I loved this episode! We keep ducks on our small property in Northern NH, and I always love seeing how others deal with the constant issue of frozen water and food. We also chose ducks because they're much hardier than chickens. We don't supply ours with any sort of heat source in the winter as our research showed that moving them from a warmer duck house to the cold outdoors can cause respiratory issues and make them less able to handle severe cold. Ours handle temps below zero (windchills sometimes as cold as -27 during the day in January and February) in the winter with no problem. The have access to an insulated duck house all day long, and I change their water and food regularly during the day. Sometimes this can even become an hourly chore depending on the temps.
I'm loving all the Flock episodes, please keep them coming!

I've always liked the idea of outdoor farm cats, and then I had a professor who explained how domestic cats can seriously impact native bird populations, especially ground-dwelling species, and can be a particular problem if the cats naturalize (?) in the area. Something to consider! So far loving this channel 😊

I'm vegan and I don't support animal agriculture of any kind, but I can appreciate her thoughts behind this. IF you're going to consume animal product, make sure you know where it's coming from. It's so important!

Most my ducks, mix between Pekin and swedish bury their eggs. Here and there there'll be days where they just leave them where they drop but most often they bury them.

I'm vegan myself but if you HAVE to eat meat it should be produced the way that LOVELY lady does. She's so smart and sensible and above all empathetic to the live stock she keeps. That said, the term OUR BUTCHER SHED gave me the chills ... ha ha.

Did Sanders edit this video?... lol.
When you are not pressuring ducks (exploiting) to lay, they can easily live to be 15-20 years depending on diet and predation. I've raised ducks since I was a kid as pure pets. They are great pets and great in the garden for eliminating pests, particular snails and grasshoppers. They can be a highly effective in veganic gardening and are great for lawn maintenance. Ducks also need soft surfaces to walk on, or they will develop sores on their feet - so keep them off of wire, gravel, and concrete for long periods of time. They also always need enough water to dip their heads in to keep themselves clean at all times. They do molt their wing feathers all at once, making them very vulnerable... but all the small finches and song birds would always come and clean up all the down feathers and take them for their nests. If you can get away with it, a swan is your best defense... nothing messes with swans, not even people.
Pekins were bred specifically to not be broody as they were traditionally a meat production bird -- it is also why they are entirely white (white feathers suggested lighter, less gamey meat). We had a pekin named Rosie who lived to be 16, she never once laid on a nest... she left all that to the other ducks. Her trick was catching lettuce mid air if you tossed it up to her. It is not uncommon for some ducks to partner nest, so two will nest right next to each other. They will shift eggs back and forth - sometimes with one hen having all the eggs! They will then go on to raise them together as well.
unpopular opinion below, reader discretion is advised.
I am glad that this woman acknowledges that she wasn't really ever vegan. At best, she is a more conscientious exploiter... but if you kill animals, you still abuse them. It is her choice to do so, and I think she handled it well that her objection was to commercial production not small scale. But again, it doesn't matter how nicely you treat an animal... if you end their life prematurely, it is abuse. I understand that this is fine for some people, but let's not romanticize the process.
