90% of my pressing is Spoto Presses, even when overloading. If you watch any of my videos you will see that most of my pressing is made up of Spoto presses. It actually builds in a natural slingshot. I have never had a problem with pausing or touching my chest in competitions. Constant tension is the key!
Should i use this method instead of a regular bench press? And did you get any pain from applying this method and were you forced to drop the amount of weight you use?
I feel like I stepped into a time machine watching this video. At last the Smelly One has come back to Supertraining06 - rock voice, with an old school tutorial video. I legit miss you Mark. Please bring back more of this great content that changed my life in the gym. Thanks 🙏🏼
Confused. It looks like doing half reps without a pause so makes them easier than normal reps. I thought to increase tension over time and off the chest you pause near chest and don’t lockout and control the weight down, you have to use less weight. These reps looks like I can heavy up the weight and do half reps: no lockout and no chest touch.
Genuine question i thought the weight was supposed to be paused for 1-2 seconds which it wasn't in the demo and again the weight wasn't paused or locked out with the lighter weight demo is that correct ?......asking for a friend :-)
Spotto press compared to half reps are a huge difference! Half reps are for people who think they can press ALL that weight, but in reality if the bar goes to the chest… NO reps will be completed! Thx for the video Mr. Bell
I've done the spoto press before even knowing what it was, that's just how I've always benched lol. I feel it in my pecs much more than a regular bench.
Always swore against not touching my chest with the bar, even without a pause still give a quick tap to the chest without a bounce. But maybe I'll switch to try the Spoto press when I hit my next plateau.
I've found it is definitely more beneficial for guys with long arms to stop short of full depth. If you're built like an orangutan, going to the chest is not helpful all the time! Especially on hypertrophy days
didn't know there was a name for this. I thought I was just doing how a benchpress is suppose to be. When the weight is light enough, the bar stop short of touching the chest....(due to my anatomy length of arms etc.) because my scapula is full squeezed and all the muscles are at its maximal stretch position. But when the weight is heavier, it will bite pass that maximal stretch point and the bar will touch the chest.
I do 90% spoto presses to keep the constant tension. I do complete lockout or 95% range of motion. It has worked great for this old man in my competitions.
ua-cam.com/video/c-yPx9PgeHo/v-deo.html I suggest checking that vid out. Around 6:13 - 6:15 mark, Brian gives a tip on how to unrack without a liftoff.
do the self unrack where you lift your butt off the bench first and plant it once you have the bar in your hands. don't listen to guy above who says stick with a weight where you can do 12 reps+, you'll never get stronger that way
Transitioning into this more and more after watching kirill sarychev move his 300kg and utilising control through the negative and building actual strength
Nick Starkey The moment I met Eric I was instantly attracted to his energy and outlook on life. We grew to be pretty good friends. He led me through many aspects in life as I saw him as a father figure. But in memory of his name he passed away about 6 months ago.....He was hammering you moms cheeks when he converted to the afterlife.........
@Deangelo Brooks no, if you keep your elbows in it takes the pressure out of your shoulders and puts it on the lats and triceps. I do weekly workouts with a heavy day and a volume day. Have been doing it for years. I am in my mid 50s no shoulder problems.
The risk is smaller if you keep your elbows in the correct position and use a narrow grip. I am in my mid 50's and do 90% spoto presses even when I am overloading in the mid 600s. I am an old man even and my shoulders are fine.
What do you think of Dr. Joel Seedman’s position on 90degree angles being optimal? I think that’s about what the Spoto Press is, though he would argue for pausing it off the chest. It’s something I plan to start trying next Bench workout and it’s encouraging that this is exclusively how Eric was benching which I hadn’t known. Great video as always!
The benefits for Spoto are far different than any of the reasoning that Seedman uses, who is a straight up con artist. Train your body in a full range when you can. Spoto is for teaching your body how to stay tight on the descent and create power

Mark really just stood for 3 minutes giving a detailed intro with a hip circle on the whole time 😂😂😂

Commentary vids and strength focused instructional videos? It's the glory days!
Where is eric spoto #whereisericspoto
Seth Muse he stopped benching due to some serious shoulder injury.
R.i.p
Coming back to this video because spoto press is on my training program. Thanks mark.
Happy to see the new/old school videos!
"keep in mind that Eric spoto did not use this like a tool"
But Mark would probably say a lot of us use this like we're tools 😭

Same man, he sad that you need to pause for a second and he smashed milion fast reps, i don't get it
@@fswarrior9510 yeah I was confused on that as well
*Let me just show you the lighter weight so you really get the picture. Let's just get two plates on there real quick*

Please don't give these new lifters dumb ideas they need a hip circle to bench press 🤣🤣🤣🤣
How dopey
Try paused spoto if you wanna really feel if your tight enough !
so true
I'm about to go to the gym for chest day after watching this, I think i'll give this a shot, hip circle and all!
Should the negatives be done as fast as mark was doing? Seemed a little momentumy. Lmk
thats the point, rather than keeping the momentum low and letting your chest stop a bit. Probably keep this to lower than your 1 rep max

How is Eric, has anyone seen him? I know he's had some shoulder problems. Is he still lifting/ armwrestling over in Vegas? Stan may know?
Very interesting history about this movement. Thank you.
Mark, what percent of your 1RM should you use the spotto press with? And what rep range?
Genuine question i thought the weight was supposed to be paused for 1-2 seconds which it wasn't in the demo and again the weight wasn't paused or locked out with the lighter weight demo is that correct ?......asking for a friend :-)
At 5:18, let me show you with light weights. And that's 2 plates
Over 100 lbs lighter though makes sense

Anybody know how to help with a cramp in hip when pushing knees outward during bench

Do you always execute the reps as fast as possible? Or can you do different tempos?
That’s what I was wondering tbh
So a spoto press is stopping an inch from your chest and pushing to three quarters?
I do mine stop 1 inch from chest full extension.
what's the max you ever benched raw?
I believe his best in comp was 574.
2:36 Pretty sure she's pissing in the water. You guys have really upped your shenaniganry. God bless
Aric Q 😂😂😂💀💀
How did you even notice that?! hahahah
You invented the Spoto press, but Eric Spoto invented it. I see.
I will have to try this tonite
So the spoto is not all the way ? Either way, looking good man!
Some one clarify this movement. Stop before touching your chest, no lock out and many reps = spoto press?
Yes according to his explanation.
But basically spoto is stop before chest. Now it depends on you to Lock out or not.
I do 90% spoto presses to keep the constant tension. I do complete lockout or 95% range of motion. It has worked great for this old man in my competitions.
Jeje love that beef against the las video of Scot Mendelson😂😂
Can someone give me tips to do a self-liftoff for someone who's 5'2? Unracking on my own is tough when I get to 135lbs
ua-cam.com/video/c-yPx9PgeHo/v-deo.html
I suggest checking that vid out. Around 6:13 - 6:15 mark, Brian gives a tip on how to unrack without a liftoff.
Get a lift off or do lighter weight if by yourself
Adjust where you are lying. When I unrack myself I lay farther up on the bench. When someone else is unracking it I slide down slightly.
Use a weight you can get 12 reps from so it's not as hard to unrack.
do the self unrack where you lift your butt off the bench first and plant it once you have the bar in your hands. don't listen to guy above who says stick with a weight where you can do 12 reps+, you'll never get stronger that way
I have unintentionally done that a bunch of times
Mark the type of guy to make a video just to repeat how he coined the "spoto press". 🤣
Should you lock out the weight or no?
Not on a spoto press
@@grizzlymanverneteil4443 ok so you just say within the middle of the range of motion
@@KenshinU323 that's the way it appears to be performed. I've never done them myself.

Wheres this gym located?
I think Sacramento, CA
When I do a Spoto I hold it for a 5 count to add tension. Is that counter productive?
Christopher Goins not smart
3 second count is plenty imo

Casually presses 225 for 28. Thank you mark!!
I thought the Spoto press was to lower the bar about 1" above your chest and hold for 3-5 seconds then press..

I learned about this from Nick Wright. Had to come and find out what in the world a Spoto Press was....lol
Bring it one step further spoto larsen press 😂

or to a fkd up shoulders. i hate extreme stress at the bottom position, its a bad risk
i press like that to avoid the shoulder strain at the bottom; the idea is to keep tension on the pecs
@Deangelo Brooks no, if you keep your elbows in it takes the pressure out of your shoulders and puts it on the lats and triceps. I do weekly workouts with a heavy day and a volume day. Have been doing it for years. I am in my mid 50s no shoulder problems.

Why does Mark do that stupid snorting thing at the beginning of his videos?
Almost 5 minutes into a six and half video before he shows the press.

the only thing I do differently is that I try to pause it above my chest
Ya same here..could of sworn that's what i saw on one of these videos..
"Spoto Press," I was doing this in the 90s
Omg Mark should get his BP checked asap. After that burn out set with 225 he was purple. That's not normal. Yikes.
It's normal if he has low blood pressure? Or high?
