  • This week, we’re going to be focusing on motivation. Sometimes, even when we know that we need to change, finding the motivation to make positive changes in our lives can be a challenge. In this session with Al, we delve into how to spot the signs of a jacked-up nervous system, the dangers of over-committing and how to make habits stick.
Alex Howard is a London-based Therapeutic Coach dedicated to helping break the stigma around mental health and helping people make real, positive changes in their lives. Alex is also the creator of Therapeutic Coaching and founder of The Optimum Health Clinic and Conscious Life.

What helps me with motivation( as you asked!) is reminding myself of the bigger picture of WHY I want to do ‘x’ habit/ tool/ change…what am I ultimately seeking here, that is a better situation than what I am living with or upset with now? And I remind myself that I have to take frequent steps to do so, and that no one else can do it for me. If I want things to change, I have to take regular steps to do so. This was a helpful episode in exploring various obstacles that so many people encounter.

I think it could be worth trying to combine social activity with exercise, such as a team sport. Great motivation and lots of fun! Thanks for uploading, Alex, I am really enjoying your therapy sessions.

"There is nothing more motivating than 'noticing a difference'" - so true! I have battled with the motivation issue around exercise for so long but when I retired I chose to focus on it deliberately and this started to happen - lost weight, felt fitter, less stressed. And when other people started commenting on me looking good for it that was an even bigger boost. Once you 'notice the difference' in how you feel yourself it makes staying committed so much easier. When we are in the grip of anxiety/depression it's so easy to find 'reasons' that are really just excuses fostered by the anxiety

What helps me is planning out the action I need to take beforehand and then ticking it off. I’m a list person and the achievement of doing and ticking off is satisfying for me. If it’s not planned it doesn’t happen. 😊

33:30 - I'm also pretty disciplined but I ran into hard times regardless. The struggling is rough but they lead ultimately to growth. The key is to get out of your own way.

Has he thought about the possibility of his sicknesses breing connected to anxiety? Because often if we ignore our traumas etc they show up as sicknesses. I wonder if that has been talked about.

I just really see myself sitting there. I seem to have quite similar issues in all the areas touched upon. I don't go out in the evenings for distraction. But self-care is still in the category of boring and at the same time overwhelming. So I don't do it despite being a disciplined person otherwise.

This reminds me of the Hugh Grant movie "About a boy." I think it's called.

Thanks so much Al, for sharing your story xoxxo
Also, just a thought, have you considered that the not being able to be consistent with homework is Adhd related. Also, I find it hard to journal everyday too, and I think this is my autistic brain related in that I don't think linearly to be able to write it down and doing so is a lot of extra work so is hard to be consistent about. I need that linear functioning power for keeping my life afloat with other things.

I'm also terrible with motivating myself. Ofc, having CFS/M.E AMD feeling constantly exhausted, is a real motivation crusher. Ha! *But* what get me to say 'f*k it, imma gonna do it anyway, even though I don't feel like it," is reminding myself why I'm doing it. What the end result will be if I keep doing what needs to be done. And asking myself, "Hiw much longer do I want to live like this?" Ie..Not living life as fulfilling as it could be, if I was well-er. Already so many years gone feeling this way, so just: *Do it, and get the feelings later*
This helped with both my MH when I was healing from depression, and this all helps me now in my healing from CFS/M.E.

I strongly recommend you buy Quies pure wax earplugs They changed my life. Failing those even Boots wax earplugs are really very, very good too. Worth a try I promise and may be part of the solution...?

I have messaged you? I don't understand why you don't talk about MS as well? This is the most common neurological disease and the fatigue is overwhelming with chronic pain 😢

the back ache could be the adrenals impacting - my son sees a chiropracter and he has drawn attention to NOT going to the gym or yoga but having specific exercises for loosening up the back....caution as yoga can be bad. Pilates is better but is the back issue the aching adrenals.....??

Maybe need to explore the alcohol and drugs a bit more. People notoriously underestimate and divulge how much they really use.
