G’day James, just a quick comment re stitching the bags straps on the flap. The horizontal stitches that you have done will over time wear as a hinge point & fatigue etc. You would be far better off just making three vertical stitch lines or placing a rivet back from the edge if this makes sense to you. Well done on you video & I did appreciate you your candid honesty in the commentary. Looking forward to your next project.
Very nice bag. Thanks for sharing. The way you mad seams by adding that thin strip of leather gave me some inspiration as I have been wondering what kind of a seam I'd like to meke for a leather bag.
Hard learned lessons tend to stick, even if you get a do-over occasionally. I admire your presentation style, as well as your work ethic, and always watch for your next upload. Cheers!
Beautiful bag and thanks for your honest assessment of your own work. Every leather project I make, there are small things wrong with it that I might do differently another time, but it really adds character to your own work. Take care.
At the end of a project I use snoseal. Heat the item with a blow dryer and rub it. It soaks into the leather and helps waterproof it. When I started leather work they didn't have diamond punches for stitching. The awl is tough to learn but I still use it for something's. Don't learn on nice items unless you don't mind blood stains from pricked fingers.
I Feel your pain on the stitching. I too make NiteKore bags using a saddle stitch which I think looks better as well. The reason the pieces do not line up is because, as designed, the holes are set in farther from the edge of the leather then what most people set their grooving tool at. You are wise to start in the middle to begin to get this to line up, but the side gusset will always come out longer. To correct this, punch the holes in the large piece first and count every hole! I actually make little copper tags to place every 25 holes so I don't lose track. Then you can prepare your custom gusset, start with a piece longer than you need and then punch with the exact number of holes required. As long as you have the same number of holes in each piece it will work out!
Hiya and thanks for your message. Yes, the hole laignement issue you describe sounds about right and would explain my troubles with this. If I need to build this again I will 100% try your method, thanks :) Will have to find a similar way to count holes x)
The person I gave it to loves it. The front is somewhat plane, but it is ripe for embarrassment. Have you taken on his explorer? That is a build, but amazing bag.
A total work of Art, Before the resew... A simple pully I found out is a great "Slicker" for the tapered, dyed straps, and endings...of course after a sanding. Very Fine work IMHO Sir. May I suggest a RFID Liner, for your Leather, hand made card holder.
Great video! Those imperfections in the leather are gorgeous. I’m crazy about DieselPunks channel and his patterns are so freaking cool. This is awesome that one of my favorite channels is featuring another of my favorite channels. You did amazing!
Thank you :) Stitching leather is slow to get right but is very rewarding once you've understood how it works. Just keep practicing and you'll get there :)
U could have added one big pocket in the front( just 2 inches lesser than the one u did on the back & one small pocket( 7*5 inches) inside. Just a suggestion as i tried 🙏. Thanks
Nice work. What is the width of your gusset-coupling strip? I'd like to use that style of gusset for a style variation on a mail bag, as I don't care too much for turned out seams.
neatsfoot oil is one of the least colouring products you can put on leather! try mink or Saphir or anything. neatsfoot and n4 are the two products recommended when you want to retain the colour of the leather
@@JamesBerry you can also leave wear points unpolished (inside of staps etc.) that way people can't complain, they patina quick since it's mostly the only thing touching us, and start with mink oil, it's cheap and makes it a really warm caramel
PS..all of the patterns that I've purchased from Tony have center marking on his patterns..centers have small dots on the left and right of the center stitch punch dot.
Yeah, his patterns are great. I was having this issue as I wasn't following the patterns for the stitching part. I'm sure this would not happen if you follow along the stitching holes marked in the pattern.
Thank you James for biting the bullet and doing this in the way that you did. I have the pattern, but am loath to punch ALL THOSE LITTLE HOLES (lol) and was considering using the same process as you have. Watching your video will help me immensely and avoid a couple of the pitfalls you described. Well Done! Where do you get the powdered pigment that you use for the beeswax/neatsfoot oil treatment?
Hahah thanks Ken, I'm glad this video has helped you make up your mind about the process :) I think I found the powdered on amazon while looking for pigments to use in coloring oils, paints, varnishes etc. There are quite a few options out there.
I love your video on making the leather Dieselpunk messenger bag! Do you sell them? If so I would love a catalog sent to Tonya Finster , P.O. Box 202, Roulette, Pa. 16746. I am no longer to hold tools or even a pencil! Also could you make the size of my choice?
Crimson hides irons are incredible eh. Also regarding the affiliate link, do I have to purchase something listed in your shop? or anything on amazon once I get their through your link?
Yeah, I absolutely love my new pricking irons :D They go through leather like in butter! You don't need to buy the items I've put forwards, any purchase you make after using the link helps :)
Hi Gilbert and thanks for your messages. I believe the thickness here was 2,4mm throughout. I find that this is just the perfect width for me for this type of project.
Great video if these videos could come in 10 minutes videos divided into parts {eg; messenger bag part 1} wi some music on top it will so good thanks for sharing the video i am also new at this hobby and i can understand the pain of sanding and stitching leather
Thanks I think I'll make the next videos in several parts to make watching them easier. Glad you enjoy them so far and good luck with your leatherwork :)
I use my own home-made leather polish made out of 40% beeswax, 60% neatsfoot oil which helps to seal it all in, protect and nourish the leather. Just put the beeswax in the microwave for a minute, add the neatsfoot oil (and pigments if needed) mix and let dry in a container : takes about 2 minutes to make great leather polish :D
Thanks for your message ! I think there is approximately 80€ worth of leather in this build. I buy half sides here in france wich are quite expensive and am sure you can find cheaper if you look for it. Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Oh Man,Its luck, u didn't glue the gusset and body, before unstitching for that extra 1 cm... I learned, taking length of body and gusset using thread, and the gusset should always be 1cm lesser than body length 🙏

Love the stretch marks, most unique character in any project.
Thank you! I totally agree, it's a real feature of the final piece :)

I finished that bag last week. His patterns are great.
Oh nice! How's the bag holding up on your end? And yes, love these patterns also :)

Great item! Would highly recommend!
You should hold the gusset with needles/ small wire before stitching so that you would not lose track on the stitching holes.

I liked the polish you made. Good on you sir!
Thank you :D
I've adapted the mix to 60% neatsfoot oil and 40% beezwax now, FIY. This makes it much easier to use.
cool design :p

Thanks for creating it ! Hope you enjoyed the video also.

really useful video thank you from a learner leather goods maker.

Nice video. Thank you. what are the dimensions of the bag and did you stay true to the original pattern size?
Thanks for your message :) The bag dimensions are approx 29cm by 30cm and easily hold A4 folders and documents.

Used shoe polish on military boots for a decade, no issues, so I still use shoe polish on leather goods.
The main problem is people not knowing how to properly use shoe polish, leading to rub off. Otherwise works fine!
