In 1957, the great love of my life and I went to our first big college dance where Roger WIlliams--the man himself right there on the stage of our tiny Ohio school--played "Autumn Leaves" and we talked with him and got his autograph after. She left me the next year to marry another man and ever after, I could not listen to "Autumn Leaves" without choking up. Quite unaccountably, after 60 years, I ran into her in Atlanta and over a hamburger, she told me she had married three different times and had two children but, quote her, "You were the only man I ever loved," and that her wealthy, society parents had "forced" her to marry the son of another set of wealthy, society parents. After hearing her say that, "Autumn Leaves" gets me even more and makes me wonder, as we all must wonder, how our lives might have been different-- if they had been different.
Special guests were a rare and irregular occurrence on the Lawrence Welk Show. This was a very prestigious invitation and Roger was a most prestigious guest - and I imagine the host was speaking very honestly when he said, "...one of my personal favorites..." One of mine too!
@ Eddie Beato. I've been looking for a version of Autumn Leaves with Roger Williams on piano and a male vocalist. I've done a lot of searching on the internet & just can't find it. I remember it from my childhood so it's possible I have something mixed up, but I don't think so. I'm 59 now. Would you have any idea at all if there really was a version like this and where I might find it? I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you!
@@SisterMaryCharlesBronson I don't think Roger did a published version with a vocal. However Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and many others did lovely vocals.
The 1965 version added a chorus vocal. It is not available digitally yet on our channel, but it is on the arranger's channel: ua-cam.com/video/PvDaVBIq29A/v-deo.html
Roger Williams Of course ! I have one question. Does he have his own notes or arrangement ? I would love to have it ! if you do please email to “ sun14colreone@gmail.com “. Thank you
In the prime of his piano career Roger Williams was probably the best in the world. There is absolutely no question that he was a master, of the highest caliber, at the keyboard.
Does anybody know why the melody in 1:53 is there? Is there an inspiration behind it? Is it from another song? It seems out of place but it's really nice in it. I'm curious of why it's there...
It is part of Roger's original recording of "Autumn Leaves." You can hear the same melody at 1:20 on this recording: ua-cam.com/video/MIrJxumhjTk/v-deo.html
Love this arrangement. No doubt Roger was inspired by Chopin's Etude in a minor, Op. 25 No. 11 ("Winter Wind"). He could probably play that piece brilliantly as well!... 😎👍🎼🎶🎹

Imagine a piano song without vocals hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song did.
There's no better musical version of autumn leaves than Roger Williams
Thank you!

Agreed

Simply put .... the FINEST there ever was!
Lawrence Welk, his orchestra and ensemble, and Roger Williams were consummate professionals.

My mom would play this on the piano for me
The last few notes was the last leaf
Ha, I never thought of that :)
@@RogerWilliamsMusic Yes you did. 😉 wink 😉. This was when audiences loved the flashy dramatic performances. Arpeggios galore. Good stuff
He is interred at the Crystal Cathedral Common’s.
Yes, at the Cathedral Memorial Gardens in Garden Grove.
RIP
Thank you Martina
I’ve heard other great pianists play Autumn Leaves but they don’t do Roger’s run (arpeggio?) and it doesn’t sound right.
Great
Joseph kosma would be proud
Second only to u montand’s
Isn't this choping etudes but autumn leaves?
a lot of classical especial chopin influence here
Mr,piano
Back when Baldwin mad some of the best pianos in the world. Steinway, Mason and Hamlin, or Baldwin.
