- The purpose of this video is to provide an educational history of the swastika and encourage the positive use of this symbol in all forms.
The swastika is an ancient symbol dating back to pre-historical times. Swastika comes from Sanskrit meaning "to be fortunate".
The swastika's history has been misunderstood on the internet, the swastika is more than just a symbol from Buddhism or Hinduism, and predates both those religions. It is one of the fundamental shapes that humans have used in nearly every culture since the beginning. Both Left and right facing swastikas, 卍 & 卐 respectively, are common forms of the swastika seen throughout history and all across the world.
The oldest known example of a swastika was from over 10,000 years ago, and later this shape was one of the iconic symbols of the Mesopotamians, Greeks, Romans, Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Celts, Aboriginal Americans, Sub-Saharan Africans (the Ashanti of West Africa), and Medieval Christians.
After the Nazi adopted the Swastika in 1920 it gradually came to be associated with white supremacy in western culture. Any use of a Swastika in association with Nazism of any form should not be tolerated.

I was in a tattoo shop in the American midwest and two guys from India came in and one of them wanted a tattoo and it included the 卐 woven throughout. The tattoo person helping was unsure how to proceed. It made for a pretty interesting 5 minutes of ppl watching!
I have it tattooed but not in a racist meaning and I always reassure people.

I was working as a painter refurbishing a small 1903 apartment building in what was in 1903 and remains today a largely Jewish neighborhood. (for the record I am also Jewish!) The person who designed the building was Jewish, the original (and current) owner was/are Jewish. The entry had carpet that was laid over asphalt tile that was laid over ceramic tile (100 years will do that!) When the Asphalt tiles were removed, I saw why they put crappy asphalt tiles OVER the much nicer ceramic tiles. The ceramic tile had a border motif of swastikas. (It was a very nice pattern on the rest too) Sad that the original artistry had to be covered up because evil people stole an ancient symbol and corrupted it. It's STILL there, But Yeah, it's covered up under modern floor covering. Maybe in another 100 years the world can reclaim the symbol for its original meaning.

But the thing to note is Hitler (and Germany) used the word 'Hakenkreuz' for the symbol. But for some reason, the west took the Indian Sanskit word "Swasthika" to describe the symbol later. That's what casued all the confusions. Now the west is against any Swasthika type symbols. Even Japaneese Animes are changing the designs because the white westerners get mad if they use an alphabet in their language! If the west just used 'Hakenkreuz' to describe the exact Nazi symbol and made it illegal, then it's not a problem.
True, but banning Hakenkreuz instead of just making Swastika discouraged is like saying that the cross symbol is fine but it is completely illegal to use a lowercase t. They are visually almost the exact same and you could easily just use the t (or in this case, Swastika or even Sauwastika) as an easy replacement for the banned symbol

Totally agree, first time I saw the swastika as anything else than a Nazi symbol was tattooed onto the shoulder of a fit Chinese man.. It really made me thing.. WHAT THE... I mean the guy didnt look like a Nazi.. It made me go home that night and do some research.. I had known the Roman Catholic Church used it, but had not known much else..
Was blown away by what I found, I think it long overdue we took the meaning back from those that gave it a bad wrap..

卍 / Swastika, resembles the "great force / great energy" in the universe. thats how the energy presents. just look at the nature, look at the whirpools in the ocean, look at the typhoon or the hurricane, look at the solar system or the galaxy. the 卍 / Swastika. in China nobody see that as evil symbol, its just a symbol from Buddhism. indeed some times we feel weird that when somebody pointed out that we must not use that symbol because its bad. but one thing we can tell, the Nazi Swastika is like rotated 45 degree . which is very different with the normal Swastika we use. this 卍 / swastika is very very ancient, and its a common belief of humanity. in the Trypillian culture found in Ukraine, which can probably date back to 7000 years ago. they worshipped both Swastika and Tai Chi Symbol. yes, i mean "Tai Chi" symbol, in Ukraine. you can google the pic of Ukraine Pavilion in Shang Hai World Expo, and you will be amazed for what the Ukrainian found in those prehistoric remains . both Swastika and Taichi Symbol is actually how ancient people describe or explain how the universe or this world works.

In the U.S we are more concerned about if a symbol or image offends someone than what the real history of it is or the context in which it’s used, the Swastika is the greatest example of that.

Great video. Just to educate you a little more on its origin and meaning. It is an ancient Vedic symbol representing the 4 ages that man encounters between ascension and descention. It is a Hindu symbol and was adopted by the far east through Buddhism, as Gautama Buddha was himself hindu. We are currently in Kali Yuga, or the age of the demon Kali, where righteousness is at its lowest. Hence, it seems to lack no irony that it was stolen by the Nazzis and now not accepted for it's original meaning. Germany has been forgiven for its past, but us Hindus have still not been given our symbol back due to the ignorance of people on the swastikas origin.
What Germany did not steal from the East, they were inspired by Norse mythology's "Swastika symbolizes Power" in the West.

The Buddha was not Hindu (there is no evidence he was Hindu, he was more likely animist). It was probably used as it was a common cultural and religious symbol for peace and enlightenment.
@@Sky-qo3bm The Buddha was in fact Hindu or more correctly said practices Sanatana Dharma as a religious philosophy, as was common with Indians, especially a prince such as himself. If you study into both religions closely or even at a distance for that fact, you will see the commonalities.

As many might already know, Germany can be very strict regarding censorship of nazi ideology and imagery, like the Hakenkreuz, outside of educational contexts, so even though this is not supposed to include any of the other forms of the swastika used throughout the world and history, being born and living there, I've seen many cases where localizations of foreign media depicting the symbol (as you said, it's pretty much as ubiquitous as the spiral, star or simple cross, so it's no wonder it's everywhere in media and pop culture too, especially outside the west) were overly cautious and either removed or changed the symbol, or anything remotely resembling it even, to avoid even the slightest chance of being accused of depicting the Hakenkreuz; some examples - mostly manga/anime bc that's where I usually encountered this - include Whitebeard's Flag from One Piece, Manji's emblem from Blade of the Immortal, and multiple Pokemon TCG cards. The regulations have become more lenient recently as far as I know, and typically they'd let it pass as long as it's clear from the context that it's not nazi related (ex. like on that buddha statue), but localization teams still seem to tread carefully
I agree that we should separate the basic symbol from the hate - as long as we keep reflexively thinking NAZI just seeing a hooked cross, not only do we create an aversion to symbols used by other cultures and with that a potential for xenophobia and discrimination, it allows actual neo-nazis to continue to misuse the symbol to represent their hate, to gather underneath it and make themselves appear ever-present in an area with a few quick strokes of graffiti, sending the message that "you are not safe here" to those they target

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean - it was and still is used by various extremist groups to represent themselves and the hate and violence they practice, making it a symbol of hate by association. As I said, I believe we should make an effort to remove this association in the near future, to not let this symbol remain one of hate, but the reality is that in the past as in the present, it unfortunately is used that way.

It is the cross of Saint Peter, who died crucified upside down on his own request, and was used as the primary symbol of a few Catholic sects, up until it started becoming associated with satanism. Similarly, an American might be shocked to find the "ghost hoods" of the kkk being used at a fair few Christian sects around the world where they are not associated with hate, rather with worship. Hitler never called his symbol as "Swastika", its just some Western white Christians & NY Times, after Hitler's death who wanted to disown Hitler as a white western Christian & started calling Naazi symbol "Hukencruz" in German or "Hooked Cross" in English as a "Swastika".
Swastika is a 1000s of yrs old meaningful Sanskrit language word, which means good fortune & still today used by Hindus, Jains & Buddhists as a peaceful symbol.
It was also used in "The Legend Of Zelda" level 3 design, Manji… which when it was put on cartridge form and sold in the US Nintendo didn't ask for a change from it! The first image is the sauwastika, not swastika. When it's clockwise, it is the swastika. When it is counterclockwise, it is the sauwastika. I suspect the origins of the two different signs are their respective perspectives of the Big Dipper throughout the seasons when viewed from the Northern Hemisphere (swastika) and Southern Hemisphere (sauwastika), but meanings associated with good and bad fortune were assigned later.

Most people will probably still associate the swastika with the Nazis even though it is supposed to be used as a form of well-being and good luck. I feel well-informed after watching this video about what the swastika is supposed to be used as and not what people think it was used as.
In Gone With The Wind, in the second part, there is a scene which takes place after the war, where a Union official is walking in the door of a southern mansion. The door posts are designed with a continuing series of interlocking swastikas.
I read that it comes from the way the big dipper moves across the seasons, and that in ancient times, the different peoples of the world used it as a calendar to know when to sow and when to reap. The fact that it has such a bad press and even it's forbidden in some countries makes me think that there's some secret behind it we're not being told. It's certainly a powerful symbol.

It’s the symbol of Buddha (enlightenment). Later people watered down its meaning and took it to mean good fortune. After Hitler appropriated it, its use fell out of favor in the West, though it never did in the East. Nowadays many Westerners have become unaware of its prior use, and assume it was invented by Hitler. More people need to learn about this history. It’s sad that the best symbol that exists in the world is considered by many to be something not good.

I once saw, in Brixton Prison, London, a flooring design featuring the design. It was created by the square tiles having another, approximately one tenth size, square on one corner. I couldn’t help but use it to discuss what *I* understand of the symbol: the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water. I’ve never seen anything like that floor, before, or since. As I’m writing this I have on my wall an Ashanti ‘mask’ featuring a curly/swirly version. The Nazis were like shoplifters on methamphetamine, often literally. I have seen the ‘lightning’ SS symbol in Norwegian petroglyphs from the early Bronze Age. The ‘S’ is a rower in what can only be described as a ‘longship’. I have often thought that it would be a good idea to filch the sun-symbol back again, so I wish you luck!
I stayed in a hotel in a small New Mexican town that had swastikas all over the front. The beautiful old theater in downtown Albuquerque has them all over the interior. Same reason. It was a Pueblo Indian symbol in these structures were built before the Nazis. Then I went to Taiwan and saw the Buddhist temples with their swastikas on top.

You mentioned unicode has Chinese characters for the swastika, but it actual has several other variants unrelated to Chinese.
I like it's asymmetry, and sometimes find it helpful in compact spaces when arranging things in a 4point grid area.
That's part of the beauty I think: There is enough asymmetry to set it apart from basic shapes such as squares, circles, triangles, etc. But at the same time the swastika still has multiple axes of symmetry, giving it a sense of balance, setting it apart from chaos.
Not to um-actually you but um actually it has rotational symmetry (yes I know you mean that it doesn't have mirror symmetry I just wanted to point it out)

It’s like cancel culture and the woke mentality to forget original meanings, redefine and use terms out of context and inappropriate usage. We ought to forget the WWII usage and embrace it’s more universal meaning. The thing is, we can see its past use, but have we truly forgotten its meaning? That’s the depth we ought to regain, and not let ideology be divisive, but maintain universal unity, which seems to be the origin of this symbol. It’s a very conservative approach, yet give credit where credit is due, that is to preserve the things that are sacred and unite humanity and our diverse collective of culture.
I'm not gonna lie I feel a bit weird about reclaiming the Swastika. It would be nice if we could all be grown up about this though.
This is one of the symbols of Kether, on the Qabalistic Tree of Life. It's known as Flyfot cross, and represents the 'beginning of the whirlings' or the big bang of manifested creation. I think it may have been conceived by modern occultists though, rather than through the Hebraic Kabbalah. This video is great.

The 1st image posted is not the swastika but the sauwastika.
The 2nd image is the swastika.
They are not the same but opposite forces.
The difference is the swastika rotates to the right, which represents masculine energy.... while the sauwastika rotates left, which represents feminine energy.
The German swastika yet is different in terms of being slightly rotated in a right angle.
If we talk about the swastika... it represents the rotation of the north stars ( big dipper ) above earth, having the polar star ( Polaris ) as its main center.

Thank you for your inspiration! Growing up in Asia, I used to regard it as a very old fashioned symbol. What I didn’t know was that this is actually a heritage from our Neolithic ancestors. Now I really wonder what it symbolises in the past. Or perhaps it’s just a design without any specific meaning.

I like the celestial hypothesis of the origin of the hooked cross. It speculates that about 10,000 years ago a comet approached the Earth and from our perspective the outgassing and rotation of the comet looked like a swastika. That's why it spoeared around the same time in various cultures around the world that had no contact or cultural exchange

the swastika shouldn't be just a nazi symbol, but.. without proper context to westerners, it is.
in a western context, whenever you draw it, you must make sure what you mean is clear. If you graffiti it on a wall, that is a hate crime, no matter how well meaning you meant it.
if you doodle it in your notebook and someone else see it, you'll have some explaining to do.

A very interesting video and a lot of information. I would caution people drawing it though, I think like when people speak they need to think first. If you are for example in a classroom setting or at work, drawing the swastika multiple times in your books/on paper etc, could get you into serious trouble. However incorporating it into artwork, ceramics etc, would be a different setting. I would hate for anyone to get branded a nazi, neo-nazi or white supremacist when they are trying to practice the swastika symbol.

I remember hearing the origins of the swatsika was Buddhist or hindu but it’s even more fasinating to hear that its orgins even predate that and that it’s something used in multiple cultures and faiths. It’s sad to see that a hateful group misused a symbol that lead to it being generally seen as a hate symbol rather than its orginal good meaning and cultural importance. I guess it’s an important lesson to understand that a symbols orginal meaning and history is important to learn and that the evil actions of a group can change the perceptions of that symbol.
This symbol wasn't independently developed by multiple cultures at the same time.
All the cultures that used it are descendants of Ancient North Eurasians (ANE), including Native Americans. When you look at the evidence it suggests that it was spread by them.
The ANE lived in and around Siberia 40k-20k years ago, until climate change cause them to move into Eurasia and the Americas around 20k-10k years ago.
They make up half the genes of Indo-Europeans and Turks and Mongols, and most of Native Americans (95% Y haplogroup Q, the others stem from ANE too).
Their descendants took over ancient Iran, moved into the rest of the Levant, moved into India, took over Europe (Y haplogroup R), Xinjiang (Western China), even prehistoric Japan (Jōmon), some even moved into Central Africa (R1b1b-V88).

It's still amazing how destructive that Nazis really were. They were only in power for about 20 years and they caused untold millions of deaths, change the face of Europe and it's borders, forever tainted a 5,000 year old symbol, created a system of hate that people unfortunately still believe in till today and even destroyed themselves and their empire.

Some could say that it symbolizes movement or galaxy but its just simple shape that because of it's simplicity appeared in many primitive cultures.

I was born in Hindu parents and I believe swastik symbol has power so I made western type of swastik with copper metal and I put it in wall of southwest side.

A good history lesson, but I respectfully disagree with the call to action at the end. The symbol itself _had_ cultural meaning in the west beyond the Nazi party. Now, it is intrinsically linked to that past just like the names Adolf Hitler or Nazi itself. Meanings change over time because our culture is alive and evolving. Ironically, to call for a return to tradition in embracing the swastika is not dissimilar to the very calls to tradition the Nazis themselves made.
The symbol was the essential representation of quite possibly the most significant event in the last thousand years. To deny that modern history it has is just as unfortunate as ignoring its use prior.
