The problem with this is when you need to service the car that needs access to the Frunk, removing the Frunk tray will require to remove the light which is a pain and risk ripping out the wires! The ones sold online are plug and play. So for $30 will save you 30mins to an hr, and when you need to to remove the Frunk tray just disconnect the plug no need to remove the light strip. For $30 more save 30mins and the trouble and no risk of damaging your wire if Tesla service just yank up the Frunk tray!
Ild love for them to add inverter that runs from the battery bank, not the 12v battery. I know can do camp mode, which switches drawing voltage from the pack, but be handy to have access at any time. Especially for the Model Y as make it just more amazing camping car.
I really enjoy watching your DIY videos. Not that I would do them myself, at least not all of them. Maybe once my car is out of warranty I might feel a bit easier about approaching it with pry bar, blow torch, and welder 😂. Great video and very cool mod!
Nice one. Very clean install, too. My only variation would be to use a heat gun on those heat shrink solder joints. I've been thinking about doing one of these mods and I actually prefer your way of doing this to the harness adapters that others use. With those, there seems to be too much wiring left to try and tuck away. Again, this looks like a great mod. After changing the spring on my frunk to one with less tension, I've ruled out the need for a power frunk just now, but very much want a power trunk upgrade on my 2018 M3 LR AWD now that the factory rear harness recall has been completed on mine. Cheers.
Even though my kit came with the choice of three short adaptor leads, none of the three bolts adjacent to the switch on my January 2020 Model 3 went to ground. The solution was to do what you did and join the ground wire to the Tesla's black wire that went to the existing light.
Rather than relying on colors, maybe the hint is the pin positions on the connector? Aside from that, the question that comes to mind immediately for me is how much current can the upstream switching element supply on the wire that's used to power the existing lighting? Adding all those LED's is going to be a substantial increase over the "stock" load. On the other hand, there's no anguished screaming from people doing mods like this who've blown-up the body controller that drives the frunk light, so it must be OK. Or close enough.
Nice BUT…I would rather pay the higher fee from a reputable(key word) aftermarket dealer THAN CUT ANY PART OF A FACTORY HARNESS. I just would prefer a plug and play install that can be removed when I trade in the vehicle.
This was great, I have no issue cutting wires but time wise I may opt for the plug and play model. this is a solution to a problem I wasn't aware I had since I never think us using the frunk and I check the one on my Boxster yearly, mainly out of curiosity. keep up the great videos thanks
Unfortunately the led lights used are extremely low quality. For many of you they won’t make it through the installation. The installation instructions are dead on. Look on Amazon get the neon strips that come with a 12 volt power supply. They are just shy of $30. The wire connections are much much more durable and should last the life of the car. Yes you pay twice as much and you don’t need the power supply. The $15 neons he is using have an insane fail rate.
How about lighting the dark rear space of a model Y? They all come with a cover that’s great, but it is dark underneath. I routinely must use m phone flashlight.
After disconnecting the 12 volt battery did you get a code? Because the system would sense no 12 volt power and assume the battery went bad. I don't like that the lights stay on for 10 minutes after the frunk is closed, seems excessive and a waste of power. But honestly, I don't think the frunk needs more light, it's not that big of a space.
Great Video FTG! Waiting for our MY here in a month. Do you know if the install is similar? I will go ahead and order as it's so cheap. Love these DIY videos. Have you heard of THE ORIGINAL RETRACTABLE SHADE™? A MY we rented had it and it's pretty cool! Very compact and covers whole windshield. Wondering if you want to check it out!
It's a little different but you should be able to figure out how to pop the front panel off. The wire colors will probably be different but if you determine which is positive and negative it should be a piece of cake! I've never heard of the retractable shade but I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks for the tip and good luck with your delivery!
Thanks! So excited to finally join the Tesla community after a year waiting for delivery. By the way my wife and I are going to try out some of your road trips! Can't wait.
Hello, is that foam/insulation around your locking mechanism something you added or was that OEM? I recently installed a powered frunk on my Model Y and it is noticeably loud.
Watched and purchased this in 2022 and now 2024 just now installing it and had to go back and find your video.

Definitely a frugal mod to make for either Model 3 or Model Y and that's what this channel is all about. Thank you.
The only mod I really want to add is a powered frunk. And a li-ion 12V battery. Eventually.

I thoroughly enjoyed this budget minded (frugal) installation!

Thanks for this, Mark! Very useful and a good look, as well.
My kind of DIY guy. Lights ordered.
Seems like this would be really nice in the model 3 rear trunk too. It like a dark pit in my car!
They make a light bar that works well
@@TongueJedi Where?
@@chezchezchezchez Evannex, Amazon, rpmtesla. They all sell PnP light bars
Thank you so much brought mines the other day installed it wow what a big difference. Must needed mod
Very informative and great attention to details. Thank you.

Got a link to the kit that doesn't require splicing wires?

Did you ever get the plug n play frunk light? If so which one you go with & do you like it?
Nice video..but did you forget to mention to connect the 12v back up for testing?
Sound is fine for me.
You can buy a motion sensor on Amazon for it. I believe it stays on with the car until you shut off the car otherwise.
Thank you for the UK!

The newer Tesla’s now use a 16 volt battery will that extra voltage destroy the light strip?

I don’t have the automatic trunk. Was that an aftermarket job?
This is very cool! Do you have a way to do this in the trunk?
What's the Tesla wire size for the frunk light? Is it 20AWG? Thank you
When do you connect the 12V battery back on?
I have a performance model y and I see a yellow, gray and purple wire. I can’t seem to get th right config. Any ideas?

$20 one for the trunk too? Thanks!

So slow on everything but i still dont know how you spliced it.
I did this but the light quit working. Any suggestions? Resistor? Fuse?
As much as I hate to say it , it might be a bad light strip.
Why do you havebto disconnect the 12 vlt?
When cutting wires it’s best to disconnect the 12 volt battery to prevent power surges that could damage it.
No sound
