10k-15k mile oil changes is a great marketing ad.
Thats really all it is. But its reslly not good for the car itself

There is one oil filter manufacturer boasting about getting 20,000 miles on it before needing changing. Imagine not changing your oil until 20,000 miles. Even with the best full synthetic oil on the market? That is not good for your car in the long run. A friend of mine had one damaged and ruined tire with AWD and had to replace all four tires. Price, $900.

A pro tip on how to avoid rock chips is to back off. Stop following the vehicles ahead of you so close, it's not only safer for you and will keep any debris that fly's up off your car.
I agree, but here in Canada, they dump heaps of rocks on teh road for tractions and even sitting back on the freeway there are no shortages of clowns who speed by ypu throwing stones. Besrt to stay off freeways.

Most car issues have too do with the owner operating it, either pushing it too hard or not maintaining it on time

I do it the old-fashioned way.
Every 3 months or 3,000km.
I write it down with dates in a small notebook.
I disregard & reset constantly any oil monitor system that is on the vehicle. Yawn ...
Two Dodge Caravans, 1993 450,000 km & presently a 2007 with 'almost 300,000 km on her.
Same for the tranny. I suck out 1-1.5 L of fluid every 3-4 years. Runs better than new!
I have a brand new 23 Corolla Cross to take my frustrations out on. lol
I like ypur style. The clean fluids will help keep thing going much longer

You on it OG!! Excellent excellent advisory video!! I have been changing my oil mobil 1 0W-20 with a oem filter every 6000 to 6500 miles. I sent my oil in for analysis. Blackstone says everything is perfect. They suggested I could go to up to around 8500 miles if I want to. I do ALL my own maintenance. I been around the car business all of my life, sales mostly. Now not all dealerships, Indy's etc are bad but I have seen way to much monkey business over the years. Plus, I like to do things myself!!
Beautiful Benz…. The best thing about leaving Alberta to the southern US…..not having to worry about our cars getting annihilated by winter. Got the wife’s Q3 PPF and undercoated before we started driving it. I agree on the oil changes too. Also by doing it yourself you know exactly what oil is going into the engine.

also, we are more emotional creatures than we like to think: if my car is all shiny then i'm changing the oil ahead of time, if it's all scuffed up, it can wait another week....

If your check engine light is red instead of yellow, stop immediately and have the car towed because you have a problem that could cause major damage if you continue to drive the car. For example, a red light could mean one cylinder is not firing at all meaning raw fuel is being dumped directly into the exhaust system and that can burn out the catalytic converter costing you around $2000 to $3000. Don’t ask me how I know.

Filling up your break fluid is wrong, it's an indication that your break pads are wearing off and you might need a new set. If you fill it up and afterwards you install new pads you will go over the max level and need to take out the same amount as you put in earlier
I had my Mercedes oil changed every 8000km after warranty, instead of every 15000km as recommended by MB.

11:53 I tell my wife about this one all the time. She finally started listening to me when I tell her about putting the car in neutral on a hill, applying the ebrake then putting it in park to avoid torque lock.

I still follow 5-6000 km between oil changes, especially with my one car that has direct injection. Won't do any harm other than to the wallet.

My oil changes for the daily driver are scheduled for every 5000 mi, but in reality it happens around 7000 mi. The Lexus is changed at 5000k precisely.
But we drain/measure/replace the Transmission Fluid at 30k religiously on all cars.

I remember the guys on Car Talk (Ray and Tom Malavazi out of Cambridge, MA) being dismissive about warming up the engine, unless it's very cold. They said the best way to warm up an engine is to drive it but obviously not fast. Now this would have been at least a half a dozen years ago, because one of them passed and the other could not continue the program by himself. It used to be on NPR on Saturday mornings. It was the only NPR program that didn't irritate me. It stuck with me because I'm now old and I never bothered to warm up and engine when the weather was reasonably mild, meaning at or above freezing. I keep my cars a long time and never got rid of one due to engine or transmission failure.

Oil and filter change should be every 5K miles or 9 months. The 10K-15K manufacturer's recommendation of high mile oil interval changes will get you through the factory warranty, and if someone wants to keep their car for many years to come, I would not rely on the engineers who work for the auto maker, on oil changes, which are crucial (as are transmission fluid changes every 30K miles) although it is important to follow other maintenance schedule items as to not void factory or extended warranties. What concerns me, if someone buys a pre-owned certified car even with low milage the previous owner/leasee may have followed this marketing ploy of high mile oil changes and took years off the life of the engine.

Make ur own oil changes. Oil change places r charging 80 to 100 bucks for an oil change that u r not even sure they replace it. Not to mention u pay for synthetic and they put conventional. I get my gallon of Castrol for $28 at Walmart plus 8 bucks the filter.
Themachine, I feel exactly the way that you do! I actually enjoy doing the oil changes and maintenance on my cars. Other than tire rotations, my cars have never been in the shop (since I started doing my own maintenance) ‘15 Toyota Venza 100K miles; ‘16 Honda Civic 200K miles.

When you put film on the vehicle remember that you have to change it out every few years because it gets hard over time. I removed mine after it had been on about 7 or 8 years before I sold it and I had to spend hours peeling little tiny pieces off because it would no longer come off as a sheet. It had become brittle. What a pain in the azz it was.

Cheap PPF/dealer installed is more like 1-3 years, but a high quality PPF will last much longer.

When going in reverse, do you come to a complete stop and then put in Neutral, then Drive? When I'm in reverse I just use it to get some speed, the put in neutral, and after I come to a complete stop I put it in Drive again. Also, when I'm driving down a steep hill and don't need to accelerate, I put it in neutral to save fuel. Or is that bad for the transmission since it switches gears more often?

We purchased a mid year 21.5 VW Atlas premium RLine. Always know your vehicle and get a feel for your transmission. Never over accelerate on the first 3 gears. Don’t roll the transmission from reverse to drive. We also live in Minnesota so anytime there’s any salt build up whatsoever I’m hitting the car wash. I purchased a monthly plan unlimited at 39.99 at my local car wash. Oil changes are before the cold and before the heat. I’m planning on doing the differentials and transmission fluid filters at 50k. We run our car 10 minutes before we drive off that might be a little more than it needs to get the cylinders properly lubricated. I feel it’s nice for the car to get at a proper idle before driving away RPM’s. It’s ok to step on your engine from time to time on the highway to get some of that build up burnt off the intake manifold.

If you do enough driving that your engine reaches normal operating temperature for more than a half-hour, changing the oil at 20,000 Km is fine, provided that's what the manufacturer recommends. If you do a lot of short trips, I would cut that in half. I sold my 2011 GLK 350 with 315,000 Km on it and I serviced it at 20,000 all of the time. The next owner scrapped it with 325,000 Km on it because the transmission took a shit. My current GLC gets serviced at 20,000 Km and I am confident it will live for quite a while.

I would just wait till the heat is on till i take off. You will be ensured your car is definitely warm and ready to go.
6,000 km, maybe 8,000 km if most is highway mileage. Also, as I live in a place with 100 degree summer and -30 winter, I change every 6 months even if I haven’t hit 6,000 km. Oil is cheap, and I can easily do it myself. Necessary? Maybe not. Does it ensure the engine is in the best possible condition? Yep.
No dip stick on newer BMWs. My BMW M5 states 5000 miles between oil changes.

What's a kilometer? Where and what is that oil you keep referring to? I just drive it till it stops then call a rollback to take it in for warranty.
That's why you call a tow truck. Maintain your vehicle so you don't have to call tow trucks and have a long lasting vehicle.

I’ve driven a Mercedes GLS450 suv. I noticed that when you turn it off, there sounds like stuff is still running under the hood. Is any of that to cool the turbos? I’m wondering why the shutdown isn’t automated.

Modern oils do last longer, but I personally wouldn't push it past 8000 miles in normal driving conditions. 15000 miles are fine if it's only highway miles.
oil is cheap, engines are not.
The thing about these extended oil services is that they will hold up on paper in case of a class action lawsuit but "on paper" means under ideal conditions assuming moderate weather and use cycles.
One thing is for sure. If the book says change the oil every 20k then changing it at 5k is not going to hurt it and changing the oil yourself will easily save you enough money to justify more frequent oil changes.
Mobil Synthetics are now all marketed as “extended service.”
@@Support_Ad_Blocker Buy that and treat it like a regular synthetic with 5000km intervals and you'll probably never get sludge...other than that I see no benefit to the end user.
@@funfun5656 Yeah I called my repair shop and they said it's marketed that way because the push is on to extend oil change intervals. Plus, people are just lazy. I actually change mine every 3-3.5K miles because it doesn't get driven very much and I don't want to leave the same oil in the motor for more than a few months.
@@Support_Ad_Blocker I'm just a firm believer in getting under the car a checking stuff out regularly as it is and if you're already going to be under the car it only takes you 5 more minutes to wait for the oil to drain anyways.
You'd be surprised how often I find something cheap like a shaky bearing that is cheap to fix and will save you thousands having to overhaul your suspension overtime.
My Lexus Gx460 just hit 18k and it been change oil 4th time now. Oil is cheap engine aren’t.

I'm gonna add another, and maybe sounds controversial.
- Driving very short distances with a lot of stop and go.
Little backstory: Used cars I bought had crazy amount of carbon buildup at the valves and the cylinder. Obviously the car came from someone who drove 2-3 miles back and forth. The engine never fully reaches operating temperature, or if it does, it's very short and the incomplete burn of the fuel leaves a whole lot more deposits . Think of when you choke down your fire and it's smoking more than ever. Also kills the catalityc converter later on.
First signs: it: rough start, rough idle, poor fuel economy. There is no quick fix, unless doing a walnut blasting, but that can be expensive and you may not need to.
I used cleaner solvents before - the best way to use them is to add it over and over, multiple fill ups, not just one!
Second: Drive it longer, do longer trips with it for a while.
I drive 50 minutes to work with a good 65-75mph throughout the trip and just 2 weeks after I bought my used car, I noticed my fuel economy improved and the car got a much better idle than before. "Italian tune-up ? Not really, your car likes continuous and steady trips, with optimal temperature gets you an optimal burn and starts to burn away the carbon deposits the same time.
Combined with genuine engine cleaner and you will notice a much better peformance after like 300 miles.
I do the engine cleaner routine every other year, no need to get carried away.
Now you see, that's why "highway miles" are better when buying a used car, than someone's grocery shopper, that never gone more than 40mph and only for 5 minutes. I recommend electric cars for those people.
