      yes, and whoever was that idiot reporter? Shame on him. He did not do his job properly. Just asked the first man he saw with a dogsled bringing in the serum his name and his lead dog's name. That's it. He did not use his brain, thinking this guy does not look as tired and dishevelled as he should have been if he trekked through the storm in ice and snow for 600 miles. ha,ha,ha! So are they going to put a plaque under Balto's statue explaining the error and naming Togo as the true dog hero? he,he,he ...

      Me too. Just adopted a husky, he is the light of my life. Have never been so close, so bonded with another animal ever. He’s just about to turn 3, have had him 3 months. Hubby and I watched this a few days before we met him, and again, about a week ago. Cried the first time. Balled my head off the second time, once I knew him.

    You all mentioned of Togo the remarkable Husky. But there was other Huskies involved in the journey which took over 300 miles bring the serum to Nome. I think we should give credit to all the dogs that was involved not just Togo. Yes Togo was the leader of the pack. I had watched the movie and it had me in tears also laughter when Togo was a puppy. I agree the movie should have award for the hard work that was involved.

      I composed a kick-ass response to Lorraine’s comment and thought I posted it, but I don’t see it. I’ll try to recreate as best I can.
      The movie, of course, was about Togo because it is believed he never received the recognition he deserved for the amazing effort he made during the serum run of 1925. The length of the trip to bring relief to Nome was 674 miles altogether. Twenty mushers and over 150 dogs, four of which died in the attempt, participated.
      I agree that every dog, EVERY ONE OF THEM, was a hero, the lead dogs, in particular, were of the utmost importance and had to display many talents that the other dogs lacked (confidence and motivation, agility, strength, ability to lead and control the other dogs in the team, problem-solving intelligence, stamina, and an innate sense of hazards such as thin or cracking ice, and the capacity to ignore a musher’s command that might lead the team into danger). The fact that Togo was a small dog (approximately 45 lbs) compared to the breed standard of 50-65 lbs and was 12 years old at the time of the run make his accomplishment all the more incredible. Balto, also one of Seppala’s dogs, was a good lead dog as well but largely untested, especially in such wicked conditions, and his leg of the run presented few problems (he was able to recover the trail when his musher, Gunnar Kaasen, was forced to go off-trail because of snowbanks too large to negotiate).
      Many, including Seppala, felt that Balto received more recognition than he deserved. The average leg of the journey was 31 miles, and in all, Togo ran 264 miles (including his own leg of 91 miles over the most treacherous part of the trail) in the effort to bring the serum to Nome. I think this is why telling his story was so important. Just a thought and worth what you paid for it.

      @@sunrisefe thanks! The entire ordeal was emotional to me. Imagine losing a child, healthy one week, dead a week later after suffering terribly. Nome leaders were asking men to risk their lives (and their livelihoods as well, since they couldn’t work without their dogs should something happen to them), but everyone worked together to save not only the kids in Nome, but those in the surrounding native villages as well.
      Can you tell I’m a Seppala nerd? 😃

    This movie has me on the edge of my seat! This movie is by far in my top 5 favorites. Acting was amazing and just the movie is whole was phenomenal. That lake part was just heart pounding. The speech was beautiful. Does anyone know what speech he was reciting to the dogs? Is that from the book?

    • @beckyanderson5230
      @beckyanderson5230 4 роки тому +3

      The speech is a modified version of the St. Crispin's Day speech from Shakespeare's Henry V. The passage that the Dr. reads to the girl in the hospital "....to sleep, to sleep" is a passage written by Alfred Tennyson for The Foresters--Robin Hood & Maid Marion"--Act I, Scene III--The Outlawry."
      To sleep! to sleep! The long bright day is done,
      And darkness rises from the fallen sun.
      To sleep! to sleep!
      Whate’er thy joys, they vanish with the day;
      Whate’er thy griefs, in sleep they fade away.
      To sleep! to sleep!
      Sleep, mournful heart, and let the past be past!
      Sleep, happy soul! all life will sleep at last.
      To sleep! to sleep!

    • @PaxDisturbia
      @PaxDisturbia Рік тому

      The sentiment in the St. Crispin's Day speech reminds me so much of the "Braveheart" speech before that Scottish battle against the English, where they were also outnumbered.
