So grateful for this video. This shopping centre was incredibly important to me. Met my first girlfriend when she was working at the Glue store. Had my first ever date there at Crinitis. Had lunch here at the food court every day at my first job. Really emotional to see this again and having a chance to relive those years, nearly half my life ago. Thank you.

Speechless... I remember when it was first built. Only one or two shops were open in time to feed the bicentennial hordes- total s---tshow! For all the years it has been there, it never seemed a particularly substantial structure. Almost as if what is happening now was always on the cards. That's Sydney for you.
Thanks for recording it, before it is forgotten completely. Important work!

I agree. That it was perfectly good. They could have updated the inside. Rather than spending money to rebuild it. The biggest thing is they have done this at parramatta. It now looks horrible. There is no heart or soul. Let’s demolish an entire suburb cbd and rebuild it. Gone are the many shops and the historic buildings. I wonder how they will recycle the materials.

@@tedes72it’s a waste of money rebuilding it. Shops and restaurants will be paying more to cover costs of the rebuild. It will remain vacant. This happened to the Argyle at Rocks and World Square upper levels after the monorail was torn down.

I remember them from when I lived in Sydney in the nineties and early noughties. Always made a point to pick up some fudge from there whenever I was in the area. Looking at their website, it looks like all they do now is provide pop-up cafes for events - no mention of them making fudge anymore. Hopefully they will open a new store somewhere soon.

Not sad to see it go. In the nineties I lived and worked nearby. The restaurants were overpriced, serving very average food. They existed for tourists who would not be returning. The rest of the shops were at best adequate along with the food court.

I'm from Ireland. I remember going into the British lolly shop in 2009 & placing a bag of clove rock sweets on the counter to purchase. The shop assistant, not knowing where I was from, helpfully cautioned me by saying 'I have to warn you that if you've never tried these before, they have a very sharp taste. They can be unpleasant if you're not used to them'. I laughed, told her I was Irish, had been eating them all my life & in fact had had a bag of them just a couple of days ago before leaving Ireland 🤣. I appreciated her honesty 👍🍬 😁

Looks like those videos on the death of shopping malls of the 90s in the US. I agree it’s very dated. They need to build something more innovative, modern, yet sustainable place. Darling Harbour is a central spot for visitors. It really needs to be globally competitive. Needs to have more interesting shops.

I found this on the harbour side website
Mirvac Group has submitted a revised development application for the redevelopment of its Harbourside Shopping Centre at Darling Harbour in Sydney.
The redevelopment will deliver a new public domain of over 8,200 square metres and generate more than 6,100 jobs.
The proposed plans for the Centre, built in 1988, provide an opportunity to transform it into a key tourism destination for Sydney and deliver a world-class mixed-use development. The proposal updates the Centre to a quality consistent with its surrounding landmark developments, including the International Convention Centre, Barangaroo and Cockle Bay Wharf.
Mirvac’s Chief Investment Officer, Brett Draffen said the updated plans provide significant public domain benefits, including a widened waterfront boulevard with more seating, a new pedestrian bridge connecting to Pyrmont and a north-facing 1,500 square metre public plaza. The redevelopment is expected to deliver more than 4,000 jobs in the long-term and approximately 2,100 construction jobs during the building phase.
“The new-look Harbourside Shopping Centre will provide locals and visitors alike with access to a range of open public spaces as well as improved retail, dining and entertainment options.
“Around $15 billion of investment and renewal has been injected into the Precinct over the past decade, and having the opportunity to reinvent Harbourside will complete the area and link Darling Harbour to the wider Pyrmont peninsula,” Mr Draffen said.
“Our plans for the Centre, developed after four years of extensive community consultation, have been significantly improved by feedback from Government, especially around the public space that will open up Darling Harbour and connect to the Pyrmont Bridge,” he said.
“This is the final piece that completes Darling Harbour as a true destination for both locals and visitors, and we are very excited about the opportunity to transform this iconic site,” said Mr Draffen.
Gabriel Metcalf, CEO, Committee for Sydney added, “Pyrmont is the exciting future of Sydney - and Harbourside is an important gateway. This is a welcome and exciting addition to the Darling Harbour foreshore providing significant new public space and benefit for the people of Sydney."
