- Former frontman for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver Scott Weiland was found dead on his tour bus on December 3rd in Bloomington, Minnesota. Weiland was 48.

I met Scott in 2011. It was after a show he did and was a very nice guy. Told me and my daughter he was so glad that we came to his show. Never will forget that.
Jesus Christ. There's been so many times you watch these sort of "last interviews" and the person being interviewed looked relatively fine. Scott, on the other hand, sounds and looks absolutely crushed and already defeated. Incredibly hard to watch. RIP, Scott.

Well he had mental health issues and took prescription drugs for that too they can kill you as easy as street drugs if he's taking them with booze etc. too. He didn't seem like an overly happy man anyway I hope he's at rest now how sad for his wife and kids though he sounds like his wife meant a lot to him.

I think that look was disappointment that the interviewer didn't have better questions. It was literally the sort of questions that are usually directed at boy bands. I understand his dismay. He wasn't a boy band, he was a serious artist and should have been treated as such.

Yes, very sad. Those few seconds are what pain truly looks like, and that's the pain that had him reaching for pain killers his entire life. I've been reading a lot of Gabor Mate recently in relation to addiction and the work he does in Vancouver. Fascinating material and well worth looking into. 'In the realm of Hungry Ghosts' is certainly worth the read. Scott found his way to alleviate his pain albeit it in the worst way possible, but it was the escape from that pain that became his addiction. The moment where you leave your pain even for a short time becomes the moments you forever try and replicate.

I have felt this way and I am sure that was how I looked. It`s pain, hopelesness, loneliness. Numbing. He was so polite and answered all of their questions and said thank you. I think he was very vunerable. Heartbreaking. If you see this expression out there in the world, a hug is free to give away. Show love to your loved ones while they are alive. Even if they aren`t perfect. Nobody is.
He's barely recognizable, a ghost of his former self. God bless Scott, may you have peace.

-back in the 90's, of the grunge singers, Scott had my favorite voice. I was listening to "Core" today, and he absolutely wails on that CD !!!! he was a VERY strong vocalist. he had a thick baritone vocal, & he was adventurous with it... he took it all over the place. he did creative things with his vocal that noone else was doing, & he was the ONLY grunge guy with enough balls to dance on stage. and he had an ultra-cool dance, only his... a real cool guy. I saw him live in concert for the "Core" tour. now I'm really glad I did. when you have the opportunity to see an artist, GO. you may not ever get to see them again, or at least not at that stage of their career. RIP Scott Weiland.
@Matt W. Strongly Agree..I'm 43 now, those bands we loved in high school each all had their merits, but STP were musically wayyyyyy more interesting, diverse... "Purple" was a beautiful album, diverse, lush...and Scott had the whole damn package..the voice, the look, the slithery dancing...he was a thrilling frontman. I think he made me question my sexuality a few times in life....I know, right? I couldn't bear to watch the video(s) at the end, you know which ones.
@@jahnwishart-ly6ov I saw him in an interview. very cerebral person. said his goal was to be more than just a lead singer - he always wanted to be a "performance artist". he gave a real performance, rather than just singing. he was a lot of fun, he had a ball with it, and so did the band, & they were really fun to watch !! I always highly anticipated their Letterman appearances, & they always delivered. I understand their desire to be musically diverse, & I'm good with that, but I was a young guy then (I'm 54), & I wish they had done more straight-up hard rock, more in the "Core" vein, because I think that although they were capable of being musically diverse, straight-up hard rock was their real forte, and they should've done more of it. "Core" just absolutely blew my mind at the time, and it still does. as much as I respect Alice in Chains & Pearl Jam, musically, I consider "Core" to be the best grunge album ever - they achieved the best energy & sound on that album. it was exciting to listen to, & Scott's baritone was rich - STP's my favorite, of the grunge bands

Looks like he was down from being sober, maybe he was really trying to quit the last few days of his life not doing interviews high etc. I dont know how he died but he could have relasped after a few days of being stone cold sober and then over did it.

mike jones it was prolly laced with fentanyl. He was sober for very long and heroin always made him slur. His death was accidental but prolly got some laced drugs. He was always my favorite, him and Layne, and Chris Cornell and Chester didn’t commit suicide, they were suicided! Sorry, but CC was 6’4” and he had a blow to the back of the head and 9 broken ribs. Dude fought for his life and they left him with an exercise ban around his neck attached to the door handle. Him and Chester were close friends cuz they both were sexually abused as kids and with their rock status set up charity for abused kids. They both were getting ready to expose child trafficking with a documentary and both ended up dead before it was finished. They stumbled on to something and were prolly going to expose it and were suicided. I will never have peace with their deaths until the truth comes out. Prince and Whitney were killed as well and prolly many others and it pisses me off.

Something is definitely going on behind those eyes. He keeps mentioning his wife and how she was important to him in different ways. He did not pass unloved.

@Ram Attack I'd probably say that logically he knew he had many people who cared for him, but he couldn't emotionally connect with that logic, thus depression. And it was the pain and frustration of depression that had him reaching for pain killers.

His eyes tell the entire story. You can see the pain in his eyes and hear the pain in his voice. He was the archetype of the tortured musican, and you felt and saw that pain with all of his later performances. RIP Scott. Your music was the soundtrack of my life during the last time I was truly carefree, which was high school through college.
First off, I most agree with your assessment in this column of anon comments. The eyes do tell. I know that once a person is so high and yet still can coherently answer, they will push further. This interview he's hanging in there just fine, probably feels like shit and still has to go get some. He's weeks months into being on a good one, a little more was deadly. Probably didn't even feel euphoric, just fell asleep.

I tripped across some random documentary made years ago on the beginning of Velvet Revolver. I really never understood how amazing he was with coming up with lyrics, melody, harmony, etc. He really was extremely talented and it was so natural. Plus probably one of the top 10 frontmen in rock and roll. Some would argue top 5. Sadly I think he was trying to medicate childhood trauma instead of getting help before it got so bad. Then it was like he finally kicked the heroin and just exhanged it for pills he drank on when he wasn't supposed to. I also think toxic relationships like his second wife just made things worse. Scott traded one problem for another and I just think life was so unbalanced for a majority of his life. Its very sad. I think people wanted to help him but I think he was also extremely hard to help because he couldn't dig himself out enough to grab his hand. Its a solid message to all of us that if something happened to you in your life (especially in childhood) don't try to outrun it. Get real help from someone you can talk to because you can never really bury those things. No shame in seeking out help.
Psyche meds. You seem intelligent enough to understand. He still dabbled towards the end but that empty vacuous glare is from anti depressants and genetic health problems. Add to that crazy payments to the ex and just getting older.
I still love you, Scott, all these years later. Your voice is still hauntingly beautiful to me. I hope you're at peace now.

Heartbreaking thing is he was just so tired, exhausted and still kept going through all the touring and interviews. His work ethic was incredible, even though the quality of his performances had dipped. His ticker just gave up.
I wouldn't be the person I am today if it wasn't for this man. Seriously. Stone Temple Pilots were one of the very first bands I liked and bring back good memories, inspire me and have helped me through hell before and still are doing that right now. Scott was an amazing talent and a wonderful person. The news of his death has hit me like a train. I am very sad that another legend has gone so soon but even more so, I am sad to hear another human being with a beautiful soul has gone. RIP Scott. You will be missed.

Abigail Herrera I just finished drawing him and have been listening to his music all day. Minutes after I woke up, I found out he passed and I've been so sad all day. He was so talented and a beautiful person. I'm a musician myself and I write a lot and Stone Temple Pilots are always one of the first bands I give credit to when people asked who my influences are. I'm as sad as I was the day Mike Starr (another huge inspiration) of Alice In Chains passed. Too many of these wonderful talents from this era have died young but they will never, ever be forgotten for a second.

As a gen x'r myself, I am so blessed to have seen STP, as well as Alice in Chains, perform live. Rite at the end of the interview when he just sat there for a second he looked so alone and scared you can see a mans soul through his eyes there was nobody home so sad 😭 Scott still lives in my speakers regularly 🍻
Usually I am not affected by celebrities' lifes, but Scott Weiland's death saddened me a lot. And this interview was just heartbreaking, especially in the end. RIP Scott.
I was at one of his last concerts. His wife was in the sidelines. Duff mckagan was hanging out in the back of the restaurant Hard Rock Cafe. In Detroit. Driving home I told my husband he would not be finishing his tour. Two weeks later he was dead. Went to the same high school. I shouted out our fight song. He finished it😃. I’m glad he knew his old pals had his back. I wanted him to know that old familiarity. No regrets going. Even though it was sad.

Saw one of his last shows in MI also. It was pouring rain in an outdoor arena. It was cold. He brought in everyone off the lawn. I’m glad I stayed and risked being rained on. His performance was amazing. I wondered if he did a better set with more adrenaline from the storm. He played for the hardcore fans that didn’t mind getting wet to see him sing again. Rain or shine. RIP Scott. ❤️

His consciousness was there, humanity and respect in his eyes when he's saying "thank you". He seemed to have lots of signs of neuropathy and degeneration in his body over the past couple years from what Ive seen. It was a lifetime of poisons and pain for him. This is a man who needed a long rehabilitation and rest from the grind, big change in lifestyle. May he RIP.

Yeah I remember how in his last years when interviewed he was speaking so slowly compared to his 90s/early00s ones that it was getting kinda irritating after a while of listening. It's like he had a stroke or was a really really old man. I guess it's where his body started to give up, slowly getting worse.

@@jbilly24 let me rephrase that. You are correct, he did have millions of fans during certain eras of his career. However, with his on and offs with STP and his drug addiction that many did not understand, a lot of "fans" turned their back on him for different reasons. Cancelled shows, inability to perform (due to drug use) ect. I am not one to judge. I have been sober almost seven years and have always appreciated his work, and remember wrestling with the wrapper on the Core CD when it was first released. It just seems to me that a lot of fans hop on the bandwagon once a truly talented artist passes away. Take Sublime for instance. Brad Nowell was an amazing singer and guitar player, who created amazing music for all to enjoy, and I remember seeing them live in 93 and in 94 when 40oz to Freedom was their only album followed by Robbin The Hood. They we're getting plenty of radio play in Florida, yet so many people dismissed them. After Brad Nowell died, they made it big and EVERYONE LOVED HIM "before", when they couldn't even name two songs other than What I Got or Santeria. Regardless, I should have emphasized on what I was trying to say.

Sure, the choice is on you the first time, but sometimes certain things can take a hold of your life without you even realizing it. So by calling him "Another loser ass junkie" goes to show just how little you know about the subject. 8 years clean next month, but I had to distance myself from everyone and everything that you know. Unfortunately, the music industry is notorious for being plagued with drugs of anyone's choice. So even sober, he was surrounded by temptation.
Moving on. He basically died broke. His ex wife had taken most of his money during their divorce, and he was court ordered to to pay her an exorbitant amount from when STP was on the top. Not long after did they break up and his "millions" stopped coming in. But the money owed to her was still owed. He literally did Velvet Revolver for the money. No other reason than to pay the child support. Enter relapse. Do you really think that the Wildabouts was his dream? Shitty hotels and tour bus hell night after night? Easy to see how someone can relapse again, especially in that industry. Im not making excuses for his actions, but I am pointing out that his "career" continuously put him around people who didn't give a fuck about him, and when someone has depression, anxiety, and a history of substance abuse, one bad choice ultimately lead to his untimely demise. But to you, he was just "Another loser ass junkie" SMDH

Damn he is so sick in this interview. You can just see the bondage to chains. I almost feel like his death was his freedom. Ive never seen him so fucked up. It hurts to see him like this. He was such a huge talent. One of my favorite bands of all time and they were right here in my backyard of San Diego. RIP Scott.

that was the saddest I've ever seen somebody. it brings to mind Layne saying "I know I'm close to death." The look he has was the same look Robin Williams had in his last interviews. Poor guy had no soul left to cling to. being sold out and outsold by your own band, what you see is a defeated man. I have had a feeling for a bit now that he would pass soon. I wish that I hadn't had reason to believe that, because now that it's true, and after seeing this, I realize that he knew what was going to happen on some level, and he almost looked impatient for it. for that reason, I'm glad his struggle is over. he is one of my biggest influences, and this whole fucking situation breaks my heart. what would it have taken? what really pisses me off is how much I identify with his struggles, and that also scares me to death.

He was not impatient for it, watch the interview from November 2015 where he says he was about to start a new Wildabouts CD, tour all of 2016, and hints that there might be a STP and VR revival in the future.
Yeah, I don't think he was impatient for it either. I saw that interview and I believed what he was saying about his plans for the future. But he looks really sad here and even a little scared. He had cheated death a lot but I think he had come to the realization that he wasn't a kid anymore and that he was in real trouble this time. I wish he would have gone to his wife, or ANYONE, and told them instead of sinking deeper.

I saw him play maybe about 10 days before this in Detroit and he was pretty much a mess. If you had told me that night that Scott was going to be dead in two weeks I would not have argued with you. Such a shame as it was clear he was not doing well but it seemed that everyone associated with the band didn't really seem to care what his condition was. Just awful, as we had seem him with STP, VR and solo over the years and he was, as always, the epitome of a front man. The Scott Weiland we saw the last time was just a shell of his former self. RIP.
Scott always seemed to me like the kind of guy who projects this titanic invincible image of himself in his performance work but his songwriting and life drama suggests he was actually very vulnerable and felt alone or attacked often
Have been listening to STP since I was 13 years old, I'm 34 now! This is the only band that I slept in a line to get a ticket for, before tickets were able to be purchased on the internet as easy as they are now. I still probably have the ticket somewhere, from his solo concert that got canceled, in NYC (98) because he was arrested for purchasing heroin. So many great memories with this band. BY FAR...my favorite band growing up! The three first records are epics! 4th is ok (still better than 90% of what's out now), 5th "Shangri-la" was GOOD, and even the last one w/ Scott, their self-titled was good. It truly hurts me to see how he looks in this video. Addiction is not a joke and he fought hard! Maybe now he can rest in peace!

Yep that was the 12 bar blues show at Irving plaza iirc. He was busted by a cop around the ave d projects. That's like a last resort place to cop. High risk of arrest as well as getting ripped off. I remember reading that the cop who picked him up was actually an stp fan.

x3, I'm also 34 and used had a mix tape from 93 with STP, Live and Nirvana on it. I was so excited when they finally released "5" that I bought in on the first day. Sadly, I thought Weiland would be the first of the rocker addicts to go, but he made it way longer than Cobain or Staley. Still lost the battle eventually though. So sad that these rock bands don't have any support and a lifestyle of addiction and excess is viewed as part of what it is to be a rock star. It really should be all about the music, not drugs and empty sex.

Yeah definitely an accidental overdose. I've been through addiction myself. You never stop hoping one day you'll be better and I don't think Scott stopped hoping. Like you say, the hard drugs (including booze) can really mess you up. I'm clean as a whistle now over 5 years and feel amazing but others have not been so fortunate
He's such a brilliant artist. His music was EVERYTHING to me in my 20's. I loved him SO MUCH.

My early teen years were of a particular hell on earth--very harrowing, very dehumanizing. Age 15 was by far the most excruciating. I was involuntarily living in a place I dispised, surrounded by people I couldn't stomach; I was suffocating from all of the misery only a small town like that could provide. Then I discovered this band and it felt like such a godsend. The music was altogether therapeutic--comforting, inspiring, entertaining. I would watch live performances and whatever confusion in mind seemed to drop away, because I knew that it was not only okay to be unique, it was a must.
The emotional consequences of those years will carry for as long as I live, and there is not much I can do about it. That is what makes Scott so special to me. He offered beauty at a time when there was virtually no beauty for me to behold. His openness of his own hardships reassured me that It was not just me against the world, others too had crosses to bear. STP was the life vessel that supported my journey through very unforgiving waters. Without them, I'm sure I would have plowed through it somehow, but I would have been all the more scarred.
I just feel so terrible for his young children, whose struggles from the loss of their father far outweigh what I experienced. I saw how the drugs eventually caught up to him in his last years. His voice deteriorated. The once-commanding performace art he brought on stage had disappeared. It was truly heartbreaking. I wanted so much better for the man who gave me so much. Therein was his problem: he never fully realized how much he was loved or how much he touched people with his life. That, for me, is the greatest lesson I can take away from his life and death--never forget how valuable you are, always make a difference in others' lives, and never touch drugs, not even once! RIP, Scott. You will be missed.

@Lisa Surlie He could have, though I was never aware that he did. I do remember him clarifying that his brother, Michael, did not officially die of an overdose, but from cardiomyopathy. So his cardiovascular issues could have been hereditary.
@Lisa Surlie I don't know if they are still alive today, but they were alive at the time of his death. I hope that they are still alive, so that his children are surrounded by a loving, supportive family. He said in his memoir that there is no one on earth that he trusted his children's safety with more than his mother.
Scott was a chain smoker for years, so I assume that his tobacco usage seriously hurt his cardiovascular and pulmonary health.

For those of you watching (thank God for the timelessness that we now have), he was a unique individual that I have seen front Stone Temple Pilots. It's impossible to put into words what he & they have done to a generation in the 1990's. He has made people alive while living & after he's gone. His talents are only captured in video and recordings, but to see him perform feeds life into those who thought they knew life. Scott Weiland was the epitome of music, style, fashion and the veracity that one can only imagine witnessing. He is an icon, always was and always will be...STP, the band itself, is one of the best, love & embrace their music ❤

Ive been thinking about it for a bit now i just cant comprehend how somebody with as much talent and potential selling 40 million records, playing big shows around the world ended up at the end broke with half full venues. He could of had a steady career with stp to keep up his “standard of living” (from Howard sterns interview) but instead chose to burn his bridges and make more bad choices. If anyone can learn anything from Scott its that being a difficult and dishonourable individual will only lead to a steady decline, in the end nobody wanted to help scott just milk him for what he was worth. Don’t get me wrong I really like Scott in his prime and stp but its a shame he didn’t look after himself better despite having gone to rehap and psychotherapists.
