I'm surprised no one is talking about Roshi saying he'd be a villain with this kind of powers. That had me rolling every time he brought it up ^^

It was really cool watching this in theaters 'cause they showed an interview with Makoto Shinkai after, who said he made the movie in consideration for the generation who inherited the weight of the world with global warming, and how fucked up it is that it's their responsibility to fix it or live with it.

You were expecting everything to be fine because Your Name was the only Shinkai movie you've seen. It's actually the only movie he's ever made with an unambiguously happy ending.

People like to put this movie down just calling it a "Your Name" remake when in reality they are two very different films telling a totally different message and story. Sure, there a lot of comparisons you can make, but you can do that with most Directors of most films. Usually directors have a consistent style or consistent themes they like to explore over and over, think Christopher Nolan and time or Tarantino and bloody action. For Shinkai, these are the type of movies he can make, romances with a sci-fi twist. And I love it.

The Ending Sequence with the Grandma is specifically added there just to say that it is going to happen no matter what, it was destined to rain forever since the start, it was just humans sacrificing weather maidens along the centuries just so they could have temporary suny days that would end after a century or so, think about all the people that was killed because they were a weather maiden, it was a sacrifice in for exchange for only temporary sunshine, just like how Hina's powers worked, its temporary, plus the Grandma lived and her original area got flooded, I take that as the film maker's way of saying that no one died, its just that, as the Grandma said, returned to the starting point,. Plus, Japanese have a deep-rooted Buddhist religious background which really features the concept of accepting the undeniable, that the sacrifice made just to push it backward is not worthit, the people of Japan who wanted sunshine are the ones who are ultimately selfish at the end, to sacrifice a girl for sunshine, don't you think that's messed up, the ending showed how we adapted to the rainy days and how it changed things but didn't destroy everything, a city is a like a human, it is born, it grows and dies one day as well, its only natural, just as you cannot push back death, it is also pointless to try to push back the rain especially in sacrifice of Hina and Hodaka's young love, something so beautiful just slaughtered for what is so ugly, adults saving their own asses. Logically it makes sense, but sometimes logic fails you and the heart preveils, just like what happened in Interstellar, the logical decision took them to a worst place scenario than before, Im not saying anyone is wrong for having utilism and sacrificing the minority for the majority, but in this case where it was not a certain death, it just seemed so heartless for the people to kill not only one girl, but also the love behind the girl Hina and Hodaka, taking away what was a starting point for something even more aww-inspring, to kill off the endless possibilities of a young love just for convenience cause people are just too lazy to adapt

idk if anyone noticed this about the movie, but the theme of the movie is that we as humans cant control the weather or the world around us. back in ancient times if weather got bad people would pack up and leave. but that concept has been lost now. we as humans buy property and we expect to live on said property until we die. we forget that the world is changing and the weather isnt gonna change for people. thats what that old man said. he said that the records are saying this is the most rain we’ve ever encountered but he wanted to remind everyone that records didnt start until about 100 years ago. which means tokyo probably used to rain 800 years ago like that ceiling painting. then its shown again when the main character visits that old lady and she tells him he shouldnt feel bad for the rain. she tells him that tokyo used to be a bay and she thinks it went back to how it used to be. and no, no one died with the rain lol. if you think about it if its raining constantly and theres flooding people eventually move out of tokyo. no one died. people just lost their homes. but it shows how powerful them choosing love over the sun. because no human should be sacrificed just for the weather. people can literally just move lol

There legit is a small shrine on top of a building in Tokyo. You can find pictures of it online and it's actually one of the locations for "Makoto Shinkai movies" guides online. Makoto Shinkai is the director for both Your Name and this movie. I did the Your Name one but not Weathering With You. Though some of the locations do overlap since it's based on actual locations in Tokyo. The final scene in the movie is an exact one-to-one replica of the actual place (the path near to Tabata station) except in real life there's a building further up. Say what you will of Makoto Shinkai but he definitely knows how to translate real-life locations into anime.

Suzume no Tojimari is the next movie from Makoto Shinkai which is also part of this same universe and was announced a couple months ago so do look forward for more beautiful scenery and banger of a movie!
