unstuck if you ever watch a set or clash. This is the nutshell within a nutshell version obviously. Have fun discovering it!
JME has a banger called "integrity" which you should definitely listen to. skepta has a similar song but without a feature called "shutdown". looking forward to some more grime reactions! great vid
Not forgetting JME Man Don't Care - classic
Yes integrity please!!!!
+1 for integrity. Haven't seen any US guys react to it despite it being top tier
@@Dippa666 exactly
Awesome!! Thank you!
This is such a tuuuune 🔥🔥🔥🔥
UK Drill and Grime are separate genres. Grime evolved earlier, between about 2000-2003 and has been about ever since.
This is Grime - in fact this is a classic, iconic Grime track. Skepta and JME are brothers in real life and both huge, respected Grime legends in their own right.
JME sticks largely to Grime (Skepta has made more music on a wider variety of genres) and tbh if you want to understand what Grime is as a genre, you can’t go wrong with JME. Also, lots of Skepta, obviously Wiley and Dizzee Rascal for the early crystallisation of the Grime sound and style. Would recommend you follow this up with Wot U Call It by Wiley, and I Luv U by Dizzee Rascal to hear two early iconic grime records and you will understand the genre a lot more.
I think you just thought JME sounds like Akala because of the accent - most well-known Grime MCs are from London, growing up not far from one another, so many have a similar accent, but if you live over here I don’t think you’d think their voices are similar… JME has one of the most recognisable voices in Grime!
The ‘Mario’ type 8/16-bit sound is actually a classic characteristic of Grime. As a genre, Grime has a lot of parallels with punk, in terms of being a genre that gave kids with no musical background or experience the chance to just DIY, and sonically there is something of a similarity in the raw aggression of youth and frustration with society/the system. These kids are the generation that grew up when computers became more common place in the home, and music software would be ripped and shared about… kids installed cracked copies of Fruity Loops and other basic music production apps onto their machines. They were basic and a lot of the sounds were 8/16 bit type sounds hence why the beats they made feel like they share similarities with game console sounds/music. These kids were not musicians, they just taught themselves to make beats by using these cheap software packages. The default setting on the software was 140bpm too, which is another Grime characteristic- it became commonplace because of the software default! Hence why Grime has a very distinctive sound to other rap genres. On top of this, the vocals are usually fast and aggressive, and oftentimes comical. This is because those kids who made those beats for themselves and their friends to rap over, used to take their music to Grime clashes (on London rooftops on pirate radio) and essentially spit their bars in crowded rooms full of MCs vying to be the best…
It’s a great Genre to do a deep dive into. My favourite of any rap sub genre tbh. So many of the great MCs you have already covered - Kano, Ghetts, Wretch, Skepta, Stormzy, Akala, even Little Simz, started out on Grime before moving into other areas. Kano and Ghetts still make a lot of Grime records.
Thank you!!! Definitely more to come!!
Kat out here educating ❤
I’d like to add that the whole milk crate thing is because these guys all did pirate radio too, up in peoples bedrooms not fully funded studios so it was make shift set ups, so it’s showing more of who they are rather than a flash set up with a high quality video production because “that’s not me” that’s not where I came from. Although as soon as the money starts flooding in and technology improved obviously their videos and set ups got better lol
Great analysis, other than calling it a sub-genre of rap. IMHO it’s definitely its own genre.
I wouldn’t call it a sub genre of rap it came from garage music and jungle more than rap even though it’s mcs spitting over beats ! That’s just our uk history !
fire reaction!! This is a classic in the UK, if it seems older, it's because it's a throwback to the early years of grime, early 00's.. The riddim is a reworking of an older grime track by Wiley called 'Pies'.
For more Skepta check out 'Shutdown' 'Plugged in w/ Fumes' and 'I Spy'.. all absolute bangers
Added to the list!!
@@BeersBars If you really want to understand Grime, know Wiley is the Godfather, Grime have Dance Hall and Garage as roots. This Wiley song is from just before Grime got it`s name. Call it Garage, call it Urban?! Grime.

Dizzee Rascal Had the first commercial Grime hit.

The problem with stuff like Fire In The Both, is it`s from BBC there used to not give Grime Air time when it was new, now after a few hits they toke over, with first BBC1Extra DJ Semtex, and later FITB. Time line 2003 to 2013.
Big up to you guys for these reactions 👊🏾💯 Grime came before UK drill and has a very distinct sound and BPM different to UK drill. Grime started in 2000, Skepta, JME Kano, Wretch and and Ghetts all started off as Grime artists and were there since the early days.
How you not even gunna mention wiley bro 😂 he literally made grime
@@Clippedfr405 they ain’t reacted to Wiley yet bro, just telling them about the people they reacted to that were Grime.
JME feat Giggs - Man Don’t Care
The Stormzy/Chip beef is a rabbit hole worth venturing down.
I always liked the chip-devilman beef mainly for devilman's rude replies.
Skepta vs devilman was the og clash !!!!
I haven’t watched the video yet, I’m about to but if you didn’t know these two are brothers.
Skepta is a real legend in the UK. Was around at the start of grime, has some big features like Asap Rocky and was on Drakes more life album.
He was in arguably our biggest ever group called boy better know.
First ever grime star to go commercial and grew the uk scene
lool dizzee was the first to go commercial
Dizzee went international years before anyone else then I'd say skepta and Stormzy a little. And central cee is probably the biggest artist out of the uk currently but he's drill not grime
this is proper grime, higher bbm from the garage music influence
Loved this guys! "Man don't care" "96 Fu**eries" and "integrity" are a must watch/listen of JME's. Keep up the good work!
The beggining of the video with the wall n writing on it in the stairway is where the original video freestyles were done in the early days by a LOT of the best original grime MCs. Thats why this video is shot like this its supposed to be a throwback to them days with some of the old clips in the bacground
Just so nostalgic for me grew up with these guys channel u days good old days ❤
It's hard to define this for outsiders, but this isn't drill at all. It's pure Grime. The lines have become blurred between Grime & drill. For true Grime fans like myself, those lines are obvious but for people coming in new it's hard to see the difference.
All I can say is Grime is a whole different thing. Drill has a much more American influence while Grime has much more of a Jamaican influence.

These two brothers are Grime Legends! And since you're listening to UK artists check out the clash general Chip, who's another UK Legend. His clash series with the 'indirects' player Stormzy is a must. His Daily Duppy and Fire in the Booth is also a must!
Then end up back with the old gangsters Pete and Bas for the bar-heavy 'Sindhu Sesh' and 'Browns'
In the UK we're all about the bars and flows!
Highly Recommend JME-man dont care ft giggs for more JME
Also 96 Fuckries is great (basic opinion but true)
Love seeing you learn about Grime, gotta react to JME - Man don't care, a classic of grime
Please check out the remix to this track, it has multiple artists, incredible energy from all of them.
Skepta and JME are brothers in real life. Their entire siblings are all successful in the UK with one deciding not to be in the media spotlight. Skepta is one of our GOAT. As for sounding like Akala I'm not sure how you think us working class people sound in London. This is how I speak lol and it's normal to Me (easy London born and raised)
Grimes been around since like 2003. 100% UK grown.
absolutley love watching you react to UK legends like this. keep up the good work lads.
So this is the point where you arrive at the pinnacle of UK music and see the true culture that has formed and developed the music you listen to today.
I would say the pinnacle was raves like escimo dance and sidewinder a few years before this is more mid period grime !!! Skepta had been about 10 or more years at this point
I love seeing the Americans listen to our music and actually get it. 💯
Skepta is one of the OG’s of grime !! You should react to his tune Shutdown!! Raves would literally nearly get shutdown when they played it because everyone would get so hyped
Old school meridian crew ! If you know you know !!!🔥
Dj is called DJ maximum, they are all part of a collective/label called Boy Better Know that was started years ago by JME and Skepta (they are blood brothers)
JME is a pioneer in the game
More GRIME reactions!! Watch some documentaries to learn about the culture: THE RISE OF GRIME (Documentary).

This is a dope documentary, they should also check out GRIME: The Documentary, that's a good one, and Flirta D: The Guy That Makes Noises
@@DuaneFLWharton Yeah, they should watch all of them and learn the culture.

SKEPTA is literally the king of grime.
I’m actually quite surprised you haven’t heard of Skepta before. He’s had songs with Pop Smoke and Kid Kudi, a lot of American reactors I’ve seen have actually heard/know him.
Anyways, enjoy these two, they’re UK greats
and ASAP rocky
Yup due to kids and work we pretty much did not discover new artists for the last 15-20 years... 😬 Climbing out of that hole now thanks to you all!!
That's DJ Maximum, skepta and JME are part of a group called boy better know and maximum is the DJ for them! You could also check out Frisco(3. 2. 1.) and Jammer (Grime Boy), some of their songs are crazy good! For skepta I'd listen to Man next and JME issmad and you'll see how good he is lyrically(GENIUS!)
Issmad is such an unreal concept song very tekky
Man don’t care from JME and Giggs is a legendary song in the UK definitely worth a listen
Skepta is pretty known in the US, check out Praise The Lord with ASAP Rocky
You guys should watch Skepta Plugged in for sure
Grime predates drill. I grew up with it in the noughties. Grime evolved from a mix of earlier UK rap and Garage music which is also uniquely British. UK drill is actually a completely different sound and more reminiscent of American drill. Grime is unique to the UK.
Fun fact: Skepta is now sponsored by Rolls Royce and does brand deals with them. He also has 2.
Court was getting the fu*k down! Man couldn't dance enough in his seat 🔥🔥🔥 great reaction as usual guys.... I'm here for it 👑
The guy on the decks is Dj Maximum, thats the Dj BBK tours with innit
I thought US had already caught up with what's going on in the UK. Hello from the past! Haha legends for this
"anytime you see me wearing a glove" is a super old school bar of skepta's from back in the day yall
Video famously cost $100. The bad boy line is because they actually did a Diddy Dirty Money remix
We have drill too but grime is a higher bpm, definitely gotta do more of these two!
We always been here. You just arriving to the party late boii 🤙🏼
That’s DJ Maximum from BBK
I love these UK reactions
The garage and jungle was the time most exploded as they rode the music in dances
Grime is just grime. It began in the eary 2000's as its own genre derived from other genres such as UK Garage and UK Rap amongst others. Skepta and JME are brothers, they also have a sister called Julie and another brother who are all extremely talented and creative individuals. Maximum is the DJ, part of BBK and you will notice him at all of their shows etc. As BBK always have, they support one another and always keep each other on. Also yes, I am a big fan of grime and BBK lol
P Money fire in the booth

Garage and jungle was electronic music from the streets bCk in the late nineties 2000s garage went more to grime and jungle became drum n bass. Wiley kano septa and more were the ones that took grime further.
Jme is on a BBC 1extra radio /video with general levy....it's fkn crazy good. You guys will love it
If you want more Grime you should hit up Devlin. Check out his FITB, GRM Daily Duppy and his F64 Freestyle👊
Should look at the All star remix of this song represents the sound of the UK around the time which Grime was most popular
We Need a SKEPTA - PURE WATER !!
Grime is from garage and house and drum n bass all of which predate trill drill and trap

JME, TEMPA-T, SHORTY FREESTYLE LIVE ON WESTWOOD TV!!!!! PART 1 IS JUST UNREAL!!!!
What makes grime grime was the beats done at 140bpm
I would definitely recommend checking out any of the grime originals live sets ! They have a you tube page ! It’s a rave they used to do with about 30/50 mcs at each rave and all quality !definitely check out the durty goods one ! He was a legendary clash mc who even Wiley could not beat and before he showed up at this rave he had not been seen for years and crowd and other performers were hype when he spat !!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
This track came out right when Skepta blew up Internationally
He could have been making more Pop shit to make him rich but he always likes to remind everyone no matter what he still is a Grime kid for life
Thats why they made the nostalgic beat and video
Notice the headphones plugged in to the mic jack, old school shit when mans could only afford one mic and theres two mc's on the set 😅
P money, Frisco, flowdan, d double e, JME, just a few of the names you need to check out. These are grime artists that have been about since what I would at least consider the golden era of grime. These days the grime scenes saturated with Instagram rappers but you need to go back a fair few years for the Grime gold.
Ya'll GOTTA do "New Era" by House of Pharaohs & JME that dropped this year!
I've been telling you about Durrty Goodz for a while now...he's the Don Dada of Grime MC'ing 🔥🔥🔥
End Boss is his most recent track with bars in it like "If grimes Bible...I'm from the book of Genesis" or "I'm linked up with pyramids in Cairo...I'm the mystical one with the fly flow...I lit up pirate radio sets....while they took notes with Biros"
I have a few track suggestions for new era artist/albums that you’d guys rly like:
Joey Badass-“Head High”
Issa Gold-“Underwater”
Lute feat JID & Saba-“Birdsong”
Danger Mouse & Black Thought feat. MF DOOM-“Belize”(aware neither of them are new but the track came out this year)

Jme and Skepta are legends and I’m so glad you’ve found them. If you’re gonna do more Jme (Integrity, ISSMAD or Test me) more Skepta for vids I’d recommend Man as a grimey track and bad energy ft Wizkid although I must say if you enjoyed this I’d recommend in your free time listening to the album Konnichiwa by Skepta as In IMO it’s the greatest grime album to have existed. Even won the mercury prize👀
Bad energy is more of a vibey song to clarify so not grimey as such

Grime is Original UK Rap that went on from 90's upto like 2010's , Drill is the new stuff that 16 year olds listen to
There is a genre called UK Drill which came together from Chicago Drill and Grime. Very different sound and very different culture around the music and artists, although you can hear the grime influences in there.
Grime was named grime way after it started. It all comes out of jungle, dnb, and dancehall
Jme and skepta are brothers, listen to jme man don’t care, it’s one of his most popular songs
Haha, carry on with this shit man, theres so much good stuff to find. A lot of mega UK artists just spitting bars for days.

Grime has no synonym. If any parallel exists it would be: grime is to rap as punk is to rock
