    Did the Blue Mountains trip recently and whilst old style, they provide an extremely comfortable ride. I'd choose a ride on a V set compared to the wobbly Metro any day of the year

      Whilst I applaud your enthusiasm to keep the V sets, as a driver of them, I can tell you that the poor old girls are starting to fail due to decisions made some years ago. Parts are no longer available to repair them and cannibalisation of sets to keep others running is the order of the day. It is a pity but that is the reality. Love driving them as they ride so well. You know you are actually driving a train in a V set. This also applied to S, K and C sets.

      We should protest that 40 plus year old carriages are still in use in a first world country. We want a modern efficient service with modern rolling stock. Australian made would be better still.

    The v set the train of my childhood, so many memories on the v set catching them from Narara, Gosford, Point Claire and Woy Woy. One point v sets dominated the Newcastle and Central coast line. Weekends would be v sets. My memory of my train trip I remember was me with my nan waiting for the train at Cowan station on a wet rainy day and got on a candy livery v set. It’s going to feel weird when there gone, not hearing that hum on the intercity platforms in a few years. Great video Phil, your one of the reasons why myself and many others got into train spotting

    Thanks for the video.
    I came to Australia in 1977.
    One day in 1977, we had a school science excursion to Dangar Island on the Hawkesbury River near Brooklyn Station.
    We caught the old red rattler at Chatswood to Hornsby. Then we got on one of these V set trains.
    It was a great experience for it felt like one is in an adventure. Even after more than 45 years now, I still have this sensation I am going to somewhere exciting just be on one of these V set trains.
    The seatings are great hugging ones body ok. The 2x2 seat arrangements have that express train feel.
    One of the teachers made a comment to another teacher that the carriages look great and the fare was a bargain.
    Modern day carriages never give me the sense of discovery. The advanced features aren't that exciting in many ways.
    I will try to catch these V set carriages on weekdays for fun as that they only operate on Central Coast/Newcastle services on weekdays- I live near Hornsby.
    I will miss them when they are all gone. It's one of the earliest fond memories of Australia and Sydeny for me as a teen migrant all those decades ago.

    The first time I got in a V set was traveling home to the Blue Mountains with my family in the mid 80s after a day at Manly. We got on and I asked my Dad if he have spent extra money and got us some first class tickets (I didn't know such a thing didn't exist, I was just a little kid). Compared to the old U sets and the suburban stock at the time, it felt like we were transported to the future. For years after that, I would always look on the timetable and make sure I aimed for air-con services, which meant V set.
    I still have to pinch myself that I get to travel in the same type of trains that my Dad did when he commuted in the 80s. In a world where I feel so many things aren't as good as they were in my Dad's day, it's great that the V sets give that that little bit of comfort (both physically and figuratively). They're going soon, which is sad. But boy did this legend get a good run!

    😮 I have decided that Central to Epping as you are doing is a far more pleasant way to go after my recent " sardine can" peak hour experience on the Metro where I suspect that I might have caught a minor respiratory infection . That journey was reminiscent of images of the New York subway or those of Tokyo ! Having said that ,it is very encouraging to see that the Sydney Metro appears to be such a spectacular Success ! It will be sad to see the demise of the " DIM DITs" as I call them . On one occasion , I was on a Blue Mountains train of more recent vintage, and actually thought that it was a suburban carriage until I noticed the toilet !

    I used to live in the Sutherland Shire and would catch a bus then the train from Caringbah to Sutherland station and switch platforms where the train from Woolongong would stop. The next stop was Hurstville and finally Central station. Just 2 stops! Plus you had a toilet and a very cold water fountain. And it had fewer people too! I don't know if it was against the rules back in the 1970s-80s, but it was certainly quicker than the standard 'express' service from Cronulla to Central. It was particularly slow coming into Sutherland station from Caringbah due to the single, sharply curved track and high embankment.
    I think that's all changed since I left Sydney in the mid 1980s. Parry's Milk bar at Caringbah station closed. I see Simple Simon's Pies on the other side of the entrance to Caringbah station is still operating. How I long for their steak and onion or curry pie made with Keenan's Curry Powder (that yellow powder in the orange/red tin), a staple in any 1960s-1970s home. All made in the bakery.
    Nostalgia is a strange thing, and I think I'd be disappointed if I ever went back. It's like the saying 'Never meet your idol as they're bound to disappoint you'.

    I love the V sets. Just so comfortable. And maybe the fact they blast by so many stations.
    I’m awfully concerned the replacement “Mariyung” sets are going to be uncomfortable, sterile, horrible things. Unless I’m missing something they look like M/A/B sets with adjusted seating/amenity but little else. Not fit for intercity purposes. Pretty sure they lack the reversible seating - that’s going to be real fun on the 2hr train rides 😒 A fitting representation of modern Sydney and the modern Gov’s that run them. Bare minimum, all business, zero character, zero F’s given.

    • @RailDoesTravel
      @RailDoesTravel 13 днів тому

      If they used the same seating on the mariyungs as korea's intercity train (ITX, Which is what it is based off of and made by same manufacturer) It would be super duper comfortable which I can confirm having travelled on the ITX to the end of the line once, super good padding and facilities

    • @rakeau
      @rakeau 13 днів тому +4

      @@RailDoesTravel My other concern though is lighting. The V sets, in part to their older design no doubt, have dim lighting and the small, tinted windows which help insulate you from the outside. Carpet helps too. They’re extremely cosy.
      There is nothing worse than stepping onto an M/A/B set, and you’ve got GIANT windows. And if you don’t have a tonne of sunlight, you’re getting absolutely blasted with about 6 billion lumens of very “cool” blue-white light for your entire trip home. It’s terrible, it’s fatiguing, especially when you’re tired and/or on a winters night.
      The V sets have set a high standard and their incredible longevity only adds to that.

    Although the majority of these trains entered service in the late 1970s , there was still a considerable amount of older rolling stock in use . I recall travelling to Katoomba in a carriage with opening windows and retractable shutters. Whether these were the same type involved in the Granville disaster , which, I believe were of wooden construction , I couldn't say , and how much better the V sets would have fared in this situation , one can only speculate. Another point in relation to the V sets is that the interurban lines were not electrified to the extent that they are today when the V sets were introduced . ( Newcastle and Illawarra ).

  • @RonsonDalby

    Definitely going to miss the reversible seats.

  • @Anon-fv9ee
    @Anon-fv9ee 11 днів тому +1

    It should be pointed out the V-set was a bespoke design, intentionally narrower than other standard rolling stock. This was done to allow it to fit the tunnels beyond Helensburgh and Mt Victoria (ten tunnel deviation) where other train types cannot fit.
    Whilst many appreciate the reversible seating, the 3x2 configuration resulted in very narrow seats unbecoming to those of significant girth.
    Also not to be missed will be the malfunctioning doors, requiring humans to manually open on every occasion.

    • @murraykitson1436
      @murraykitson1436 11 днів тому

      Thank you for pointing out that the V sets are narrower than other rolling stock . This would account for the persistent ' mind the gap ' message at EVERY station . This also begs the question as to whether the replacement trains will be narrower as well , or were alterations since made to the tunnels , which would be difficult . When the Illawarra line was electrified , apparently vertical modifications were made to the tunnels to accommodate the overhead wiring due to insufficient clearance .

    • @Anon-fv9ee
      @Anon-fv9ee 9 днів тому +1

      @@murraykitson1436 The new D-set fleet to replace the V’s are standard width and are not narrower. This saved time by allowing them to go straight to procurement for an off-the-shelf design. They are in fact modifying the tunnels to accommodate these trains: milling the walls to make the tunnels wider, track slewing, mods to the overhead catenary and signals.

    I miss the days when the V-sets ran on the South Coast line 🥲 I used to get the train between Albion Park and North Wollongong to go to TAFE and my volunteering gig at a local op shop, between 2008 and 2011, and I caught quite a few V-sets during that time before the H-sets came into service. I also remember accidentally leaving bags of lollies from the lolly shop that used to be at Central on the V-sets when I was a kid after trips to Sydney 😅 I'm both looking forward to and dreading the Mariyung sets coming into service - the H-sets are horribly uncomfortable and leave me with a sore backside after travelling from Unanderra to Central, so it'll be good to see them go just for that. But I really don't like the non-reversible seats on the D-sets, and I especially dislike that the 10-car sets are divided as 6+4 - it looks so uneven and makes me feel very uncomfortable. 😕
