Milford Track, the finest walk in the world, Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

It's really hard to book the Milford Track during the Great Walk season, so we walked the track in May after the Great Walk season and before the avalanche risk is too high to walk.
Day 1: Te Anau Downs - Mintaro Hut
Day 2: Mintaro Hut - Dumpling Hut
Day 3: Dumpling Hut - Sandfly Point

Thanks Aaron, great memories, freedom walked with my two younger cousins in 1982. Met some great people from all over the world. Maybe they gravitated to me because I took two bottles of whiskey to share on the evening chats.

I understand the huts aren't bookable and are first come first served. But do you need to buy the hut tickets the day you start the track or a day before? It would be great help for this info thank you!

Yes, you need to buy the backcountry hut tickets before you walk the track. Noting that generally it is busy the first week after great walk season. So it's good to book the transport as early as you can. The transport service provider will tell you if it is fully booked or not. They are responsible to make sure huts will not overflow and will tell you if there are already too many people.

No, no river crossing was required for us when we walked it.

@@CrusherAU I walked it in mid May which is off season. It was not difficult when we walked it. Only some snow at the pass, and it was not flooded. If you want to walk it in min October, I guess it would be ok if it is not too wet. You could call doc before you walk it to double check the weather, track condition and if the bridges have been in place. If everything is ok, some fitness training prior to the walk will nail it.

@@CrusherAU All the bridges were in place. But some of them is removed after King’s birthday and will be in place again before the next Great Walk season. So it is important to double check with doc if the bridges have been in place.
