I didn’t actually know this! Why were these towns taken specifically. The loss of three towns feels like a very light punishment considering the actions Hungary took in the Conflict. Does anyone know why the peace was so lenient, and what significance these three cities held in Hungary?
@@Gander047you could easily just Google this yourself, but in short: Czechoslovakia was given the territory to create the so-called Bratislava Bridgehead as a defensive measure against Hungary. The only significance of the towns were their location. As for why Hungary wasn’t punished, part of it is because of lessons learned by the western allies following the Treaty of Versailles, and part is because Hungary fought Germany alongside the Allies near the end of the war. Similar benevolence was given to other former axis allies in a similar situation during the Paris Peace Treaties of 1947.
Romania didn't claim Banat. This is what Ion Antonescu said when Germany offered Banat to Romania: "I’d rather cut my own veins than occupy an inch of Serbia."
Antonescu's letter to Iuliu Maniu’s stressed that Romania had claim to Serbian Banat due to the Alba Iulia Declaration of December 1 1918 in which all the Romanians of the Habsburg Monarchy declared their union with the Romanian kingdom and the treaty of August 1916.
Finland's true goal was essentially this: 1. Restore pre winter war borders (Official state policy) 2. Annex East Karelia to unify with the Karelian people (Might as well since we're already at war) Anything beyond this was just the fantasy of nationalists.
@franklinclinton4539 I mean it would look kinda ugly if germans won and just gave Murmansk to rk moskowien while it being disconnected by rest of Finland.
Finland's nationalists weren't very interested in Murmansk, but for geopolitical reasons it would make most sense, and it is also ancestral Finnic homeland where Russian living is quite new.
Slaaveilla ei ole mitään oikeutta sille maalle. Suomalaisten sukulaiskansat ovat Venäjällä, Suomesta olisi pitänyt tulla todellinen Venäjä, eikä Rurikin Kiovasta.
Finns were the only "good guys" on the Axis side. Change my mind. They were the only axis nation that wasn't fascist, but a Western democratic state like USA, UK and France. They were also the only one that didn't join Hitler's "crusade against the judeo-bolshevism" out of pure nationalism, fascism or Nazi sympathies, but because they were brutally invaded by the Soviet Union during the Winter War just a year earlier, which resulted in the loss of 11% of Finnish territory, along which 10% of the Finnish population had to flee their homes. (It's important to know that this land that the Soviets annexed from Finland wasn't some "contested" territory that had both pro-Soviet and pro-Finnish people living on it and that nationalists from both Finland and Russia had claimed and fought over in the past, but a 100% undisputed part of Finland whose every citizen felt themselves as 100% a Finnish citizen. When the Soviets took this land, literally EVERY SINGLE ONE of the 400 000 people living in there fled to Western Finland, and the Soviets received the land completely EMPTY.). The Finns obviously wanted to get back this land that the Soviets had annexed from them, but also the Soviets kept constantly threatening them with a second invasion and a full annexation even after the Winter War had officially ended. On top of that, Finland was also facing a severe shortage of food after the Soviets occupied 30% of their most productive farmland, and that could have resulted in a catastrophic famine in the country. So they desperately needed someone as an ally to sell them weapons and cheap grain. And because allying with the Western Allies wasn't possible anymore after the German occupation of Denmark and Norway, the only remaining option was the Nazi Germany, who then obviously demanded Finland to help them in Operation Barbarossa as a price to pay for their aid and protection (and of course a lot of Finns also wanted to counterattack the Soviets anyway to get the occupied land back, so they were not that hesitant to fulfill this German demand). But it's important to understand that Finland was not IDEOLOGICALLY an ally or supporter of the Axis, only militarily. There was very little support to fascism in Finland, and they didn't fight FOR Nazism or the Axis, they only fought WITH them and used the Axis military aid to help their own country in a very difficult situation. They were ideologically pretty much on their own side, even though they militarily joided the Axis because they were stuck between rock and a hard place, being threatened by the Soviet Union and a famine and having a very important piece of their land just recently taken away from them. Also while it's true that the Finns committed some shameful acts and war crimes (like almost evert country in history that has participated in wars), they were nowhear near to be even compearable to the systematic mass-murder of millions or hundreds of thousands of innocent people that the other Axis powers (the Nazis obviously, but also other smaller Axis countries like Romania, Hungary and Italy) committed. The Finnish war crimes were almost as "mild" in number and brutality as the crimes committed by the Western Allies (Britain, USA, etc). Finland was the only Axis country that protected its Jews from Hitler, and treated them as completely equal citizens like the Allies did, and many Finnish Jewish heroes actually fought alongside the regular Finns for the country's independence agains the Soviet invaders. When Himmler visited Finland and offered German help to "solve Finland's Jewish peoblem", Finnish prime minister Jukka Ragnell famously responded to him: "Finland has no Jewish problem".
That's the biggest problem with Balkan nations and their rampant nationalism, it's legit impossible to draw up borders that satisfy _all of them._ That region is such a damn headache.

7:11 the region is actually called Bessarabia, not Moldova. Yes, this does mean that the current Rep. Moldova has 0 territory in the historic region of Moldova lol
German goals were near the Urals mountains or about 100km east of them, to later including a large part of Siberia and the Middle East/ stan nations, but at the very least all of Western/ European Russian / USSR.
Australia also wasn't part of the Japanese plans either.

What if the new world colonized the old world instead of the other way around?
not sure how this would realistically play out but maybe you could do something with one of the american empires or perhaps have the natives invade the old world in retaliation for previous colonization attempts?
yay another PH video is out!

Day six of asking for videos I'd like to see. My computer monitor just broke as a door fell on it. So I had to navigate my broken computer just to tell you this.
-What if the confederacy won the civil war.
-What if Italy was militarily competent in ww2
-what if Italy sided with the allies in ww2
-what if the dinosaurs never went extinct (this isn't really history but still cool)
-what if the cold war went nuclear
-what if Italy sided with the central powers
-what if Charles Babbage had successfully completed his analytical engine
Fun fact: hitle actually offered croatia to Horthy, but he declined
I dont even know the territorial goals of my nation in ww2, thanks for informing me!
*10:00* ''Bulgaria, being Bulgaria, *wanted even more.* What they ultimately ended up with, was less''
Can't blame them lol.
“Those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside”
Can you make a video on what if the French Revolution never happened?
How do you make your Maps?
If you take suggestions for videos here’s mine.
What if the uk threatened a nuclear response against Argentina in the falklands war
I think it would make an interesting video no matter how realistic it is
Thank you for every second you give in your vidoes to less minor European nations. As a Bulgarian your attention to details is much appreciated!
Yeah, I love that he recognized firstly that Bulgaria was practically forced into the Axis by Germany and secondly that the territories it wanted, including Macedonia, were populated by Bulgarians and historically Bulgarian and not just some expansionist whim.
@pakoti96 Indeed!
Surprised no mention of Finnish hopes in Scandinavia was mentioned
Can someone help me figure out the piano song's name during the Finland part?
Perfect Italy video when?
please make a video about Hitler stopping the conquest after annexing Czechoslovakia
Maybe you could do an alternate history video for if Thomas Sankara had never been killed
Can you do what if everything went perfect for Ghana
what if timur reunited the mongol empire
Dude I usually find the debate pretty nonsensical and do not really care, but calling north Macedonia just "Macedonia" and the actual Greek Macedonia area "South Macedonia" is criminal
Vojvodina isn't pronounced "Vozhvodina" but rather "Voyvodina". Otherwise your videos are great!
3:38 Carpatho-Ukraine mentioned RAHH
No way, i was certain i recognized the picture of the Danube at 10:45. It isnt in Bulgaria funnily enough, its near "Bach an der Donau", close to the city of Regensburg in southern germany.
Edit: most likely photographed from the A3 highway bridge over the danube, looking aprox. north-northeast.
See how croatia didnt want anything? we were just chill guys who only wanted our historical land we had since the 7th century (bosnia and dalmatia which we retook from italy❤)
Finland’s Northern border by the northern coast was the post Winter War border instead of the post ww1 border
