    I can't believe these aren't in wider use. My family has had one for 30 years now. Yes, it's had and has its issues, but overall it works great. We have a similar setup but use a foot valve with a tuned spring instead of whatever that little thing is he has. If it works it works, that's great.
    I actually rigged up a small wheel that catches the water coming out of the foot valve, it spins it and powers a small led flashlight that allows me to look out and see if the ram is running. No light, ram is off.
    Good for days when it's cold but on the edge of needing to shut it down.
    Also, our setup pumps to tanks well above our house, and we have great gravity pressure. When the tanks are full, the overflow travels down a small tube to a nice water feature we built in the backyard.

    Having built multiple ram pumps myself I can tell you neither the pool loodle nor the intertube is necessary or even beneficial to this system. Increase the diameter of your inlet pipe in order to increase the pressure in the pressure vessel.

    Just add an air valve to the top of the chamber and add more air. No need for fillers.

    • @ElevatedEyes2023
      @ElevatedEyes2023 3 місяці тому

      You still need a buffer between the air and water. Over time the water will absorb the air. Water that cannot circulate through the system will develop bacteria growth. This is the same reason why water hammer arrestor these days use a rubber separator between the water and the air chamber. The old style of DIY water hammer arrestor would eventually absorb all the air and stop the water hammer arrestor function and just become stagnant water that doesn't do anything useful.

    So I had a break in my line. I run 3/4 of a mile up a 700’ incline into 2 1600 gallon cisterns. I had to find a break in the buried section (no map or tracer wire) that goes through a bit of rough terrain. I figured out that the volume I could drain from the break in the pipe to my bib would tell me where to look for the break. Basically, I had to translate feet to gallons.. As long as I could figure out where the pipe laid, I could cross reference and fix my break. I also found out I was pretty good at dowsing. What a myriad of lessons...I know my pipes. Well, most of them. Life’s a bitch then ya die.

    • @cricklicklers9382
      @cricklicklers9382 8 місяців тому +1

      Oh yeah, I run some gates and some ball valves. Depends which section you’re referring to. The key is to have a one way check valve so all of my water doesn’t run back into the well (aquifer) my exposed pipe doesn’t freeze because that section drains back. The buried pipe has the one way check valve right before it goes underground and retains water with a few bibs installed in strategic places to isolate needed repairs. Buried pipe has very little maintenance. But I don’t have to strain my pump to shove all the water all the way from the get go - it slams it at the check valve. I have semi easy access to the check valve - about a 20 minute climb. I’ve put 2. I’m running roughly about 230 psi.

    • @SecretaryBootyyJuice
      @SecretaryBootyyJuice 8 місяців тому

      @@I_Ken_Do_Thata check valve is not a “gate” valve. And there is most definitely what’s called a ball check valve. It is not a traditional ball valve that can be operated either opened or closed using a stem, but a check valve that uses a ball and gravity or pressure to seat and stop back flow. There’s many different types of check valves… swing check, clapper check, lift check, wafer check, spring check, butterfly check, stop check, or a piston/plug check… but none of them are in any way a “gate” valve.

    • @SecretaryBootyyJuice
      @SecretaryBootyyJuice 8 місяців тому +1

      @@I_Ken_Do_Thatalso I know you a speaking about the gate valve being used as a shut off valve, but you grouped check valves/gate valves together. A check valve is a back flow preventing valve, like a diode. And gate/ball valves are a service/shut down valve, like a switch.

    • @johnwyman6126
      @johnwyman6126 8 місяців тому +3

      @johnwyman6126 8 місяців тому +3

      @@Rizik1986 I'm not talking about the pressure, I'm talking about the the pulse, or the shock wave that travels back up the pipe every time the impetus valve closes. It works off of repeated water hammer. Have you ever been in a house where every time you shut off the water quickly you could hear a loud bang when the whole pipe rattled? That's it, it's the same thing.
      There's a UA-cam channel called Land to House that explains a lot of this and shows you how to build one yourself, or, if you want, you could buy one from Seth. He shows experiments with many different sizes, I think all the way down to 3/8 of an inch.

Older systems has a tiny hole drilled at the inlet that sicked a bubble of air every cycle. New ppl put a schrader air valve on top to allow adding air when lost.

      You just don’t understand the concept some people have been using them all their lives to pump water up hills on their farms. Study the concept it works. Your not pumping 100% of the water being used to create the pressure up the hill. Even electric pumps will only pump water so high, The smaller the pipe the higher the water will go due to the weight of the water. That is why you pump it above the house to a storage tank to create a higher pressure for an extended period of time as needed.
      If a water wheel can turn a 500 Lb stone to ground corn into flour how high do you think it would pump water if you used it to work a 3”diameter by X36” long pressure pump
