I’ve got to say thanks to my viewers for pointing out that the “herm” and “C” connections on the capacitor had been wired backwards. I went back and wired it correctly, and the fan started rotating in the correct direction. Plus, an additional thanks from the homeowner.
That's the reply I was waiting for. Good job from a fellow tech.

One of you UA-cam creators said you can reverse wires on the compressor somehow to it to briefly rotate the opposite direction if it's seized to try and free it up.
@@natepeterson7145 on three phase compressors the rotation can be changed by changing an incoming wire. This will change the phase rotation forcing it to move backwards. This is dangerous for the compressors function but it iis a way to get them a day out of it. If the compressors can't be done same day this is a way to get them through a day for the time being.
Did that also fix your pressures? You had mentioned it might have wrong refrigerant in it but fan moving backwards would effect the pressures. Thanks love the videos I am learning a lot. You also may be able to help determine what refrigerant is in it by hooking up a gauge after unit has not run all night and check the P/T charts checking ambient temp compared to pressure.

Always loved your honesty & professionalism to your customers and i also really dig how youre always problem solving the situation to find a solution and have your customer happy at the end of the day unlike the other techs that dont even try, or show effort to fix the problem they just hit them with the "youre going to need a new system" i mean i get it commission percentages are good as a salesman, but cmon man dont be greedy and throw your customers in the grinder. Im going to hvac school here in Texas, have my universal epa, and only have 5 more months for graduation. this is exactly the stuff they told us to watch out for when we get out in the field and its going to happen alot. Im also an apprentice at the moment me and my boss went out to an inspection call to a mans house because they told him the exact same thing i got up in the attic the indoor unit was laying on its side, the drainage pipe was slanted up not down to properly drain, no shurtape on his ducting i can go on and on but it was just poor installation and neglegance. This video helped out alot sir thank you! As iam in module 250a and this is what im dealing with the electrical side keep the videos coming my guy! God bless!
I’ve noticed a lot of guys just want to “sell a new system”. Why would I want to buy a new system when mine has lasted nearly 30 years now with very little issue beside a dead motor? I ask how long your “new system” will last me.. I get an answer of 10-15 years. No way in hell am I doing that. Don’t even try. 😂
Nice that you sorted that whole thing out. Great to learn what it takes to reverse the motor. Who would swap the wires on that capacitor and screw up the other wires and then leave? Criminal. I had a guy come out from the nearest large HVAC company with lots of advertising and was told I needed a new valve or an entire new indoor coil with the valve or a whole new system. He had none in stock for months. I called a second place recommended by a friend. Tech came out and immediately determined that my system had a leak at the outdoor coil connection and was nearly empty. He found the leak, soldered it, filled the system and had me going in an hour. No new parts needed other than the solder and coolant. It is just sad how many scammers are out there.
Probably not a scammer, you got the "fuck off" quote instead. They didn't want the job, so they gave you a huge bill of sale with a lead time of months to discourage you from hiring them.
Different schools of thought is all it is. You can dump money into an old inefficient shit box or you can replace with a higher efficiency unit that has 10 year warranty. Initial cost vs long term cost to own. Anyone can come out and fix your shitter year after year doesn’t mean it’s the best option for you in the long term

@@DirtyLifeLove as a tech you can’t control the socioeconomic state of the country/world all you can do is work with what you’re given and do the best for the customer you have in front of you. If you have 93 year old widow who just needs to get through a couple more summers or the customer is moving to a new home next year then do whatever you can to get them through but for the average customer helping them understand that these systems aren’t built to last forever and at a certain point you are wasting your money to have it repaired when you could put in something that will save on energy costs and comes with warranties. “Just fix it” guys are just as guilty of wasting the customers money as the guys who try to sell a new system on every call. Got to treat each call and each customer as a unique situation and help them figure out what makes the most sense for them. Or you can start your own manufacturing company and build something that will last forever… good luck

Great video as always. However, it was very painful to watch you strip the thermostat wire at the condenser. I would recommend getting a regular/cheap set of wire strippers. There is a technique to stripping wire, even when there's not a small enough hole on these cheaper strippers. Get the strippers on the smallest setting around the wire, rotate them to a 45 degree angle perpendicular to the wire and pull. "Ideal Ergonomic" is a decent set. You have great troubleshooting skills and I appreciate the videos. Keep them coming!

Just swap the wires at the capacitor for the fan I’d had couple guys put them backwards and causes the fan to rotate backwards

I so want to show you how to strip a wire either with a proper tool or a knife. That was driving me nuts.
Side cutters work real good for most anything.

He is the one making videos and needs to know this stuff so that in the future, he can do better or just cut this part out of the video of him stripping wire. It was in fact very painful to watch. Its like when mechanic youtubers have to hold the camera in one hand and videotape every spark plug coming out and going back in. Just knock it off, we don't need to see every plug come out. Flip the fan motor leads on contactor. Sometimes it makes motor reverse
Just for future reference and anybody that wants to know, don't put your finger on the lead when measuring with a multi-meter on low voltage it can give you false or inaccurate readings. Most of the time it does not matter but if you're trying to diagnose a low voltage short you can be working against yourself if you do that. I'm glad to see you saved your customer money instead of trying to make a profit.
yeah.. i used to do some electric work long time ago, and i was one of thous people who has to make the cables run straight, even if they are inside the wall and no one sees them... seeing how HVAC guys just leave the cables hanging in mid air, just hurts my soul... just use a cable tie or even a small piece of duct tape, to route the cables nicely... also there was nut connection hanging in midair, which is kinda bad :/

It’s much the same here in the U.K., where people are advised to replace rather than repair. I’m not sure if it’s because we are now a 'throw away' culture and people no longer have the skills or whether people are plain dishonest. Very few domestic buildings have HVAC systems here as it tends to be commercial buildings that have air conditioning. However, when your summer tends to last only the third Tuesday and Wednesday in June there’s not much call for it. Have you any idea how much you’ve saved this lady?
Just went out to a call. The other Company stated she needed a new system . 9k . When in fact it was a Clogged Condenser Coil and just a tad low on refrigerant 410A . The system is only 4 years of age .
9K? I just had mine replaced, Evap. & outside unit (3 ton) plus T/stat 3 years ago for $2,700. It must be Bidenomics at work.

Klein Tools 1003 Wire Stripper and Cutter
I used these (or ones similar) for 50 years to strip control wires. Use a few times, get tto understand how the tool talks to you, and become a wire stripping machine. I still use them around the house and on the vehicles. Available with "keep open" spring for a few bucks more.

These AC manufacturers are building cheap AC units that break down and repair contractors are upselling a new system instead of repairing.

I’m in Texas A#1 air went to a customers how’s sold them a new R22 air handler the year prior and the year I went to them they needed to replace the entire system to 410a at 10.000- The system was wired so in heat or cooling the heat pump would come on. I change the wire that they obviously miss wired to sell a system and cleaned the condenser coil. Evaporator was fine. The system was 25 years old this was 3 years ago it’s still running today with no problems. Yes it not efficient as a new one would be however they are on SS and not able to replace right now.
It’s amazing when you have tech on commission that will do anything to sell a new system, be honest with the customer and let them make the choice. Best practice. Yes in the long run they may have much higher utility bills but if they have to be given the information they need to make a choice based on their financial situation.
Carry a lighter for those really small wires. Heat the insulation for about 3 seconds then pull the insulation off with your fingers. Thats what I do. Sometimes I have to use my finger nails for a little extra grip but it works

Love your videos. But sad to see how let's say hard it was for you to strip those wire. Even with fancy tool, you should have been able to strip, and without the unnecessary use of the knife.
Those Klein wire strippers aren't the greatest. I just use my fingernails to strip thermostat wires.

Diagonal cutters were used by MANY old school techs for that reason. I saw you pull out a pair out of your bag. I would have reached for them before a utility knife, but everyone has their own technique.
I was told the same thing by an "HVAC Pro" in our Area... He inherited the Company from Daddy. Told me that my new compressor was junk. System needed refrigerant. Fortunately, I have nephew who *is* a pro; he sorted me out.

I have several neighbors that do A/C systems, and it seems to me like every call they get to go work on peoples systems they end up replacing every unit they service. I believe you are one of the last honest contractors out there!
I think he is too our old unit at or store we own business it had a wiring issue right away they tore the unit apart and said it needs to be replaced it will be 8,000 have a nice day. I found another tech that came out and was able to put the unit back together and repair the original problem. It's been cooling perfectly since. I know the system is 20 years old but doesn't need to be changed.

It's not always about not being honest. A good salesman will up sale new systems when they can. They're not lying to anyone, they just go through their presentation and explain how much better a new system is and can be. Most people have no idea how an A/C works or how much better a variable speed Trane XV20i with an IAQ package is than a Goodman 14 seer builders grade unit. If you're in the HVAC residential market you need to be trained on how to sale. It doesn't mean be dishonest, it just means you need to know how to read your customer and know when to put on the technicians hat and take off the salesman's hat when you realize they just want it fixed and dont want an upgrade. There are levels to this and you can be strickly a repairman if you want or you can be all of it. Some guys have no clue how to sale or run calls that selling isnt an option.
Thermostat wire is less than 18AWG and you should have wire strippers with all the gauges or an automatic wire stripper never the incorrect tool or you nick the wire and weaken it.

yea, I have an issue with the t-stat wire being to small as well. I found that if you pull at an angle, you can generally get it. not always though....
That was a crazy one!
I had one in Florida install a new system because he said it needed replacing. The one he installed leaked constantly - multiple fills, done by him. Then, he said it needed another new unit again. "Fired" him at that point.
That’s a well thought out utility room, NOT! Heaven help you when you have to do a change out. Nice work.

My sister was told to replace her HVAC unit after a close lightning strike, and almost paid $2,000! (back in the 90's) But a honest installer came by to give a second estimate, and replaced a bad capacitor, and it started running normally for less than $150.
My very first service call, the homeowner reported a couple of service techs said "You need a larger circuit breaker" or some other lame reason. The compressor was shorted to ground, but still running, so I replaced the compressor. It was not a total short to ground, but something like 30,000 ohms to ground. That was in March of 1984.
It seems like 30-40 years ago that the air conditioner technicians would trouble shoot the various problems before condemning any major parts, of course they would charge for their time they would run diagnostics until they found and repaired the problems after discussing how much the repair would cost, today it seems that they would rather sell a person a brand new unit worth thousands of dollars?
Agreed...in business, you have to give a little as you take a little. A basic charge should include at least finding one problem and then go from there with any added labor if more than one issue exists. I have seen techs get to a job and have the fix in 10 minutes and get paid very well for that. Those types of repairs help pay for the ones that might take an hour to diagnose without any added labor to the customer.

I always just lay my hat on the top of condenser. If it doesn't elevate it's either dirty coil or wrong direction. You'll know which one immediately. I had a trane oem fan running backwards due to a bad run cap.
A co worker thought I was pulling his leg when I told him his sister's condenser fan was running backwards.

The little blue kline wire strippers will save you a lot of time. Really wondering why you showed any voltage on all the other wires.
Not having the breakers labeled would drive me nuts if I owned that house. Glad you found the broken wire and got the system running.
Between that and the rat nest of patched wires in the head unit. I take pride in how my cabling is neat, clean and well labeled.
Just about every idiot contractor and their electricians building homes prior to 1980 left them unmarked. Probably because they didn't know themselves which was what. All very stupid.
Anytime I see odd voltage like 9, 11, 15 on stray or out of use conductors I always begin looking for a shunted situation like you found tucked up in the wall there.
Please leave a Sharpie note at the Condenser telling Where that circuit breaker is. (That you just spent 30 minutes trying to find.)

One of my very first, or possibly the very first 'on my own' service calls I was sent on was a unit that was recently installed by the owner. Lo and behold, the condensing unit fan motor was blowing downwards. He absolutely did not believe me initially. I told him it's either the wrong fan blade or the wrong motor. We traced the wiring. It was correct. Even I could read a schematic, not my first day doing refrigeration . It was the wrong motor and I have no idea how that happened. How that can even happen. Brand new Rheem unit. Never saw that again.
However, I had walked into a nightmare of service calls. Apparently the owner didn't understand much about what he was doing. In my second day we installed a unitary/central Rheem heat pump, and I was charging the system, and he walked into the scene and asked me what are you doing, why do you have that tank upside down?
Oh my God. Are you kidding? Really?
That's what I was thinking.
He didn't understand the tertiary blend of r410a. And he had had NUMEROUS PROBLEMS with his installs, that were an absolute mystery to him. To the point of having factory reps come out and examine his jobs, even replacing entire condensing units at times.
He didn't know what he didn't know. So he couldn't even admit to it. Until that very day. I walked in thinking he knew everything. Boy, was I mistaken. We spent a lot of money on refrigerant in the coming months, evacuating and recharging,correctly, many heat pumps.
After that, everybody was getting far better performance from the recently installed systems they had paid for, but were unhappy with. Go figure..
I always start at the inside unit and by the time you get outside you already know the color of wires you should have outside. Also more often then not the breaker is by the meter…..
I think you need a better wire stripping method.
You can learn what type of refrigerant they have if you just bust out your PT chart lol ,well if it ain't a 110 outside read your chart if it's 70 degrees just read your psi and base it off of that, probably 410 A

Gotta love those Big name companies and their techs that are paid on commission! Had a lady referred to me the other day with a sluggish drains issue. Said Roto Rooter came out and unscrewed the clean out off and the the sewage drain out basically relieving the pressure off the drain lines, didn’t run a machine or a camera and was there all of 15 minutes and charged her $1060.00 bucks! For unscrewing a cap and telling her to use cheap toilet paper! I went out and ran a short cable down the line to the entrance of the tank and their was no blockage, installed a sewer popper eliminated the cap portion and gave her the number to my septic guy. I couldn’t rip off a person like that if I tried!!!
Wish I had someone like you near where I live in NY. No one over here wants to fix anything, just charge 15-25k to install a brand new unit.

She still really needs a new system being its R22 , its in very poor condition, and the costs of repair are really more then the system is worth. It needs the water heater pulled and install a new system correctly.That house is a electrical mess and I'd be a little worried if I was the last to work there in case something caught fire, even having nothing to do with anything I'd have done.

I agree Duncan. The correct thing would have been to give the homeowners. Options in regards to repairing the system. With the repairs that we’re found. Fan motor and discount. The second estimate could have been for a full system depending on the age of the system. I like to give customer options. Instead of choosing a option for the homeowners without handing all the facts. Nice videos HVAC Guy. Definitely could be more efficient with your trouble shooting time.
It’s important if we’re going to teach. That we teach the correct stuff.

I suppose someone installed the wrong motor. Did you check that the run and start wires weren't reversed?
Actually I went back and found the herm and C wires were backwards. Corrected that and fan started working.
@@HVACGUY I've done that myself before. Serviced a unit once that had a replacement fan motor that was set up wrong rotation. Ran like that for 4 years.

I had a call just the other day. The customer asked how much would it cost for 3 lbs of refrigerant put into my ac unit. I replied if there is a leak we should look into a repair. She replied a tech had already come out for a clean and check and he said I need 3 lbs of refrigerant. Its 40 degrees outside. I replied its to early in the seson to do a proper clean and check of the system it needs to be 70 or above outdoors to properly check the system without damage to the compressor. She replied no worries the tech who came out never ran the system. I replied it sounds like you need a better technican. She got angry with me and demanded a price for 3 lbs of refrigerant because thats what it needs according to the last tech. I replied if I come to your home pull gas off my truck without looking at your equipment just gas exactly 3 lbs and go of R22 your at $300 however you will need to sign the invoice stating this is exactly what you want and I cant be held responsible for anything that happens to your ac system without proper diagnostic. She got mad again and hung up on me. 😆 gotta love it I wish I had the crystal ball the last tech had in my tool bag.
Leave it to a know it all type...they all get what they deserve every time. They just don't get it...doctors get educated and trained, dentists too so the same with the trades. Some folks will believe anything and bet the farm with it.
I have that first unit...mines a Rheem with scroll and I had it installed in 1995 and its still going strong today! The only thing thats been replaced is the condenser fan motor and capacitor 2 years ago. These old Rheems were tanks!
Great video but please get some wire strippers watching you take 20 minutes to strip a 24 v wire was torture lol
From one pro to another, buy some good wire strippers! Nicking a solid wire with a knife is just asking for trouble later on and will drive you crazy when it finally breaks. Not the cheapo ones either. One good pair will last you a lifetime. A Klein Tools one from Grainger is solid choice.
Na u don't need wire strippers. A good pair of linesman's will do the trick.
One thing ive noticed watching these videos. The really inconvenient, tight spaces air handlers are installed in! I feel like any HVAC guy is going to be spoiled working on ours because it has plenty of space around it to work. Im not even sure how they got this air handler in there! Looks like youd have to take out the hot water tank first! Good grief!
It's a good job. But if a technician don't see 24 volts don't say " change the unit" to a customer !
Always amazes me when an appliance that uses explosive gas and spews flames is tucked away inside a closet or crawlspace.
Yep seen it a million times just keep doing what you're doing and be honest and you'll be good and stay out of legal trouble also
My husband was HVAC mechanic. He worked for a company plus had his own business. So many times we would get calls from people saying they need a new unit which they didn’t. Sometimes all they needed a .35 part...this was in the eighties. Or husband would go on calls for elderly people and when I asked where the money was he’d say, it only needed a small part....lol. I called him the charity worker. Anyway, there were sooo many times he got calls for replacement of units...he’d go check it out and there was a spider on the ignition. Now I don’t know if the new units today have them but spiders are a real problem in our area.
Yup, I used to work for an refrigeration contractor. We would get paid every Friday and there would be four or five cars idling in the parking lot. One day, I asked my boss who were the people in the cars. He said that it was the wives, waiting for their husbands’ paychecks.
Sure love watching an honest man do his work well! I pray God blesses you for your commitment to serving your customers honorably.
I know that there are dishonest HVAC/R companies and techs/Salesman out there.
& I'm not defending them.
But before we rush to judgement, let's keep in mind that often the case is that what someone tells their client, & what their client hears them say, can be 2 different things.
For example, a Tech might present their client with both repair options AND replacement options; & recommend the replacement options after showing that its the best solution in the long run, for their client.
But what their client hears is, "You need a new one!"
Then that client calls another HVAC/R company & claims that the previous guy was just trying to sell them a new unit when it can be repaired.
Folks, this exact scenario happens all the time. Clients sometimes hear what they want to hear, rather than what was presented to them.
Were I work, we get commission of of system & equipment sales.
But we have to put together ALL options as individual estimates....which includes replace options. (Unless, of course the said system or equipment still has an active warranty period....then we cannot explore that option unless our client asks us to first)
& I have had clients claim that I tried to sell them a new system or equipment....when all i did was my job.
Its my job to find the source of of issues & provide solutions....that's it. What my client chooses is their choice.
So, yes, I will present options of replacement when something can be fixed....& yes i may actually recommend replacement of repairs.
But I stand proudly behind my recommendation & show why I believe its the best option.
Folks, there's nothing dishonest about that!
What i don't want to happen, is to see my client throw $1000 at something out of warranty because I never presented the option of replacement...
...& their high electric bill doesn't decrease to their understanding or their liking...& then they realize the cost of repairs are no longer economically feasable to justify trying to get their electric bill back down.
Because in that situation, the best solution is to replace.
If i don't offer replacement as an option during that initial call, i have been dishonest, & I have taken my client's money!!!
There's nothing wrongful about present replacement as an option.

What did you do about the fan running backwards? Change the capacitor?
You can use the wire cutter part of your needle nose to strip out small gauge wires. Just pinch down, but not too tight where it'll cut the copper, then pull the needle nose away. It'll strip the insulation easily without damaging the copper. You can do this to both solid and stranded copper wire.

You can in a pinch but it's not recommended. Heck, you could do it with a pocket knife for that matter - but again, it isn't the right way.
If you nick the copper you run a good chance of creating a weak point where a copper will break.
That requires a lot of dexterity though!
I've seen guys strip those little wires with their fingernail..
Copeland ZR compressors are R-22 normally. But it could have a replacement lower cost refrigerant.
With Rudd's , Goodman's ,Lennox , carrier I always put an in line fuse last thing I want is to replace a transformer for free. ( Trane usually has an inline fuse to transformer)
May the copper thief's burn in hell for what they did to that old lady. These copper thief's are not living their life properly and thinking about their future. Harming an old lady is not OK.
Dam, all that work, and you gave her quote. Do you even charge for all that work you did, diagnosing the unit and repairing the 24 volt brown wire, i hoped you charged over 300

I bought a new system then i called another company out to clean it in the Springtime they told me i needed another new system . I laughed and told them to get off my property and cleaned it myself .

Before One Hour Heating And Air went out of business, they were trying to sell people new equipment. The people called us and our service techs would fix it. 9 times out of 10.
You know the type of refrigerant the system uses is on the data plate on the condenser right, it said it was an r-22 unit just fyi

I was screwed by Sears and Roebuck, they came out looked at my HVAC said that I needed a new AC Charged me 5000.00 for a new system. Two weeks later it was doing the same as the old one. Comme to find out it was just a bad thermostat. Makes me very leary of AC repair companies.

Might not happen down there as they don’t run as much in heat mode but I’ve noticed those Criterion II’s rust out bad on the back of the heat exchanger in that rear manifold/collector box the tubes go into. Nearly every single one in horizontal configuration I come across is rusted out.
I’m watching you in northwest Washington. Most of us don’t have air conditioning including me. I have a portable I hook up for the 1-3 weeks a year it gets above 90. But the climate change is happening, I’ve seen it just since I’ve been living here the past 25 years so I’m watching for when it’s time to add air conditioning to my central heat. Learning a lot!
To state the obvious....why were all of the t-stat wires disconnected?
As a former Cable Splicer it kills me to see you trying to strip the Low Volt with those tools. Get a pair of Klein Electricians snips and live happily ever after!
you can take a lighter and burn the insulation off pretty fast
I found using a lighter to heat smaller wire and pull it off with my fingernail works really well.
Try using a good pair linesman barely squeeze on to the wire and pull away. Works for me every time.
