Definitely worth cleaning and changing. If you’re not seeing good flow in the tank, I’d be looking at the water pump condition. I would have also removed the heater hoses from the block and blown them out to ensure you didn’t have a blockage or crap in them which will find its way to your new core.
Those are all good suggestions. The water pump was first to my mind then I thought I just did that. Then remembered that was 5 years ago. I am suspicious of the lower radiator hose too. It’s been on the truck since I got it. I suppose it’s all due for a flush. I was just trying to get it done without emptying the radiator over the weekend. So that part was a success. But we will be diving back in as it warms up in the spring
Yea. Guy can get spoiled working in junk like this. But seriously… best heater design I have ever worked on. It was all the others that kept me dreading getting into this and it wa s a breeze. I did the k5 this summer because it was leaky and I still have a cramp and ptsd
Something i have always done on mine. is to get a piece of Stainless-steel door/ window screen, cut to size and silicone to the firewall where the air comes into the airbox. the box cover covers it up so you can't see it. and it will keep the leaves/ varmints out. you can also do this to the underside of the cowl piece itself for improved results. if you want every last bit of air to go thru the core you can also put a strip of camper tape/ foam welt around the bottom of the core to seal it to the bottom pan piece. Thanks for showing the difference in temps with the thermometer. cool to see that.
Silicone spray in the heater box..... You may notice crap all over your windscreen and possibly everything else in the cab. That won't completely go away this winter. That time takes into consideration I live in the western great lakes. Our winters are a bit longer than Georgia's.
I wiped it out pretty well, I am not seeing any residue and I dont have any strange smells, thought it might not have been the brightest idea after I did it... but wanted to do a little lubierustproofing... anyway i think i dodged the bullet i tried to fire into my own foot this time.
I had a 1963 chvy short wide when I lived in Longview Texas . I had took my 400 HP 327c.i. out of my 67 camaro w/ turbo400 and the 4.10 gears . Drove it from Texas to Colorado then to California . The trip to California was during the winter and during a blizzard from Colorado Springs . About froze , heheheh Hardly any heat . @@betweenthesharksgarage
right.... you try to be prepared, so you order the parts before you dive in cause who has time to have the car apart... then the problem seems to be leaves... then what are you gonna do... some times new parts are iffy... but it took me this long to get into it while i froze commuting for a month... either way the new part isnt leaky yet and it is warmer in there...i ll take it as a win
@@betweenthesharksgarage win for sure. I went an entire winter with no head in my old wrangler. Looked behind the dash and saw burnt wires so I closed it up and just figured it was toast. Spring came around and I taped up wires and replaced a $10 switch. - that winter I actually ordered and installed heated seats to get by lol.

Got new part… realize old parts unplugged. Or in your case… filled with leaves haha
