When you know London slang almost all their bars have double or triple meanings. Honestly it's insane how cleaver some of it is.
7:00 - "Mess with the cake I'll Battenburg him". Battenburg is a kind of cake made by slicing out square sections and rearranging the pieces to give a checkerboard pattern. In the UK ambulances have a checkerboard pattern, so to "Battenburg" someone is to put them in the ambulance. "Kipling" is a brand of cakes too, as well as a reference to the author.

That MLK/Hoover line and scheme has multiple layers. It's rumored J Edgar Hoover had MLK killed (fall asleep to the sound of the Hoover) Also, (sleep with fishes now he's tuna) can also mean Hoover Dam. Some of my favorite bars from this banger.

The line about "Dream like Martin Luther" and "Fall asleep to the sound of the Hoover" is more than just about a vacuum cleaner. Martin Luther King was a target of then FBI director J. Edgar Hoover back in the day. Pete and Bas are awesome. Y'all also missed the Betty Crocker bar...lol. Interesting how y'all got so many of the words they were saying wrong...they were actually on the screen...lol. Funny how so many people doubt them being able to write (with help from their grandkids on the modern slang) and deliver...but they just got it.
Pete and Bas have the best bars in the UK right now. They go hard. Almost double meanings and running themes all through. If you know old man London slang and references and current UK drill too their lyrics are genius.

Loved that reaction! 🤣 Pete and Bas are legends here in the UK. Few questions you might have as you do more reactions. Pete is the small one Bas is the tall one. They write their own bars but, their grandsons taught them the slang. Legend has it they were on the wrong side of the law in their younger days dabbling in this and that. Whether that's true or not doesn't matter its more fun to believe it 🤣 They used to be taken as a parody but, they are now taken as serious artists. Please react to their plugged in w/fumez. That platform is normally only serious drill artists but, Pete and bas shelled it down.
Don't get me wrong, I love Pete an Bas vids, but they are not real. There's a vid where a guy did a bit of digging and uncovered the truth. Just search Pete and bas truth if tou want to know. I'm a little sad that I found it to be honest.

@@darkmatter7668 I don't understand why having other people write the lyrics matters. There are other rap artists that do the same (Drake), and it is extremely common in other genres of music. It's a stupid standard to hold people to, and it often seems arbitrarily applied. These guys still do the performing/singing/rapping of the songs.
@@123darkdeal There's a difference between being an established artist who already wrote high quality songs solo (Drake) and being a paid actor who is hired to parrot someone else's lyrics. Major labels decide an artist is overtaxed and hire writing teams to assist in the workload. What Pete and Bas are doing is very different, especially considering their managers are not honest about the purity of their act.

Once you learn UK Drill slang you'll be able to fully appreciate the masterpieces Pete & Bas turn out. Like at 5:53 - "Burn that rubber like I'm Michelin, 5 star *food* that I dish to them", in Drill slang "food" is drugs.
Two British things I learned like a month apart about this song. "Switch suits like i'm Mr Ben", which is a British childrens book in which Mr Benn tries on suits and gets transported to that time period of the suit, which I looked up. A month or so later, someone pointed out the next line delivered by Bas "10/10 gear I shift up to 5th...", I just read it as a car reference 10/10, but it's actually a references to another British childrens adventure series of books Tin Tin. The line ends Mr Benn and the next begins with Tin TIn. Really deep lyrics

10 /10 gear I'm shifting is my favourite reference, every Friday group text from the dealer says that but he said it like Tin tin to link to the Mr Ben line ( UK kids TV references) from Pete before but also kept the car theme linked with selling drugs. So many levels.

i don't think they have an outright ghost writer, i think they absorb information from the people around them, and likely put some lines in that others come up with, but i think the overall structure, flow, and delivery is theirs.

The more UK slang you know the better it gets. For example, after they reference cake a few times starting with the "crocker bet he/Betty" bit, they come back with some more stealth cake references. My favorite is when instead of batter (already a cake reference) they say Battenberg which is a style of cake with a checkerboard... And also the checkerboard designed used on UK ambulances.

You’re not being punked, you’ve just been sleeping on them. LOL. Pete and Bas are the real deal. Got into the game only a few years ago and have been KILLING iT ever since.
Supposedly, they write all their own lyrics with help from their grandkids on the modern slang. No idea if that’s true or if they have ghostwriters, but their delivery is freaking impeccable either way (and it’s not like mainstream rap artists don’t have other people write stuff for them).
I’ll come back with some translations for the UK slang. I’m from the States, so I sure as hell didn’t catch ALL the bars, but I’ve caught a good amount. 😊

This song, I think is one of the best examples of how crazy their chemistry is. Their handoffs are just so damn smooth. There’s the obvious one “made love to the ground then kissed….the curb” which is just…an INSANE handoff. And then there’s the subtle handoff of “i ain’t gonna stop till the bell starts ringing….ding-a-ling ding” as in a bell ringing signaling the end of his few bars.

sadly the problem with trying to see if theyre lip syncing is that most of these uk freestyles are recorded and then filmed afterwords, i believe they have people helpjng them write or just writing for them, however they perform the songs and even do live shows
They really are insane they have so many specific references it's hard to keep up and they really are what they are talking about bas( the tall one ) also was a well known bareknuckle boxer and his dad used to own a known bareknuckle gym there's also loads of rumours of them doin some not so legal things on the side .
And they actually have a whole crew with at least 4 other older gents who also make great music somewhat in a similar direction like pete and bas
