  • In this video, I talked about what I like most about Taiwan as a Mainland Chinese. Although we have surpassed Taiwan in a lot of areas, there are still many places where Taiwan is doing a better job.
You can let me know whether you agree or disagree with me in the comment section below.
I hope one day, Mainland China could catch up in those areas as well.

    SerpentZA sent me ..
As a foreigner living in Taiwan for the last 20 years - I could not agree with you more .. I have made Taiwan my home because it is not only a great place to live - but it is actually better in my opinion to any of the many other places in the world I could choose to live and work .. I can live and work anywhere in Europe or Australia or New Zealand and I have chosen Taiwan. The Taiwanese are not just amazingly friendly - they are by far and away the most progressive country in Asia .. and arguably anywhere.. they managed to go from essentially a police state to a fully functional and robust democracy and elect a female president within the space of 25 years - something the US has still not achieved. 75% of people vote in general elections .. And Taiwan is the most progressive country in the region on many many things .. The first to legalize gay marriage, to outlaw the consumption of animals like dogs and cats, have essentially free national health care and all social services .. Even as a resident foreigner (but not a citizen) living in Taiwan I have all of these services.
The taxation is extremely reasonable. Actually I'd say too reasonable - they need to start to understand the transference of personal income tax to corporations. If you raise personal income tax and also raise the minimum wage - then corporations have to start paying people better for their time in order to maintain the same disposable income. Then the government gets more money to fund the social programs but the corporations are indirectly paying it - and there are a lot of large corporations in Taiwan who could be contributing more to the coffers. The individuals are no worse off - but the government has more money to pay the doctors and teachers and infrastructure costs etc..
If you look at pure GDP - yes China has dwarfed Taiwan - But there is an argument that a lot of that is based on massive infrastructure projects that may or may not be actually useful - but just to keep maintaining the economic growth - we'll see if that pans out in the longer term ..
However - I love Taiwan - this country has been good to me - and I have no desire to go anywhere else.
    Keep up the good work.

I can get a higher salary in China than I can in Taiwan. This applies to all South Africans including black South Africans, which is why South Africans prefer to come to China over Taiwan. This allows them to send money back to South Africa. I'm assuming you are South African based on your story.

@@Storm4155 No - I call myself mostly Australian .. My family are from NZ and I'm born in UK - but that is largely irrelevant - it is true I'm white Euro - which does change things .. But I think you're actually probably really wrong .. Most people I meet here from South Africa get paid commensurately (there is a certain bias on skin tone even here ) - but the difference between a "white" South African and any other "white" person is nothing .. The thing you're mistaking is marketing .. If you apply for a job from South Africa (whether it is to China, Taiwan, Australia, or anywhere - they're going to give you the ass-rate..)
When I applied to (an international company from where I was living in Canada) they offered me and my girlfriend a job in Taipei for (I think $450 an hour - in Taipei - the most expensive place in Taiwan by far) .. Fortunately I had friends in Taiwan and I said this is what they offered - he said WTF? - tell them to shove it come directly here and apply for a job when you get here .. Which we did ..
(This was 20 years ago - to be sure)
My first job off the "boat" got me $650 and hour going up $50 an hour every 6 months or so until I was on $800 an hour .. I stayed in this job for 15 years .. because with the cost of living in Tainan (about 1/3 of Taipei) .. But still a sizable city of nearly 1,000,000 .. The four story house I was living in (I like nice things) cost me about 5-6 days of my monthly wages ..
I'd like to tell you how SO completely wrong you are - but you'd likely not even believe me - so I'll not waste my time .. Enjoy China.
Here's a view through the window of our 9th floor fun space - we have the whole floor and basically use it for playing games .. it's about 100 ping if you know what that means .. and it costs me about 1 weeks salary .. this is not my apartment - this is our "fun house" -
      facebook.com/wanderinglinton/posts/10161216641810624
If you can tell me that you can have this place and an apartment and still only work 4 hours a day / 5 days a week and still have money to burn .. okay..

I am a Chinese, raised to hate Japan. The very moment I learnt English and knew how to circumvent the internet only then I realized that the war is long over.
Many around still believe our CCP propaganda that Japan is always at the brink of invading China.
but i think there is no point to dwell in the atrocities that a handful few committed almost a hundred years ago. besides back then Japan society was pretty much like the society in China today; they cannot question what ever propaganda they are being fed. i for one cannot and will not hate an entire race for the actions of a few dead people.
mentally China is a 100 years behind the global society and CCP has taken the entire Chinese populace hostage with their hateful self preserving agenda by creating non existent enemies to dwarf, overlook and hide their own shortcomings.
meanwhile, love and regards to Japan. the more i am told to hate u the more i realized how admirable u are when i studied my supposed enemy.
our greatest enemy is our own ignorance and pride. nobody else.

True honest review. However, comparing Taiwan with China who is just 40 years into it's reformation is unfair. China has been through hell, the fruits if it's endeavor and hard work is just coming to light in recent years. China didn't have the time, peace and economy to evolve it's society like Taiwan. With better education and more exposure China is improving every year, but it will take a generation or two before there can be a fair comparison. China's recent achievements and progress however, is commentable and should be appreciated.

I don't think it's true that standard of living or wages in mainland Chinese cities are the same as Taiwan. Taiwan's GDP per capita is still 2.5 times larger than China. Chinese cities are very modern, but the people still earn less than Taiwanese people.

Yes, it is. The more interesting thing is that Taiwan's GDP per capita is three times higher than mainland China, whereas, the per income of Taiwan is five times higher than mainland China. Chinese people have to pay more taxes and enjoy less welfare such as medical care and retire pension. And the government say we are a communist country, but they share very less responsibility for their people.

Agree 💯 While Mainland China tried it's utmost to cut itself off from its roots, Taiwan saved and preserved many cultural artifacts and aspects. Chinese people were historically known for their very high quality craftsmanship, but modern PRC seems only to produce cheap, poor quality goods, whereas Taiwan is leagues better while still maintaining reasonable prices. The Taiwanese also seem to value the tradition of Daoism more highly. In any case, they seem to be the Ines continuing the story of Chinese civilisation in a befitting way.

Thanks for a great video. I'm an ABC from California originally and have lived in Taipei for many years. For the last several years, I have been traveling to mainland China a lot and have been to many cities mostly in the South to the East Coast.
In almost all regards, I would say that life is quite a bit more difficult in mainland China and the people are not as interesting for me to talk to. People in general aren't as friendly as you pointed out and since I am not white, I don't get any extra points for being a foreigner. Although I have made some really great mainland friends over the years, the percentage is far less than my Taiwan friends. According to the numbers, I can say I prefer my Taiwan friends more.
As someone who goes back and forth between Taiwan and mainland China, my biggest pet peeves are the quality of the people in mainland China, the food quality, unclean environment, and smoking indoors like restrooms, hotel rooms, and basically any public place like airports even.
In Shanghai, taking the subway can wear me down quite a bit because it seems like I can never get a seat and the city is so big that it takes quite a long time to get anywhere.
And taking trains in mainland China between cities is survival of the fittest. Hard to get a ticket. As a foreigner, getting a ticket can take a long time in the line and people like to cut in line which makes it worse. Tickets are often sold out if you travel at the wrong time. You have to fight your way on to the train with a short span of time to get on the train. Taking High Speed Railway in Taiwan is far less stressful but there just isn't much business to do in Taiwan so I don't take it much.
Obviously, in terms of manufacturing and having a larger market, mainland China is much better, but in terms of quality of living, air, and food, Taiwan is a lot better.
Even going to Shanghai for one day makes me notice now much worse it is for my lungs which are quite sensitive to smoke. I'm just not cut out for that environment.
Cost of living and going out to eat in Shanghai is definitely more expensive than in Taipei, but yet I feel the food quality in general is worse.
Shanghai and much of mainland China is simply put, overpopulated and the people have way too many bad habits making the overall environment less appealing. Shanghai itself already has a larger population than all of Taiwan province. That's ridiculously overpopulated even for a large city.
Politically speaking, a one party system also makes the environment feel very unfree and people are strongly impacted by having less access to the Internet. I feel like people don't know what I am talking about half the time or pretend not to because they are not supposed to be discussing those things or something.
The fact that I can't settle down with a TV show or movie on Netflix at the end of the day is also a huge downer. The VPN doesn't work over Wifi networks. It only works through my mobile but I cannot do everything on that.
Being cut off from things like LINE everyday in mainland China also really gets to me because not many Taiwanese people want to use We Chat to keep in touch. I have to tell them I am going over there so they will contact me on an app that actually works.
Also, my simplified Chinese isn't that good and Google Maps doesn't work that well over there. I am forced to use Baidu Maps and have much more trouble with it due to my poor understanding of simplified Chinese which I wasn't trained in at school.
Anyway, when the business was going well in China, I loved it, but even that seems to have dried up a bit so I don't enjoy it over there as much.
Looking to spend most of my time in Taipei for the coming years.

Very well said!!!! (Just a minor reminder: China's per capita GDP is still WAY lower than that of Taiwan.) I am Canadian but I was born in Hong Kong. Even though Hong Kong is not as bad as China in the many areas you point out in this video and even though Hong Kong is considerably wealthier than Taiwan, it still lags behind Taiwan in all those areas. Like you, I have been to Taiwan many many many times, and the more I go there, the more I am in love with the country. (I prefer being in Taiwan than in Hong Kong, and I cannot stand being in China which I have visited.) I have traveled extensively all over the world over the years (I grew up in England and have lived in the United States for many years too), and Taiwan is my number 1 most favorite country in the world.
