Excellent video as always. Watching this reminded me that I never played Aftermath or any of the MK11 DLC, and I totally forgot that they got Cary Togawa to play Shang Tsung again. What a legend.
Hell. F*cking. YES! I'll stand by it that the untold legends series is one of the best and one of my favorite YT series by a creator. Big ups for keeping this one going!
LIU KANG!! 🙏🏼🔥🐉☯️ The greatest kombatant and Immortal Champion of Mortal Kombat! Can't wait to see whats in store for him in this new journey as a God. Pain, stress, heartbreaks, but hopefully happiness in the end.
1:14:15 I love how it goes from Shang-Tsung confidentially talking shit already proclaiming victory, to instantly on the ground defeated and disintegrating 🤣 Amazing edit 👌🏼🤣
I remember when people actually tried to justify Raiden’s misguided actions in MK 9. If you actually looked at it from Liu’s perspective? Raiden went fuckin Bat Shit Crazy. No one is seeing Raiden’s visions but him and all the characters were forced to follow a man who was probably just seeing wild shit and getting them killed. Literally put yourself in any other character’s shoes that wasnt crazy and let everything sink in. Raiden on literal faith just HAPPEN to be correct. Nothing was guaranteed and the Elder Gods werent any help in guidance at all.
Excellent perspective, you can't really fault Liu Kang for how he felt after everything went down. And I think Raiden recognized that since he basically stepped down and eventually handed the torch to Liu Kang.
I actually blame the fact that Raiden *nor* Liu Kang caught on earlier that the Elder Gods literally said the merging of the realms is what was breaking the rules of Mortal Kombat.
Cetrion said in an intro Liu Kang was related to Onaga in some capacity. He's either Onaga's descendant, or a descendant of someone from his species. I wish they explore that.
They never said they were related, just that he has the same fire. Probably a plot point they set up to elaborate on in the future. For now it doesn't really mean much.
I think Liu being like a branch family to the Lao family or even adopted into one makes sense and do think there is something there. I don't think he is directly related but I think you can trace his line back to him
@@GamerThumbTV plus it would explain both Laos feelings toward him. They are basically family but Kang worked way harder to earn his place while Lao had the name so didn't have to. Kung Jin hints his family is strict and traditional so maybe that is because of Liu Kang kinda taking some of that fame from the main family
Man, Aftermath felt so fucking mean spirited. They learned nothing from Sindel in MK9. After a great main story, the DLC undid everything and killed everyone all in the name of ANOTHER reset lmao this is why I love the characters of MK and not the stories.
21:21 Onaga didn't get the amulet until after Raiden blew everyone up. The way you say it sounds like he already had the amulet when he was charging through the three attacks.
speaking of MK vs DC (great way of sneaking it in btw) I wonder if Raiden actually had seen that game in his visions, did Dark Kahn inspire him to fuse with Liu Kang. and since i had never seen that games arcade endings I now also wonder how shazam! Lui kang compares to current Lui Kang.
Interesting theory, and Raiden definitely saw that game in his visions. That place with floating rocks where Liu Kang and Raiden are fighting in one of the memories is from that game. MK11 made MK vs DC canon in some other timeline.
Question since you’re doing a Silent hill story at some point Will you Start with origins I know this has nothing to do with this franchise On this video but I’m curious
7:46 I wanna believe this was a rejected idea for the first Mortal Kombat movie before he goes back home to his grandfather. 😂 Grandfather: American life has addled his mind. Too much television.
This may be a Hot Take... BUT.... I'd argue that even though LK is the Hero of Earthrealm and champion of MK, the actual protagonist is Raiden as the Protector of Earthrealm... He was assigned to earthrealm, fought Shinnok ages ago, he probably prepared/trained fighters for the MK tournaments till the G-KLao won (importantly, as a God he cannot compete/participate unless directly challenged) and continued to do so till LKang won, continued to rally forces for MK2 and beyond, till he fell from grace at MKDeception but always the direct opposition to Evil... If Raiden was king, LKang was Queen as his most powerful and trusted warrior that makes him the hero of the story, just not the true Protagonist... Until now, excited for what's to come 👊🏻... It is Time 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Dude, I love your series on character development of MK. It’s stellar. However, I’m going to have to provide a slight correction on your take on the name Liu Kang. 2:46 Gordon Liu. *Liu* 刘/劉 is a *last name,* not a first name as you claimed. Tobias and Boon didn’t make a mistake and had colleagues to confirm that Chinese last names (family names) go first in the culture. Otherwise, we should be calling him *Kang Liu.* Kang 康 can be a Chinese last name, but Liu is *definitely NOT* a first name in Chinese culture. Boon and Tobias didn’t make a mistake. Again, please understand. I humbly let you know, and give this slight correction with my knowledge and connections with Mandarin Chinese. Keep up the great work in your videos! I look forward to more MK characters!
The development team didn't really adhere closely to cultural norms, including names. There's no sourced information that they confirmed the creation of the name with colleagues. The MK story and characters have always been a mishmash of various myths, movies, mixed with stuff they just made up, etc. Within the video game universe, it's first name Liu, last name Kang. How things work in real life doesn't really apply here. They basically did whatever sounded good to American audiences. Typically Kang is also more commonly a Korean name in our real world, but here we have a Chinese hero. I appreciate the well thought out comment!
The Kamidogu gave him the ability to return from the dead. Reptile was just the vessel. Without Shujinko Onaga wouldn't have been able to return at all
Remind me of how did Raiden teach Liu Kang of how to steal soul? I’ve never seen Raiden stealing a soul before that is Shang Tsung’s thing. Raiden uses the power of thunder, while Shang Tsung steal soul. I know Shark Kahn teaches Shang Tsung how to steal souls but Raiden? How the f*ck did NeatherRealm Studios f*ck this up?
It's the only way his legs would've broken suddenly. What affects your past self, affects the present day self. Same reason young Johnny got a scar from a bullet and it appears on present day Johnny's face. How he knew it was Shao Kahn, who knows?
I'd like to know Liu Kang's biological brother at some point. Oh ! Wait. That's impossible now because of the reset and making a sister for Raiden. Instead of child Hanzo, I'd be more interested in seeing Liu Kang's brother be trained. They made my man Scorpion dirty. Kuai Liang just doesn't work.
Currently, I like Liu Kang's storyline. From being a Mary Sue to being screwed over so badly. So I think in MK One, his role swap with Raiden will be good. Which hopefully would mean that Raiden and Kung Lao will benefit in character development. And hopefully give them the characterizations they needed to be much more likable and deserving of the spotlight.

Agreed. Liu Kang is one of the realest when it comes to fighting game protagonists.
@@TT-md7mm There's a reason he's the chosen one!
💯 agreed
He's always been the face what do you mean? Tell me you've never played an mk game before 2011 without telling me so..
This was a fantastic retrospective on the Liu Kang story. From humble Shaolin Monk to Fire God and protector of the realms.
Thank you for checking it out
The part I like is that he doesn't have to double back to show all the non-canon endings. Liu Kang IS the Canon, so just goes mostly straight through.
Yep he had very few non canon stories.
I'm here for "9-5, regular joe" Liu Kang. Just working in downtown Chicago, going to Bears and White Sox games
Then getting attacked by ninjas randomly throughout his lunch breaks.

He's definitely been around
