It is probably because firstly they managed to do their own research, not falling into the regular trap of believing most recomendations that you should use Ubuntu if you are new to Linux and that the systems for gaming on Linux have matured immensley by all accounts over the last year. There is still a ways to go but it surely looks better now than in any point in the past.
TBF, Ubuntu doesn't run up-to-date kernels (feature-wise) unless it's features get back-ported for some critical security or mass regression issue. one minor example would be how WireGuard will be in-kernel as of 5.6. Having a built-in secure tunnel will be a big deal for network gaming, but it won't likely get back-ported to the LTS, in this case because there's a LKM (loadable kernel module) in wide-use that's just fine in the mean-time.

I think these videos without Linus are working, he is the face of the channel, but I think a push towards these kind of videos with more of the staff is great. Keep up the good work.
Having the staff host the channel as well feels kind of nice actually. Nothing against Linus, but it's nice overall. ^^ Upvoted so this can be brought more attention to.
It's weird. Because before Luke left there were a lot more videos without Linus. And when Luke left it was 100% Linus and now it's started to change back to others again.
@Cal Mac OS is actually based off of BSD which is Linux! So technically a lot of the stuff that you can do on Linux you can do on Mac, especially once you install a package manager.
Great format! Loved the noob/enthusiast interaction! I think I can say that this was the best LTT video I've seen for the past weeks! Great Job Anthony! :D
>Next thing you know, LTT is now a Linux channel like Level1Techs or even InfinitelyGalatic That would be ironic for a channel of Windows gamers who don't know how to handle a server right. :P
shame this video is kinda miss leading and could have been set out way better for new users to Linux, I have personally used Linux for well over 10 years now
Watching this video for the first time after the Steam Deck got announced, and it runs Linux instead of Windows. Somehow this video slipped under my radar even though I've been subscribed for ages.
Manjaro is awesome, really started to like this as an easy to use and more stable Arch Linux variant, and it feels extremely polished too. People should not be afraid of Linux, especially if they're moderately technically versed under Windows, because it's actually not too dissimilar in Linux - especially with similar desktop environments (loving KDE nowadays. Really came a long way since the rewrite a few years back!). The terminal is a great and mighty tool, but you don't really have to know it. There's a plethora of graphical tools nowadays that work just as easy like under Windows, or even easier in a lot of cases (packet managers are awesome!). And if you have to use it, there are usually plenty of guides out there that lead you through each and every step, no biggy. If there are common steps you can or want to take with the terminal, then you simply learn it over time, until it becomes second nature. Game compatibility has been steadily increased, and I think a lot of people would be very surprised how many of their games would run under Linux. Most of them even out of the box, or just with minor tweaking. The only downside here are new Windows exclusive titles, because if they aren't immediately running through something like Wine or Proton, then you might have to wait a bit for people to figure out how to run them, and then the first running experiences might not be as polished at first either. Still… The more people swap over, the bigger this market grows, the bigger the support gets, the easier and streamlined the experience will be - and all that without the Windows bullshit on a free and open operating system. Oh, and better RGB and VR compatibility is also just a matter of time.
*Whoop! Whoop!* That's the sound of the COPYRIGHT police... looking for a payoff. But, it's fair... Anthony looks, and sounds too much like Lawrence Fishburn. smh
@@abdulwahabjag no it's not. You have no idea how many errors I've run into and how much I've had to troubleshoot. It looks easy in the video but for some reason, things just don't work for me.

I feel like that can be chalked up to having the single camera and relying on the script, if they let themselves be more extemporaneous it would have felt much more natural
@Conor More likely than not, James is clueless. Aside from that, this was meant with the Linux NOOB in mind. He was the stand in, meant to be asking questions to further the progression of the video.
I think this is probably one of Anthony's first times in a starring role for an LTT video. Honestly he seems about as nervous as any of the other now-regulars were during their first few videos. Excited to see him get more comfortable if he decides to do more videos like this, always nice to have the deep down hardcore geeks represented once in a while!
I love how this is sort of a "Linux for dummies" type of video. Good job Anthony especially for explaining it for someone who may not fully understand Linux
Anthony, you rock, dude. You're a natural at this type of video. Explaining things with poise and ease. James is cool, too! Looking forward for more of these videos.
He already is.. he only has few videos but all are really bulletproof.. it helps that he knows how to program because he first declares the concept and tben initializes it.. no variable is used before it is initialized.. realy programatic way of thinking, but also realy straightforward one... 💾
Yep. I just wish they'd speak to one another a bit much instead of looking so much at the camera, especially when they're specifically addressing each other. Besides that, yeah, bring in more contributors, that's a welcome change. :)
Alternatively I can just use windows and it'll take no effort vs Linux's immense effort and the fact that 98% of games don't work in Linux, especially older games
Please... Please make a secondary channel called Linux Tech Tips or something and show Linux to the world! Great video Guys... I love that the mainstream is catching up with open source lately!
Yes more Linux videos :-) I love watching the videos in general. So easy to understand and I learn a lot and with a good sense of humour. Easy to understand Linux videos are sorely needed. Especially when you live in an area where if you ask about Linux they think you are from another planet. And most things I seem to come across on the net are for are a few grades above my head.
@@gwadamit8116 Linux will never get good games without consumers Linux has so many advantages over windows the only thing stopping it from being a Windows replacement is games.
@@gwadamit8116 The difference is that the source for Linux is public. That means everyone can check the source code for vulnerabilities. There are even automatic programs to check for them by purposefully passing invalid data to system functions (Syzkaller and Trinity are programs that do that). Linux's development model makes it inherently more secure than Windows, so I don't think Linux becoming more popular is going to increase the security risk that much.
@@gwadamit8116 I can see your point, but if you mean hack it like in attacking (virus/root kits/trojans/etc.) that is already happening because many services we use on a daily basis are using Linux (some distribution), like UA-cam for a sample. The main difference between a system like Windows and Linux is that early versions of Windows did not have any security at all (there were no file permissions in FAT) while in a Linux based system you had file permissions, so applications could not put files where ever they wanted. It's easier to protect a system that was designed with security in mind from the start then it is to try to secure a system without.

I had considered going back to Linux for a while but was not looking forward to the learning curve, and the fact that this video is from 2019 makes it sound even better. Thanks nerds!
From my personal experience, the drop in performance due in Linux if you have to use Wine + DXVK is about 10-15% (if supported well, then at most), sometimes performance comes close to just 5% slower than on native windows. It's really awesome. Big cheer to doitsujin!
@@rks1789 Wine does not introduce performance hit by itself, from what I know. It is not emulation, it's command layer, so it's basically just translating Windows commands into Linux commands. I've seen tests showing that some (not all by any means) games actually run faster through Wine. So it's not so simple as with, say, a VM, with пзг passtrhough where performance hit is predictable.
@@crunchyplasma1876 yeah you can, but i already got a ton of software that i have activated that most of it have one time use keys and i would hate to see that investment go to waste, since i need it to finish my bachelors and after that i guess i'll see also i know i could use dual boot options but my friend told me its a real hassle and windows updates just wipes linux boot section from time to time
VMs are useful to learn the basics but ain't worth crap if your goal is to ultimately game on it. For many people it's the blocker and a VM is not gonna reassure them with that. Dual booting is already more viable.

@@basshead. Linux is everywhere all around you, either learn it, adopt it, and love it, or get left behind as Windows get worse, and worse, and Apple gets more draconian
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

There is still a ways to go but it surely looks better now than in any point in the past.
Linux still sucks.

"Ubuntu is due for an update, like, now." Ubuntu literally released the newest update the same day.
Proof that Ubuntu developers are watching LTT
Ubuntu releases scheduled updates in April and October.
Coincidence? I think not.
TBF, Ubuntu doesn't run up-to-date kernels (feature-wise) unless it's features get back-ported for some critical security or mass regression issue. one minor example would be how WireGuard will be in-kernel as of 5.6. Having a built-in secure tunnel will be a big deal for network gaming, but it won't likely get back-ported to the LTS, in this case because there's a LKM (loadable kernel module) in wide-use that's just fine in the mean-time.
of course, the point of "updates" is that there is no release, like windows 10 it is more a software as a service, you have no privacy. Avoid Ubuntu.

@@gwadamit8116 Linux will never get good games without consumers Linux has so many advantages over windows the only thing stopping it from being a Windows replacement is games.
Yeah

Second that. FPS and stuttering
From my personal experience, the drop in performance due in Linux if you have to use Wine + DXVK is about 10-15% (if supported well, then at most), sometimes performance comes close to just 5% slower than on native windows. It's really awesome. Big cheer to doitsujin!
So if Wine (obviously) introduces a performance hit, I'm curious if native games have any, drop, or speedup over Windows.
@@rks1789 I've had both version of Pathfinder. I find the difference in fps between windows and Linux is close to 1%.
@@rks1789 Wine does not introduce performance hit by itself, from what I know. It is not emulation, it's command layer, so it's basically just translating Windows commands into Linux commands.
